Additional Location Information
Cedar Key is a small arts and seafood/fishing village located about 50 miles southwest of Gainesville, Florida; 2.5 hours north of Tampa, Florida; and 3 hours west of Jacksonville, FL. (Lat: N 2908.3 Long: W 08303.0) Surrounded by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Cedar Keys consist of dozens of islands or keys. Way Key is the key that the city of Cedar Key is built upon. About a dozen of those keys are reserved as a part of the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge and several are designated as "wilderness areas". The Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge hosts some of the largest numbers of nesting birds in Florida. Bird watching is easy, whether you walk the shores or paddle your kayak out to the wildlife refuge. The town is small and quaint - a fishing village with artists and writers. There are some shops, galleries, and restaurants. Nightlife is limited to a few bars on Dock Street. Most of the activity revolves around the sea - fishing, kayaking, boating, sailing, clamming, scalloping, photographing... Come get away from the world at Serenity in Cedar Key. Bath, MaineSerenity is Well-named
Left on 04/01/2013 for a stay in March 2013
Years ago my husband and I enjoyed a very brief visit to Cedar Key. After our lovely days at Serenity this year, we wonder why it took us so long to return. Over and over our expectations were surpassed by even better reality - like our first sunny morning with a low tide. We sat down on the deck to enjoy good coffee and found ourselves watching roseate spoonbills with herons and egrets and an army of little peeps. Across on a sandbar an american oystercatcher was at work. Soon a couple of people threw out fishing lines from the little dock, and pelicans began their vigil.
On days when tides or winds made kayaking seem like a bad idea, we found wonderful walking trails. We enjoyed the railroad bed trail which has good botanical markers and a trail near the cemetery - good for birding and for gaining a sense of history. The trails at the shell mound, at Dennis Creek, and at the scrub forest are fascinating, and a walk to the cemetery on atsena Otea made us want to know more about the area.
Back at Serenity, happy surprises kept coming to us. When our elderly cell phone sputtered and died, the phone on the kitchen counter came to our rescue. The condo computer performed the few tasks which we needed, and the kitchen was astonishingly well-equipped.
Restaurants seldom tempted us with their breakfasts. After all we had our room with a view plus better coffee. We did enjoy excellent restaurant dinners - especially at the Island Hotel.
When the March weather turned blustery, our deck offered new surprises including a sunset through great roiling dark clouds and then a nearly full arc of rainbow. If we got tired of looking at the distance, little visitors like yellow throated warblers and grackles came to the deck, convinced that we must have left crumbs for them. As for a balanced critique, I'm trying really hard to think of something we disliked, but nothing is coming to mind.Response from Cedar Key Cindy - 04/02/2013

This condo was wonderful! Perfect view, nice decor, great location, and pet friendly! I could not ask for more. We went over for three nights and had a blast. Rented a golf cart for two days (a must for Cedar Key). We were able to go places we have never been before on the island. We enjoyed great seafood and nice local bars. This place is fantastic! I will be back for sure...

The property website and reservation confirmation email provided tons of info about the property and area as well as all we needed to know. We had not been to the area before so it was all new to us. If you want to eat on the cheap the full kitchen is great - just bring your own groceries. Also outdoor grills available. We tried a couple of the restuarants. Dinner at Pickled Pelican and great breakfast at Rusty Rim which has a spectacular view.
The unit is spacious with a high peak roof and loft, open floor plan. Well kept and clean. Relatively new units. Furnishings are somewhat typical tropical/florida. Quite comfortable.
Large windows frame the view and a deck overlooks the nature/water/ocean. Situated nicely at the rear of the development, it is semi private. Loaded with amenities - many Dvd's to watch as well as on demand music, net ready PC. We never even had time to watch, but on extended stay, great for kids and adults for something to do at night. Nice park nearby for kids. Very peaceful, relaxing location. It a step back to "Old Florida" with some modern conveniences. -

We recently spent a week in Serenity & are already planning to return next winter. It's a beautiful spot, gorgeous views from the balcony, especially if you like to look at roseate spoonbills, herons, osprey, egrets, pelicans etc. etc. And we even located a huge eagle's nest with 2 adult birds in it just before our visit ended.
Cedar Key is very quiet, no jet skis, hardly any motor boats, perfect for kayaking & just quiet contemplation, a few good places to eat & a well-equipped kitchen in the condo made it a great week & next year we're planning on two.Response from Cedar Key Cindy - 02/15/2012

Serenity is nicely situated in a beautiful spot within walking distance of the town beach, pier, shops and restaurants on Cedar key. We had a great time at Serenity. It worked out really well for our family! We loved the decor and sitting out on the balcony watching the birds and fishermen go by. Our teen-aged sons were impressed with the technology offered in the unit and they enjoyed swimming in the pool. We had Easter dinner at the Front Room. The food was excellent. We also got take out on Saturday night from Tony's, also very good. We rented kayaks and visited some of the islands that had nice white beaches. A pair of dolphins joined us on our journey and had more fun jumping out of the waters and swimming under our kayaks. It was a very enchanting experience. Everyone we encountered was friendly. The owners do a great job of providing information about their unit which exceeded our expectations. They also provide good information about what to do in the area, including where to get fresh seafood, good coffee, etc. We were able to maximize our time because we didn't have to figure out everything for ourselves.
Be prepared to climb several flights of stairs to get to the unit - it will keep you in shape and is worth it for the great breeze and beautiful views.
I would love to go back sometime. You have a great spot!
Thanks for the good information and having such a well equipped home.

If you want peace and relaxation, visit Cedar Key...If you want peace and relaxation with all of the comforts of home, stay at Serenity!!
First and foremost, the view is spectacular! It is by far the best we've ever seen. Walking east to the picnic bench to view the sun rise was a super start to our day.
Tony's, The Island Hotel, The Island Room - what great restaurants!! We met Otis, thee "Black Dog!" He and our labradoodle got along pretty well! Sitting in the bar room at the Island Hotel, we met and talked with several "locals" including the people from the Cedar Key Pottery We had just bought a piece of their pottery that very afternoon!
Golfing, art classes, boat rides, walking and pool visits filled our days. The pool and jacuzzi are so clean. We should have brought our kayaks for this is the best place for that.
Southern Cross Sea Farms allowed us to prepare great meals at home. We appreciate the kitchen's nice cookware and "real" glass glasses!
The couch is very comfy. The bath towels almost spa-like. The hairdryer worked very well. While there were only two of us, we didn't use the upstairs. But we did take a peak and thought it was set up so efficiently.
We liked the sights and sounds of all of the birds, but it was Nemo, or dog, who got the biggest kick out of them. For the first time, we saw the american White Pelicans...how beautiful! They looked llike swans from a distance. Captain Doug did a fine job on his cruise.
It's been a great month. Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise!

We absolutely loved the condo! When we arrived we sat on
the balcony and saw several roseate spoonbills. We rented kayaks very early the next morning and watched the sunrise. We had dolphins swimming right by us and we saw beautiful birds and numerous fish. This made getting up early something our two 14 year old boys didn't even complain about! We rented a golf cart and went on an exploration of the town. There were plenty of restaurants to choose from and I had some of the best grouper I've ever eaten (and I grew up on the Gulf coast of Florida).
We hated to leave and we all agreed that our stay in Cedar Key was the highlight of our "road trip" to Florida.
