    Additional Location Information

LOCATION Situated on the Carmel Bay in Central California on the southern bend of the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel-by-the-Sea is 120 miles south of San Francisco, 350 miles north of Los Angeles and 26 miles north of Big Sur.

POPULATION 4,038 according to the 2006 census.

HISTORY OF FOUNDING Fifty years after Columbus discovered America, Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sighted the white sands and green pines of Carmel. Two centuries later, in 1771, Father Junipero Serra established Mission San Carlos de Borromeo on a knoll overlooking the Carmel Bay—the jewel and the heartbreak of his ministry. In the early 1900s, the village of Carmel began its growth around an eclectic group of young artists, writers and intellectuals.

CLIMATE Carmel enjoys moderately warm temperatures year round, with an average high of 65° F and an average low of 48° F. September and October (Indian Summer) offer the best weather of the year, with an average high of 72° F. Average rainfall, primarily between November and April, is 15 inches. Coastal fog is prevalent during the summer.

TRANSPORTATION United, American, Delta, and America West offer direct flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City out of the Monterey Airport, which is 10 minutes from downtown Carmel. Rental cars are available. Amtrak and Greyhound bus stations are also nearby.

RESTAURANTS More than 60 coffee houses, bakeries, pubs, bistros and exceptional restaurants, highlight dining in Carmel. These establishments serve a bounty of international and regional cuisines — utilizing fresh produce grown locally in the fertile Salinas Valley, and fresh seafood from the azure waters of Monterey Bay. Monterey County is also home to more than 75 wineries, many of which offer daily tastings of wines produced with varietal grapes grown on 45,000 acres of vineyards.

GALLERIES Carmel has been a mecca for artists, writers and musicians since the turn of the last century. Today, more than 100 art studios, galleries and antique stores represent the works of master artists, both local and from around the world.

SHOPPING Carmel boasts four exceptional shopping venues: The neighborhood of quaint shops, antique stores, boutiques and galleries centered on Ocean Avenue in town; The Carmel Plaza, also on Ocean Avenue; as well as The Barnyard Shopping Village and the Crossroads Shopping Center, both located at the mouth of the Carmel Valley.

FESTIVALS Each year, thousands of visitors are drawn to the diversity of art, drama, music and literary events designed to promote Carmel's celebrated cultural contributions and traditions. Some of the most popular events include: the annual Carmel Art Festival, the annual Carmel Bach Festival, and the Carmel Shakespeare Festival featuring performances at the Outdoor Forest Theater and the Golden Bough Theater.

RECREATION Visitors can enjoy the charm of downtown Carmel's charm and the natural beauty of California's central coast while engaging in a variety of outdoor activities, including horseback riding; jogging, walking and bicycling along coastal bluffs; and fishing, kayaking, surfing or SCUBA diving off Monastery Beach. Several renowned golf courses and tennis clubs are also located nearby.

The Monterey Peninsula is unique in its combination of breathtaking natural resources and a multiplicity of cultural and entertainment possibilities. You can find something for every possible taste. For nature lovers, there is the diversity of mountain and sea, for picnicking, surfing, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, beach-combing, bird-watching, kayaking, scuba diving, tide-pooling, biking and more. If you want a man-made excitement, we have art galleries galore, excellent fine-art museums, local theater, outstanding restaurants, boutiques, a natural history and a childrens museum, a world-class aquarium, and that's just for starters. History buffs will have a field day exploring the adobes of Monterey. There's so much to do that you cannot possibly do it all in one visit, which means you will just have to come back again and again!

      Convenient

Left on 10/31/2012 for a stay in October 2012

This property is located in a quiet residential area south of downtown Carmel. The house is very well appointed, including the "little things" like beach chairs and a picnic basket. It has a large, private "garden" deck and hot tub. 2-3 minutes from grocery shopping and only about 5 - 7 minutes from Carmel's art galleries and restaurants. Highly recommended.

We loved the house and the awesome backyard with the hot tub. The house was cute, clean and comfortable. We really appreciated the bath towels, linens, and other items that some other vacation rentals require you to bring. The beach toys, chairs and other beach amenities were great. Perfect location, close to the beach, town, Pt. Lobos and Monterey. The extras--such as the tickets to the aquarium--really provided extra value to our trip.

We made a last minute trip to Monterey and Carmel. We were able to book this home for our extended weekend stay. It was more than we expected and were so very pleased with the home, all of its amenities and the welcome that we received. Special touches including a bottle of wine, crackers and cheese. We really dislike staying in hotels and prefer to stay in vaction homes like this one. The value was certainly there and gave us opportunity to get to know the area. Its location is minutes from everything, shopping, the beach, dining, grocery stores, and wonderful place to take a stroll. We surely will return and recommend to all our friends for their stays.

      Beautiful Stay

Left on 04/12/2012 for a stay in March 2012

The house we stayed at was absolutely wonderful! We came in early spring when it was still a bit chilly, so the hot tub and fireplace were perfect. Having a concierge on hand made all the difference in our stay from finding a driver for wine tours or getting passes to the spa. They even left us a welcoming present when we arrived of wine and cheese! The price was very reasonable and the location of the house made us feel more like locals than tourists. I think we enjoyed staying home with the ocean view just as much as we had enjoying the pleasures of Carmel and Monterey!

Left on 02/23/2012 for a stay in February 2012

This was a great place for a long weekend getaway. Spacious backyard for the dogs and within easy driving distance of beaches and town. Super clean and well maintained. The bed in the master is not the most comfortable and the mattress could use replacing and the living room furniture was not the most comfortable for long lounging in front of the lovely wood fire but in the summer I am sure this would be less of an issue as the backyard could be better utilized. The only other thing is be aware that the 10am checkout rule is strictly enforced! We got a loud bang on our door at 10:05am and were pretty rudely informed that the cleaners needed access asap!

This was a very nice place to stay for my elderly father , dog, and I. I was able to walk to the beach and back twice a day and it was beautiful. It was close enough and yet felt very private. My dog loved the yard. The home was clean and very easy to use.

Well appointed with a full service kitchen, appealingly decorated, clean and well organized, enclosed yard. Lovely distant view of Carmel River beach and reserve. Close to Mission Carmel, less than 2 miles to the Carmel Beach, close to shopping center, ten minutes or less to Point Lobos, Pacific Grove, Monterey, and downtown Carmel. We liked best the ready access to all areas, the quiet neighborhood, the hot tub, attention to detail in supplies and decor, and the pet friendliness. We did have an annoying problem with horse flies hatching in the heat vents, but did not tell owner til we left.

      Beautiful, gracious accomodations...

Left on 11/30/2011 for a stay in November 2011

As anyone who has ever rented a vacation home in Carmel knows, rentals are very expensive and are usually poorly maintained, dated and lacking in many amenities.
This was absolutely not the case at the lovely cottages we rented from Sanctuary Vacation rentals in early November.
The main house and guest house were both charming and very well appointed. In addition, I found the staff and owner to be very gracious, accommodating and responsive to our needs.
      I would recommend them unequivicably.

We actually came a day early, due to the stress of the week before our arrival--which could have been a disaster, but the very efficient and agreeable staff made up the house for us while we ate dinner in town. When we got back, everything was in order, and the hot tub we took, followed by wine and cheese provided by the house, were wonderfully calming. The house itself is lovely, clean, charming, with very comfortable beds, and a kitchen that is a pleasure to cook in. It would be a great pleasure to return to Sanctuary Mesa.

Thanks so much for your wonderful comments. I am sorry that there was any misunderstanding that the cottage guest house is a 600 square foot studio or can be a large master suite with a living room so it all depends on how you use it. Either way I would think it would be a positive as there is a living room in the main house as well as in the guest cottage.
We always try to accommodate early check in and late checkouts when we don't have a guest arriving that day and even then will say come over and pick up the aquarium passes and we will call you when the house is clean. I hope it you return you ask to get a late check out and that it works out for you. Take are, Annee
