HISTORY OF FOUNDING Fifty years after Columbus discovered America, Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sighted the white sands and green pines of Carmel. Two centuries later, in 1771, Father Junipero Serra established Mission San Carlos de Borromeo on a knoll overlooking the Carmel Bay—the jewel and the heartbreak of his ministry. In the early 1900s, the village of Carmel began its growth around an eclectic group of young artists, writers and intellectuals.

Coastal fog is prevalent during the summer.

Rental cars are available. Amtrak and Greyhound bus stations are also nearby.
RESTAURANTS More than 60 coffee houses, bakeries, pubs, bistros and exceptional restaurants, highlight dining in Carmel. These establishments serve a bounty of international and regional cuisines — utilizing fresh produce grown locally in the fertile Salinas Valley, and fresh seafood from the azure waters of Monterey Bay. Monterey County is also home to more than 75 wineries, many of which offer daily tastings of wines produced with varietal grapes grown on 45,000 acres of vineyards.
GALLERIES Carmel has been a mecca for artists, writers and musicians since the turn of the last century. Today, more than 100 art studios, galleries and antique stores represent the works of master artists, both local and from around the world.
SHOPPING Carmel boasts four exceptional shopping venues: The neighborhood of quaint shops, antique stores, boutiques and galleries centered on Ocean Avenue in town; The Carmel Plaza, also on Ocean Avenue; as well as The Barnyard Shopping Village and the Crossroads Shopping Center, both located at the mouth of the Carmel Valley.
FESTIVALS Each year, thousands of visitors are drawn to the diversity of art, drama, music and literary events designed to promote Carmel's celebrated cultural contributions and traditions. Some of the most popular events include: the annual Carmel Art Festival, the annual Carmel Bach Festival, and the Carmel Shakespeare Festival featuring performances at the Outdoor Forest Theater and the Golden Bough Theater.
RECREATION Visitors can enjoy the charm of downtown Carmel's charm and the natural beauty of California's central coast while engaging in a variety of outdoor activities, including horseback riding; jogging, walking and bicycling along coastal bluffs; and fishing, kayaking, surfing or SCUBA diving off Monastery Beach. If you want a man-made excitement, we have art galleries galore, excellent fine-art museums, local theater, outstanding restaurants, boutiques, a natural history and a childrens museum, a world-class aquarium, and that's just for starters. History buffs will have a field day exploring the adobes of Monterey. There's so much to do that you cannot possibly do it all in one visit, which means you will just have to come back again and again!

Within this area are world class golf courses, such as the Pebble Beach Golf Links, The Links at Spanish Bay and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. Also to be seen is one of California's most photographed trees, the Lone Cypress. Many vantage stops are on the 17 mile drive with vistas that make you just gasp in awe.
In nearby Monterey:
Few places on earth can live up to their own mythology, but Monterey is a notable exception. No matter what you’ve heard or seen in feature films, nothing can prepare you for the jaw-dropping beauty along Monterey's fabled coast and village-like pedestrian thoroughfares. John Steinbeck was a frequent visitor, and drew considerable inspiration from area landmarks including Cannery Row, which he helped to immortalize in his novel of the same name. Today, restaurants, boutiques and attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium have helped make Monterey a favorite destination for visitors from around the world.

Left on 12/02/2011 for a stay in November 2011
Rented this place for the week over Thanksgiving & found the location was ideal! It (like many places in the area) was very small but we did fine. A few improvements would have been greatly appreciated; towels were very old & thin, bathtub dripped & looked like it was beginning to erode the tub surface, shower curtain support mounted too high & tying some ribbon between curtain & hook would quickly solve this, blankets for twin bed would be great, no bucket or directions for recyling found, ovens needed a good scrubbing & couch was so broken down as to be uncomfortable to sit on. Located short walk to bay, longer walk to Monterey & very easy walk to good restaurant at top of 19th street.

I stayed the cottage which has one bedroom, open kitchen and sitting area. The house was fully furnished with design and it is located in Carmel. You can quickly walk from the hustle and bustle of the the town to the tranquil countryside. It is very close to the famous Carmel town and the countryside is even more beautiful.

Rio Vista, CARelaxing!
Left on 10/20/2011 for a stay in October 2011
We've been renting vacation homes since the late 1980's, but this was, by far, the best rental. Easiest check-in, with wine and cheese, greeting us, as we walked in the door. The house was spotless and there were plenty of supplies(toilet paper, soap, pillows, blankets, etc.). Great children's drawer with games and books, and we really enjoyed the aquarium passes! Super fun and relaxing vacation! Thanks, Sanctuary Vacation Rentals!
