Description from the owner

Set in a superb position above the Dronne valley, Les Vignasses has 4 bedrooms (sleeps 8) and 2 bathrooms. It is ideal for both families and couples who want to enjoy the peace and quiet of the lovely Périgord Vert countryside and all the local holiday activities. The river Dronne is three miles away at Bourdeilles (with its wonderful château) and 5 miles away at Brantôme (the "Venice of the Périgord").

We have a bit more than an acre of land, with a network of local footpaths leading through the woods and starting from the house (no need to get in the car). The area is fantastic for cycling (we supply bikes) as long as you don't m...Read more

      Haven of peace

Left on 05/02/2013 for a stay in April 2013

We spent one week in this beautiful farmhouse. We are a French couple from Brittany, with a well behave dog. Used to rent house/appartment around the worlf, we appreciate very much this one: very well equiped (for cooking, resting, sunbathing, playing, cycling, canoeing...) in a very cosy manner (we feeled at home) and due to the fresh evening temperature, we used and loved the stove. The surroundings are very pleasant: a lot of walks from the house our dog appreciate very much and a lot of visits in the surroundings: towns (Perigueux, Bergerac, Angoulème...), villages, daymarkets, castles, museums...). Easy shopping at Brantôme (Carrefour market - english newspapers available); don't miss the daymarket along the Dronne river. So a very plesant rental in a beautiful county well known for its gastronomy and history and a very helful owner. An address we won't forget and we will probably return to.

Best Value Chill Out Holiday Ever!

Left on 01/10/2012 for a stay in August 2011

As a family of four I thought the barn was incredible value and the place sleeps eight! We fancied a total chill out break this year and St Julien is ideal. We had one major excursion to Sarlat, Domme and Chateaux Castlenaud. But the rest of the week was spent swimming, walking, bike riding and canoeing. Brantome is incredibly pretty as is Bourdellies. I started my day off nearly every morning with a bike ride down to the Boulangerie in bourdellies to pick up breakfast. it's up hill on the way back but a cracking way to get your day started. My favourite part of the day though was sitting on the terrace in the evening with a nice glass of red looking out over the forrest as the sun went down. Perfect!

A really lovely chance to get away from it all...

Left on 03/26/2011 for a stay in August 2010

This was our third visit to St Julien, but the first time we had been without another family. Our previous visits had really made the most of the fact that the property sleeps eight - bringing two families here had been lovely so we thought we'd have a go with just the three of us. It is such a peaceful place, and with just the right mix of 'mod cons' and rusticity for us: there's everything you need for a comfortable stay whilst retaining the feeling that you are indeed staying in a small rural village. The main thing we always notice is the space, both inside the house and especially the grounds. Isaac, and the other children who visited, found hours worth of exploring in the orchard at the back and we enjoyed taking the country walks which are accessible right from the back door. The village of St Julien is very quiet and is only a mile or three from Bourdeilles with its bakery and other shops (and small castle). Brantome is also nearby with lots of bars, restaurants and shops. Bigger places like Sarlat have also made for excellent day visits and are only a comfortable and scenic drive away. We tended to do a big hypermarche shop on our way to the house (usually in angouleme) then top up with visits to the many local markets. You can never eat too much cheese. We enjoyed bike rides, canoe trips and summertime river swimming as well as lots of lazy picnics and long lunches. We tended to eat at the house in the evening - for some reason we had about four or five variations on a cassoulet and french bread theme! The house and its terrace are beautiful for whiling away an evening with red wine and stars (so bright here) or for simply sunbathing and reading in the afternoon. We've so far been with two other families, but we really enjoyed the peace and quiet this last time. We are about to go again this Easter, which is why I came across this 'review' form, and are excited already at the prospect. Can't wait - hope you love it too.

Rural tranquillity near beautiful and historic town of Brantome.

Left on 03/14/2011 for a stay in August 2010

We've rented several houses in the Brantome area but this is our favourite. The barn is simple, comfortable, and unpretentious and Chris the owner undertakes home improvement every year (we know because we've been back every year since 2005), so the place gets better and better. The property has all essential amenities and the rental represents excellent value for money. The setting, in the hills above Brantome and Bordeilles, is lovely and the views from the very spacious field that comes with the house are glorious. Brantome (the "Venice of the Perigord") is beautiful with excellent restaurants (especially the Chabrol if you want to try authentic local cuisine), Tuesday and Friday markets with bountiful local produce, excellent boulangeries, patisseries, and bars. This is definitely one of the quieter parts of the Dordogne and much the better for it. You can rent a canoe or kayak and explore along the river Dronne, and the gently rolling terrain is perfect for cycling or walking. I'd say that the place suits the family who love the outdoors, and who are keen to explore the delights of rural France.

      Rural French holiday

Left on 03/10/2011 for a stay in July 2008

Very impressed overall. The property is idyllically set on the edge of a sleepy hamlet in pleasant rolling countryside. Sited well off the public highway in its own extensive grounds, the barn conversion provides a safe & private venue for family holidays. The spacious accommodation has been tastefully converted - & to a high standard. The location is very handy for Brantome, with plenty of good walking, canoeing, swimming and historical sightseeing on tap. Highly recommended.

Complete Peace in a Lovely Country Setting

Left on 03/10/2011 for a stay in May 2010

We first stayed here in 1998. We took four small children and escaped from our very busy lives to complete peace and quiet in a simple setting. Bikes and Canoes were in the barn for us to use and there were lots of forest walks, flora and fauna in abundance.
We have been back virtually every year since. As the kids grew up we have gone further afield, swimming, trekking cycling and canoeing. Grandma at 84 shot her first weir last year. The best place to just switch off.

Great relaxing time in the depths of the Dordogne Countryside

Left on 03/10/2011 for a stay in December 2009

This is one of our most favorite places on Earth. We discovered it just over 10 years ago and have returned on a regular basis since. It's extremely peaceful and is great for getting back in touch with what life is all about.

If you're non materialistic and enjoy being in the wilderness there's no better place to go. Sit back with a glass of wine in your hand and enjoy a fabulous vista with stunning sunsets.
