Left on 05/08/2013 for a stay in April 2013
Location was absolutely stunning! Beautiful views in a peaceful location. I can't imagine a more relaxing place to stay. The apartment itself was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Everything I needed for the kitchen was available for use. The grounds are immaculate, and perfect for lounging outside and relaxing with a book, or just taking in the view. Location was easily accessible and directions provided by the owner were clear and easy to follow. Local ammenities were a short drive away, and within a couple hours there were so many day trips to take, I easily could have spent a few weeks here!
The owner and his property manager were helpful and responsive. I have already recommended this place to all of my friends as "the place" to stay if they travel to Italy, and will definitely return again. -

Spent a wonderful week at Podere Fontegallo. The views were spectacular and the apartment was very clean and comfortable. We used this as our base and visited several hill towns all within a one or two hour drive. The staff was extremely responsive to our needs and quickly resolved all of our issues no matter how small. I would highly recommend Podere Fontegallo to anyone planning a visit to this part of Italy.

Podere Fontegallo means 360 degrees great view, including the Trasimeno Lake. Great host and perfect facilities, from pool to wifi. High quality restored 17th century farmhouse.
Whether you look for the best restaurant, a typical Italian Laketrip by boat or just some aftersun cream for your kids; just ask Harris and he will take care.
It really is an excellent stay.

We've had 17 years'experience of holidays in Italy in self-catering apartments and Podere Fontegallo was up there with the best. The location is stunning with panoramic views over two lakes and very peaceful and quiet surroundings. Access to some of Tuscany's and Umbria's most beautiful towns is easy and the local town of Castiglione del Lago is charming. The accomodation is very comfortable, well equipped and easily accessed. Harris is the perfect host and very knowledgeable about the area.

Podere Fontegallo offers stunning views of this beautiful part of the world, from a tranquil setting. We had lots of plans to go sightseeing, which were wildly reduced as soon as we arrived at Podere Fontegallo because we simply couldn’t get away from the poolside, with its magnificent views.
It’s worth saying that there are lots of pretty little towns nearby and Sienna was around an hour drive away.
There are other great facilities that we took advantage of including the barbeque, which meant that we could indulge in delicious food and local wine without paying restaurant prices.
The owner, Harris, was friendly and on hand with tips and advice on what to do locally. He also kindly hand delivered plates of his own grown grapes and figs, which were a highlight.
Overall, a very pleasant and relaxing stay in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Will be staying at Podere Fontegallo again next year! -

Just back from a superb week staying in one of the one bedroom villas. The place is comfortable and well equipped, but the location and the views are breathtaking. There's massive amounts to see and do nearby, but we ended up lazing by the pool and barbecuing most evenings as it was such a fantastic spot. Cannot wait to return...

Left on 08/26/2011 for a stay in August 2011
Podere Fontegallo in Umbria was where we spent the first week of a two week family vacation. Though we've traveled to Italy several times, this was our first trip to Umbria and included our 3 teenage sons. It was everything we hoped it would be. The location and accommodations were perfect, while Harris was welcoming, warm and very knowledgeable about the area. The views by themselves are worth a return visit, but the apartment also was the right blend of rustic, comfort and style. We all highly recommend this property and hope to visit again before too many years pass.

If you want the perfect Umbrian exeperience, Podere Fontegallo is the place for you. The restored farmhouse is an oasis of calm, perfectly located for the history on it's doorstep yet set in splendid, lofty isolation. Harris, the owner, is charming, informative but not intrusive in any way (however, do take up his offer of a chartered boat trip on Lago di Trasimeno). The accommodation is clean and well-equipped, with fixtures and furnishings appropriate to its rich history. The gardens, which extend to almost one hectare and include a small olive grove and vineyard, are the perfect place for quiet reflection and for catching up on that holiday reading. Best of all though is the swimming pool... I really do recommend this place. Jon Grantham

Aspen, Colorado, USAOur Favorite Italian Getaway
Left on 05/24/2011 for a stay in May 2010
We first began staying at Podere Fontegallo in September of 2003. Tom and I rent bikes and do dozens of day trips from the villa -- an easy access to many quiet, well paved bike rides of 15 to 60 miles. On our first visit, I had an accident and broke a leg and ankle, and our host was invaluable to us in getting us through the ordeal and back to the us.
The following year, we had to finish the trip we hadn't been able to in 2003, so natually came back to the beautiful, relaxing villa and spent our time riding the great routes to all of the lovely and well-known villages once more.
Last year, 2010, we again spent our last week in Italy at our favorite spot in the world...Podere Fontegallo. The views, location, comfort and amenities at the villa apartment, and hospitality of our host make this our favorite annual vacation. We highly recommend it, and have to many of our friends! -

ExeterThe closest place to heaven?
Left on 05/23/2011 for a stay in October 2009
Il Fontegallo is probably the closest place to heaven you can find. The 360 degree views from the property of surrounding Umbria and Tuscany are worth staying for alone; the secure, gated grounds are a delight to sit in or eat al fresco and the pool is well supplied with parasols and loungers. We've always stayed in Il Cedro as it suited our specific requirements but all the apartments on the ground floor are similarly furnished in a comfortable and functional style. There are dishwashers in each one and (being picky) it would be good to have more of the basics - cup, plates, teaspoons etc - supplied to take account of this. The coffee machine is great to try your skills as a barrista with free coffee generously offered. All apartments have terraces where you can sit and drink it once made, eat breakfast, dinner or enjoy a glass of wine. One really important thing - there are screens at all the windows and doors to keep insects out - mozzies in particular - which is really vital to make your stay comfortable. There's a well stocked library of videos, Dvds and books if you need any other form of entertainment. Il Fontegallo is 400m from the road, along a white track - so be prepared for your car to get dusty - but once away from this you are 10 minutes from Castiligone del Lago and a further 10 from the a1 autostrada, so whether it's exploring locally or going further a field (there's a main rail link at Castiligone) the choice is yours. We have visited four times and still find new villages and towns each year.
The last thing I have to add about Il Fontegallo is their secret weapon, Yolanda, who is responsible for the place when Harris is away. Lovely Yolanda visits to see all is well and you have all you need, other than that you're left alone to enjoy the peace and tranquility of this glorious place. -

Left on 09/22/2010 for a stay in September 2010
We stayed in the smallest of the 4 self-contained apartments in the beautiful Villa (one of which is a separate cottage in the gardens). Our 1 bedroom apartment was exactly what one hopes for when staying in a Villa on the Umbrian/Tuscany border. The Villa has been restored with exceptional care and taste, and the large grounds and stunning pool make a perfect setting for it. It sits on the top of a hill with a 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside (and lakes). The apartment was well appointed and included a very easy-to-use expresso machine and a supply of expresso coffee! We ate all our meals on the large patio outside (under the shade of a mulberry tree). The sun shone every day and the other guests -- two families with young children -- made the stay even better; this is a perfect place for families as well as couples. Our hosts, Harris and Gael, who lived in the top floor apartment of the Villa, treated all their guests like friends from the first (and indeed have become friends) and went out of their way to make our stay perfect by offering local information about the hill towns to visit, sharing some meals with us, and delivering fresh figs, blackberries and grapes from their orchard and even a very yummy homemade fig crumble! The central location of Podere Fontegallo makes it a perfect base for exploring Umbria and Tuscany ( a car is a necessity) as well as being within 2 to 3 hours of Firenze, Sienna, and Rome (if you can pull yourself away from the Villa). We have traveled widely and stayed in many lovely places but this was one of the very best.

After a couple of days at the Lago del Garda, staying at Podere Fontegallo was heavenly. The silence, the views, the house, it was all wonderful. Laying at the pool it was hard to reed my book because I could not take my eyes off the beautiful surrounding. I miss the early mornings when I stepped out the door and heared nothing but birds. Visiting the nice villages as Montepulciano and Pienza was nice but the best part of the day was returning at the Podero. I am shure we will come back.

This place is just simply wonderful. If you are a couple or a family it suits either way. There is a pool, its quiet and peaceful. You're an easy drive from all key places to visit like Montepulciano, Cortona and even Siena ...but also tucked away if you want some peace. The local area has a lake and all the usual market, restaurant etc
The people at Fontegallo are lovely and nothing is too much to be organised!
Tips and recommendations on where to go were provided and if you don't wnat to go anywhere the scenery simply doesn't get better than that which you find simply on your doorstep when you wake up!
I wanted to keep this a secret but I realise that's just not fair! -

After 3 weeks of fast paced touring Podere Fontegallo was the perfect location for our last week in Italy. The one bedroom appartment Il Pino was well appointed with most of the comforts of home. Within an hours drive of the villa are many of the most beautiful towns in Italy, and each day was a decision to either explore in a new direction or stay by the pool in the beautiful park-lke grounds and take in the views of the Umbrian countryside and lakes. Our only regret was that we didn't stay longer. Outstanding.

Repoterd by an Italian it may seem a self-celebration but certainly after visiting Podere Fontegallo and all the wonders that are there close I cannot conclude otherwise.
The house is in an enviable position, enjoying a 360° panoramic view truly exceptional. Very well maintained and finished outside, it's not lacking in any comfort inside (there are dishwasher and coffee machine too). The choice of interior is very good.
The garden is well designed and very well maintained. Because of the too mild climate, we could not use the excellent swimming pool located in an strategic position. -

Podere Fontegallo is set among verdant fields with breathtaking vistas that go on for miles. The house was just a short drive from great restaurants and fascinating attractions in both Tuscany and Umbria. We were treated graciously by ex-pat American hosts Harris and Gail. What lovely, interesting people. The apartment we used had two bedrooms, a fully-stocked kitchen, a comfy living room and a good-sized bathroom. The entire apartment was sparkling clean. It was separate from the main house where Gail and Harris live. They were very helpful with any questions we had about the region but their house is completely separate so we had as much privacy as we desired. This is the best place we stayed in Italy. I recommend it without hesitation.

Podere Fontegallo is an ideal place for anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. Podere Fontegallo was above and beyond our greatest expectations. This impeccably restored Villa in the Umbria/Tuscany countryside was home to us for 2 weeks. The views of the rolling hills and lakes from this hilltop Villa were breathtaking and spectacular. Everywhere we looked was a feast for the eyes. The accomodations were first class with every modern convenience, including a swimming pool, but at the same time, completely retaining 16th century charm and beauty. The location was perfect. We went sightseeing in a different direction almost every day,and every place you would ever want to see in Tuscany or Umbria was not more than an hour away. Podere Fontegallo is an idyllic confection. You can see and feel the love and care put into every detail of this magnificent compound. Umbria itself is one of the most beautiful places on earth. When you experience Umbria along with a stay at Podere Fontegallo it is truly nothing short of magical! I know that this all sounds like some sort of contrived and overblown statement, but I mean it in all sincerity! Superlatives are completely in order as the house, the grounds - and the owner and his girlfriend - are really beyond compare.
The house, apartments and guest house: beautiful & comfortable. Well thought out and wonderfully equipped.
The grounds: impeccably maintained. Pool is sparklingly clean and inviting. The view - so magnificent words can not describe.
The owner (and his girlfriend): Super curteous, super knowlegable & super accomodating.
The location: picturesque and convenient. Easy drive to innumerable places of beauty history and culture.

When I think of our two weeks in "Il Cedro" this summer, I first of all remember this impressive view:
While having breakfast on the terrasse, your eyes travel from the Toscana (Montepulciano, lago di Chiusi) on the right, passing by the pool in front to Vaiano on one of these famous umbrian gentle hills and the lago Trasimeno on the left and then up to the warm italian sun.
It's a perfect place to relax.
The house is very comfortable and stylish, the pool large, clean and warm, the park well-trimmed, and the landlords very pleasant.
Free wifi helped us planning our excursions to important etruscan sites and lovely tuscan towns and even allowed to have an eye on our business at home if necessary.
We will definitely come again. -

We spend our holiday twice here; in 2006 and in 2008 and will surely go back some other time. Only disadvantage was the cleaninglady... you had to ask her to clean the rooms and change the towels, otherwise nothing much would have been done.

AT PODERE FONTEGALLO IN CASTIGLIONE DEL
LAGO, ITALY. WE CAN SUM UP OUR
EXPERIENCE WITH ONE PHRASE, "IL
PARADISO." COULD THIS BE THE MOST
BEAUTIFULLY MAINTAINED VACATION VILLA
IN THE WORLD? WE'VE TRAVELED FROM
THAILAND TO RUSSIA TO ENGLAND,
INDONESIA, FRANCE, AND NEVER HAVE COME
ACROSS ACCOMMODATIONS TO EQUAL MR.
FRIEDMAN'S PODERE FONTEGALLO. BEAUTIFUL
APARTMENTS ON A MOUNTAINSIDE
OVERLOOKING TWO LAKES SURROUNDED BY
PRISTINE FARMS, FANTASTIC VIEWS, AND AT
LEAST FIFTEEN ENCHANTING MEDIEVAL AND
RENAISSANCE MOUNTAIN VILLAGES. THE
AMENITIES ARE PERFECT WHEN YOU
CONSIDER THERE IS A FULL WORKING
KITCHEN IN EACH APARTMENT,
COMFORTABLE BEDROOMS, FULL BATHS WITH
SHOWERS, AND WELL-FURNISHED LIVING AND
DINING AREAS. THE DECOR IS RUSTIC AND
CHARMING. MR. FRIEDMAN IS A CONGENIAL
HOST WHO DOES NOT SMOTHER HIS GUESTS
WITH UNWANTED ATTENTION. I ONLY WISH
WE COULD SPEND MORE TIME EACH YEAR AT
PODERE FONTEGALLO. -

An experience we will never forget. Staff were so
helpful, very clean
facilities with all the amenities
that you would need to enjoy your
stay. Beautiful
views from all the units and a fantastic pool area.
Close to the train station and surrounding villages.
We have already
recommended this property to many of
our friends and fellow travelers.
A must visit

As you can see this is a wonderful review of Podere Fontegallo. Christine and Peter have kept in touch with us and are recommending us to their friends. I have just looked at Christina & Peters rating form and found that they rated us 5 STARS in all categories.
Therefore the one star rating is an error on the FlipKey website.

Staying at Podere Fontegallo was restorative, inspiring and a completely beautiful experience. From the moment I stepped foot onto the estate, the first evening I arrived, I felt I was somewhere magical. In the morning this feeling was confirmed by the golden light, rich earth, panoramic views of the countryside and the gentle warmth of the estate. My room was quiet and large, included a full kitchen and dining area and was steps away from a sparkling swimming pool. Internet access was fast and available everywhere.
For one week I was without stress. I felt like I was in my own private villa and the choice of whether to swim first or walk in a fruit orchard was my biggest concern most mornings. In every direction there are fantastic breathtaking sights and many wonderful restuarants are not far away. The service at Podere Fontegallo was attentive and unintrusive. I look forward to returning and hope I can spend more than one week the next time I treat myself to the magic of Podere Fontegallo in Castiglione del Lago. -

We rented Il Pino for 3 weeks and everything was just great. We enjoyed the surroundings & were close enough to be able to do day trips to Florence, Siena, & many other interesting spots. You need a car to stay here but accommodations & our welcome was beyond. We enjoyed time at the pool & just sitting on our own patio from where we could see little villages & Lake Chuisi. Would recommend this villa to all & am even considering returning in a few years to rent the little cottage.

Everything that was promised was delivered ... and more. I can recommend Podere Fontegallo without any "buts" or reservation. With all of the traveling I have done (and that has been a lot) Umbria now tops my favorite list.

podere fontegallo is an amazing country retreat, yet close to all the major attractions: rome, florence, siena, orvieto, and dozens of medieval towns are just a short car ride or train trip away. the facilities are five star: sparkling swimming pool, kitchen equipped with expresso machine, professional utensils and a dishwasher. harris freedman went out of his way to make my stay a memorable experience, full of helpful advice on things to see and do, reserving restaurants and boat trips, the perfect host. the apartment was elegant, clean and one of the most comforrtable beds i've ever slept in. i will definitely be a return visitor!
