Left on 01/23/2013 for a stay in December 2012
I traveled to Zanzibar the day after Christmas, December 26th, 2012. This was to be my second time ever in africa (the first being Uganda in January 2012). I was visiting a friend, who was part of a much larger group (20 people), so I was excited to get there, meet new people, and have some drinks on the beach. To summarize, Crazy Mzungos made that quite the reality.
Crazy Mzungos is run by a wonderful couple, Matthew & Michelle. My first recommendation to one would be to schedule your trip and inquire if they will be there. You will leave Zanzibar with two new friends. They know how to efficiently run a business, make their customers happy and comfortable, and make sure your stay is top notch. They also go the extra mile to get to know everyone; where they are from, what their hometown is like, what they do, etc. It's truly genuine, and great to be a part of. When you arrive, you will likely be greeted by anthony. He is the general manager of Crazy Mzungos. Anthony doesn't fall far from the tree of Matthew and Michelle. He is generous, helpful, and effective. He goes out of his way to make sure you are comfortable, and like M&M;, will make sure he gets to know you, too. He was quick to make accomdations and special requests to our rooms available, and is a true gentleman.
After you settle in, take in the beautiful view of the beach, intriguing artwork/architecture of the bar area, and start to relax, you will certainly want to grab a drink and something to eat. Start off with the cocktail of the day. The bartenders are Tanzanian gentleman named Emma(nuel) and Lucas. Talk about a fun group of guys! They are full of personality, tremendous at their job, and did a fine job of handling a large crowd on New Years Eve!! Emma is also a fine musician. Get to know these guys - they have great stories, will give you great information about the island, and are fun pair of guys to hang out with. Ordering off of the menu is easy. Chef Moses is a gem! You could close your eyes and pick something, and it will be awesome. I ate at Crazy Mzungos every night except for when we went to The Rock at Zanzibar. Crazy Mzungos had unbelievable food. It was bursting with flavor, innovation, and culture. The seafood was awesome, and salads were so tasty. On top of all of that, the prices are very reasonable and affordable.
Perhaps what I most cherished about my time spent at Crazy Mzungos were the people. Everyone did a fine job of working, but at the same time, it was like they were hanging out with you and getting to know you. I keep in touch with Matthew, Michelle, Anthony, Emma, Lucas and Moses all through facebook, that is how great I got to know them. Low Budget, High budget, whatever - it is worth coming and meeting the people at Crazy Mzungos!
Oh, and don't forget to start your nights off with a few Crazy Juices:)

Leeds, United KingdomA must when visiting Zanzibar
Left on 11/08/2012 for a stay in August 2012
This place is a little gem and superbly ran by Matt & Michelle. From the moment we arrived, leaving our flip flops at our bungalow door we felt at home. This place is as chilled out and as relaxed you can get and you're basically made to feel lik part of the family throughout your stay and after.
It is well run, best deal, and the food is superb. I'm allergic to wheat however this presented no problems at all with the staff as all the food is cooked from fresh and therefore easily tailored for my requirements.
We stayed additionally, they made sure that all of our activities were paid for at fair prices, but wi here over the last 5 days of our 3 week visit to Zanzibar and believe me we finished our holiday on a high, in the best part of the island.
Matt and Michelle gave great advice as to what to do, and made sure we had the best prices for any excursions. The blue safari that we all went on was amazing even with the rain. We also had entertainment on the first night from a local dance troop.
The rooms here are simple, but they are spotlessly clean and comfortable. They tailor to your needs nicely as lets face it who wants to be in there room when you have the beach that they do here, great company and a cold beer in your hand.
I wouldn't think twice about recommending Crazy Mzungos to any of my friends and would very much like to return here again...I jut hope Matt still has that pink rugby ball ready!!!
My apologies this has taken a while to write but seriously thank you guys for making our last couple of days the best x -

Do not let the name "Crazy Mzungo's" mislead you into thinking that this is one big party place! On the contary, "Crazy Mzungo's" offers affordable and relaxing quality family accommodation right on the beach. Tempting fresh, organic, and delicious local cuisine is available daily with appetising choices for children. Our children made the most of shell picking and cycling on the beach, swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear water and enjoyed visits to other natural attractions close to the area. All these can be organised and negociated at competitive prices. The staff is accommodating, friendly and open to suggestions."Crazy Muzungo's" is a satisfying bed and breakfast holiday destination for a family to have fun and relax in Zanzibar!

Amazing place to stay if you don't want to spend a fortune. Full of character and relaxing atmosphere. The best asset for Grazy Mzungos is their staff. Without the owner we would have missed out on so many amazing places and being welcomed with a smile every time we arrived back in the hotel made our whole holiday. We actually went away to north for our second week of holiday and ended up coming back.

Though the name might lead you to believe that this hotel is a party spot, you're wrong. Crazy Mzungos was one of the most relaxing, well run, best deal, with the best food on the entire Island. Matt and Michelle, the owners and operators, made us feel like we were a part of their family. They took extremely good care of us and gave us the local insight on places to see and things to do. Additionally, they made sure that all of our activities were paid for at fair prices, but with the best possible staff/guides. Unlike many of the other hotels up that side of Zanzibar, their local staff members were respectful and completely honest. They do not have the lazy attitude of other hotels. Gerard, the head staff member, was hilarious and did everything in his power to make our time something memorable. Lastly, the food is the best on the entire island. We ate at a lot of different resorts, many of which were the major 5-star resorts, and none of them even came close to the quality of the food here. We are definitely coming back and we are definitely going to book out one of the major villas - either Vanilla arches or Saffron. The other rooms are incredibly priced, clean and comfortable. The changes to the site currently underway by Matt are going to make it even better. This is the best possible stay on the entire Island of Zanzibar.

My fiance and I, along with another couple, spent over two weeks at Crazy Mzungo's in august and it was the best vacation of our lives! Beautiful location-- the beach out front is gorgeous no matter if the tide is extremely high or extremely low. Matt and Michelle were incredibly helpful with booking Safari Blue trips, motorcycles, and recommending other parts of the East Coast for us to explore while we used Crazy Mzungo's as a home base. They also worked with my fiance to bring a traditional drumming and dance group in to help celebrate a milestone birthday! Everyone there is warm and helpful, from the hilarious and wonderful guys behind the bar (Garrard, Sele, and Muhu) to the chef whose daily menu kept us more than satisfied. Grilled octopus, mango-avocado salads, traditional Swahili barbecues... my mouth is watering as I remember it. We stayed in the Jungle banda, which was great for two couples. We didn't spend a lot of time in the rooms, since the lounge area, beach, and bar were far more fun. And make sure you try the Crazy Juice-- made with equal parts fresh juice and shots, it tastes like tropical madness and may or may not have had us swinging from the rafters! Big thanks to everyone at Crazy Mzungo's for their warm hospitality and making this experience unforgettable.

Wow wow wow!!!
My wife, myself and two friends shared the Jungle room for two weeks. The room was the perfect size for 2 couples. At first the room seemed very basic, but we quickly realized that the room will only be used for sleeping. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Michelle and Matthew and the excellent staff. The location of Crazy Mzungo's is a bit far from Stone Town, but this is a good thing. The location is quite and peaceful. There is a constant light breeze which helps to keep the Mozi's away. Not too far from Paje or the local store, The Rock restaurant, Monkey forest, and other great locations on the island.
After our two weeks we felt like we were apart of a family, not just a guest. The bar is a lot of fun at night and can get a bit crazy (with the help of lots of crazy juices). Matthew, Michelle and all the staff really did an excellent job of making sure that everyone was happy and apart of the family.
I would greatly recommend staying at Crazy Mzungo's to anyone going to Zanzibar. My wife and I will be returning again in the future.
Pro: great location, light breeze constantly, amazing staff and owners, tips about location site seeing and tours, crazy juice!!

We booked 5 nights in Crazy Mzungo's but it was so great we decided to stay 8 nights instead!
The hotel is right on the beach of Bwejuu, a beautiful beach where you can walk for miles. Bungallows rooms are simple and extremly clean. And if you're looking for a more comfortable place, the Villa bedrooms are really nice and well equiped (nice bathroom with hot water).
The owners are really friendly and welcoming, and so is the staff. Always helpful and doing really nice food & cocktails right on the beach, with a fresh new menu everyday.
We really had a great time and relaxing holidays and we would have loved to stay longer! -

We flew to Zanzibar after climbing Mt.Meru and Mt.Kilimanjaro.Our aim was to relax after a rewarding but also bone crunching hiking tour.
We found that and much more at Crazy Mzungo's.Actually,we found the Hotel by accident, when we walked along the sandy beach. There was an old VW beetle sitting in the sand infront of a big open timber structure with an even bigger palm leaf roof.We heard nice music and thought it's time for a stopover and a cold beer.We walked past a well stocked bar on the left
opposite was a large area with sofas, chairs and tables.this was the dining and meeting room.
From the high ceiling hung a large 'All Blacks' flag.A young lady(the manager we found out later)showed us
the beautifull local style accommodation huts at the back with one or two rooms all with double beds, mosquito nets and good sized bath rooms.Everything extremly clean. We were lucky to find one hut still vacant. Then came 10 memorable days of good food( top in- house cooking),good service, lots of fun and laughter with Michelle and Matthew(the owners)and the other guests.Matthew is a Kiwi (remember the flag)and Michelle is from South africa - obviously a fruitful combination. They really make their guests feel relaxed and at peace.
The sea (25-28 deg.celsius)is just infront of the hotel. If you want, you can relax under shade umbrellas or walk along the the palm tree seamed beach and watch the women collect sea weed and the children dig for small shells. You see the men fishing in the traditional outrigger boats.
The next village with a supermarket, post box and lots of souvenier shops is Paje.(30 min along the beach). You will probabely arrive here from Stone Town(airport)after a 50 min.drive in a taxi.(Fare ca.40.000Shilling-us$25)

Left on 07/01/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Crazy Mzungos is a fantastic little beach bar and huts/rooms right on the sand on Bwejuu beach. The wonderful owners, Michelle and Matthew are friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about the area making you feel right at home from the get go and helping you to explore what the island has to offer, or just sit back and relax, as you like. As soon as you arrive you can leave your shoes at the door and live barefoot, beachside and carefree for the rest of your stay. The rooms are simple but spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated, each with a different theme. They are cleaned every day and all have private cold water bathrooms and a little balcony. The bar they have created is also an absolute gem; free wifi for guests, tv showing all the latest sports games/films, innovative and unique cocktails, a fresh, daily changing menu and a stunning spot on the beach to while away the hours. There really is no better place to pull up a sun lounger and relax into the slow Zanzibarian pace of life. A huge thank you to Matthew, Michelle and all of their staff for a truly lovely stay. We will be back and we can't recommend their hospitality highly enough.

From the moment I arrived at Crazy Mzungos I had a brilliant time. It's located right on the beach so I only needed to walk out of my bungalow door to feel the sand between my toes. My bungalow was clean and spacious and I had a great ensuite in there too. The owners were really kind and helpful and Ramson was a brilliant barman who introduced me to the local area and made some great cocktails. The food was amazing and great value and I loved just relaxing on the comfy sun loungers people watching on the beach. It was a really relaxing few days where I felt safe and looked after - I'll definitely be back!

I was immediately made to feel like one of 'the family', such a lovely warm welcome. I felt at home straight away with the accommodation having been so tastefully and carefully decorated, such attention to detail. The view was incredible, white sand and sea. Great to have the bar right there on the beach and with great food too, different varied delicious menu every day. Loved everything about it, definitely going back again soon.

We have stayed at Crazy Mzungo's twice already with friends and family, and will certainly be returning in July with a different group of friends. It ticks lots of boxes for our family. We have the freedom yet the security right on the beach. The last time we had the place to ourselves so felt very private and personal. There is a choice of sunloungers on the beach and comfy sofas in the bar area in the shade. The rooms are spacious and clean with the front door directly onto sand. Leave your shoes in your case as you wont need them. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful, nothing is too much trouble. I would recommend this place for families, couples and single people. A great place to relax and enjoy the view.

Drinks, especially cocktails are good (you must try "crazy juice", it really makes you crazy!!). Servise is good, staff is very friendly and helpful, and Gerard is the best! During our stay here, it was St.Patrick day, and it was really good party. We meet so many nice people (locals and other tourists). Andrej went to snorkel to the reef every day, and I was just relaxing on the beach... With the owners dog, wich is the most lazy dog i ever seen:) We had a really nice time with you guys and we will come back!

We are glad you enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and the friendly local staff. This is a true barefoot holiday for the independent traveler on one of the least commercial beaches in Zanzibar - tranquil and as island life should be.. unspoilt...
The Crazy Mzungo's philosophy is to provide a place where travelers can feel like they are at home, kick off their shoes and chill out under the coconut trees.
Yes, it's no secret that the accommodation is simple and rustic.
Colourful, thatched Swahili style bungalows mere STEPS from the beach..and at U$20-U$25 per person including Breakfast... its really great value!!

We stayed here over New Year and were slightly dissapointed as we wanted to rather be up North where we had heard the party was great for New Years, but it was the best thing that could've happened to us!
Crazy Mzungos was brilliant! The room is basic but clean and right in the sand. There is a brilliant bar/restaurant and the food was delicious every night. We didn't eat anywear else cause the chef prepared really good food. He even asked us what we felt like one evening and then prpared something from the ideas we gave him.
Gerard was so helpful organising our taxi and ferry to stone town and came with us on his day off to ensure we got tickets. It was so great to have such brilliant service! The drinks at Crazy Mzungos are great and the Crazy Juice definately made sure our New Years eve was a night to remember although most of us can't.
On New years eve the guys in the bar were heading to Jambo and said we should join. Best party ever! Its a really chilled bar on the beach about 15 min walk away but they took us in a taxi and took us home when we were ready.
As 6 girls we felt safe the entire time. The beach is also really beautiful and great for kite surfing and long walks as you can really walk for miles.
Will definately recommend it and go back!Response from Vanilla Arches Co. Ltd - 02/19/2012

Friendly and attentive staff in a super location on the beach. The bungalows are simple, but clean and adequate. The dining area and bar attracts visitors who pop in for the atmosphere, rugby on TV and the excellent food on offer from the kitchen.
I found the rate very competitive, standard of food particularly good and inventive. A place run by a Kiwi and an Sa couple - winning combination. I'll go back.
