Once the residence of a noble family, the villa is situated in a 60 acre estate in hills amidst the Apuane Alps National Park 5 minutes away from the market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagana near Lucca. This beautiful villa has recently been restored to its original grandeur adding luxury bathrooms and other modern comforts. The estate is 5 minutes away from the medieval town of Castelnuovo di Garfagana near Lucca. The city represents the centre of this beautiful area well-known for its mountains, lakes, valleys, grottos, hikes and excellent food. A few minutes away by car are other medieval towns and attractions, the best known being Barga. The exclusive seaside resorts of Forte dei Marmi and nearby Viareggio, Massa and Carrara are 50 minutes away by car . These are approached through a spectacular panorama with views across the mountains and into the valleys below. The port of Livorno is 90 minutes away with ferries to all the islands.
You can enjoy trekking, cycling, horse riding, golf, bowling, trail bike riding, and many other activities locally.
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana holds a street market every Thursday. There are also numerous special 'festas' throughout the year to celebrate different aspects of life in the Garfagnana region of Tuscany including chestnuts, mushrooms, Carnival, music (opera, classical, modern), and much more. The recently restored Teatro Alfieri is a treasure. The fort dominating the town is a must see. There are many great bars and restaurants both in the town and in the surrounding area.
The nearest airport is Pisa with many direct flights from UK with Ryanair, Easyjet, BA and others and from most other European countries. The villa is just over 1 hour's drive from the airport. Excellent train services are also available from the airport to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana.

The charming English, German and Italian speaking owner is present at a separate residence on the estate to manage your requirements and organise any services you require.
Prices include:
- Fresh spring water (throught the estate)

- There is an additional charge for central heating of €40 per day.
- Additional cleaning is available at €8 per hour.
- Cooking and any other services are available upon request.

We had a wonderful 2 weeks at Villa Bertagni. It was the perfect family reunion for us from australia and our inlaws from the UK. We were blessed with terrific weather and spent the majority of our time lazing around by the pool, exploring the local shops and eateries, and having many family barbecues in the balmy evenings. Dieter our host was sensational, with wonderful recommendations, making restaurant bookings, assisting with train timetables, etc. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.

We were made very welcome when we arrived and were shown round. The Villa has to be seen to be believed, an interesting house just outside Castelnuovo, and sympathetically restored and improved, with private pool, and extensive grounds. Castelnuovo is a historic town, worth exploring itself, but also within easy reach of Lucca, Pisa, Florence, and Bagni di Lucca (hot springs), all of which we visited. Viareggio and other coast towns also within reach, with miles of golden sand. In the other direction we found a drive up into the mountains was well worth it.
Bearing in mind this was a self-catering holiday the only downside was the smallness of the Kitchen, but then there is also a bar-b-que.
But in Italy who needs home cooked food?
All this and Italian food and wine and friendly hospitality, well worth it.

The villa Bertagni is a lovely, sumptuous, luxurious place for a holiday. I stayed there with my grown up family towards the end of July. The weather was perfect, the swimming pool heavenly, the location blissfully quiet. It`s beautiful, we all loved it and wallowed in its luxury and comfort. The villa is wihin easy reach of the sea,e.g Forte Del Marmi The scenery is spectacular. The ancient town of Castelnuove is very near and has all the amenities needed, - restaurants, shops, a wonderful market, music and theatre.
Niki Steinke was endlessly helpful,cheerful and charming. No-one could have done more to ensure that our stay was trouble free. It was a pleasure to meet her and to deal with her. We look forward to repeating the experience
