About Bowen Island
Bowen Island is known for being a place of quiet contemplation and creativity. Often artists and writers come to the island to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
However, this was originally a summer destination for the Squamish Nation, who hunted deer and fished for salmon here. You can still see evidence of their influence in the towns, and each year there is an Aboriginal festival to celebrate their contribution.
Many of the locals commute from Bowen Island to Vancouver on a daily basis – it's that close! So daily life is heavily influenced by the big city.
While you're there, you should definitely try the freshly caught salmon. It's delicious! But if fish isn't your thing, try Poutine – the staple Canadian dish of chips, cheese curds and gravy. Yum!
What to do
You may come to Bowen Island for a quiet relaxing experience, but there's plenty to do if you start to get restless.
For sporty types, try the mountain biking and hiking trails, or kayak on the calm waters. It's great for beginners and you might even spot sea lions, porpoises, whales, otters and eagles while you're there. Keep an eye out!
There's plenty to do in the winter too! Try snowshoeing and tobogganing, then see what else is going on by visiting the Visitor Center.
Visit one of the local art galleries or museums to get a real taste for British Columbia.
If you want to get away for an evening, visit Granville Island. Take a quick water taxi from Snug Cove to one of Vancouver's biggest hotspots! Enjoy fine dining, excellent entertainment and more while you're there, then return to your secluded paradise.
Top Bowen Island tips
This part of Canada is known for its marine life, so if you take a boat out or go kayaking make sure you have your camera. Also, try not to disturb or feed the animals – taking pictures is fine, though!
If you decide to take the trip over to Vancouver, go up the Harbour Centre Lookout. You'll have a great view of the city, especially if you go up at sunset.
