Wellington, New ZealandHome from home yet easily in reach of the city
Left on 05/05/2013 for a stay in April 2013
We recently stayed in Ellen's apartment in New York. Before we arrived Ellen was friednly and helpful when securing our rental and providing advice on transport to the apartment on our arrival. As it was we arrived late in the evening after a long day's travel from Belfast to London and on to New York. Ellen's husband was at the door to meet us despite the late hour, and showed us round their wonderful apartment. It was much larger than I had imagined from the photos, with all the appliances and comforts of home. Ellen and her husband had also filled the fridge with fresh milk, orange juice, eggs, and waffles, for our convenience and enjoyment! It was so good to not have to worry about breakfast the next day (and for many mronings of our week there), The beds were very comfortable and we were pleasantly surprised to see that in addition to a double sofabed, there was also an armchair which tuned into a single bed - perfect for our four year old. I really cannot say how happy we were staying in this comfortable apartment and I would recommend it to anyone! It is in a quiet residential area, so easy to sleep well at night, but we also travelled into the city everyday on the subway - the station for which was only round the corner (beside the supermarket). In addition to recommending the apartment - we found the weekly metrocard extremely good value at $29/per person for unlimited travel on subway trains and buses all over new york (and our 4 year old was free!). We found it easy to travel around the city and we found everyone was very friendly and helpful. It took us on average 25 minutes to get into the centre of the city from Tehama st in Brooklyn.

Essen, GermanyKomfortables, geräumiges, ruhig gelegenes apartment
Left on 04/13/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Auckland Region, New ZealandPerfect Brooklyn pad for exploring NYC
Left on 03/29/2013 for a stay in February 2013
This apartment was the perfect for our two-weeks in NYC. It was warm, comfortable and cozy with all the home comforts. Still miss the huge, comfy bed and settling down into the couch and putting your feet up after a long day exploring the neighbourhood. Ellen and albert were brilliant hosts, settling us in, then leaving us completely to our own devices. The subway station is just at the end of the road, and it was so handy having a supermarket right there too. We just bought a $29 weekly Metro card and rode the subways wherever we needed to go. Getting to Manhattan was super easy (about half an hour, but it never felt too long) and Park Slope has lots of great bars and restaurants (and Hamiltons - within walking distance of the apartment - was the perfect local too). I would come back to stay here any time I visit NY and would highly recommend it to anyone I know who's visiting (in fact, I already have!).

Calgary, CanadaAs advertised! Value, comfort, cleanliness, friendliness
Left on 01/20/2013 for a stay in December 2012
We were very pleased with this apartment in Brooklyn. Ellen and albert made sure to meet us upon our somewhat late arrival and, considering our unexpected layover due to weather, it was particularly nice that they had stocked the fridge and pantry with some basics.
The apartment was impeccably clean, and a bit larger than we'd expected. As promised, it allowed a great deal of light in during the day. We found the trip into Manhattan was quite convenient, the train station being nearby. In fact, we were pleased to get to know Brooklyn as part of our visit. The neighbourhood seemed safe. Having a grocery store close by was also nice. We didn't notice any nearby restaurants, but they were several within a couple of minutes on the train.
Probably the apartment cannot handle 4 adults; but it was certainly suitable to my wife, myself and our two teenage girls. The main bedroom is spacious and the bed very comfortable. Ellen was always available for advice when desired. We would recommend this apartment to anyone, and would absolutely return. Thanks again, Albert and Ellen. -

Highlands Ranch, ColoradoVery clean, well-equipped, wonderful hosts!
Left on 04/17/2012 for a stay in March 2012
My husband and I are from Colorado and recently spent nine nights in albert and Ellen's rental apartment. The accommodations exceeded our expectations, and since we come to NYC regularly, we are thrilled to find a much improved and more economical alternative to hotel life. Our hosts, Ellen and albert were trustworthy and helpful from our first email inquiry through our final day, and they obviously take pride in providing a well-equipped, very clean and updated apartment which is more spacious and lovely than it appears in the on-line photos. This apartment is located on a quiet residential street and we were able to go everywhere we desired with just a short walk to the F train. We will look forward to more stays at "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn".

Our stay was very nice! Albert and Ellen are wonderful people! When we arrived we were warmly welcomed and received tips from Brooklyn, NYC and the subway lines. Milk, juice and waffles in the fridge show how caring they are! The location is great and they provide the Wifi (great for planning trips)! Clean, safe and close to the grocery and the subway! We loved and recommend to everyone!

My friend and I stayed here in august and we couldn't have asked for nicer home owners! They were there when we arrived and showed us around the apartment which was very nice and cozy, plus recommendations on where the nightlife was. The house is not is in walking distance of the grocery store and the subway. They even helped us find a hotel when our flights were cancelled due to Hurricane Irene. I highly recommend this place!

We stayed at " A tree grows in Brooklyn" for a week in May 2011 and found the apartment to be extremely comfortable. Ellen met us on arrival and gave us a very informative introduction to Brooklyn, Ellen and albert have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and the milk, fruit, eggs and orange juice were a very pleasant bonus.
The apartment was extremely clean and the Wifi made it easy to make plans etc.
The location is very close to the Church St Railway and only 30 minutes to Manhattan.
Brooklyn has much to offer if you don't want to stay on Manhattan. I would certainly recommend this place. Thank you Ellen and albert. -

It's located within a short walking distance from a subway station, so no problem to get to the main attractions of Manhattan or Brooklyn.

FranceGreat for NYC family vacation
Left on 11/02/2010 for a stay in October 2010
Great for NYC family vacation.
Apartment is exactly as presented on the photos.
It is spacious and quiet, on the 2nd floor. Owners leave on 1st floor.
We found it very clean, and food for breakfast was offered in the fridge. That's a nice attention !
The bed is very comfortable as well as the sofa.
We haven't tested the oversized chair that folds down into a single size sleeper, but I don't see it as being a confortable bed.
Note that there is no door between the 2 rooms.
Washer and dryer are brand new and work great (we used washer only). There is enough space in the apartment to use the provided clotheshorse.
The kitchen is neat and provides more than enough to cook diner if needed and offer dishes and plates for at least 4 persons. There is a microwave and a cooker with a full size oven.
There is no dish washer, but the sink is large enough to do it by hand. Soap and sponge were provided.
The bathroom is new and clean. It is not huge but the shower is large and very comfortable.
All linen was provided (bed, kitchen and bathroom).
Free wifi is available.
The neighborhood (Tehama Street) is calm and safe (even at night). Subway is 5 min walk, and is direct to Manhattan (F line). 45 min for south side of the Central Parc and about 20 min for financial district.
It is about 45 min from JFK in taxi (cost $35).
There is a small supermarket next to subway station, ideal for every day dinner buying (it closes at 9pm or 10pm).
Ellen and albert gave us some useful tips on our arrival, and were very accommodating for our departure.
We found a lot of scams when looking for a renting in NYC; it was quite scary for us to rent without going through and agent but at the end, this one is safe and proposed by honest people.
We stayed a week there (2 adults and 2 kids) going in Manhattan every day, and it was a great week.
So we recommend it.

Left on 10/08/2010 for a stay in October 2010
The owners are great; they made us really welcome and had stocked up the fridge for our stay. The apartment itself was clean and spacious and very reasonably priced. There were four of us staying there and we were more than comfortable. Great place to stay if you don’t mind a small commute into Manhattan. It is well connected and is only a 5 min walk to the subway. I would definitely recommend it.

This is a really lovely apartment which instantly feels like home. The owners do everything they can to make sure your stay is comfortable.. Myself and three of my friends stayed there, and there is plenty of room and it is very cosy. A 2 min walk to the Underground Station and Tehama Street is a nice quiet road. Book to stay at this apartment and you will not be disappointed.

Absolutely perfect!!
We booked the apartment about 10 months prior to travel. During that time, we made a slight change to our itinerary and the owners were very accommodating.
The hosts are the nicest people you could meet -- warm, friendly, helpful.
The apartment is immaculate, and very bright and spacious.
The washer and dryer in the apartment were incredibly convenient.
The shower has excellent water pressure and very nice fixtures (and I really love the tilework!)
The apartment felt very home-y. We were very comfortable lounging around the apartment, and felt like we were in our own home (except their couch is way better) :)
The subway station is a short walk away (less than 10 minutes).
There's a grocery store right by that subway station.
We enjoyed the diverse neighborhood and always felt safe, whether it was 12pm or 12am.
The apartment is above the owners residence, so there is a flight of stairs to climb. (This is purely informational)
This experience has changed how we travel. We will absolutely stay at this apartment again, next time we visit NYC. We'll also look for similar accommodations for other vacations, though al and Ellen have set the bar sky-high. -

We could not of chosen a better place for our NYC family vacation! The warm hospitality of the owners and the spacious, clean and beautiful apartment made it the perfect place to stay. The short stroll to the subway was very convenient for making our way to the many attractions and excursions in NYC and Brooklyn.
After a long day of sight-seeing, it was wonderful to return to our apartment that had all of the conveniences of home, such as, whipping up a delicious homemade breakfast or heating up a pizza slice from the infamous Grimaldi's in the modern/well-stocked kitchen, doing laundry in your own apartment after a day at Brighton Beach on Coney island or just relaxing with the family in the living room area to watch the Brooklyn visitors channel.
We look forward to our return and thank our hosts for all their help in making our family vacation very special! -

Left on 11/18/2009 for a stay in April 2009
My husband I really enjoyed our stay at this apartment. It is spacious, sunny and accommodated all our traveler needs. Having a washing machine and dryer was great as we travel light and needed clean clothes for our next leg. Not having to loose a day of sightseeing to go to a laundry mat with quarters was a great savings in time and convenience.
The bed was comfortable. Good kitchen for breakfast and packing meals and keeping snacks. My husband liked his morning walks to local bagel store. Really misses those bagels. We enjoyed sightseeing Brooklyn and Queens and it was easy to get into the city. This apartment made visiting NY affordable. For the price, this is a bargain. Looking forward to renting it again. Maybe I shouldn’t have told you about it?
