Gracious luxury with modern convenience, overlooking Budapest's most beautiful urban garden.
In the absolute heart of the city, Apartment Max recaptures the ease and civility of 19th Century Budapest. 20' ceilings, detailed plasterwork, 18th-20th Century antiques. Apartment Max immerses you in Mitteleuropean elegance from a more civilized time while providing a full range of 21st Century technology and convenience.
... A short walk to the Astoria and Kalvin ter Metro stations, Max is two minutes' walk from Vaci utca, less than five from the Danube, the National Museum, and the Great Synagogue, less than ten from the Basilica, Andrassy ut, the Central Market.
The loveliest vestpocket garden in Budapest lies directly across the street, one of the city's best-kept secrets like Gramercy Park in New York, Karolyi Kert is a botanical preserve, a playground, a place for sweethearts to sit and talk (and steal the occasional kiss). Your geranium-edged balcony overlooks the garden from just outside your bedroom, with a view of the gothic buildings down the street and the Buda hills in the distance.
A full one bedroom with additional sleeping accommodations in the living room (queen convertible and daybed), Max has vast ceilings and is furnished in antiques appropriate to its regal setting. Filled as well with an unusual array of modern technology -- from washer/dryer to air conditioning; from flat panel display to computer and home office; from free unlimited VOIP telephone service to dvd library -- Max will make you feel pampered, cozy, and privileged. Surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and shops, Max is nonetheless homey and residential, with supermarkets and cleaners within two blocks and of course the city's most beautiful playground garden across the street. There is an ATM at the corner, a wonderful cafe - the Alibi - a block away. The city's best patisserie is a 3 minute walk (the Auguszt) and two of the very best traditional Hungarian restaurants are within 5 minutes' easy stroll (upscale, the Muzeum Kavehaz; low-key and local with the best Hungarian fish stew in the downtown area, the Alfoldi).
NOTE: The apartment is also viewable in a YouTube video (admittedly primitive...we're not professionals): go to YouTube and search for "Apartment Max Budapest".Read more

Home away from home...the perfect antidote to impersonal hotels
Like staying at an absent friend's place. John, the owner, obviously takes pride in providing a great experience for his guests, offering every convenience and comfort at the apartment that one may wish to have, even down to leaving a bottle of good local wine for you. He offers a comprehensive insider guide to the city and area, like advice one might receive from a personal friend. The apartment itself is very comfortable, tastefully furnished with antiques thoughtfully put together. Ideally located on one of the prettiest, 'tucked-away' squares in Budapest, in a convenient part of the city, 5 mins walk from Kalvin Ter metro station, Raday utca restaurants, the National Museum, Vaci utca shopping street. This is guest accommodation as it should be.

Old world ambience with modern amenities
Max is located in a the kind of building they don't build anymore - 19 foot ceilings and seemingly honed from solid stone. We never heard a sound from another apartment. The architect of the makeover who introduced modern conveniences while retaining the early 20th century character is to be applauded. The location is convenient, in an upscale neighborhood within walking distance of the many attractions Budapest has to offer. While the cost is perhaps a bit more than other apartments in Budapest, this is a case where the value is worth the expense. John was always very responsive to communication and accurately represented the experience with a wealth of information. Highly recommended.

We actually stayed in apartment andrei, though we were to originally stay at Max. Andrei is fantastic. The space is phenomenal! Great art, old world charm, every amenity imaginable, 19th Century flair with modern conveniences. The added touches, such as a welcome bottle of wine waiting for us after a long trip, pastries and basics such as milk, eggs, meats and cheeses for breakfast, were quite unexpected but thoroughly enjoyed. Location was great! Central to very fine restaurants. Pouring rain our first night but we found our way a few blocks from the apartment to one of the best restaurants in Budapest, in our view, Persil, not to be missed. The apartment was spacious enough for us to host 12 of my husband colleagues for drinks and dessert after dinner at a restaruant within walking distance. Everyone enjoyed the ambiance.
We loved the sense of experiencing life in the country where my father was born and being in the center of things. Even ended up at an art opening in the neighborhood where we were treated like invited guests.
I would recommend andrei without hesitation. Our greatest pleasure when traveling is to feel as though we truly experienced the essence of place. What more can I say? If you plan on being in Budapest, Andrei is a delighthful place to stay and inbibe.
Perfect home and location
Our first visit to Budapest. The owner, John Farago, was a tremendous help to us and very willing to answer the many questions we had. I can only support many of the reviews already provided: the flat is beautifully proportioned and the decor delightful as well being homely. We ate out all the time but, should you wish to prepare meals in the apartment then everything is provided. We could not have asked for a better location, across from a lovely park with a bar at its far corner, easy walking distance to many restaurants. We were met upon arrival by Ilona, again very helpful in ensuring that we were familiarised with the apartment. We loved apt Max and Budapest. I do hope we return in the future.
Max--Relax (after walking all day!)
Apartment Max is the perfect location for exploring Budapest. It is close to everything--hip shops, great restaurants, downtown Pest, the Central Market, the Jewish Quarter, and several modes of public transportation as well as easy walking distance to all of Pest if you are a walker.
The apartment itself is stocked with every amenity you'd want or need, like a modern bathroom, air conditioning, wifi, a wonderful small balcony overlooking a great city park, comfortable beds and linens, a Nespresso machine and milk frother.
Additionally, the owner has a manager who is available to help you get situated and is available during your stay to answer all questions.
Honestly, we couldn't imagine a better rental situation--I forgot to mention that the owner provides an extensive, eminently readable guide to the restaurants and foodways of Budapest along with dozens of other guidebooks. We were also left with a stocked refrigerator and several breads and pastries that provided our week's breakfasts. A real hospitality treat!
Family of five found home in Budapest
It was our first time to Budapest as a family, but my husband had been many times to visit his relatives. We wanted a central home base near a park because we have three active kids aged 10, 8 and 5. We found home at apartment Max. We could watch the kids cross the street to go and play while relaxing on the balcony. We were steps away from the fantastic Sonka arcok restaurant (the duck breast, wow!), Jo Kenyer had fresh sour cherry buns and kifli (a crescent-shaped bun my husband loves), and there's a great place for ice cream on the next corner of the Károlyi Kert. The kids loved chilling out on the web and watching their favourite cartoons in Hungarian. The shower was fantastic. My husband and I developed a new appreciation for espresso in apt. Max. We can't wait to go back.

Great comfort and great organization
The place is great; very comfortable, spacious and charming. Has perfect organization and the owners go an extra mile organizing the facility and giving complete useful information.
Lovely, spacious apartment
An excellent place to stay in Budapest. John really has all the amenities you could think of in this apartment: great coffee, travel books, dvd's, computer access, etc... The location is excellent as well.
Perfect place to stay while in Budapest for all categories of tr
It was perfect culmination of our trip to Central Europe. Over just 2 weeks we went from Vienna to Bratislava to Prague and finally arrived to Budapest. John has arrange our transportation from train station. Courteous manager, Iolona, has met us their with keys. Free internet, WiFi, printer, free long distance international phone, top of the line espresso coffee machine, pastries and bread, milk and cheese in refrigerator. For travelers with 6 yo kid it was really blessing. Local tour guide met us next day in the morning. Her first words were:"You are in perfect location". We could appreciate it immediately. All major attractions are in walking distance. At the same time apartment is very quiet. Windows are facing a beautiful park. Area is very safe and secured.
We will recommend this apartment to all our friends who plan to visit Budapest.

Paradise and luxery
After staying in apartment Max (and apartments Sara and Belle in 2009) I can honestly say that nothing else compares! John ensures that every detail is attended to. The apartment is pure luxury with beautiful furniture, a fully equipped kitchen, a computer and free phone line and a beautiful balcony view of the park across the street. The leather sectional in the living room doubles as a pull out bed and is pure comfort! Heated towels in the lovely wash room and special treats on our arrival (cheese, pastries, and wine) just added to the charm. The location was perfect...we walked everywhere. John supplied us with detailed recommendations for dining, touring around and cultural highlights. He also arranged for our cab ride to and from the airport. We have rented vacation apartments across Europe, the USa and Canada. Nothing compares to apartment Max and the amazing city of Budapest!

Stunning stay in Budapest
What more can I add to all the other rave reviews but here goes. We stayed as a family of two adults and two teens during October half term 2012 and the apartment was ample size for our needs and beautiful high ceilings. One of my daughters friends from school whom we bumped into at the airport and her Mum (from Hungary but now living in Yorkshire) came to pick us up one day and the Mum remarked how in keeping the apartment was and enjoyed having the chance for a look around in particular explaining the ins and outs of the orginal chimney/stove! Everything you could need is close by and clearly explained in various info in the apartment. The pastries, cheese, meat and wine were ample after our evening flight without the worry of going to a restaurant. We had a relaxing stay and saw the sights (but not enough so we will have to make sure we return!) ate well locally and splashed out on the last night on a riverboat meal with stunning views. So don't bother looking at other apartments just book this one! John and co keep up the good work!

The very best rental
Apt Max is a spacious apartment with a wonderful location. Located across the street from a beautiful park on a cul de sac street it is as quiet as being in the country. One block away is great food and gelato. The metro is an easy walk.
These features are outstanding but the owner, John Farago, does not rest on these laurels. His manager met us and explained all of the apartments many features. Elevator, Washer, Dryer, Dish Washer, Computer, Cell Phone, Nepresso Coffee, TV, and Wi Fi.
A bottle of wine and groceries were a welcome surprise. His driver will meet you at the airport and drop you off. This is important since Budapest is famous for predatory cab drivers.
What a wonderful apartment
What a wonderful apartment - exceeded our expectations! Comfortable, spacious and well-decorated in a very pleasant location with easy access to all public transport and a plethora of restaurants. Worth every penny of its reasonable price. The little open-air wine bar (Csendes Tar) at the corner of Karolyi Kert is a joy for a pre-dinner glass or a night cap, with a limited but good selection of wines and pleasant staff.
In addition to free WiFi and telephone calls, the owner offers a plethora of information about the apartment, the neighbourhood and the city - salted with a great sense of humor.
Tip: if you remember to lower the shutters when you go out for the day, when you return, 15 or 20 minutes of air-conditioning is all you need to bring the temperature down on the hottest day of the year (39°C, 101°F). Later, once the sun was off the windows and the temperature dropped for the evening we could open the shutters and the windows again and enjoy the night air.

Sophisticated, luxurious, and spacious
We planned a two week family (5 adults) vacation to Budapest and were so lucky to find John and his properties. None of his apartments that could accommodate the size of our family were available the entire time, so we spent about 4 days at apartment Max, then moved to apartment Sarah/Belle for the remainder. John's attention to detail and his insight into what visitors may need is wonderful. We took his advice and had him arrange taxi service to the apartment where we were welcomed by Ilona's brother-in-law. (Ilona was away while we were in Budapest). It was wonderful to have this prearranged because we needed assistance at the airport in reporting a missing bag. (delivered to the apartment the next morning)
The wealth of information that John provides via his websites, through email, and in the apartments is all helpful. He has a wonderful sense of humor, which is evident in his various descriptions of life in Budapest, using the currency, shopping, use of the appliances in the apartments, and many other things. His phone calls to make sure everything was going well and his inquiries following our stay as to anything that might improve the experience, all speak to his love of the city and his respect for his guests.
Apartment Max is situated across the street from a beautiful park with a balcony overlooking this gem. Inside there is a well equipped modern kitchen, an updated bathroom with a large shower and double sinks, comfortable beds, a washer & dryer, and upon arrival, there are pastries, snacks, and a bottle of wine waiting for you. Among the other amenities were the use of a computer, a land line one could use to call "back home", TV, spa towels and bag, and lots of books...travel, history, fiction, etc.
You can fit 5 people in apartment Max, but when 3 of them are 20 something young men, the sleeping arrangements can be little tight, but certainly doable. We highly recommend apartment Max. You can't go wrong with any of John's apartments.

The most attractive, comfortable, well equipped, and well looked
My husband and I loved everything about apt Max. It is gorgeous, spacious, fabulously well equipped, and well looked after. It has an elegant, old world style but all the comforts of home (and more!), including a double shower with jets and a fabulous nespresso coffee machine with a range of types of coffee supplied. The location is perfect: quiet and overlooking a small park, but very central and close to excellent cafes and restaurants, the National History Museum, the Jewish quarter, Central Market, and lots of shopping. It was hot outside but beautifully cool inside. It is a perfect place to relax after a day out and feel comfortable and at home.
The owner is extremely helpful and prompt in all his communication. Shortly after we left, we even received an email asking if there was anything that needed improvement or replacement. He succeeds in making the experience of staying in this apartment as enjoyable and hassle-free as possible. He provides detailed information about how to use all the equipment in the apartment as well as extremely detailed and useful information about Budapest, what to see, where to go, how to get around, where to eat and shop, etc. As well, there are many books in the apartment on all the aspects of Budapest a visitor might want: general tourist information and specialised information on architecture, walks, cooking, history, and literature.
Budapest deserves several days to take in the atmosphere. We wish we had stayed two weeks instead of just one.
We have stayed in quite a few apartments in Europe and the us but apt Max is by a very long way the most attractive, comfortable, well equipped, and well looked after. We recommend it most highly and hope to stay there again ourselves.

Everything was perfect...location, apartment amenities, and the
I have rented apts through Vrbo approx 10 to 15 times before, and this was the best experience I've ever had. The apartment is very charming and fully furnished/provisioned with everything one could possibly need. The owner has written an insightful 'guide' on how/what/where to maximize one's experience in Budapest. The restaurant/cafe recommendations were spot on. I ate at both Cafe alibi and Cafe Central, and at Cafe Bouchon twice! The first time I had their goulash and the second time the fois gras (it was sublime)...the waitstaff were very friendly and willing to describe every dish on the menu. And lastly, but not in order of importance, was the wine, cheese, coffee, milk and pastries that were 'standing by' for the weary traveler in need of sustenance, but without the energy to go looking for it!

There are only a few times in life when one's
grandest expectations are met let alone greatly
exceeded. Apartment Max, John, his associates and Budapest made
for one of those times. The apartment and location
are not only as advertised but even grander than
the photos reflect.
The wealth of attention to detail, knowledge, practical info and help that John provides on his website, by phone, by email and in the
dossiers and guides in the apartment provide immeasurable added value.
Things we loved:
Being picked up at the airport and dropped off in the apartment by alajos (arranged by John).
The elevator, though the apartment is only one flight up. The 18' ceilings. The apartment was warm when we got there.
The fresh pastries and bottle of wine on the counter and stocked refrigerator upon arrival.
The location: central, convenient, safe, quiet yet beautiful and alive with birds singing, children playing and parents kibbitzing in the park. Shop at the Central Market in the morning. Plan your day at a cafe around the corner. Break your day for a rest back at the apartment then head out again. Have a bottle of wine on the balcony, watch the children play, and make dinner and entertainment plans.
The bathroom and shower. The towels; hand-loomed in Turkey.
The dvd library (Goodbye to Lenin). The guide books library. The one page, 8 1/2"x11" plastic-laminated maps of Budapest that fold and fit so neatly in the pocket and are so durable. John's personnel dossiers on inside the apartment, outside the apartment and restaurants, cafes and pastry shops, etc., etc.. The nicely edited library of books. Don't miss Strictly from Hungary by Ladislaw Farago. It is a Runyonesque collection of sketches of the rogues and roués who peopled the culture and cafes of Budapest between the wars.
The very fast wifi. The phones for making reservations. The two calls from John to confirm that everything was more than fine.
A great place to stay in style
We were made to feel very welcome during our brief stay... being collected at the airport by alajos, pastries wine and groceries waiting for us on arrival, and a long list of recoomendations of things to do in Budapest from Jon. The apartment itself is very grand with high ceilings and impressive furnishings.
Fantastic experience...best place we've ever stayed!
With apartment Max, we finally hit the jackpot! We do not have a single complaint about the apartment or the service . Our praises are limitless. From the start, the owner was the most amazing virtual host. John is organized, quick to respond and is acutely aware of the needs of his guests. He emailed a plethora of information, which included a manual that addressed every imaginable question about the apartment, must see/do recommendations, restaurant suggestions. After reading the information, all my questions had been answered and my planning seemed less daunting. Honestly, John had me at hello. After my first interaction with him, I was certain that Budapest was going to be a memorable experience. Apartment Max truly felt like a home-away-from-home! It is expertly decorated, immaculate and not a single comfort has been forgotten. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by warmth...literally. Most apartments are freezing and we have to wait hours for the heating system to kick in. Not apt Max! There was more than enough room for a family of four, great mattresses, mosaic tile shower and rain shower head, nespresso machine, printer/desktop, cell phone, landline on which you can make worldwide calls, games, movies, CDs, books, and washer and dryer. Upon your arrival, a bottle of wine and delicious fresh local pastries are waiting. The refrigerator was stocked with essentials such as milk, eggs, cheese and salami! John also provided a spa bag for a trip to the baths as well as luxurious Turkish towels stocked in the apartment's water closet. The apartment is in a beautiful, convenient neighborhood. It is walking distance to shops, restaurants and grocery store and sits across from a lovely park It is also a quick walk to public transportation, so no need for a car. Choose any of John's apartments and you will not disappointed!

Warm and cozy setting and great location
The owner, John was extremely available to explain everything about the apartment before I left the us for Budapest. He went over all the important things, and even took the time to answer some minor questions I had such a peace before I even got there. Once at the apartment, I was so impressed by its location. It is in a great neighborhood, right near one of the nicest parks. The apartment had all the amenities, including some food in the fridge and coffee too. It was so great not to have to run out the first morning and hunt for food. The apartment itself was well furnished and very warm and cozy. I would highly recommend the apartment and the owner. John really cared that I had a good time on my vacation in the gorgeous city of Budapest.

The perfect apartment and Location
I have stayed in several of the better hotels in Budapest and have rented numerous apartments too. This apartment is by far the best. It is like staying at a 5 star property. Not only is the apartment beautiful, it lacks nothing. It has everything described and all in perfect working order. The WiFi is fast! A very warm and spacious apartment. If you were going to buy an apartment in Budapest - you would have a hard time finding one this nice. Simply excellent. Excellent staff and everything well planned and thought out. I will stay here again (it will be difficult to stay anywhere else!). The location is perfect too. Everything is in walking distance.

Apartment Max is Excellent
My husband and I had the most delightful week in Budapest in September 2011. This is an amazing city to explore. Firstly I would like to talk about the apartment. What a pleasure it was to stay in this apartment. It was centrally located, situated across from a park, spotlessly clean and had every amenity one could possibly need. The kitchen was fully equipped including a coffee machine. There were guide books, TV and DVD player with a choice of movies. Internet Wi-Fi was available as well as a VoIP phone. On arrival you were greeted with pastries and a bottle of wine and a refrigerator full of basic needs. The person who met us on our arrival at the apartment explained the working of all the appliances and there was a contact telephone number for any difficulties. The owners have thought of everything for your comfort.
Budapest is a joy to explore. Most places are within walking distance and anything further can easily be reached on the Metro which is close to the apartment. Some of the places we particularly enjoyed were visiting the Parliament Building. The decoration inside is magnificent. The same can be said for the Opera House which is in easy walking distance. If you like classical music it has a very interesting program. There are also tours held several times per day. The Central Markets are a must for food and souvenir shopping. If you enjoy just wandering or cycling go to Margaret Island. It is a delightful way to spend a long afternoon or morning. If you like to swim nothing could be better than a visit to Gellert Baths. There is even a spa bag provided at the apartment. The list goes on and on. There is the castle precinct, numerous churches one even built into rock, the cathedral as well as the Great Synagogue. Every day was filled with new sights and experiences. The food and wine were excellent. If you like red wine Budapest is the place to visit.

Wonderful, well located apartment
Apartment Max is a wonderfully appointed and equipped apartment in a lovely neighborhood with numerous shops and restaurants and convenient to the Budapest metro and surface transportation. The multi-room apartment is quiet, roomy and bright with floor-to-ceiling windows and a view of the park. We were very comfortable there and slept well. There's an elevator to facilitate with your luggage. There's numerous homey touches that John includes, including coffee cartridges, napkins, spices, condiments, several food items in the refrigerator and a welcome bottle of wine. The bathroom is modern, and the shower has a good flow and plenty of hot water. We also used the washer/dryer to wash our clothes. We've rented many apartments on our travels and this was among the very best. John (the owner) is trustworthy and reliable regarding your reservations and payment and he really goes the extra mile to ensure that you have a wonderful experience at Max and in Budapest.
A Home away from Home
From being whisked from the airport by the cab driver that John, the owner of the apartment, arranged for us, to the manager who let us in and showed us around the apartment which looked exactly like it was represented in the photos, to the briefs that John had prepared for how the apartment operates and what is to found in the neighborhood, we quickly settled right in and were able to enjoy our stay in Budapest. And the extra bonus was the fabulous collection of Dvd's that my husband enjoyed every evening. I enjoyed the patio overlooking one of the few parks in Budapest and I found the city to be a walker's delight. Don't miss the classical concerts at the church only two blocks away. We could not have asked for more.
Apartment Max - What an excellent apartment in a suberb location
Apartment Max is a large, spacious apartment which is located so close to some of the local bars and restaurants. It is also only a few minutes walk to a lot of the city centre attractions and the river. It came recommend to us and we would have no hesitation is recommending it to anyone else. Apart from the superb location, the apartment was tastefully decoarted and furnished and had free internet access and telephone calls. The small balcony was great for relaxing in the sun with a nice glass of wine in he afternoon after a hard day's sightseeing. If you are travelling to Budapest, this would be a perfect place for you to stay!
Fabulous Budapest apartment!
What a great place, and John has thought of everything! From a computer to a bottle of wine to breakfast food in the fridge, this place had it all! The balcony overlooking the park was a great hang out, the three cafes a block away were fun and the location was perfect. I will stay in any of John's Budapest rental when I return to Budapest.

Apartment Max offers the Max in apartment Rentals
Apartment Max is so very aptly named - providing the Max in travel comfort and satisfaction. It is spacious, clean, bright and thoroughly equipped with everything you will need during your stay. It is centrally located in Pest within a beautifully pedestrianized neighbourhood within walking distance of most everything you will want to experience while in Budapest. There is a lovely little balcony off the large bedroom of Max that overlooks a park and most mornings we could be found on that balcony sipping champagne and orange juice. The pictures of Max on the BVR website are representative of what the apartment looks like - except when actually in Max it has even more charm. The owner of Max is personable - charming actually...and professional with an experienced team in place to manage the apt - all trustworthy. Booking is easy - our only snag being someone else renting Max when we wanted it. Even then however Budapest Vacation Rentals has other apartment options available for rental. Our best recommendation - we keep going back to Max. We have stayed there several times now and will be back again in September 2011. Apt Max is tastefully, elegantly decorated and feels like a home away from home - missing is the cold, impersonal and cheap aesthetic of other apartment rentals not in the BVR portfolio. Each and every stay we felt we were getting value for our money - we would not keep going back otherwise. There is nothing lacking at Max. Our only complaint - Max is not ours and we are often tempted to be mum about singing the praises of Max so as not to share this treasure of Budapest - we want it all for ourselves! If you are thinking of renting Max you will be most interested to know if you can trust Budapest Vacation Rentals. You can. You will want to know if apt Max is clean. It is. You will be asking if it is located in a safe, good, convenient and central neighbourhood. Yes, it is. You will wonder if it is worth the money. It is. Enjoy. We do.

luxury in Budapest
We loved the comforts of apt Max. The bathroom and kitchen were wonderfully modern and well appointed and the living area was spacious and welcoming. The bedroom...well we slept like logs every night! The location was perfect, we wandered around Budapest and loved coming home to our quiet street to sit on the balcony with our glass of wine overlooking the park. It was a real treat to stay at apt Max...due to the amenities but also the thoroughnes of John the owner in supplying information and tips on the city and surrounding areas. We loved it!!!
Absolutely Fabulous Stay @ Apartment Max
Apt Max is perhaps the most wonderful place we have stayed (and we've stayed in many apartments in many places around the world). It is incredibly comfortable, well-equipped and perfectly located. We were able to walk almost everywhere from the apt and had easy access to the metro and trams when needed to explore sights a bit further out. The pictures and description are 100% on target. You will not be disappointed to stay here! John is a wonderful virtual host. He provided a wealth of information prior to the stay and has everything so nicely documented in the apartment.
As others have mentioned, we were greeted warmly by Ilona and welcomed with some delicious pastries, other "goodies" in the frig, a bottle of wine and tea and coffee. So wonderful after a long day traveling! Thank you!
Alajos was a delightful driver, getting up to airport.
The park across the way is beautiful; it was so pleasant to sit on the balcony reading books from the apt Max library.
The Nespresso machine -- ahhh! The convenience of the washer, dryer, and dishwasher - yea! The comfortable couches and bed...the wi-fi...the spa bag...the shower...all so verywonderful!
Hope you can tell that we truly enjoyed our stay! We loved the opera, the ballet, the museums, the walking tours, sitting in little cafes, chatting with locals about new found freedoms and the maturing democracy. A fabulous vacation (1week) enhanced by apt Max!
Home from home in Budapest!
I stayed here with my girlfriend for four days at the end of a two week trip around four european cities, the others being Berlin, Vienna and Bratislava. Whilst our other apartments were perfectly fine, this one in Budapest stood out head and shoulders and really felt like a home from home as well as being a beautiful apartment in an amazing location in a fabulous city. The owners have not just bought an apartment to make money from rentals, it is clear they love the city and the apartment itself and this shows in the small details and the welcoming information they provided us with (prior to and on arrival) which made the whole stay all the more relaxing.
The apartment is spacious, clean, and provides all the usuals you would expect plus more - fully accessible computer/internet, printer, phone to make calls on, washing machine, luxurious towels, tv/dvds and a significant amount of food and bottle of wine on arrival... all free, which when running about other cities to find some of these is most welcome!
If you are into your food you are also in for a treat as John (the owner), it would appear, has been to every restaurant in Budapest and has a website which provides you with all the information you could want to find bargain food stalls where the locals eat, to much more upmarket options and everything in between. As a result, we found sampling the food options to be one of the most memorable parts of our trip.
As you can tell I would easily recommend this apartment and I can assure you I'm not just easily impressed. Yes you might pay a little bit more than for the basic rentals, but the quality and extras far exceed the slightly higher cost and we would return tomorrow. Budapest is a beautiful city which a rich history and apt Max is a great base to start your exploring from... enjoy!!

Perfect apartment for Celebrating Special Occasion
My husband and I recently spent 3 weeks traveling in Budapest, Croatia, Bosnia, and Turkey while celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary. Although we stayed in several very nice apartments, Apt. Max was by far our favorite. I wanted a romantic environment for our anniversary, and I wasn't disappointed! The apartment is beautiful, the high ceilings, wood floors, and beautiful windows are amazing. We had breakfast every morning on the balcony, enjoying the views of the park. The owner, John, was an incredible host, calling several times to make sure we had all we needed. We are planning a month long trip to Europe again next year, and although there are many places I want to visit, we are planning on returning to Budapest, and apartment Max.
We just got back from Budapest this week and I can honestly say that this apartment was the best i have ever stayed in. From the moment i made contact with our host, John, I felt good about this rental. The communication was supurb, and John answered every question quickly no matter how trivial. Our experience in Budapest was only heightened by staying at this apartment. We arrived at the airport and a driver John had suggested was waiting there for us. We arrived at the apartment and Ilona was waiting there for us. A quick explanation of some of the workings and she was off. We opened the fridge and discovered meats, cheese, eggs milk, A bottle of wine, and some pastries, along with nespresso pods. This was great because it meant that we did not have to hit the market that day. The apartment itself embraces you, and allows you to feel as if it is your home, from the computer and wifi, to the television, to the incredible library of books and tourist guides. I can whole-heartedly tell you that this is a place I would stay again for even longer than 10 days. I know many reviews have said that it is the little things that make staying at John's apartments a home away from home, and they are correct. If i had one word to describe this apartment rental it would be: Perfect!

Outstanding City - Superb accommodations
Very rarely do you find an owner that knows exactly what travelers need to create the perfect vacation. John & Jeanne's extensive travel experiences have perfected their skills as hosts and have left their guests unwanting of anything more.
Llona's welcome greeting, Alojas' taxi and smiling face, welcoming pastries and a fridge stocked with just enough necessities to eliminate the need for immediate shopping were just the start. Apartment Max was one of the most well appointed apartments I've seen in my 35 years of travel. The location is wonderful and the detailed information John has left for his guests leaves no room for questions or problems. Just when you think it can't get better, you have use of a computer and phone with free calls to the U.S. Unheard of anywhere else !! I took his advice and had a 1:30 minute massage with andrea. I have to say it was one of the best I've had.
So, how do you convey to family & friends the "feeling" of Budapest and John & Jeanne's attention to detail ? Only one way - just booked 2 weeks for next year. Budapest stole my heart. John's incredible humor and flexibility and the beautiful accommodations made it an easy decision to come back next year and continue to explore.
Wonderful time in Budapest
In our trip to Budapest, we decided to rent an apartment in place of staying at a hotel. We chose Max, and had such a great experience, that I doubt we would enjoy to stay in a hotel again. The location is excellent, in front of a nice park, quiet, and a walking distance to almost everywhere. Lots of cafes and restaurants,ATM in the corner, everything we wanted was just there. The apartment is beautiful, very confortable and had everything we needed and more, washer, drier, dishwasher, a computer and telephone with free service to the United States and many other countries, a expreso machine that made the best coffee at home. Max had such a homey feeling that was hard to leave. Every detail had been thought at, at our arrival we were welcomed by Ilona with a bottle of wine and pastries, we didn't have to run to the supermarket because the refrigerator had milk, eggs, even cold cuts!, John Farago, the owner, answered right away my e-mails, before and during our stay. We even had some rainy days, and enjoyed very good movies and books from Max's library. I tell all my friends what a great experience we had, and I
recommend it to everyone that plans to enjoy Budapest.

Oasis in Budapest
We stayed in "Max" for five nights in July 2010. We rate this apartment highly for location and "content" (and also for communications with the owner).
Max is situated quite centrally in Pest and we only made modest use of public transport. We felt safe in the area of Max. A gem is the tidy wooded park across the street of Max which adds a feeling of peace in a busy city. The apartment's small balcony is of real use as there is hardly any traffic in the street (dead-end street).
Max is truly a stylish apartment, much more than being a plain utilitarian or minimalistic as short-term rental apartments usually are. Max is for the discerning traveller. Apart from being stylish, Max is well equipped. We found the owner's instructions and guidance very helpful in coming quickly to grips with "operating" the apartment and its content. For example, the washing machine; and who has not struggled with "foreign" washing machines for doing the laundry?
Upon our arrival (late afternoon) we found some ready to enjoy supplies (yummy) and some start-off bits in the fridge - a really nice touch any weary traveller would appreciate. The non-edible supplies present made for a quick start. We left some euro currency to contribute to replenish supplies.
Our second stay at Max - couldn't have been better!
We stayed at apartment Max for the second time this July, and this stay was just as wonderful as the first. Max is situated in a perfect Pest location, walking distance to everything: restaurants, transit, museums, the opera, the main market, shopping, even the Gellert baths. Despite the busy-ness of Pest, Max's immediate neighbourhood is quite quiet: the few surrounding blocks are mostly intended for pedestrian traffic, and directly outside the front doors is an exquisitely groomed park, Karolyi Kert. If you are traveling with children, the park and its playgrounds makes the location even more ideal. Max's owner attends to literally every detail and will organize a taxi at the airport with trusted driver. Fresh pastries and other delicacies await one's arrival. The apartment has a wireless internet, a nice apple computer, an IP phone for free calls worldwide as well as a local cell phone, multiple guidebooks, laminated maps, extra toiletries, and staff on the ground to contact in case of need or emergency. No detail neglected!
The apartment is a large one-bedroom, probably best suited for a couple or small family. Very high ceilings and tasteful decor - very sophisticated. We enjoyed the many cafes and restaurants within walking distance, particularly Cafe alibi and the Gerloczy Cafe, but it is well worth exploring Budapest by foot and taking in its various neighbourhoods...
Tourists feeling like we lived there
My wife and I stayed at apartment Max in June 2010 and truly had a wonderful time. It was a great opportunity for us to mix business and pleasure. The location of the apartment was ideal to allow ua to do both. We could easily walk a few blocks to our meeting place. Being in front of Karolyi Kert provide us with a quaint, quiet spot that was close to many amenities such as restaurants, shopping, supermarket, and Metro station. This made it easy for us to be tourists yet feel like we lived there. We had relaxing breakfasts in the balcony a couple of times. We were gratified by the a great job the owner has done furnishing the apartment with many amenities for the guests. It was particularly helpful having a computer available with internet access and a phone line with direct USa access through Vonage. The apartment also had an array of video technology and Dvd's, that although I didn't have a chance to watch, I was also able to use by connecting my Ipad to your TV and watch a couple of movie rentals we had downloaded before we left the USa. Having alajos providing transportation to and from the airport was also a blessing. It removed our need to worry about dealing with the uncertainties of transportation in a foreign country and giving addresses in an unfamiliar language. Alajos was reliable, helpful, nice, and well priced for all the services he provided. When we arrived, Ilona was waiting and had everything ready for us. She kindly gave us a good inservice on the appliances and other amenities in the apartment. The apartment was clean and everything was working properly. We were pleasantly surprised to find a few staples in the refrigerator (cheese, salami, etc). Also bottle of wine and tea and coffee on the counter were welcomed so we didn't feel we had to rush and do grocery shopping right away. All the travel information material and other tips about Budapest you have collected and made available to the guests were also extremely useful.
Apartment Max fans
Apartment Max is lovingly furnished in a wonderful collection of both modern comforts and old world charm. The bathroom is completely new with a huge walk in shower plus double sinks, and tile flooors while the kitchen, washer/dryer, and computer station satisfy your 21st century needs. But the apartment itself, the balcony, the reading nook, the antiques, the high ceilings all transport you to a different time. It is spotless, well located, and the owners are a delight. Their love of Budapest is palpable. We totally recommend apartment Max for your stay in Budapest.
A Great Place to Stay
I'd just like to add our praise for both the facilities of the Max apartment and owner John's thoughtfulness as a host.
We had 20 nights in the apartment in May/June 2010 and were sorry to leave. It was great to be able to catch up for a beer with John, although I fear his enthusiasm for Budapest is seriously contagious.
Now, if we can only convince him to set up similar apartments in our other favourite parts of the world...
Home from home
Beyond the great location (close to everything yet quiet), the apartment felt like home.
I am amazed at the multitude of the items that we ended up using that are usually only found in a lived-in home: adhesive tape, scissors, the alarm-clock, a game on the coffee table, the drying rack when we got soaked in the rain, an umbrella that even came with us on our side-trip to Vienna and back, and probably many more.
Dealing with John was a pleasure all along. From the first e-mail message, his friendly approach and great sense of humor became evident (a personal note: albeit our interaction was conducted in English, John's particular genre of humor is full of traces of the typical, subtle, dry-yet-gentle, very witty, Hungarian variety which is being practised in my Hungarian-speaking family - it reveals his lineage).
John chose to not charge us for the night we spent in Vienna while leaving our belongings in the apartment. Also, he called us at the apartment. He also had a birhtday cake delivered for my wife, as a gift, before our arrival.
The apartment is sparkling clean. Ilona greeted us and showed us around (in English, as my wife and daughter do not speak Hungarian). She is a really nice person.
Disliked: nothing. Liked: many things. If I am pressed to pick just one, it would probably be waking up in the morning to the view of the park.
I will definitely come back for more.
To the Max
After my 2 week trip, I could not imagine having
stayed anywhere better. The elegant decor gave a
wonderful Old World feel but John and Jean have
provided every modern convenience imaginable. A
fully functional and equipped kitchen, internet,
voip phone etc. It claims a perfect location in a
great neighborhood. Everything was nearby. The
metro being a 5 minute walk away brought access to
the entire city in well under an hour to anywhere.
While I would not wish anyone to have the same
misfortune, I fell ill on the trip and was mostly
homebound for 8 days. However this is where I was
truly fortunate staying at Apartment Max. While
they have put together a wealth of information
regarding touring the city as well, they also had
the information I needed to comfortably navigate my
needs to seek help. Not only do they provide a
beautiful apartment in which I was almost happy to
be stuck in, but also the comfort and security in
knowing they were there to help if needed as John
called a few times through the weeks to ensure I
was enjoying the apartment and stay in Budapest. I
express my thanks to John and Jean and wish anyone
staying with them in Apartment Max a wonderful trip
to the beautiful city that is Budapest.

Great Stay in Apartment Max
My husband and I have both traveled extensively for business and pleasure,
but have rarely found accommodations as beautiful and comfortable as
Apartment Max in Budapest! John Farago is a wonderful host who thought
about every detail to make our 10-day stay in Budapest relaxing and
enjoyable. We were met at the airport by the driver John recommended to
us, met at the apartment by his agent, and found his impeccably clean, well
decorated apartment waiting for us stocked with snacks and expresso-
makings for our first day there. We usually use 4 or 5 star hotels, and
found we much preferred this large and airy apartment; we could open the
big double-paned windows to get fresh air, the bathroom is ultra-modern,
the kitchen modern and well-stocked for cooking, had Internet access, big
screen TV & DVD, and my bad back really appreciated his good mattress
and comfortable furniture. The apartment is in a lovely part of Budapest
overlooking a small park. Most of the time we walked from there to our
destinations: Vaci Utca, the farmers market, bakeries, cafes, etc. or took
one of the nearby metros. John left detailed info and recommendations
about everything that mattered to us; we followed his advice most of the
time, and were always pleased that we did. It is like having a good friend in
Budapest to call on! He and his agent responded immediately to the few
problems we had: minor things, like when the expresso machine broke they
replaced it with another within hours. Having this lovely apartment as our
base in Budapest was a major factor in the success of our vacation. We
went to Budapest in part to attend the Spring Music Festival. The festival
was excellent, the apartment is great, and now we think we may come back
and do it all again next spring.
The apartment was exactly as described on John's web sight and the photos
are accurate. We would recommend this property highly to our friends and
the moment your search ends...
If you have been looking for an apartment in Budapest for a while and trying to compare apartments you've found so far, this is where you can stop. You definetely, without any doubt found the right place.
You may wonder about location: Perfect! Buy a guide book (I bought Rick Steve's) and you'll see Karolyi Kert (Karoly garden) which Apt max faces (and you have a balcony, this is not very usual), written somewhere, probably in the walking tours section. So you are looking at a garden with playground for kids, within the city, in walking distance to anywhere you want to go in Budapest.
Apartment itself: During our stay we (couple, age 30-35) tried to find out things that John and Jeannine somehow might have skipped to provide for the guests in the apartment. We really tried hard, but nothing! We absolutely could find nothing. You have whatever you may need, more than you need in this apartment. You'll admire the details as we did.
Price: From your first email to the end of your stay, you will feel that John and Jeannine are not doing this for money, as if they are sent from somewhere (?) trying to make you happy. That's why you will probably get the best price/quality ratio, if not a treat.
Whatever you read in their website aboout the apartment is true, except the photos. The apartment is more beautiful and larger than it looks in the pictures.
Just book it before it's too late...

Home away from home
Apt Max is everything and more that you could ask for! I decided to travel
alone to Hungary-confirmed for my travels and a commendations . The
owners sent great information regarding the apartment, transportation to
and from the airport, places and things to do, answers to my questions
regarding currency issues, referrals of day trips to experience Hungary, etc.
Apt Max-great location! Great condition! If I could live in Budapest I would
want Max as my place of residency. Super clean, spacious, safe,
comfortable, near multiple metro stations, walking distance to everything,
quiet yet right in the heart of the city. Amenities were perfect. Was able to
make a great cup of coffee every morning. Laundry, towel warmer in the
bathroom, balcony overlooking a park... it's prefect .
I have traveled alone and rented apartments in other countries and I have
never experienced such thoughtfulness, hospitality, and availability of
owners as I did while staying at Max. The owners of Apt Max are people
who really appreciate the city of Budapest, their property and want you, the
guest, to get the most out your travels and experiences.

A wonderful experience
My wife and I stayed in Apartment Max for 5 nights in late November. It was fabulous!
The apartment is ideally located in a very quiet neighborhood directly adjacent to a lovely park. It is a short walk to numerous restaurants, shopping, the Central Market, the underground, and the major sites.
Apartment Max is spacious and has been beautifully decorated. It has been completely restored and upgraded with A/C; a modern, large bath; a fully equipped kitchen; and, a washer/dryer. It also features some neat and unexpected amenities including: a computer with internet hookup, a VOIP phone that provides free local and international calling, an extensive library of DVD's, an Apple music system that is loaded with hundreds of songs, and Nespresso coffee maker.
Overall, we found the apartment to be comfortable, warm and cozy. We enjoyed sipping coffee (with fresh goodies from the Central Market) in the morning and wine at night while we overlooked the park. On cold or rainy days it was convenient and fun to take a break from touring and return to the apartment where we would brew up some tea and read or listen to music. In short, our stay at Apartment Max became an important and very pleasant part of our overall travel experience. Very much different from a typical hotel stay.
John, the owner, was a wonderful and attentive host. His Budapest-based staff arranged for transporation to/from the airport, met us at the apartment (which had been stocked with food and drink), and made certain we were familiar with all of its features.
My wife and I hope to return to Apartment Max and recommend it without any reservation. Read more
Response from john farago - 12/13/2009
Just a brief addition for clarity's sake ... the 'large bath' referred to in the review is a large bathroom with double sink and double shower; we do not offer a bathtub and don't want anyone for whom that is an important feature to be disappointed on arrival.
A perfect location for a girly retreat!
From the first email with the owner the service was impeccable, every email was thorough and informative, and the information supplied left no room for fret. John was without a doubt, the most efficient homeowner I have ever rented a property from.
The flat was located on a quiet, central street five minutes walk from the main shopping streets and a mere 15 minutes from the grand Gellert spa (I cannot recommend this spa enough, all the others fail in comparison!).
We wanted for nothing during our stay, everything was provided, a lovely wine and cake welcome, fast internet connection, impeccably clean flat with every comfort, phone numbers for every eventuality.
Being so centrally located meant no money was spent on cabs, every map and entertainment flyer meant that we were never lost, and occasional calls from John ensured that any questions were answered and recommended cafes and restaurants could be discussed.
For two girls on a three night retreat with the intention of visiting spas, indulging in massages, and drinking in nice locations, everything about this apartment was perfect, the exact location for all that we wanted. High ceilings, wooden floors, SPACE, VERY competitive rates, and a great coffee machine!!
We loved it, and I've already recommended it to friends hoping to visit in the new year.
A beautiful apartment with every amenity
This was our first visit to Budapest, and what a treat it was to stay here. My
husband and I loved the apartment's rare mix of old-world elegance and
modern flair and convenience--the stunning high ceilings and architectural
details and antiques, the little balcony that overlooks a beautiful park, the
sleek kitchen and bath fittings, and plenty of room to stretch out and kick
back after a day of touring the city. As if those weren't enough, we really
appreciated the many thoughtful extras the owner provided. When we
arrived, the refrigerator was already stocked with Hungarian delicacies and
everything we needed for breakfast, plus a lovely plate of fresh pastry.
There was not only free wireless but a desktop already on and connected to
the Internet that we could use; a Nespresso machine for morning
cappuccino with a supply of coffee; and a TV and DVD player with a wide
selection of films. There was also a phone we could use for local and
international phone calls and a library of fascinating books about the city.
The apartment's location is perfect--it's on a quiet street, across from a
lovely little park, yet a convenient walk to shopping, transportation,
restaurants, major sights, and the infinitely delicious treats of Budapest's
Market Hall. The owner also shares his wealth of information about Budapest
on his website and blog. I only wish we could have stayed longer than four
Simply put - We will do this again - Visit Budapest again and st
We had a unique situation in that we were in our friend's wedding (not just as attendees) in Transylvania for a few days and then explore Budapest for a whole week thereafter. We flew to Budapest, made a detour to Transylvania for a few days, and came back to Budapest and stayed at Apt. Max for a week. John was really gracious to let us keep the apartment during our back-and-forth. This was heaven-sent for us since we could settle in to Apt. Max, and take just our clothes and necessities for the wedding and come back to the apartment. We really, really appreciated this gesture.
The apartment is beautiful, romantic and breath-taking in terms of the decor, the sunlight, the park at Karolyi Kert. And so perfect for vacation and relaxing (Szechenyi style, I say!) - There was the Nespresso Coffee and a welcoming bottle of wine (Psst! I consumed it all!) - And the desserts from Jeg Bufe' and the eggs and the milk in the fridge. Not to mention all the books and the maps and guides.
John gave us so many tips to explore Budapest in all respects - restaurants, navigating around, Tokaj, sight-seeing, Great Market Hall, Raday Utca, neighborhood places - invaluable!
The location is just perfect. You're a heart-beat away from Deak Ter (where all the train lines meet) and from Ferenciek Ter and from Varosmarty Ter (my favorite). While we loved exploring Buda and Pest - I gotta say - We really loved coming back to our apartment.
Anything we found on our favorite guide - Great Market Hall, Vaci Utca, Gerloczy Cafe, Parisi Udvar - we were right there. But what made the experience authentic for us was the apartment, the location, John and Ilona. We will do this again!
But, trust me, Hungarian language - that is another story - You're on your own on that one!

Luxury and Serenity in a Great Location
I have been to Budapest many times as I have family in the area. It was only after being in the apartment for a day or so that I realized how fabulous the location really is. You are minutes away from everything and yet have the serenity of a park like setting.
John and his team bring a completely professional approach to vacation rentals. I was met by the manager who gave me a thorough orientation and wonderful welcome. Anyone who is a novice to renting a vacation apartment in Europe has nothing to worry about. There are clear instructions for everything in the apartment and management is always available to answer questions or help.
The apartment itself is gorgeous - beautifully furnished and fully equipped with everything you need for self catering. I was traveling alone and made full use of the kitchen facilities which are top notch.
After spending the day with the relatives, apartment Max was a most welcome oasis at the end of the day where I could relax in complete comfort and security.

Apart Max_ a wonderful place to stay
We had a wonderful time in Budapest (particularly enjoyed the thermal baths) and we were overjoyed with Apartment Max. It's a beautiful and comfortable place to stay. It exceeded our expectations, so much...we didn't want to leave. We loved all the little gestures (maps, instructions, wine and pastries at our arrival) and we had the chance to enjoy the balcony, sipping a glass of wine before going out to dinner.
Great Apartment in Budapest
We had the opportunity to stay several days at Apartment Max in Budapest. After reading on the internet about John Farago and his Budapest Vacation Rentals, I knew his group of apartments sounded special, and this was confirmed the moment we arrived and were greeted in person by John. The apartment has been lovingly and thoughtfully prepared -- from the decor down to the last detail. We felt as though we were staying in a good friend's apartment! It was immaculate, quiet, and outfitted with many amenities, including comfortable furniture, (as well as the bed!) We especially appreciated the washer and dryer. John has thought of everything -- a shelf of guidebooks, a bottle of wine, gourmet espresso coffee maker with coffee, computer & printer (he even dropped off DVD's for us to use), a cell phone we could take out with us, as well as a VOIP phone for our use (no charge) to call anywhere in the world. This apartment was in a great location -- a few minutes walk from the subway, and not far from the city indoor market. John has prepared LOTS of info (both on the internet as well as in the apartment) to help you find your way around, recommended restaurants, etc. -- and he made reservations, suggesting special arrangements for my husband's birthday at Cafe Bouchon, a most delightful restaurant. John is a terrific host & took great care to make sure our stay was memorable, which it was….

An unforgettable experience in Budapest!
There isn’t another place I’d stay if returning to Budapest. By
accident we ended up in Apartment Max after the disappointing news
that Apts. Sarah and Belle were both rented for our desired winter
dates (late December). The kind owners generously offered for us to
stay in Max (larger than Sarah and Belle combined + addtl amenities)
at the same price. This was only the first of many kind gestures
before and during our stay. (FYI- Owners John and Jeanne rent six
apartments in Budapest,.) Their thoughtfulness is truly
unbelievable. Their website has a wealth of information- particulars
on each rental, suggestions for what to do/see, bios for their
“team” in Budapest and much more. This is a well-oiled machine. As
the owners were in Budapest shortly before our stay they offered to
pick up opera tickets, suggested what we might do and wanted to ensure
we had a memorable experience. They made our stay seamless from the
pickup at the airport to the orientation of the apartment plus all of
the extra special touches- pastries, milk, juice and fruit for the
following morning. The Nespresso machine with fully stocked pods was
the cherry on top! The quiet location off of Karolyi Kert was central
to good eateries and walking distance to many sites. As for amenities,
they’ve thought of it all- dishwasher, washing machine/dryer, very
modern bathroom, TV w/ DVD library, phone to call US, maps/guides,
computer with high speed internet. I can’t say enough about how
wonderful our experience in Budapest was due in no small part to our
stay in Apt. Max.
New York City
A wonderful, memorable experience.
John and Jean made our stay a pure pleasure. First, the apartment itself is
fabulous. Large, light, terrific location, wonderful view, quiet, comfortable, and
beautiful. But their attention to detail made us feel as if we were staying with
our best friends. The kitchen was fully stocked (even coffee pods for the
Nespresso machine!) with equipment and lovely cheese and pastries in the
fridge. The computer and phone worked. And there was information all over
- about the apartment and its amenities, the neighborhood, Budapest in
general, the best places to eat, buy foie gras, listen to music, etc.
It's really impossible to describe how nice it was, and how worth it.
Elegance in a picture perfect location
Max is a beautiful as everyone raves about. One of the best things was the ability to sit on the small patio and hear the neighborhood children playing in the small park across a small quiet street. You are as close as you possibly could be to all the attractions in Budapest but you felt you were living where Hungarian people lived.
We also ate at a small restaurant around the corner called Ruben that was very inexpensive and good. Staying here will make your stay in Budapest perfect. And the city lives up to its reputation. A wonderful experience.
We were concerned that the road outside the apt was undergoing "construction" as are all the roads in Budapest it seems. Well it turns out this was a "handmade" road where they workers were building beautiful stone roads/sidewalks. I swear in a week they finished 4 feet.. no problem with noise and it was amusing to watch. Seemed like it was Hungarians stimulus program to keep people employed.
We stayed at this apartment and thought it was delightful. It is well located and beautifully decorated.
The owners had thought of everything and also e ensure that all the bits and pieces that make a stay easy had been considered.
We were delighted with Apartment Max and have recommended it friends.
Apt. Max is MAXimum
This place is pure luxury. It is located on a quiet street facing a garden but right in the center of town, walkable to everywhere. The apartment is furnished with every amenity necessary, and then some - the owners have thought of little indulgences (welcome pastries and wine, a gourmet coffeemaker, multihead walk-in shower, a cell phone, computer with printer, every guidebook written) that make you feel like a cherished family guest rather than an anonymous tenant. The space itself is awesome, with turn-of-the-century charm, large windows, a terrace, and a supremely comfortable bed. Staying there absolutely "made" our visit. John and Jeanne, the owners, were delightful to work with and their website was extremely helpful in planning our trip, both before we arrived and while there. Despite the temporary street construction going on during our stay (which will only make the street that much nicer once done), we couldn't have asked for a nicer place.
THIS is the apartment you want when in Budapest
I stay in apartments for most of my vacation travel and have done so for the last ten years or so.
This is the all time number one best apartment I have stayed in in a decade of vacation apartments.
This is ignoring the fact that it is well located in Central Budapest nearby three destination restaurants (Central Kavehaus, Cafe Alibi and Afoldi Vendegli) and a gorgeous park and I am a sucker for parks. This apartment would have gotten a best of decade even if it were next to a glue factory.
By rental standards in major European cities, this is a huge apartment. We are not talking a garret in the Marais with every square inch being used for storage and twisty-turny furniture crammed into nooks and crannies. The living room is huge, the bedroom is huge, the bathroom is generous and the kitchen ... well okay the living room is huge. Ceilings are twenty to twenty feet high with nice plasterwork on the top. Windows go up all the way to the ceiling. The furniture in the living room is actually arranged to make small usable discussion areas - so there is actually way more room if you want to move sofas and tables around. (But then who wants to watch TV from a county away?)
The artwork is superlatively chosen. You want a tourist apartment's art to have "some" reference to the place you are (so you don't think you have woken up in Cleveland) without being tacky tourist art. (Puhleez, no Eiffel Towers or Toulouse Lautrecs in French apartments ....) The selection here is astute.
Parquet work on the floor is first rate as are most of the decorative objets.
Amenities include good internet, a fine tourist library and a well equipped kitchen - but lots of places have these.
The shower is good if you like to be sprayed from funny angles. (There is normal too)
The bed itself is excellent.
For space, style and location, you can't beat this.

Excellent location, living quarters, warm and inviting
Our stay at Max was exceptional. The living quarters are in a lovely section of the city with a window porch overlooking a park. The furnishings are comfortable and grand all at the same time. Excellently located near the rapid rail, key city sites, and grocery locations. It is also very safe. We had a wonderful time and felt like we had a home away from home at Max. We were there for 10 days and highly recommend this apartment. The owner is helpful and friendly as well.
Perfect in every respect
We are a family of 4 ( 2 adult children) who rented this fantastic apartment in July 2008. It is hard to know where to start in singing its praises... was it the superb position opposite the delighful Karolyi Kert gardens, complete with bedroom juliet balcony? Was it the attention to detail with the pastries left on the bench, the vast DVD collection and the fridge with some basic supplies thoughfully considered? Was it John and Jeanne's wonderful suggestions as to restaurants and sights to see and because they happened to be in town actually booked for us! Was it the personal service even down to favourite goulash recipe posted on their website? No ... basically I think this apartments strength is that it is loved and so it felt like a real home. We absolutely loved our stay here, Full or origianl character, walking distance to everything and so well appointed.
Our family all agree this was a real highlight of our visit to Eastern Europe. You cannot go wrong!
A calm enclave of relaxed enjoyment in an interesting and enjoya
From our first contact it was apparent that our hosts had left nothing to chance in their quest to make our stay in Budapest an enjoyable and relaxing experience.
All the information you could possible want was provided to help us become quickly settled into the feeling that we had come across a real "find" and that we had made a good decision to stay at "Max" even before we had left Australia.
We were sent all of the hints, insights and support anyone could possibly need. Enough to enable us to walk to the apartment from the subway station and in 5 minutes of looking around feel like we had stayed there many times before.
The attention to detail is staggering. The effort made to make us feel welcome was the best I'd ever experienced.
All of our high expectations were met. The layout of the apartment is great - it is really a well appointed and comfortable place. All of the things that you have at home are there - after a few hours it seems like you have always lived there.
There is a real sense of "belonging" that sort of envelopes you. All of this comes from the efforts made by the owners of "Max" to leave nothing to chance. Directions of where to walk around for breakfast, suggestions of what to see and how to get there, recommnedations of restaurants, etc all of these things made us 'fit' into Budapest.
As the urban renewal is completed the new streetscape around the apartment will complement the park next door and the many small cafes and books stores all within easy walk will create a lifestyle that everyone will enjoy.
The apartment is great value and has such a relaxing ambience. It is also a great place in which to entertain. We had a sensational dinner party for 8. Food from the market which is within walking distance, fine wine from the local bottle-shops and all of the necessary cooking and eating equipment was already with the walls of Max (including a dish-washer)
Post breakfast coffe on the balcony over looking the park was hard to beat.

The Best Apartment Ever!!
The "Best" is a big claim, but we have stayed in apartments all over Europe
and Apartment Max shines above the rest. Like Apartment Max, many look
great in the photos, are very comfortable and well situated; but what this
apartment has over the rest is heart.
It overflows with hospitality and truly becomes your home away from home.
Before you arrive your helpful hosts provide a bounty of city information
and when you arrive the fridge is thoughtfully stocked with essentials, the
kitchen has all you need, there is an espresso machine with coffee, not just
wireless internet, but a computer to use as well and not just a large
television, but a wonderful library of movies.
The location is the perfect mix of quiet but central. The balcony opens to a
picturesque park and the centre of Budapest is a short stroll. Budapest is a
great city to explore, but when you are finished soaking up the nightlife or
soaking yourselves in the many city baths, your return home to this classic
apartment is a joy in itself.
Apartment Max has all the charm, quality and facilities you need, but for us
meeting the owner, John Farago, was the star attraction. His thoughtful and
caring personality is the reason why it's so special. In the end it's the
genuine hospitality that John provides that makes Apartment Max... the best
Elegance in Budapest
This apartment has everything you could imagine a traveler might require. The high ceilings, stately furnishings and beautiful park off the balcony are extras as it located within walking distance of 75 percent of all the sights. My wife and I loved it and will always stay here when we're in Budapest. It has too many extras to list including two telephones, cable tv, washer/dryer, internet, kitchen with coffee maker and coffee, food in the refrigerator, etc. We highly recommend this apartment and know anyone who stays here will want to return. It's the best apartment we have found in Europe.

Beautiful apartment! Great owners!
Our stay in Apartment Max was absolutely perfect! The apartment is beautiful - everything you could hope for - with a great bathroom and living room and a fantastic view of the park. The location is so easy. We could walk everywhere and it is located mere blocks away from great cafes and the fantastic central market. The owners are extremely helpful and always available answer any questions. The aparment is stocked with tons of information about the city and we always felt that we could ask for advice no matter how silly the question. We were lucky enough to stay for a couple of weeks and Max was a perfect place to call home while visiting this most amazing city. I would return in a second!!
A great trip!
I took my mother and my daughter to Budapest, for my mother's birthday. I was very fortunate to stay in apartment Max. The apartment is lovely and amazingly located, facing a beautiful garden, and a convenient walking distance from a lot of places, including the Central market and Opera (this was very important for my mother, who is in her 70s). The most incredible thing though was all the advice and support that we received from John, the owner of the apartment. He suggested restaurants (even helped us make reservations), guides, and places to visit. When we arrived from the airport (we were met a driver recommended by John), there were snacks for us in the refrigerator, and pastries and a bottle of wine for my mother's birthday. Every detail was thought through, and John was an e-mail away (the apartment has wireless Intrnet, and a MAC).
He made this trip very memorable.
We definitely will come again, and recommend this apartment to our friends.
Lovely apartment on the square
This sweet place goes on the top our list of good memories of Budapest. The apartment is in a quaint, unassuming building on the corner of a beautiful, quiet square, just steps from transportation, and a few blocks from the center of the city. Great cafes in the neighborhood, easy access to everything. Walking into the courtyard entrance to the apartment, we felt we'd stepped back in time, and the apartment itself was a delightful surprise: recently renovated, all modern utilities, spotless, and thoughtfully outfitted. Very comfortable. The ceilings are very high and the rooms are large and spacious. We spent several hours each day reading and sipping coffee, enjoying being there with no desire to go out. The hosts think of everything - guide books, computer, treats in the fridge, coffee, recommendations for where to eat. Like having an invisible concierge.
a gem in the heart of Budapest
We came across Apartment Max through Sydney friends who'd stayed here in the summer; we wanted a cosy bolthole in the very depth of winter, close to public transport, in case it was too cold to walk, and near to coffee shops and the main sights. We couldn't have anticipated how good Apartment Max was - there were only 2 of us, but it would easily take 2 couples, as each room was accessible to bathroom and toilet. All the ingredients were sparkling new, and the owner generously provided a few provisions to get us started on our holiday. We had everything for a dream holiday away from home - not just all the attractions around us, but also internet access, a DVD and book library and a great outlook across the park. I couldn't recommend Max too highly - if only there was an Apartment Max in every city!
FABULOUS Apartment Max with a BALCONY
My daughter and I stayed in the lovely, spacious Apartment Max for 4
nights. It is a beautifully renovated apartment with everything you
could possibly want during your stay. There is a telephone for free
calls to the US, a computer, a cellphone to use while you are there and
lots of Budapest guidebooks and Hungarian phrasebooks and books in
general,including books about Hungary.
I highly recommend this
apartment and any of the other apartments owned by the same owners.
rented places that have little character, but Apartment Max was a place
you would be happy to live in with interesting places nearby.
owners live in New York but love Budapest and their enthusiasm is
catching. They help with everything you could possibly want while you
are there, and help make any arrangements you need before you come. They
are incredibly nice and a total pleasure to rent from. They have great
restaurant recommendations - we loved Borsso and ideas for places in the
city to visit.
The location is great. It's across from a park and you
can walk to shopping, eating, trams and buses.
It was great to go
home to the luxurious Apartment Max after sightseeing. It was so much
nicer than staying in a hotel room and big enough for a whole family to
be quite comfortable.
