Wonderful + Horrible Ending = Bad Taste

Left on 04/22/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Great apartment. Great location. Lovely welcome.
Too bad the "goodbye" was so ungracious.

After repeated emails to the owners regarding our unorthodox arrival and departure times, and after enduring the 2013 marathon bombing, we were quietly gathering our belongings to leave at 3:30am when arthur came out of a darkened hallway and startled the heck out of me. So much I automatically screamed my head off and then was less than pleased to have this send off from our already dramatic visit.

Instead of an apology, Arthur (who I had never met), became agressive stating, "I don't appreciate that. I am the owner of the house. I had no idea you were leaving at this time." and went on about some sort of surgery he had (all of which I fail to see as relevant to his mistake in any way).

Honestly, you don't approach a cop's daughter (or any guest, I would think) from behind in a dark hallway in the middle of the night, and not expect a confrontation.

The rudeness was an unbelievable disappointment after the five nights we had spent in his home, and the warm welcome we received from Cindy.

Ug. It still makes me angry. It is difficult to recommend a place that makes your blood boil with it's memory.

We would just like to clarify that we had corresponded with this guest about their late arrival time and were there to greet them when they arrived at 12:45 am on Saturday. They never communicated their departure time to us.

Emotions and anxiety were obviously running high after the Marathon and when Arthur saw the door ajar at 3:30 am, he was concerned and went to close it immediately. He was startled when the guest appeared from outside and started yelling at him. We hate for any guest to leave on a bad note but hope she can understand why Arthur was so concerned about safety following the Marathon bombings.

Great apartment, great location, great host

Left on 04/01/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We arrived on a late flight and Cindy (the host) was waiting with a friendly smile (and a helping hand for the baggage). The apartment was a perfect Boston base for our family (2 young kids, 4, 7). Stayed 3 nights and could easily have stayed longer.

Apartment was very clean and kitchen had essential fresh items provided for tea/cofee/breakfast. Decor was lovely, couldn't be faulted.

Great location, easy 15 minute walk gets you across the water into the central area. Some great places to eat within 5 mins. Monument was 2 minutes walk up the road!

So much better than a hotel.

Charming home away from home in Boston

Left on 11/17/2012 for a stay in November 2012

My husband and I stayed for 5 nights and really enjoyed our stay at the Charlestown apartment. This is one of the most comfortable places we have stayed at during our travels. The owner Cindy is very nice and accommodating and we appreciated being able to leave our luggage on our last day as we had a late 5:30 pm flight. The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen and some basic pantry items for preparing meals. The historic Warren Tavern is just a block away where we enjoyed a few meals with nightly entertainment, and there is a small shopping center just several blocks away with a market (due to close soon), drug store, pizza, and Dunkin' Donuts. While the apt may not be as convenient as staying in the downtown area where the action is, the tradeoff is that it's in a very nice, quiet residential area that makes you feel like you're living like a native of Boston. One caveat, however, if you're flying in during bad weather conditions, reserve a taxi in advance. We arrived during a Noreaster and it was quite the challenge to get to the apartment. The local buses were unreliable and late and we were unsuccessful in flagging down a taxi. When the weather warmed up, we did take the local bus (1 blk from apt) to downtown and also took the T subway (10-15 min walk from the apt) to Harvard Square, Museum of Fine arts, and the Prudential Center. Our advice to first-time visitors: take with the Freedom Trail first, which actually starts one block from the apartment at the Bunker Hill Monument and ends in downtown Boston Common - it is one of the best ways to see some of the major historic sites in Boston and become familiar with the surrounding "must see" neighborhoods. It will make navigating the city much easier during the rest of your stay. Best eats: Giaccomo's and Mike's Pastry in the North End, Sam La Grassa's - best sandwiches!

      Comfortable, Clean, and affordable

Left on 11/05/2012 for a stay in October 2012

This was such a perfect place to stay! It was clean, close to everything (including a little bakery with fresh coffee and scones in the morning), lots of restaurants and bars to see, a grocery store for essentials, and the train station for easy access to all over Boston. Arthur and Cindy were great people and were able to work with our crazy plane schedules; they even let us leave our bags so we could enjoy the city until our 7 PM flight the last day! If I could give one piece of advice, make sure you do not do the stairs up the Bunker Hill monument (which is one block away!) the first day, especially if you are not in the best of shape. 297 stairs, my body hated me the rest of the trip!

Left on 10/22/2012 for a stay in October 2012

We had a fabulous stay in the Charlestown apartment. The owners are wonderful - responsive, friendly and helpful but unobtrusive. The location was great - a historic neighborhood very near the Bunker Hill Monument, a short walk from the "T," grocery store and restaurants. We walk a lot - and that's what we did during our stay. The apartment was a great starting point for the Freedom Trail. Everything we needed was in the apartment, with many extra appointments and touches. The place was spotless, spacious and secure. It has a comfortable bed and furniture, and well-equipped kitchen. We felt great coming "home" to this place after our miles of walking. One hint: we use a noise-maker and earplugs when we travel. It helped with some street noise you might otherwise hear. We would definitely recommend this place and would love to return.

Perfect Home From Home in Charlestown

Left on 09/22/2012 for a stay in September 2012

My husband and I stayed in Cindy and arthur's apartment from September 10th -17th 2012. The entire experience exceeded our expectations.

We arrived early evening and were met by Cindy, who immediately made us feel welcome and at home. Cindy showed us around the apartment, explained how everything worked and spent quite some time chatting about the previous stops on our tour. Our initial impression of the apartment was that the photographs do not do it justice! Everywhere was spotlessly clean and Cindy had provided absolutley everything the weary traveller could need. It really was a case of simply shopping for food.

The apartment is quite spacious and beautifully decorated. Although the TV is small, there are plenty of channels to keep you amused while recovering from all the walking! And who comes to Charlestown / Boston to watch TV anyway?! The kitchen is comprehensive. The shower is excellent. The bed is huge and comfortable. Although the apartment is on the corner of a quite busy road, traffic noise is not really an issue. The outside space is perfect for catching a few rays in the afternoon.

The apartment is 5 minutes walk from a Foodmaster Supermarket and several eating places and the Warren Tavern is only 2 minutes away. The nearest T station is about 10 minutes walk and, if you want some retail therapy, Cambridgeside Galleria is 20 minutes walk in the same direction as the T station. For a different view of the Boston skyline, you can take a ferry from the Navy Yard (about 10 minutes walk) to Long Wharf for $3 each. The Bunker Hill Monument and Museum are at the top of the street and you can join the Freedom Trail and follow the red line around the other sites of interest.

We would not hesitate to recommend this apartment. Cindy is a great hostess and could teach many other renters a thing or two! We will certainly be staying at this apartment if we are lucky enough to be in the area in the future.

I searched for awhile to find a good location for our stay in Boston. The listing for this one kept coming back to the front and I decided to try it. What a perfect decision. This apartment was ideal for our week long stay. The location is great, close to the T, restaurants and shops, parking, etc etc. Cindy and arthur were so friendly and welcoming. It was a great home away from home to come back to after long days of touristing. When we go back to Boston I will definitely check the availability of Monument ave. We whole heartedly recommend staying here!

This place had everything we needed and invited us to relax when

Left on 08/09/2012 for a stay in August 2012

My husband, daughter, and I recently used this apartment. The landlord was there to greet us when we arrived and carried in our luggage for us. He took us on a tour of the apartment, invited us to use the back sitting area, and even picked a rose for our toddler. The apartment was mostly a landing pad at night, since each day was spent exploring the area, but when we were home it had everything we needed and was very relaxing. There were plenty of towels, a fan, an iron and ironing board, plenty of dishes and appliances in the kitchen, and even a drawer full of toys that kept our two-year-old happy throughout the week. We felt the living room was too open to put our daughter's pack 'n play in there, so we put it in the kitchen around a corner. It made the kitchen a little tighter, but there was still room for us to sit at the table and use the amenities we needed. The accommodations were relaxing, the neighborhood was incredibly charming, and we were literally a block away from Bunker Hill. It seemed like we were only 10 or 20 minutes away from anywhere we wanted to go, so if we did decide to come home then go out again it wasn't a big deal. We loved the proximity to the Freedom Trail and the North End and the easy access to public transportation, including a bus stop a couple blocks away, an easy walk to the ferry, or a downhill stroll to the subway. We did just fine without a car for our trip, even coming from the airport. For a family getaway or a couples retreat, I think this is a charming location to rent. The couch in the living room folds out into a bed, so I think if we even had a couple of older kids who didn't need a crib we still could have made it work. They also had helpful restaurant menus, maps, and other materials available for us to browse and get ideas for our stay.

We had a wonderful time in Charlestown and Boston. The location of the apartment couldn't be better; just far outside the city to be in a leafy avenue, but close enough to be able to easily get to the centre. The flat is absolutely lovely, We loved the way it was furnished and there was a lot of room ( we are a family of 4), we had our evening meals in the kitchen , the nearby supermarket was handy for the shopping. We walked to the subway, but there is also a bus at the corner of the street which goes downtown. the area is pleasant. Arthur is a real nice person, his wife seems to be in a hurry all the time ( even at check-in: we had been travelling for 20 hours in addition English is a foreign language for us and she didn't seem to take any notice of it when she showed us the flat and what there was to know about the accomodation)
To sum it up we enjoyed our stay a lot and we recommend this accomodation.

My husband and I stayed at this apartment for a week and it was a great place. The owners are very nice and live on the other floors above the apartment. They gave us a map with the locations of nearby stores and transportation, which was very helpful. I thought the walk to the T station was a little bit far at first, but once I had done it a couple of times, it wasn't so bad. There are also bus stops that only take 1 minute to walk to, but they don't come by as often. I thought it was a great area, though, quieter than the main area of Boston and very cute. I loved the sandwich shop that was right across the street. The Bunker Hill monument is right down the road and the USS Constitution is also very close.

Arthur was very kind upon check in and showed us where to park, etc. I was however, taken back by Cindy. When we arrived from our 14 hr drive there, the apt was not clean, despite having called the cell phone to inform of our arrival time. Cindy informed us that "First of all, you are parked illegally, and Bostonians are rude," She put the responsibility on us that the apt was not clean and sort of blamed us for arriving at the time we called and said we would be there. Arthur sort of had to do service recovery after the interaction with his wife. The apt had an asian decor even though it is situated 50 ft from the battle of bunker hill. Sort of a downer towards patriotism. Although, I did enjoy the apt's structure, cleanliness, and kitchen.

Left on 06/15/2011 for a stay in June 2011

This is a great apartment in Charlestown, just a ten minute walk across the bridge from the North End of Boston. The accommodations are quite spacious and comfortable, the owner, who lives upstairs, very friendly, and the neighborhood very convenient, with restaurants, shops and necessities nearby. The only downside is that parking is pretty much non-existant, and in bad weather, the long walk to the train could be problematic. We would definitely consider staying here again when we return to Boston.

Impeccably furnished classic Boston apartment with great host!

Left on 01/08/2011 for a stay in December 2010

My two friends and I stayed in this apartment for two nights while we were visiting Boston from New York. Our flight was cancelled and then we couldn't get on to the next two, so we arrived several hours later than planned--around 9pm at night. Cindy, the host, who lives in the apartment above, was more than flexible and greeted us warmly despite the inconvenience caused by our late arrival. She gave us tips and advice on where to eat and how to get around, then left us to our own devices. The apartment was spotless, very artfully furnished, and even had thoughtful little extras like makeup remover towlettes for guests to use! We could not have asked for better accommodation. The only drawback was the slightly longish walk to the 'T' station in the bitter cold, at about 10-15 minutes. But in pleasant weather, it would be fine. I left my phone charger behind by accident, and Cindy even offered to drive to the train station and meet me with it! I didn't want to put her to that much trouble, so I asked her to post it instead, which she did, promptly and without even asking for reimbursement. Thanks again, Cindy!

We were a couple and our 16 years old daughter from Spain seeing Boston for 5 days last august. This appartment was really nice, comfortable and useful, close enough to downtown. It really was what we needed. The owners were very kind and nice also. A great choice.

      Great location, lovely apartment

This apartment was in the local Charleston district of Boston just 2 minutes from the Bunker Hill memorial. The owners live on site and are very nice and not in any way intrusive. We were staying with our two grown up children and we cooked in for a couple of nights and there's a good supermarket locally and lots of utensils and equipment in the kitchen so it really felt like a home away from home. Overall we would really recommend this apartment.

Beautiful Charlestown -- A great place to stay in Boston

Left on 08/25/2010 for a stay in August 2010

We had a wonderful 4 day/3 night stay at this wonderful air-conditioned apartment in Charlestown at the foot of Bunker Hill. All amenities (shopping, banks, restaurants, bus and "T") are in easy walking distance and the owner provided a simple map of the neighborhood to help us find them. Just a short walk from the Charlestown Naval Yard where we caught the ferry to the aquarium -- what a great panorama view of the Boston skyline.
The apartment itself is very nicely furnished and decorated with a fully functioning kitchen and clean and modern bath. All in all this pleasant apartment made our august stay in (very, very hot!) Boston a real pleasure.

comfy, convenient, well-equipped with loads of character - great

Left on 06/10/2010 for a stay in May 2010

Comfy, convenient, well-equipped with loads of character - well furnished and lovely fabrics and fittings, great location, in the heart of the North End community, easy walk to freedom trail, and most of Boston's attractions. We especially enjoyed eating al fresco on the roof terrace with good views to the city.10 mins walk to T.
Quite expensive for a small flat, but we loved it and would definitely return..
