ManchesterA fabulous week
Left on 03/03/2013 for a stay in January 2013
My wife, parents and I had a fabulous weeks stay at Letter Steading. For us the location was perfect. The Loch and the surrounding hills certainly exceeding expectations. The house itself was a high quality and very comfortable. After some cold trips out, the house and its wood burning stove were a welcome sight. All the facilities in the house were excellent and there isn't much more i can say about this. For us the location was also very quiet, which was perfect for a week of relaxation, reading, walking and photography Jan and Gordon made us feel extremely welcome and we very much enjoyed the trip out in the truck up the hill at the back of the house to enjoy he view from up high.
All in all the week was excellent, so much so that we have already booked for next year. We are just hoping that we can book some snow as wellResponse from JAN and GORDON YOUNG - 03/14/2013

Thanks for the lovely review! We are so pleased you enjoyed your week with us and we look forward to welcoming you back next year....have requested snow but sadly the powers that be won't guarantee!!

Thank you Jan and Gordon - we had a fantastic break over Christmas and New Year. Cottage was very comfortable and welcoming, and the Loch is very beautiful (in all weathers!) Ideal place to relax and unwind, even the Highland cows were friendly. Highlights included Gordon's trip into the hills, hot chocolate in the wendy house with snow falling and watching 'Woody' the woodpecker every day in the garden. Jan and Gordon made us very welcome from the moment we arrived, including bread, eggs and Christmas lights / decorations - they are excellent hosts. While the cottage does not have internet or mobile signal, this greatly added to the experience. However we were offered the use of Jan's internet if we needed to (we didn't).

We had a wonderful time at Letter Steading, even the weather held out for us on a few days! Letter Steading itself is extremely comfortable, very well equipped and located in a lovely tranquil setting. Jan and Gordon have done a fabulous job and the Wendy house is a lovely extra pleasure, to sit with a glass of wine and watch the sun go down is amazing. Our hosts are very welcoming and really helped make our stay even better, our trip "up the high road" with Gordon and Charlie provided amazing views and a bit of an experience for our pooch Dougie, he'd never been in a pickup truck before :)
Thank you for sharing your lovely cottage with us Jan, Gordon and Charlie, we all had a fabulous time and hope to be back soon.Response from JAN and GORDON YOUNG - 10/26/2012

Thanks so much for our lovely review!! Gordon is so pleased when someone mentions the Wendy house as he worked so hard on it and he loves seeing it used to its full potential!! Glad you enjoyed your holiday with us and see you soon. Charlie says woof to Dougie!

Thanks Danny and Cheryl for a lovely review!!
And can we take this opportunity to thank all our other guests who have taken the time to review our cottage and leave such positive responses. We are so lucky to live at Loch Katrine, and it is a pleasure to share our good fortune with others, and to show them the beauty of the Trossachs National Park.

Left on 08/09/2012 for a stay in April 2012
My partner Rona and I,have been to Letter Steading three times.Twice for long week end, once for a week and hope to return soon.
To go to Letter Steading you have to use a private road.As soon you pass the barrier,at the pier, you enter a beautiful and peaceful world.Loch Katrine. The 2 miles to your accommodation follow the side of the Loch.At every turn the view is different, as is the light
Once you arrive at the Steading you will meet two great hosts.Jan and Gordon. The warm bread, cook by Jan, will be waiting with 6 eggs from the free range hens (who have developed a taste for spaghettis.)
As you walk in the cottage you know your stay will be very confortable.Compact with everything you need .Two bedrooms with double bed.A central room with kitchen fully equipped, cooker, fridge, microwave, dishwasher, pots pans cutlery( and view on the birds feeders),opening on the dinning room/lounge,with a long sofa in front of the TV and DVD.The centre piece is the wood burning fire.Heat the place very quickly. The wood is free, and easily collected from the back of the house.
Gordon also build a Wendy house, 20 metres away, with a small stove to keep you warm. You can sit read your book, watch a movie on your iPad,or just watch the changing climate on the hills sipping at your malt whisky.
On your first visit Gordon will take you up the view point,if you say I sent you, with Charley the dog and you will see a breath taking view of Loch Katrine.
If you like walking or just reflect this is the place. No mobil phone, no internet, paradise.(If you really need it Jan,Gordon can provide it)But with the car, you are never far away of a place of interest.
Go and enjoy.I know I do.

This beautifully appointed cottage is hidden away on the shore of Loch Katrine, away from any crowds , on a private road with next to no traffic . It is nevertheless , close to local towns & eating places etc making it a wonderful holiday location . Jan & Gordon are lovely hosts , the 4 X 4 trip up the hill to view the sunset was very special . We have already booked our next visit .

West LothianQuiet Cottage with lovely views.
Left on 07/22/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Very quiet cottage in lovely area. The cottage is next to the owners own accomodation. There is ample heating, there is both electric heating and a log burning fire with ample logs supplied.
We had two people (our husbands) with dementia in our party, one of them got up and accidently during the night put on the outside light. We did not notice this, however the owner came over the following morning and complained, we tried to explain about the dementia but he was not nice about it and said that the light shone in their bedroom and they liked it dark as they were not used to light during the night. Obviously we had not intended to leave the light on and had the owner just told us about it we would have been on the lookout for this happening. Because of this both men were terrified that they would put the wrong light on during the night as we were also, my friend and I both found it harder to sleep in case the light was once again accidently switched on. My friend decided to speak to the wife about this and she said also about being used to the dark. She then mentioned the small note above the light switch stating the light was to be switched of during the night. If only our husbands still had the ability to read. I can only hope that they never find themselves in the same position as my friend and I. After this happened we felt that the cottage was just too close to the owners and that we could no longer relax and enjoy ourselves. We go several holidays a year and have never been made to feel like this before.
The shops are over 13 miles away and if you intend to cook meals and either take food with you or pre order a delivery from asda, Tesco etc please note the only freezer capacity is the small part of a fridge. Also make sure delivery drivers know to enter from the Calander end at Loch Katrine and that they know the barrier number to get onto the small private loch road that leads up to the cottage.
There is only 1 bath and 1 hand towel supplied in the week per guest and as there is no tumble drier it could be difficult to get them dry in wet weather.
The beds are clean and comfortable. The rooms are small but nicely furnished.
The kitchen is attractive but small, the cutlery is stored in the cupboard under the sink beside the cleaning materials.
The owners leave homemade bread, free range eggs, milk, marmalade, a few teabags and some coffee. This is a nice touch and they sell their bread at a reasonable price.
This cottage would be great for people who want to walk or cycle, I think foriegn visitors would love it but you do need transport.
There are lots of midges and protection is needed.
Because of the problem with the outside light we could not recommend this cottage to anyone with dementia or learning difficulties in case they broke one of the rules.
I think the owners worry that their property will be misused, We are sure they thought we would damage their property.Response from JAN and GORDON YOUNG - 08/06/2012
Owner
Gordon and I are somewhat saddened at some of the comments in this review; the first negative part of which seems to stem from what we felt was a simple and pleasant request to turn off an outside light which had been left on all night and the following morning. As cottage owners we always try to help guests out if they have any requests – as we did when asked if we had a disabled shower stool. This was immediately sourced from a friend. One of the husbands on one occasion wandered into our house on his own and he was gently assisted back to the cottage, so we certainly do not feel we were unsympathetic to their situation. We would have been more than happy to have provided extra towels had we been asked. There is a heated towel rail in the bathroom, and the facility to hang washing in our lovely Wendy House in inclement weather.
We have worked very hard to attain our 4 star grading from VisitScotland, and always hope that our guests are happy with both the condition and the cleanliness of the cottage on their arrival. On that note we do ask that dog owners do not let their animals onto the furniture or leave them on their own in the premises, especially as some of our guests are not pet owners. It appeared one day that the guest's dogs had been left alone since they were spotted climbing over the sofa and barking at the window. When I spoke with them on their return from a shopping trip I was told that one of the husbands had stayed in the cottage with the dogs. We can only assume that their comment regarding damage stemmed from this incident.
With regard to their Asda home shopping order it was unfortunate that the delivery van broke down and their order was not delivered on time. Every effort was made to help in this instance (by our friend Annie who welcomed them to the cottage as we were away until the following day) with numerous phone calls and an offer to supply food for the first night. Annie remembers telling the guests that there was extra freezer/fridge space available as there is another fridge and a large freezer nearby for guests’ use. Instruction notes regarding delivery by online shopping companies to Letter Steading are explicit in our final confirmation letter and in general the delivery goes without a hitch!
As can be seen from our excellent reviews here on Flipkey, and from the many positive testimonials both on our website and in our cottage guest book, we try our very best to ensure all our guests have a good holiday. We are generally on hand to help out with local information and needs, but are equally happy to leave guests well alone if they prefer.
We are sure it cannot be easy dealing with relatives who suffer from dementia, particularly in a new environment. Indeed I had this exact conversation with the two ladies concerned prior to their departure and at that time there appeared to be no bad feeling from them with regards to their stay.
We are upset that these guests did not have the perfect time that they expected at our cottage, and hope they have many satisfactory trips away in the future.

If you are looking for privacy and peace for a place to wind down it does not come much better. There is a long history to the area and the loch that has brought travellers from all over the world. If you go on the Sir Walter Scott and take in the views most would think how great it would be to stay on the banks of the loch. Well you can at Letter Steading which has been carefully restored to provide a very comfortable residence. The owners have made a good use of space concentrating on a well serviced living area. The rooms are a little tight but still comfortable. The outside seating in late July could be improved by positioning at the gable end overlooking the loch.
Response from JAN and GORDON YOUNG - 10/18/2010
Owner
Thanks for your review on Letter Steading. Regarding the outside seating we positioned the rear table and chairs on the flat gravelled surface near to the back door and the barbeque, and this still gives a lovely view of the loch. The grassed area at the gable end is sloping and it would be difficult to put the table there. As an alternative there is a smaller table and chairs at the front of the cottage that takes in the evening sun and the view to the loch. We aso have an area further over in the rear garden which is set out as a camp fire which again has great views to the loch and the surrounding hills. But we've taken on your suggestion and will put a bench seat against the gable end!

Not very often I give excellent for every aspect but it was so good that we booked to go again in September 2010 and immediately booked for 2011. The cottage has been renovated to a high standard and the scenery is splendid. Ideally situated on the banks of Loch Katrine with a private road leading to it. The accommodation has everything you need plus more. There is lots to do in the surrounding areas or just chill outside the cottage with a view to die for.
The owners (Jan & Gordon) were very helpful and always on hand to assist if required. I would thoroughly recommend this cottage to anyone who wants the choice of peace and tranquility or adventure.
