Additional Location Information
THE ESTATE OF VILLA ARCENO: The Tenuta set in the south side of the Chianti is a vast area (1000 hectares) of forest, vineyards, olive groves, cypress avenues, dotted with traditional farmhouses “the Casali”, some of which are enigmatic, romantic ruins awaiting restoration.
The “Villa” (Manor House) of the estate dates from the 16th century along with its own chapel, a romantic park and lake. From the Villa the original owners would have managed the estate directing the farmhands and peasants who were housed in the Casali along with various farm animals.
Il Poggio was once a working Casale but is now restored with modern benefits, it now houses those who wish to relax and enjoy the stunning views of the Chianti countryside.
AROUNDABOUTS: From Il Poggio there are views towards the famous Crete (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and beyond towards Monte Amiata. To the rear of the Casale lies the medieval walled village of San Gusmè, a short 15 minute walk through the vines where, if one pleases may have a drink at the village café and admire panoramic views in almost all directions to Siena and its Torre del Mangia. All areas of the estate are reached by “strade bianche”, literally “white roads” which are unpaved. Although used by the public these roads are quiet, allowing walking, cycling and jogging at one’s own pace. The surrounding region is stuffed with history, art, food and wine. Siena, with its famous “Palio” an exciting adrenaline fueled horse race (2nd July and 16th August) is only 15 minutes away. With Italy’s excellent road network, Florence, San Giminiano, le Crete, Pienza, Montalcino, Cortona and Arezzo are with easy reach for day trips. In the other direction Umbria with Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio and Todi.

SingaporeAmazing - just what we needed
Left on 11/13/2012 for a stay in September 2012
It is the second time we have stayed at this lovely villa Il Poggio and we can't wait to return. The villa was everything as described on the web site and even more than shown. It is so easy to settle in to this house, like moving from home to home. It presents high quality and comfortable furniture and is perfectly equipped. Even the Wifi was working very efficiently in spite of being in the middle of the Chianti countryside.
The whole villa was spotless upon our arrival nothing was missing and everything in perfect order. Catherine warmly welcomed us and helped us to settle in quite easily. The welcome food and wine basket was lovely and allowed us to get started after a long travel (from Japan) without the need to rush to the shops straight away.
The correspondence with anna the owner before our stay has been very helpful, smooth and efficient.
During our stay, the grounds and pool were kept very tidy and clean. There you can relax, lounge around the pool, take fantastic walks along the white roads of the extensive estate of arceno, enjoy the scenery and its breathtaking views and stop by at the arceno vine estate for a taste of their wine.
Even at 32C degrees, our stay was comfortable and nights cooled down by the ceiling fans. There are so many wonderful places to visit, from Siena to Florence and arezzo and all the lovely walled villages in between.
The location is close to San Gusme and Villa a Sesta, quaint Tuscan villages, with some of the most outstanding restaurants around.
All of the recommended restaurants that we tried, we found friendly and providing high quality food. Our favourite, although not the cheapest, is La Bottega del Trenta in Villa a Sesta, the highlight of our Italian food and wine tasting tour.
We would most certainly recommend Il Poggio to anyone wishing for a quality and luxury rental property in Tuscany (although we would like to keep this secret to ourselves).
