One of Camps Bay’s original homes, Shell Cottage has been totally revamped into a stylish four bedroom holiday house whilst still retaining its simple, beach-style character.
One of the best things about Shell Cottage is its incredible location. Camps Bay beachfront is very close; less than a 200m stroll from the front door down a palm lined walkway. Despite being so close to the buzz, the cottage suffers no noise due to its secluded panhandle location off The Drive, a quiet residential road.
From the moment you come in through the front gate and meander along the boardwalks into the large, lush and shady garden, surrounded by v...iews of the Twelve Apostles and Lions Head mountains, you feel as though you have entered a haven. Floating timber decks lead you through the lushest garden imaginable filled with hibiscus, lavender and all sorts of flowers and scents. The property is very different from many of the ultra-modern steel, glass and concrete homes on the Atlantic Seaboard, and it offers a lovely sense of space and peace.
The property is spacious and airy and it enjoys a wonderful flow from outside to inside. The lounge opens up completely onto the generous patio and pool deck, which overlooks the garden. Each of the bedrooms is unique and stylishly designed, and all open either onto the garden or onto private courtyards. Each of the en-suite bathrooms has its own unique theme, with an emphasis on nature - sand textures, pebbles, mother-of-pearl, driftwood.
This is a home that has been created with a lot of care and attention to detail, giving it real soul. Despite its beach cottage feel, this home is equipped to the highest standards and it offers the international traveller all that he or she might want in a self catering property, including wireless internet access and satellite television.
The local tennis courts and play park are across the road, and within a few minutes’ walk you have access to in excess of 25 restaurants, a number of bars, a library, shops, and all the other amenities that Camps Bay offers.
Shell Cottage is a holiday house that appeals to all ages. Its single level and enclosed garden suits families with young children or the elderly but its stylish design and great location, just behind the trendy sunset strip and the beach’s great surf break, make it a dream holiday location for a group of friends.
Treat yourself to a wonderful stay at this beautiful beach cottage, in Cape Town’s favourite beach suburb of Camps Bay.
Off street parking under cover for 2 cars, alarm system including garden beams, well lit at night, video entryphone, good security due to the Bay Hotel security across the road.
Airy room opening out completely onto the verandah via oversized folding stacking doors, as well as two shuttered vintage windows on either side of the open fireplace to let in the afternoon sunshine.
Furnished with a contemporary L-shaped white leather couch, oversized down-filled cushions, white African tables, good lighting and original art. Fitted sisal flooring and heavy white linen curtains add to the style and comfort. Plasma TV with surround sound, DVD player, iPod dock, unlimited wireless internet access.
Situated in a ‘turret’ with 5 metre ceilings and skylights bringing light into the centre of the cottage, the dining room has a white 10 seater table with contemporary chairs and original timber floors.
Opening onto the garden via sliding doors, with the same shuttered window as in the lounge which can be safely left wide open at night due to the ornate wrought iron grille. Queen size bed, small couch and two Phillippe Starck ‘Ghost’ chairs. Separate dressing area with contemporary sandblasted glass sliding wardrobes, all with hemp carpeting.
Light and spacious en suite bathroom with huge skylight, shower, bath, basin and toilet.
This bedroom is a similar size to the main bedroom and also opens onto the garden. It has a queen size mahogany Sleigh Bed, two easy chairs and an open en suite bathroom with a bath, separate shower, double basin and separate toilet.
Accessed off the dining room, this bedroom opens onto its own private and protected outdoor courtyard with gravel, bougainvillea and two teak chairs via glass doors. There is a queen sized bed and an open en suite bathroom with a shower and basin, and a separate toilet. Another vintage shuttered window with wrought iron grille adds to the ambience.
A small but quaint room with a queen sized bed, separated by a screen wall from the light and airy bathroom looking into the rose garden with a bath, basin and separate toilet. It opens onto a little courtyard with a screened outdoor shower.
A cottage style kitchen has everything open and visible on white painted timber shelving units for ease of use. The main kitchen has a stylish Smeg fridge/freezer, antique leather armchair and kelim on the woodblock floor. Appliances include a ceramic glass hob, microwave and oven. The separate tea and coffee area with glass kettle and espresso machine is found through a doorway, beyond which is a small laundry with washing machine and tumble drier, opening onto a drying yard.
A verandah leads off the lounge, on the edge of which is a 7x3m charcoal coloured pool. Beyond the pool lies the lush and private garden, with a small pond with goldfish, small fountain and a Buddah statue. A secluded corner under the trees is the perfect place for afternoon naps.
British family with local connections

Superb compact cottage with excellent layout of accommodation and easy access to wonderful local facilities (beach, restaurants, etc). Great support from owner and management team. Lack of sea view more than compensated for by mountain view, garden and privacy. Open access to pool requires careful supervision of children who cannot swim! Read more
Shell Cottage is a magnificent property and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We do however need to mention that the swimming pool does have a pool net, as a previous guest had mentioned that having one would be beneficial when traveling with young children. We totally agreed and the owner had a very safe one custom made.
The property very much welcomes children and we do what we can to make sure everyone is able to relax on their vacation

Living in angola, our stay in Shell Cottage 'nest' was indeed a peaceful relief for all the family. Designed as a vacation property, with really stylish decoration, very well equiped, we enjoyed a memorable stay there and will certainly return. All the comments over this place are not overstated. The Nox (namely Matthew and Osman) provided a Top of the Class service. Read more
We will pass on the great compliments to Matt and Oz! So pleased you enjoyed Shell Cottage and we look forward to your return!

Highlight :Well maintained house in prime spot. Easy access to shops and the beach. Love the fact that we had Internet, full DsTV, washer, dryer, great support from the NOX guys - Matthew, Ozzie and Chris. Guys were readily available and resolved any issues promptly. Excellent customer service and very professional.

Lowlight: could do with a pool cover as a safety feature for people traveling with kids. Under 2 year olds can easily open the low handle on the patio door (my daughter is 20months old and could do this) Read more
Great point on the pool net!! This will be raised with the owner and hopefully we won't have any more 20 month olds in stealth mode cleverly gaining access to the garden!! In all seriousness, we agree with you and hope we can add this feature for future guests!
Will report back to the team about their hard work! We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and hope to welcome you back again soon

Shell Cottage was a good fit for 3 couples and one single. We loved how close it was to the restaurants and beach, but so nice to get away to a quiet spot with the most spectacular backyard oasis, that smelled of jasmine. Each bedroom has a great feel with access to the outdoors. We had a little anxiety figuring out security system, it was the back window by the laundry that was open. Electric outlets are touchy and in inconvenient spots but that is typical of South africa. Cape Town truly one of the most spectacular places on earth and Shell Cottage is a nice base, especially when you come home from your day adventure and don't want to drive to dinner. Only suggestion is change out the pool for a hot-tub. Service was excellent, don't worry, they will be there for you if needed. Read more
Thank you for such a wonderful, refreshing and honest review! We love Shell Cottage and your description of it is spot on! Thank you for highlighting location benefits!
Your suggestion of a hot tub is completely understandable and also not a first time suggestion ;) however... I doubt there will be any changes to the pool heat any time soon.
We do hope you return to a Nox property soonest

Sweet little house but could do with a good clean
Left on 11/22/2012 for a stay in November 2012 | JodyA
Really sweet little house in a beautiful garden. We stayed for 13 nights whilst doing a shoot in Cape Town. Was lovely to stay somewhere more cosey and homely rather than one of the usual "bling" villas. Great situation too. Whilst no view it is one block back from the beach and the restaurants along the main drag in Camps Bay.
Negatives though over shadowed our stay a bit which was a shame as when working I could have done without the daily call to the rental agent to have a moan - alarm didn't work when we first arrived though Nox told us that didn't matter (insurance won't pay out if an alarm is fitted but not working !), we asked to have the pool cleaned (didn't use it in the end though as was too cold,) sound on the TV didn't work until 3 days before we left, cleaner didn't seem to clean, she just made beds, towels didn't get changed whole time we were there, one door was always found unlocked when we returned, plug broke on the bath so water wasn't drained out for a couple of days and then ended up not using it for fear it happened again, mushrooms growing out of one of the showers and despite being pointed out they remained for 3 days !
I would stay here again but the house needs a good top to bottom scrub and then someone to keep on top of it. Nox did finally get a company in to clean the day before we left. Read more
Thank you for your thorough review on Shell Cottage. You are completely correct in saying that it is well located, really is within walking distance!
As to the cleaning:
It's always a fine line between a servicing team being completely invasive and then not being 'clean enough'. We make sure that the servicing girls are always mindful, respecting our guest's privacy and need for space. That said, you should have had a towel change and mold in the shower is not acceptable.
As to the items not working during your stay (TV and broken plug) we have requested the entire TV unit be replaced seeing as despite us having repaired this it does seem to be a repeated challenge. We apologize for the inconvenience, this should not happen.
As to the plug: Our property managers do not seem aware of this, however have been sent into re-evaluate.
Thank you again for your detailed breakdown and we will make every effort to ensure that the matters are tended to,
We hope to be able to welcome you back to a Nox property again in the not too distant future.
Eva and Team Nox
A very comfortable cottage with lovely garden
Left on 11/08/2012 for a stay in October 2012 | Steve
The cottage was very comfortable with two good sized and two reasonable sized bedrooms. The service was good without being intrusive. There were some things wrong when we arrived, which perhaps should have been sorted out prior to arrival, such as a lamp not working in the toilet of the most left-hand bedroom (looking from the garden) which had clearly been out of action for some time. The safe had to be replaced and was only done on the 3rd day and the replacement washing machine arrived on the 3rd day but could not be fitted.
The lounge was very tastefully decorated and the furniture was very comfortable. Unfortunately the weather was never good enough to open up the whole lounge onto the garden terrace.
Overall it was very pleasant and a nice change from all the modern, somewhat minimalist apartments and houses that I have rented in the past. Read more
Lovely to have you stay with us again Steve! and thank you for the good feedback - we try to make sure that the servicing girls are mindful of our guest's privacy, so I am happy to hear that this worked out well.
As to the items requiring replacement, I am glad that overall everything was seen to in the end and hope that it wasn't too much of an inconvenience.
Shell Cottage is a lovely treat , as our guests often don't know what to expect when they arrive. It's very well hidden really. Its a personal favourite as it's ever so peaceful.
Hope to see you again soon Steve
All the best from Cape Town!

A great place to stay in Camps Bay, close to the beach and main street but tucked away private and quiet. Nicely furnished with everything you need for a holiday away.
