Sebastian, FloridaThe Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Left on 10/29/2012 for a stay in October 2012
The Good: This is one of the most well appointed cabins I have ever rented. It even had a crock pot, a cast iron fry pan, a teflon fry pan and a turkey roaster! The dishes were Pfaltzgraff, there were plenty of wine glasses, place mats, cloth napkins, pots and pans. The towels were wonderful, the bedding was excellent. The cabin was decorated by someone who has great taste. It was very very comfortable. We spent many nights either at the outside fire pit or inside by the fire. There is only one cabin in the area that you can see so it is wonderfully remote and surrounded by trees. The autum leaves were amazing. It is only about 45 minutes to Boone along good roads. Blowing Rock and Banner Elk are close also. The rental agent was great to work with.
The Bad: Although you cannot see the highway, it is close enough that you can hear the traffic when sitting outside; it does not bother you when you are inside. There is no lake view. The lake is a hefty hike from the cabin. We drove to a local marina and rented a pontoon boat for the afternoon and went all around the beautiful Lake Wautauga. The local general store does not carry wine (beer only) and has an extremely limited supply of grocery items, so make sure you stock up on everything before leaving civilization. There is no cell phone or internet service, only a land line and the land line does not allow long distance calls. The cabin is located on Banjo Ridge Road and there is absolutely no road sign from the highway. You have to look for a cement entrance way (gateway). I have attached photos to show you what to look for. When you arrive, there is a lock box with the keys in it. There is a downstairs door and an upstairs door. Use the keys to unlock the upstairs door. Do not bother unlocking the downstairs door because you will not be able to access the upstairs due to a locked door at the top of the inside stairs that is not a keyed lock.
The Ugly: The worst problem is the driveway. It is so very steep that you can see cars have spun out on the dirveway and damaged the asphalt, which makes it even more difficult to get up the driveway. And, if you get to the top of the driveway, there is no way to turn around. When we were there we had clear skies and dry pavement, we had a front wheel drive SUV and could not get up the driveway, we returned the SUV to the car rental dealer and tried a different type of vehicle, no luck. We had to park the car at the bottom of the driveway. So, you may need a four wheel drive even in good weather to get up the driveway.

After your stay you sounded like everything was great & am thankful for you kind words. Yes, the cabin is private & secluded buried in the woods. Virtually no neighbors except one cabin in the distance. It does have great road access paved to your back door & just off a two lane paved road that may see's 20 cars daily. So road noise isn't often, nor can you see the road from the cabin. You could walk to the lake which I've done but yes, it is a long walk so walking isn't recommended or advertised at this particular place & one reason why its priced so reasonable. The drive to the local marina where you rent boats is a short 10 min drive. Those folks are great, sell maps & beer. You're right the local store doesn't but all the marina's sell beer & a gas station too which is right around the corner. Dry Hill (as its named) is dry & don't have a alcohol license. I don't think Carolyn & Richard would mind selling it but so many other places around them already do & with the extra expense of getting the proper license its just too cost prohibited. Your right, there isn't a large grocery store, liquor store or Mc Donald's in this immediate area, which is very secluded, private & mostly Cherokee National Forest. There's a giant food lion, Harris Teeter & Ingles on this side of Boone exactly 20 mins from your back door. In our directions we encourage folks to stop at these local markets on their way in, so their return trip to town is optional. Cell phone service varies according to your carrier & the age of your phone. We warn guests to bring a calling card, but major services like mine with Verizon, & Sprint work great. If you have an unknown local carrier or an older phone, your right it probably wont work well & again thats why we encourage everyone to spend $3 at a gas station & pick up a calling card especially if you have to make calls to loved ones. Its in the list of 'recommended things to bring' that every guests gets & encourage all guests to review before leaving home.
This area is very mountainous. The Driveway & the roads are hilly. Our housekeeper Barbara climbs the driveway in her older automobile without 4wheel drive, turns around too without any trouble at all. Maybe with all the leaves falling this view was obstructed. And with such a short driveway its easy to just park at the bottom & walk up to the cabin. Glad you mentioned that about the key. I'll be sure to relocate the lock box beside the main entrance door so theres no confusion.
Donna, thanks so much for all your comments I'm sure you'll get lots of votes from people which seems to be of importance to you - I guess theres some kind of a contest.
Our office takes great pride in taking A+ care of all our guests. we have housekeepers &maintenance on premise or less than a five minute drive to assist you anytime during your stay. Our cabins are all newer construction, some on the water and others just a short drive to the water & or marina's. Some with all the bells & whistles & others that are more cost conscious. We try and fit every guest with the right cabin.
Peace to you and yours. -

ColumbiaRomantic peaceful get away
Left on 12/04/2011 for a stay in November 2011
We are three couples and we enjoy weekend getaways with each other. This place (especailly for the price) was excellent, clean and the pictures don't even do it justice. My hubby and I had the master which was very spacious, the entire cabin was well maintained. Melody gave a welcome package with lots of information that lead us in lots of different directions. Its a great location. You not only get to see Tn but also Nc and Va all in about 30 mins drive. Thyey took good care of us. I called once to ask a couple of questions and found a very nice housekeeper. We have already reserved another weekend here. Hope anyone reading this feels very comfortable about renting anything from Melody. she does a great job.
