Washington DC, District of ColumbiaA gem in Umbria.
Left on 11/24/2012 for a stay in October 2012
La Fattoria del Gelso is a gem in Umbria. The house is very simple but absolutely welcoming and comfortable. But what matters more than the house is the people who run the house. Suzy and Bill Menard are dedicated to Umbria and to providing their guests an exquisite experience. And they do that. All of the meals, whether inhouse or at area restaurants were perfect. This included the absolutely wonderful breakfasts and the incomparable dinners. And the tours that are offered -- in assisi, Citerna, Montefalco, Perugia, and elsewhere -- as well at the various outings to vineyards, and forests filled with truffles, and linen looms make a week at La Fattoria absolutely wonderful. I cannot think of a better more exciting way to spend a week in Umbria than at La Fattoria.

Bethesda, MarylandA wonderful week in the heart of Umbria with ideal accommodation
Left on 11/15/2012 for a stay in October 2012
I stayed at La Fattoria Del Gelso for a week during one the owner's Food and Wine Tours. The best part of the trip was meeting all the friends Suzy and Bill Menard have made. Many of them are merchants that they represent in their shop in Bethesda, MD called Bella Italia. If you are renting the house for a week on your own, their staff members Wendy and Marco can help with all the arrangements for touring the area. They are jewels.
The villa is very comfortable and has many personal touches made by the owners. They have made it their home away from home. Relaxing in front of the fire after a busy day touring is delightful. The town is in walking distance and very near a major road system that can carry you easily on day trips throughout the heart of Umbria.
I highly recommend a stay at La Fattoria Del Gelso! -

Left on 11/13/2012 for a stay in October 2012
We stayed a wk with Suzy and Bill along with 4 other friends for a total of 6 in 4 bedrooms. there are many other bedrooms. all comfy and welcoming. no tvs in room but, there is a designated guest tv/internet lounge with sofas and desk. for our pre-paid, all-inclusive wk we got all meals including some in local restaurants. all the food was excellent. they've got some masterful cooks on hand. the location is handy ... within 20 mins drive to assisi and other smaller towns like spello and bevagna. perugia is about 50 mins. every day was organized in advance with olive press tours, vineyard, weaving mill and truffle hunt being some of the highlites. all perfectly interesting and entertaining.

This was like being at home away from home. Our hosts, Bill and Suzy Menard, and their fabulous staff, anticipated our every desire. The rooms are comfortable, the food superb, the public rooms cozy and inviting. And, a great central location for touring Umbria.

The week at villa was perfect in every way. We saw places and met people in the heart of beautiful Umbria that we could never have access to. The owners, Bill and Suzy, shared their villa, the wonderful staff and friends of the region and we all felt very much at home. The week was a perfect mix of learning the history, hands-on cooking - complete with painting pottery in Deruta with a master and seeing grapes harvested for wine at a beautiful vineyard. In short, it was a dream come true, The villa was beautiful, spacious, comfortable and spotless and we ate like kings and queens-- and were well taken care of. We all learned so much about Italian history and culture in one week. Anyone would love this special place and I am so grateful that we found it.

Cleveland, Ohio, United StatesBeautiful lodging, unbelievably friendly hosts, gorgeous country
Left on 09/20/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Wendy and Marco (our co-hosts and tour guides) were extraordinarily accommodating, friendly, and low-key while also remaining organized and efficient. The food was fabulous, the villa was spacious and luxurious (a pool? A game room? Bicycles free for use? An industrial-sized kitchen?), and the surrounding country-side was beautiful. I enjoyed everything from the welcome dinner to long bikes on the country-side to the tour of assisi to the truffle hunt to the trip to the local winery. I would absolutely return, and will be singing the praises of Bill and Suzy to anyone thinking of traveling in that area.

"La Fattoria del Gelso" is a perfect place for a group of several families. You have comfortable rooms, a large kitchen, a nice backyard, and a swimming pool. Besides the villa itself, we enjoyed a lot of activities nearby, like a truffle hunting followed by a delicious truffle tasting menu and unforgettable visits to assisi and Perugia (very good guides by the way). I learned a lot from the cooking class with the chef Simon who owns a restaurant in the nearby village. The villa staff Wendy and Marco are always ready to help.

Plantation, Florida, United StatesPerfect location, perfect property, knowledgeable friendly helpf
Left on 09/02/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We came as a group of extended family and friends, eight of us in all. The property could easily have accomodated more. We enjoyed our time gathering in the large comfortable living room - giving all a chance share daily experiences and hook into wifi. The staff, Marco and Wendy, were both able to help connect us to the best guides and experiential outings, including wineries and restaurants. Truffle hunting and cooking class were just 2 really off the chart experiences .
The most unexpected bonus was the vegetable garden that we were encouraged to take advantage of - eating some of the freshest and most delicious produce of the trip.
Cannaro is a small sleepy village that is 20 minutes from everything that you would want to see in Umbria and also provides easy gateway to Tuscany. This was the first time that we rented a car in Europe and although we made our far share of wrong turns, these did not detract from the fun!
We were there during a summer heat wave and the large pool was a great treat after a hot day of sightseeing. Each room has a fan though there is no central a/c.
Breakfast prepared by Maria Pia was a delicious way to start the day and we really appreciated that she was able to accommodate special dietary requirements. She is a master of expresso. -

I had the good fortune to spend 5 days at
Fattoria del Gelso with one of my oldest and dearest
friends. It was truly one of the most relaxing
vacations that I have ever had. We took long walks
and bike rides in the glorious countryside. We
revived our sore muscles in the villa's beautiful
pool. We cooked yummy vegetarian meals in the
fully stocked commercial kitchen. We slept soundly
under cosy comforters in the cool Umbrian nights.
We wandered along the charming streets of
Cannara, Bevagna, Montefalco, Assisi, and Spello.
And we never had to worry about anything because
Marco and Wendy were always available to help us,
make arrangements and give recommendations. I
can't wait to go back. Thanks Suzy and Bill! -

Syracuse, New YorkWe had to come back again after an incredible visit in 2010!
Left on 12/09/2011 for a stay in October 2011
After falling in love with Umbria and the villa during Bill and Suzy's Food and Wine Tour in Fall 2010, we had to come back the following year. The villa is beautiful beyond words and it is as comfortable as home. The staff [Wendy and Marco] are welcoming, knowledgeable , friendly and capable of making any imaginable arrangements you might need. Bill and Suzy have forged many wonderful relationships so that you get to experience Umbria intimately with local artisans that produce wine, olive oil, truffles, artwork, cheese, etc as well as local chefs. It is great to know that these experiences are available whether you are part of the Food and Wine Tour or if you rent the villa on your own.
The Food and Wine tour was an incredible way to truly learn about and enjoy Umbria and what it has to offer... every day was an exciting adventure. The food and the wine were fantastic... we experienced Umbrian hospitality at its best... it is a magical place...and Bill and Suzy make it even more special... they are wonderful hosts...
We came to Cannara as strangers, but we left as friends... We would recommend this vacation to anyone... can't wait to return again!
