HISTORY OF FOUNDING Fifty years after Columbus discovered America, Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sighted the white sands and green pines of Carmel. Two centuries later, in 1771, Father Junipero Serra established Mission San Carlos de Borromeo on a knoll overlooking the Carmel Bay—the jewel and the heartbreak of his ministry. In the early 1900s, the village of Carmel began its growth around an eclectic group of young artists, writers and intellectuals.

Coastal fog is prevalent during the summer.

Rental cars are available. Amtrak and Greyhound bus stations are also nearby.
RESTAURANTS More than 60 coffee houses, bakeries, pubs, bistros and exceptional restaurants, highlight dining in Carmel. These establishments serve a bounty of international and regional cuisines — utilizing fresh produce grown locally in the fertile Salinas Valley, and fresh seafood from the azure waters of Monterey Bay. Monterey County is also home to more than 75 wineries, many of which offer daily tastings of wines produced with varietal grapes grown on 45,000 acres of vineyards.
GALLERIES Carmel has been a mecca for artists, writers and musicians since the turn of the last century. Today, more than 100 art studios, galleries and antique stores represent the works of master artists, both local and from around the world.
SHOPPING Carmel boasts four exceptional shopping venues: The neighborhood of quaint shops, antique stores, boutiques and galleries centered on Ocean Avenue in town; The Carmel Plaza, also on Ocean Avenue; as well as The Barnyard Shopping Village and the Crossroads Shopping Center, both located at the mouth of the Carmel Valley.
FESTIVALS Each year, thousands of visitors are drawn to the diversity of art, drama, music and literary events designed to promote Carmel's celebrated cultural contributions and traditions. Some of the most popular events include: the annual Carmel Art Festival, the annual Carmel Bach Festival, and the Carmel Shakespeare Festival featuring performances at the Outdoor Forest Theater and the Golden Bough Theater.
RECREATION Visitors can enjoy the charm of downtown Carmel's charm and the natural beauty of California's central coast while engaging in a variety of outdoor activities, including horseback riding; jogging, walking and bicycling along coastal bluffs; and fishing, kayaking, surfing or SCUBA diving off Monastery Beach. If you want a man-made excitement, we have art galleries galore, excellent fine-art museums, local theater, outstanding restaurants, boutiques, a natural history and a childrens museum, a world-class aquarium, and that's just for starters. History buffs will have a field day exploring the adobes of Monterey. There's so much to do that you cannot possibly do it all in one visit, which means you will just have to come back again and again!

I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful accomodations and they thought of everything including plenty of coverings if you have a dog with you. The place was bright and airy and close to the beach and the grocery store and restaurants. This is a heavenly visit and I will be back soon! Only thing I would add is to include a fan when it gets a bit too warm and you need some air moving. Besides that, perfect!

We spent two weeks in this beautiful cottage and found that it offered everything we needed and more!
The cottage is spacious and filled with light from the fabulous windows and sky lights. Not only is it beautifully decorated, but it is clean and filled with comfortable furnishings, especially the bed which was just divine!
Located back from the street it was quiet, peaceful and private, and the small patio was secure enough for our dogs to relax in when they weren't enjoying everything that Carmel had to offer...long walks, playing on the beach and eating out in many of the doggy friendly restaurants in town!
This rental really had it all, they even provided everything from picnic baskets to beachchairs for a day at the beach.
We would highly recommend it!

This is a charming neighborhood, quiet, long time residents, warm climate, one of the most beautiful in Camel area. The house was completely private and very quiet, wonderful to have available to travelers with pets; sliding door to lovely garden allowed for indoor/outdoor feel, morning coffee, and was great access to outdoors for elderly dogs who can't negotiate stairs.Decor was beautifully relaxing, well thought out and very comfortable. Wonderful beach house decor but nice, not rustic or neutral to account for travelers. We felt as if we were special guests, respected and trusted. This is not just a place to stay which allows dogs. This is a very special gift to yourself, an elevated experience.

I am never alone, my life is big and loud; it takes a lot of energy.
To rest, I must remove myself from my environment, my week in Carmel was a little slice of heaven. I was so very cozy and comfy in my little cottage back off the street, quite, peaceful.
I slept when I needed, cooked some great meals in the kitchen, took long walks, practiced yoga and found ways to constantly entertain myself. -

We had a fabulous getaway during Spring Break. With 2 adults, 2 children and a small dog, the Mesa Guest House was a perfect place for us to spend time relaxing and unwinding after all the fun activities of our days. The place is beautifully decorated, very clean and has everything you could need to cook a gourmet meal if you so desire. We will definitely look forward to staying there again in the future!

We loved this place, Sanctuary vacations in general. They are all consistent in design. Most important for us - it was clean, white, fresh. We don't have many vacation days but when we get another chance for a few days off, we'll go back to Carmel just because it was clean, quiet and in good location.
They take good care of all properties. -

I cannot begin to describe the joy and relaxation my girls and I felt when we arrived. The house was so cute and comfortable, it really was a home away from home. The beautiful view of the ocean from the backyard deck made for easy picnics and leaving the home completely unnecessary. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to share in the beauty that is Carmel.

We have stayed in many places when visiting Carmel & the Mesa guest
cottage is our favorite. It's so bright & airy & comfy. The kitchen
is very well equipped & there's a great little patio where you can sit
& eat & enjoy a glass of wine. Also great for our dogs. My husband
loved the memory foam top bed & now wants one! We will definitely
be returning soon. -

The guest house is sunny, charming, clean, well appointed, and has a grill on the outside patio. The rental agency is professional, considerate, and helpful. I felt as though they really cared about my stay with them. The location is a beautiful residential neighborhood with a short drive or doable walk to the beach. I like that I felt comfortable, special, and cared for.

Left on 01/25/2012 for a stay in September 2011
This studio apartment is very cozy with everything you need for a few days in Carmel. Kitchen had plenty of utensils, glasses, pots and pans. We went to Monterey Farmer's Market and bought enough food to cook a few meals. Bed was comfortable. Loved the little outdoor patio. Good use of space - perfect for two people. Apartment on residential street very close to Carmel Mission Valley Inn and downtown Carmel (just over one mile). Loved the passes to the Monterey Bay aquarium - could skip the lines and not have to pay. My only complaint is we had to pay a non-refundable cleaning fee, but they also had very strict requirements (with financial penalties) about cleaning before you left.

We normally stay in a "Pet Friendly" hotel when we visit this was our first time renting a cottage. After this trip we will never stay in a hotel again. The cottage was amazing it was so cozy, and had everything we needed. We were so surprised to find every cooking utensil we needed to cook our meals. We loved having the enclosed yard for the dogs. We loved everything. Best trip ever we didn't have to worry about anything.

Very, very clean and fresh! Nice touch with the wine, cheese, aquarium, and day spa passes! Lush and light, rich textures in soothing colors. Greatest use of small space, never felt cramped even with our 2 aussie dogs! The kitchen was well appointed and I loved the patio with grill! Everything was perfect for our anniversary get-away.

We had a wonderful time staying at the Sanctuary by the Sea. It was located in a quiet neighborhood and was a cute, clean, and very comfy place to stay. We enjoyed cooking dinner in the stocked kitchen and enjoying the weather on the patio. Close to downtown Carmel and Monterrey and the aquarium passes and wine tasting coupons were a great bonus. Would recommend this to anyone who is going to be in the area.

I found the guest cottage to be just as pictured. It had everything I needed for an easy, relaxed, comfortable stay. The feeling was serene, quiet, private and well located for my excursions into Carmel and Big Sur.
A tiny suggestion: The one closet was full (except for hanging space) so i could not fully unpack and put away suitcases. Not a reason not to visit- just an observation. I hope to return soon! -

This place was so relaxing and comfortable. Light filled room from the north facing windows and skylights made this good sized studio bright and airy even when overcast. The bed was comfortable and the decor provided the seaside feel. The kitchen has all that is needed to eat in and the small enclosed patio was cozy and convenient for our two small dogs. This house has two beautiful pine tress soaring above. The only downside is the location requires driving into town or the beach, but in exchange it is perfect quiet and darkness at night. Very dog friendly for friendly well behaved dogs.
