Believe or not, the house is so nice!

Left on 02/27/2013 for a stay in February 2013

Our recent trip to Cairns, Australia was fabulous. About 15 years ago, we visited Gold Coast which was another wonderful trip. The difference was we had an independent house in Cairns and we stayed in a hotel in Gold Coast.

We make it a sort of rule to enjoy overseas trip at least once a year. Our basic way is to stay at one place for a week or two at a condominium or an independent house, because we just want to feel how people there enjoy their lives. We so far visited condominiums and independent houses in Boston, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Los angles, London and Bath.

I would say the holiday house in Cairns was the best one among all the accommodations we experienced so far. The house is beautifully maintained both inside and outside, neat and comfortable for a long stay. My wife and I flew from Osaka, Japan, and our son's family, his wife and three daughters, flew from Tokyo, and 7 of us enjoyed the stay very much. Our son's family are still thinking that they would like to settle down there if possible.

Usually we have to read the manual to use the house. But this time, it was our first experience that the owner of the house, Nick, came and saw us when we arrived there and gave us proper instructions to use the house, which made us feel relaxed. The friendly chattering with Nick and Lizzie was our another nice memory in Cairns, which will last for many years to come.

Open BBQ area, facing to the large backyard Port Douglas Beach

      Best holiday home in Cairns

Left on 01/14/2013 for a stay in December 2012

Christmas in cairns - What could be better? There's hot & really hot, but my Christmas holiday couldn't have been more enjoyable thanks to the holiday home Lizzie and Nick Marshall have set up.If you're looking for a comfortable home-away-from-home than you can't go past the Wilks holiday house in Bungalow, Cairns. Sure, it's close to the city and all the great shopping just like the advertising says, but the Wilks Home offers that little bit extra I really didn't count on.Lizzie has thought of every detail for you. It's like I packed my bags up and put them down in my own home.Bored, then read a book there's a great selection, play a board game, get on the internet or watch a video - everything is provided. The kitchen is fully stocked (I cooked several meals there and didn't need extra dishes or knives like I've done in the past). There's even an esky (which really came in handy visiting friends). I loved the house the moment I walked in - it really made me feel like home. Lots to do in Cairns, but if all you want to do is sit then grab a glass of wine & head for either the front or back garden of the Wilks house, quite, lovely feeling of serenity.
Thanks again Lizzie and Nick, the family really enjoyed it, can't wait to visit again.

What a fantastic 2 week holiday!

Left on 09/09/2012 for a stay in August 2012

My family of 7 stayed in this house for 2 weeks in august, 2012. It has everything that you need for a really enjoyable stay. It was spotlessly clean and tidy and there was plenty of space for everyone. Lizzie thought of everything in the kitchen and it was just like being at home. A lovely T.V. room for the children and space to play in a safe back garden. A great location just 5 minutes drive from the city centre but off the main road so not noisy at all. The house just felt welcoming from the minute I stepped through the door so I would definately recommend this place to anyone considering a self catering stay in Cairns - plenty of choice for supermarkets and shopping centres within easy distance and loads of places to visit. Thanks to Lizzie for attention to detail and making this such a good holiday.

A Comfortable Business Stay at Wilks House

Left on 05/28/2012 for a stay in March 2012

Wilks House in Cairns is an older, comfortable, Queensland style home. Our family of 5 stayed in this house for 2 ½ weeks on one of our work trips, and found it to be pleasant and well catered for. Lizzie greeted us on our arrival at 8pm. She showed us the house and the groceries that she had purchased for us (as previously arranged), then left us to settle in. Courtesies such as supplying groceries were a pleasant surprise and we found both Nick and Lizzie were very accommodating and helpful.
Unfortunately we arrived at a time when Cairns was experiencing highly unusual flooding and the back patio and downstairs area was flooded through on our second day. The downstairs bedroom also smelt a bit damp but we put that down to the rain and dispelled the smell by lighting a few candles. Both Nick and Lizzie were highly apologetic over this all and arrived early the following day to set about cleaning up the mess.
The house itself is large enough with 3 bedrooms upstairs and the aforesaid 1 downstairs. There are nicely kept wood floors, quality linen and excellent pillows on all the beds. A small en-suite completes the main bedroom. There is also a large 2nd bathroom, a small but very well stocked kitchen, lounge room, and also a rumpus/TV room downstairs. This is not modern house, but has all the modern conveniences such as 4 televisions and air conditioners throughout.
Wilks house is in a busy-ish suburbia type area; very close to the city centre and only a few minutes walk from a large shopping centre. Buses also run frequently from the main road situated close by.
It would be nice if the house was screened as the mozzies were fierce (due to the rain?) and we had to keep the windows closed, but as the house was air conditioned this was not an inconvenience. Wilks House was a very nice, home-away-from-home and that Nick and Lizzie were a very pleasant couple. We would be happy to use this house again on future business trips.

      Nick & Lizzie Marshall

      Dear Paul and Naomi,

Thank you very much for your kind words in the review. Unfortunately, during your stay, Cairns was subjected to the wettest period in 70 years which brought all sorts of problems. Major flooding occurred in many parts of Cairns including Wilks Street. Luckily the house, being on stumps, was above the flood which did put an inch of water through the patio area. The lower bedroom, although it did not flood, did suffer from a damp smell for a few days. The conditions were perfect for mosquitos. The house used to have screens but because of the outward facing traditional casement windows, the screens had to be on the inside. They were damaged so often by guests that we removed them and provided mosquito nets for beds instead. It does mean that all windows have to be closed to escape mosquitos during the wet season. We did not think this would be a problem because the windows are closed anyway for the air-conditioning which is used extensively at this time of year. We also supply mosquito coils and several plug-in mosquito zappers.
The one thing which was disappointing was that despite saying that you would be happy to return for business trips, you would not recommend the house for your friends.
It may not be the most obvious holiday home because it does not have a swimming pool and it is not on one of Cairns beaches. However, we offer this home because we found there was a demand for a house that was close to the city centre. All the daytrips to the Great Barrier Reef depart from the Reef Terminal adjacent to the city centre. All of the cinemas, the theatres and most of the restaurants are in the city area. A taxi from the beaches is $50-$70 each way, which is an expensive overhead for a restaurant visit without a designated driver. Being in a city suburb may not be everyone’s idea of holiday accommodation but for many, it is what they want. Wilks St guests are split about 60% holiday renters and 40% business people.
Thank you for taking the time to write this review and we hope you will stay again.
      Best wishes, Nick and Lizzie

      Wilks House is absolutely Fantastic!!!

Left on 03/18/2012 for a stay in February 2012

If you are looking for a wonderful "like home" accommodation while on holiday in beautiful Cairns, look no further! This place is located within a quick drive to all the places people want to visit when they are here. The owners of this home, Nick and Lizzie, have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable and worry free. You can even bring your family dog, which we did!

We were greeted by Lizzie upon our arrival and welcomed with fruit, biscuits and all the amenities one could need. Want to go to the beach for a picnic? There are beach towels & a picnic basket available (complete with dishes!). Want to know what to do in Cairns? There is a huge basket full of brochures, magazines, maps etc. giving you tons of information! There is even a sewing kit at hand if your button comes loose! Like we said, Nick and Lizzie have thought of everything!

We would definitely recommend The Wilks House to anyone coming to Cairns!

We have just returned from spending 10 days at Wilks House in Cairns. We were a family of four adults and three children. We found the house to be fabulous, very homely, very clean. Nice and close to shopping centres, transport and Cairns city itself and local attractions are easily accessible from here. A home from home. Lizzie and Nick are most hospitable, making your stay even more enjoyable. Can't say enough about how great our stay was. Try it for yourself!!!

Nick & Lizzie were flexible with early/late check in/out. Very helpful with local knowledge of the area and services to suit us with young children. The home slept 9 of us comfortably and allowed us to use the carport to accommodate our parents in the caravan. The house was superbly clean with all the facilities and smaller comforts need for a weeks stay. ie. dishwashing liquid, washing pwdr, toilet paper, soap, glad wrap & mosquito coils. Wireless internet, pay tv, dvds & videos for kids and adults, large garden to play footy in and pitch up tent for the kids. Shaded areas to relax outside. Aircon & fans for comfort, BBQ and gas available for use. The nicely decorated 4 bedrooms suited our coupled families with/out children the rumpus room was a delightful bonus. We were all very comfortable staying at the Wilks St House with plently of living areas so we weren't stepping over each other. The 2 bathrooms/toilets were suffice.

The location of the Wilks St House was near enough to Cairns itself, it has all our needs close by. 2 large shopping centers, banks & fuel stations are of within the immediate vacinity. Even the bottle shop is within 2 min walking distance from the house.

Nick & Lizzie were immensely courteous and generous with assisting our needs and requirements. Correspondence via email was prompt which is always appreciated.

We really can't fault anything with this accommodation or whilst our stay at this house.

Thanks again for an enjoyable stay!

      Nice but old and dated

Left on 09/03/2011 for a stay in October 2010

The house was really well equiped. It is a nice house for a family stay but I was a bit put off by the musty damp smell in the wardrobe and the room situated outside of the main house also smelt musty and damp so we didn't use that room. The main sitting room and kitchen was nice and there was free wifi although we were asked not to use it too much. There is a strict clean up policy when leaving there. We had to make sure everything was perfect before we left or they employ a cleaner which comes out of your deposit which is a bit unfair. We were hoovering and polishing, cleaning bathrooms etc the night before we left and I do feel that guests should not have to be forced to do that.

Although I thought it was a bit over priced it was okay. I dont have any real fond memories of our stay there. Maybe a more modern house / apartment would have suited us better.

I was dismayed to read that you did not enjoy your stay at Wilks, Helen, as there was no mention of any problems when we arrived to say goodbye on the 1st Oct. 2010.
We do have a cleaning policy which is clearly outlined in our terms and conditions of rental which are sent out to each enquiry before a booking is made. A guide to the departure clean is also in the house folder, but it does NOT ask guests to hoover, polish or clean bathrooms. We do ask that the fridge is cleared of opened foodstuffs, bins emptied to the main garbage bin, dishes washed and replaced in the cupboards, which is standard procedure in Holiday Homes throughout Australia. Many homes charge an exit cleaning fee, which we do not as we have always thought guests would prefer not to have this cost.
Broadband internet is provided at the house as a free service for all guests. We only ever ask for fair use, in that if someone uses it to download movies, the allowance will be used up and the next guest gets a slower service.
We apologise if there was a musty smell in the downstairs bedroom. This can be a problem in the tropics when a house is not constantly in use. It is easily overcome by opening the door and turning on the fan to air the room. The bed in this room had been slept in, so we had no idea there was a problem. We feel that at under $36 per person per night for 6 guests which is what you paid, this home is good value for money, given the space, very well equipped kitchen, internet, satellite TV, free phone for local calls, and large gardens. However this is subjective and we respect your opinion and are sorry that you found it overpriced.
The house is certainly old ( a timber Queenslander of around 50 years) but it is not "dated". It has new modern bathrooms, a new kitchen and is comfortably furnished with lots of extras to give that feeling of home. We are very disappointed that the house was so obviously unsuitable for you, as we want all our guests to leave having good memories of their stay.
Yours sincerely, Nick and Lizzie Marshall.

Nothing but the best at Wilks House

Left on 06/24/2010 for a stay in June 2010

Our stay at Wilks House was so wonderful that we didn't want to leave! Owners Nick and Lizzie clearly care for the house and provided great service!

Upon entering Wilks House, we were met by Lizzie, who was there to give us the keys (at 9pm!) and show us around. The first thing we noticed were the beautiful hardwood floors! Lizzie showed us around the house and made sure we knew how to use everything before she left. She even recommended dentists to us, as my uncle had cracked his tooth.

The house itself is stunning and provided plenty of space for our four adults and two teenagers. The bedrooms are all spacious with comfortable beds and great storage! The bathrooms were of a good size, attractive and very clean! Out the back door is a nice covered porch/patio with a nice dining set. The porch connects the main house to a lovely fourth bedroom and a bonus rumpus room, a great place for the younger ones to hang out. Through the covered porch was a beautifully landscaped and well-maintained yard! The front yard was just as wonderful, with palms providing privacy. It was heavenly to sit out there in the morning before starting each day!

Lizzie and Nick had provided everything we might need -- linens, information on local restaurants, dive operators, rainforest tours, etc.. They had even supplied us with some basics in the pantry and refrigerator -- bread, milk, eggs, juice, etc.

The house is very conveniently located to the CBD, but in a location that we felt more like residents than tourists. It was wonderful to come home at night, be able to spread out and relax, do our laundry and be able to access the internet and a large range of television channels!

They really have thought of everything there at Wilks House!

Left on 09/01/2009 for a stay in August 2009

We were in Cairns to attend a sporting event. 4
teenagers and 3 adults. The house was perfect for
location (close to all major shops, the sporting
venue and restaurants), size and entertaining with
the team. The house had all the amenities we
required, was extremely well presented and very
clean. The Managers "Cairns holiday homes" were very
accommodating with check in/out times. We would have
no hesitation in recommending this holiday home and
would have no hesitation in booking this home again.

A very enjoyable stay in a clean, well equipped house and good l

We recieved excellent service which started with a prompt response to our e-mail and continued throughout our holiday. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised by Wilks St which exceeded our expectations in space and layout. In particular we loved the 'games' room which was a great place for the children to hang out and call their own. The kitchen was very well equipped and there was a great selection of videos and DVD's to choose from which catered for the whole family. We found the location to be good with a shopping mall just down the road and a good selection of resturants and takeaways close by.

Thank you Nick and Lizzie for a wonderful stay. If we are back in Cairns you will definitely be hearing from us!

Great functional clean and well maintained property

Left on 07/11/2009 for a stay in July 2009

Three of us shared the delightful Wilks Street property in Cairns. For a
tourist it was a great location. Very clean, beautifully set out, spacious and
lovingly kept. The kitchen contained everything we needed and there was
plenty of space for everyone. This property would be great for a large
family or two small families to share. There are televisions, toys, videos,
books and a lovely garden space. It is near to the Stocklands shopping
centre and a main road that goes into Cairns. It is not in a tourist area,
rather a residential/commercial area so it is quiet and still very close to
town. One needs a car if they are to stay in this area, but that could be said
generally for any worthwhile holiday in Cairns as things are quite distant
one from the other and a car (or a lot of tourist tours) is really a neccesity.
We came up on business and found this location perfect. The manager was
helpful and very pleasant to deal with.
I would definitely stay there again on business or pleasure and totally
intend to bring my family up to share that property.

Extremely Comfortable, Warm and Cosy Living Experience

Left on 06/26/2009 for a stay in June 2009

We were a family of 10 ranging from ages 9 to 75 who spent several nights in Wilks House.

All of us were very plesantly surprised to find the home so comfortable for the entire group. Wilks House has a very warm and cosy homely feel.

All rooms including bedrooms, living room and bath room are tastefully furnished with eye to every detail. Kitchen is well equipped and there are full dish washing, clothes washing and drying facilities. There was a play room for children with toys and tv and cd players to watch movies.

The gardens were immaculately groomed. There were fresh fruit trees which excited the kids and senior citizens very much.

Our hosts - Nick and Lizzie Marshall - went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable. They even offered to get groceries for us prior to our stay ! They were at the House to greet us and show us around. They also kindly treated us to fresh organic oranges and bananas which grew in the gardens of the House.

On our departure they were around to bid farewell and return our deposit money in cash!

We would Highly Recommend Wilks House to any family looking for homely warm and cosy accomodation in Cairns. Lizzie and Nick Marshall shall ensure a very comfortable stay for any guests.

      Peace and service

The facilities are good and the owners are determined to make your stay great. We had a party of a couple and three elderly ladies. We fitted in well and there was every convenience - internet access, Austar, good air conditioning in a quiet cul de sac reasonably close to facilities.

We enjoyed our stay an dhope to get the chance to return
