Cabarete is world-renowned wind-water sports destination with all the charm of a tropical village atmosphere. We're 100 meters from the gorgeous ocean beach across the street, and 10 minutes from the bustle of downtown Cabarete, which provides all the amenities a vacationer looks for - beach sports, souvenir or grocery shopping, bars, dining and night life. Local vendors hawk delicious fresh produce or BBQ chicken and pork from roadside kiosks.

Book a dune buggy excursion, beach horseback riding, jungle or river boat safari, mountain/waterfall rappelling or whale-watching tour from main street vendors. A walk through the Cabarete Caves feels like traveling back in time. Rent a car and explore on your own, to experience the rich diversity that makes up this island nation.

Windsurf lessons or kite-boarding classes and equipment are readily available from beach-side shops with instruction from the local pros in town.

About 50 minutes east of us, is the world class golf course at Playa Grande, designed by Robert Trent Jones - a must see/play for every golfer. Other courses are found at Playa Dorado (30 min west) and closer.

Casinos beckon along the road from Puerta Plata to Cabarete, offering the diversion of modern gaming facilities.
Over a dozen beaches are within 2 hours of us, in either direction, and await your discovery and enjoyment.

Larimar and amber (our local "gemstones") are available at mines along the Touristica Highway through the mountains, or in local gem shops at Puerta Plata, Sosua and Cabarete.

Best place to stay in Cabarete

Left on 04/05/2013 for a stay in July 2011

We've spend a wonderful time there 2 years ago. Looking foreward to come again this year. The owners created a very nice place, clean and with good service. Any question we had they quickly helped. Never forget the relaxing hours in the afternoon with Les' guitarplay.
If you look for a beautiful relaxing place don't doubt to choose this one. Hug to Lynda and Les, we will contact you next week for our next stay.

The communication with them was absolutely perfect, they answered all my questions and got back to me very quickly. The place is very comfortable, very homie and just my experience there was absolutely perfect. Les's Cinnabuns are delicious, you deffinitely need to try them for breakfast.

Like a Home away from Home

Left on 01/04/2013 for a stay in January 2013

After two not so good years staying in hotels and hostels in downtown Cabarete, including the Blue Lagoon and the now awful Laguna Park Hostel, I was looking for a clean, comfortable and budget friendly place to spend my New Year's with a group of friends. I couldn't be happier with Vecinos. Les greeted my friend with an open beer and later we could hear him happily playing acoustic guitar. He made us his delicious flax seed cinnamon buns in the morning and was always available for anything we needed. Five dogs live on the premises and greet you when you arrive from a day at the beach. My friend said it best, "I feel like I'm visiting my family in the DR." There's plenty of room to cook and hang out on the property and the rooms are clean and comfortable. If you're looking for a place to stay that feels more like home than a hotel, this is your place! The only downside is that it's a little far from the downtown area if you don't have a car but the distance also means some of the more unsavory characters of downtown Cabarete aren't lurking outside of your door. If you're considering Laguna Park hostel for a group, definitely come to Vecinos instead!! You and your friends can stay much more comfortably for the same price.

Glad you guys found us for your New Years Eve Party......it always makes it more fun for me when there is a group of younger party people around and I learned a lot more about the Peace Corp. and also what you guys do for the Dominican People....very commendable indeed. I know I don't like cold showers and could appreciate your joy in having hot water with lots of pressure....aaaahhhh...
As we live on the other side of the house it's almost like having family visiting and I always invite people to make themselves at home and borrow and use whatever you need from our kitchen [over the years, because of the Saturday Market, I seemed to have collected every pot, pan, knick knack , and gadget you could possibly need]....
Our next humanitarian group from Canada will be sleeping 23 teenage girls in the same 3 rooms....should be a blast....
Again, it was a pleasure meeting all of you and hope to see more Peace Corp. people next year....Hex, Vida,Bits, Foxy and Cinco d'mio say hi...

      Nice Family Get-Away

Left on 06/25/2012 for a stay in June 2012

We had a wonderful time at Vecinos for a quick family get-away here in the Dominican. The fact that there are only a few condos and it is not right on the beach make for a quiet and relaxing place to stay. We enjoyed our time as a family and found the owners very helpful and friendly. The room had a loft that the kids loved and a full kitchen which is an important amenity. We enjoyed the pool area also with lots of trees. It was what we were looking for - quiet, family-friendly and relaxing. We will definitely return.

Humberto and family were great guests and came back for another night a few days after their first stay.

We were happy to see them enjoy the charcoal BBQ and pool - where the whole family laughed + played for hours.

We want them to know they're more than welcome to come back and stay with us again anytime, and look forward to them coming back next time :)
Wishing them all the best, Les + Lynda

We were so happy Sarah and friends found our vacation rental online and chose it for their "respite getaway" in Cabarete.
It was wonderful to hear about their humanitarian work (teaching Dominican women skills to earn their own livings) and be able to offer them a break from the rustic village living with a "taste of home".

They said how much they appreciated having unlimited hot water again. They'd come directly from the campo - where a rainy spell had resulted in very muddy conditions, so they'd been unable to do their laundry there.
They really appreciated the use of our common clothes washer and dryer - as well as the landscaped gardens and clean concrete pathways - where it all stays clean, and you can walk in the rain without getting muddy.

Two girls were having birthdays, so Sarah baked a birthday cake to celebrate and left some for us to enjoy - yummm! thx for sharing that tasty treat :)

We really enjoyed watching them have fun in the pool and shopping trips to town. It's always such a joy to have guests who appreciate our place and maximize their time with us - rain or shine.

We applaud their hard work, and welcome them to return and stay with us again anytime - and all their friends too!
We wish them all the best and look forward to hosting them again on a future vacation - all the best! Les + Lynda + pets :)

Vecino's in Cabarete: A Healing Retreat

Left on 10/26/2011 for a stay in July 2011

Being in a wheelchair I was nervous about coming to the Dominican Republic for the first time, but owners Les and Lynda Lehman immediately put me at ease with heir conscientious and caring attitude.
It turned out that Vecino's was the perfect place for my sojourn, a healing retreat on a lushly landscaped acre. I was able to get around with minimal assistance, and whenever I needed help it was immediately available.

Stephan was a wonderful guest who stayed with us for several months and didn't let his disability slow him down too much.

He hired a local helper who pushed him across the street to watch the evening sunsets over the ocean.

He also pushed him to town along the front street to take advantage of all the conveniences available there.

It was wonderful to hear him tell us how healing he found the "green light" filtering through the lush tropical foliage.
He spent happy hours floating in the pool and working on regaining his strength to walk again.

We were happy to learn that the condo works well for a wheelchair guest, and see how well he was able to get around.

We appreciate his offer to email future wheelchair guests and share his experiences here with them to help them decide whether our place is a good fit for their needs.

We wish him all the best and welcome him to return again anytime!
Looking forward to having you back again on a future stay, Stephan - take care.....Les + Lynda

      One vacation never to forget

Left on 08/25/2011 for a stay in August 2011

Thank you Les and Lynda for the wonderful time we had at Vecinos. We loved the peaceful, relaxed environment, the flora and fauna. We had a great apartment with plenty of space for the five of us. We all enjoyed being outside and enjoyed the pool for hours. It felt like we had a private pool since we were practically the only ones using it during the day. Where can you find a pool for yourself and no difficulties finding a lounge chair either? We should not forget to mention how awesome it was being able to pick fruit from your trees and enjoying fresh local fruits when we wanted. Les, thank you also for the exciting adventures you took us on. The children still talk about riding on the jeep with the wind going through their hair. We definitely recommend Vecinos to anyone interested in a peaceful and quiet environment and will return.

Owner Response: The best part of running Vecinos is the great variety of people we meet + your family was especially fun. I remember you arrived right in the middle of Saturday Market but made yourselves at home right away. Thanks to lax driving rules, you can still put 4 or 5 people in the back of a jeep + drive down the highway while standing in the back. My tours are definitely not touristy. It's great to see an adventurous family that enjoys bouncing down some potholed secondary roads to find an out of the way, true Dominican bar, that just happens to have a small stream running next to it where you can climb the muddy banks + drop 10 feet into the river......I think the biggest kid in the water was your husband...showing your sons how to flail their legs in a water fight ...something I'd never seen but he used to do it growing up in the DR. I'm not sure how impressed your kids were when the locals started cooking an enormous cauldron of sancocho [Excellent Dominican soup]...+ they saw several chickens which had just been relieved of their heads..you just don't get see that in New York...haha.. Living in Cabarete, Lynda + I don't get to see much of OUR grandkids, so it's a treat for us to hear kids [+ adults] splashing, laughing, + playing in the pool. As we only rent 4 condos, even if we're full, our pool feels like your own. Since you were here I've completed the second water feature which is a cascading 20' waterfall behind the pool which goes well with the three pools connected by the babbling brook we added last year. Glad you enjoyed the bananas, guavas, + chinola that were ready, as well as the coconuts that Sammy picked + opened for you...there's nothing like fresh coconut water right off the tree. You did miss avocado season, which began this week + it's "raining" aquacates so there'll be lots of guacamole for awhile..... I'm sure all the pets miss you too. I'm always surprised how many people seem to bond with the cats + 2 dogs...(actually 3 now) as we found a 6 wk old starving perrita that someone must have thrown into our yard a week back. Now we have Vida, Muerte, + Bitsi [like ITBIS]...translation - Life, Death, + Taxes! I still haven't found where the naked neck chicken is laying her eggs but I'm sure we'll see a clutch of them come out shortly. Several pairs of lovebirds continue to sit on eggs but so far there are no new babies. Thanks again for the excellent review . Pleasure to meet you and your family - come back + see us again, anytime.

Dave was a wonderful guest who made full use of our relaxing and tranquil setting to catch up on some reading and "recharge his batteries".

He told us he was happy he'd accomplished exactly what he'd set out to do when he came. He'd seen how we spent Christmas + New Years and was able to "decompress" from his work in our serene surroundings.

He was a great addition to our little community of expats, and regaled us with his amusing stories + insightful observations. He spent many "happy hours" across the street at the conveneint restaurant called "Martini's"

He told us he hopes to return soon, possibly in spring.
We all missed him when his 6 wks were over, and he's welcome back anytime!
