Blackburn, United KingdomSuper house for two with bonus of roof terrace.
Left on 11/23/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This house (Melidoni) is very conveniently situated in Chania Old Town. 2 minutes from the supermarket, 5 from the harbour, and that is on foot. It is located in a traffic free small lane that is purely residential, and you feel you are living like a local !
Gail met us as agreed at the house and showed us round and gave us tips on restaurants etc. It is not often you can find a good value property for 2 as all too often they claim the bed settee makes it suitable for 3 or 4, even when the living space is not sufficient for a family. And consequently the weekly rate is based on 4 people. Not here! Good value, compact town house, beautifully renovated and with the great added bonus of a spacious roof terrace which I used extensively even though it was into the month of November when we left. The kitchen was well equipped with plenty of pans, crockery, glasses and cutlery. It was quite possible to cook an evening meal (I did so on three occasions) and there was the added bonus of a small oven as well as the usual electric rings. Gail came during the week to change towels and sheets, which was great and more than we had expected.
On our departure day we were able to vacate at our leisure as there was the cunning little key safe outside the front door to leave the key in.
Renting somewhere like this is so much better than a hotel. You feel part of the community and can choose to eat in or go to one of the many super restaurants that are within a few minutes walk. We will be back to this beautiful house, in an interesting and largely un-commercialised part of Crete.Response from Gail Wareham - 12/07/2012
Owner
Thanks for such a wonderfully detailed review. We really appreciate it when people take the time to show how much they enjoyed their stay, it helps us keep up the good work!
For possible renters reading this review, please note that it has been posted against the house named 'Gavaladon' but infact relates to our other house called 'Melidoni'. You can see the house details on our website www.chaniaoldtownhouse.com. Gavaladon only has a balcony, whereas Melidoni (as mentioned here) has a roof terrace.
Thanks once again for the fab review, we hope to see you again!! Best wishes, Gail & Keith. -

Inverurie, United KingdomMemorable stay in very comfortable old town house
Left on 11/02/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Owners, Keith and Gail, were so helpful and the old house so well located. When we arrived in Crete there was a general strike and no way of us getting from Heraklion airport to Chania. Keith offered to pick us up even though that meant a 4 hour + round trip for him. We were so grateful to him for his kindness. The old town house is really a great place to stay and is literally on the doorstep of all Chania's attractions. It felt so homely and authentic and at the end of our stay we were so sad to leave.

Newport, NC, USAThis is the perfect place to stay in Chania
Left on 02/23/2012 for a stay in February 2012
We are nearing the end of our stay at Chania Old Town House/Gavaladon, and I can easily say that this is the perfect place to stay in Chania. From the moment of our first inquiry about the house and throughout our stay, all of our accommodation needs were met. Our initial and subsequent inquiries about the house were answered immediately and in great detail by Gail. The reservation and confirmation process was so easy. And even with our early morning arrival, Gail met us at the property to acquaint us with specifics about the house and introduce us to Chania and Crete. The house is immaculate and well appointed for short or long stays (We were there for 3 weeks). I really appreciated weekly housekeeping and changed linens - not something included in all self catering stays. The split level living and sleeping arrangement gives this authentically restored place a roomy feel and the porch through the Venetian windows adds another space to enjoy. The house is ideally located to take advantage of the best that Chania has to offer. In the heart of Old Town, you are steps from all of the historic sights, (You are actually part of them!), museums, charming cafes, tavernas and upscale restaurants. Of course, every kind of shopping is within a few walking minutes - grocery, bakery, trinkets, clothes, ... We rented a car by the day to explore Crete and really enjoyed such easy access to picking up and dropping the car at the end of the day. Finally, you will not find more accommodating and hospitable hosts than Gail and Keith. They made sure we felt at home in their house and went out of their way to share their enthusiasm for Chania and Crete with us. Every aspect of our stay at Chania Old Town House/Gavaladon was flawless. This is the place to book your stay. Thanks so much Gail and Keith.

Left on 07/13/2011 for a stay in June 2011
A perfect, bijou, authentic townhouse which is just 2 minutes stroll to all the main attractions in Chania - old town, Venetian port & old harbour. The property is very traditional & is kept exceptionally clean, with linen & towels changed regularly. We found the owners, Gail & Keith, to be very friendly & efficient in dealing with all our enquiries & booking. We'd definitely recommend this as being ideal for couples.

This is a super house ideally siituated in the old town. Very comfortable - though the shower is a bit tiny - and well maintained. The property has great charm and is extremely good value. Gail and Keith were welcoming, friendly and very helpful.
Highly recommended.

Chania Old Town House is a very comfortable house in the centre of the Old Town. The service we received from the owners was efficient and helpful right from the initial email enquiry through to check in, including supplying a bottle of champagne for our anniversary when I requested it. Chania is a great spot, and the house is close to many excellent restaurants. Value for money is an added bonus.

Cork, IrelandRelaxing & refreshing start to the New Year
Left on 02/24/2011 for a stay in January 2011
We stayed at the house for 4 nights and found it to be a real home from home. The only thing that was missing were my slippers! Very central to the harbour and all the old town facilities, and so clean - the cleanest place we have ever stayed in Greece and with bathroom fittings that don't leak! We arrived at the crack of dawn off the overnight ferry from athens and gained access to the house straight away with the secure keybox being available. We loved everything about the house and even though Chania was very quiet in January, we found plenty to keep us occupied. We will recommend this place to all our friends. Thanks to Gail and Keith for a lovely stay, hope to see you again soon.

Lovely traditionally decorated small but spacious enough house for two persons or if needed even for three. The house has everything that you need for you holiday. Everything worked well and even it was a bit cold put inside the house wasnt cold and nice hot shower. Location of the house is perfect; its in the old town close to all the nice coffee places and shopping areas. Even it is really in the heart of Chania it was nice and quiet while our stay. We wanted to have a romantic weekend and we really did have that.Next time we go to Chania i would stay there again for sure, much nicer than staying in hotel room, it makes you feel like being part of the real cretan way of life.

Left on 11/04/2010 for a stay in October 2010
Wow! I could leave it at that, but suppose we should say more. The house is small, clean, private, central, beautifully renovated, and excellent value. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and will definitely be booking the house again if we return to chania. Cannot see the point in booking a hotel room when you can get all the comforts of home whilst enjoying a city break at the same time. Chania is also wonderful. Fantastic old town, and great shopping in the modern town too. Thanks for everything Gail.

Wonderful location right in the heart of the old harbour. Loads of great restaurants and shopping all within a few seconds of walking from the apartment. If you would like a beach holiday coupled with the option of hundreds of great places to eat and drink away from the more touristy locations, then this place is the perfect!

Manchester UKBest Stay In Chania in Ten Years!
Left on 08/24/2010 for a stay in July 2010
Living half in the UK and half on the south coast of Crete we have spent many "City Breaks" in Chania over the years for its restaurants and shops. Nowhere we have stayed before comes close to this, both for its comfort standards and location. Easy to find, easy to come and go from when the day gets too hot, or the (wife's shoe) shopping gets too heavy, easy to sleep - comfortable bed and no all night motorbikes!

Left on 08/05/2010 for a stay in July 2010
We stayed at the Chania Old Town House for a short period of two days, but it was a wonderful place to be. The house is only small, but it really had everything we wanted. My wife has special diet requirements which meant that having our own kitchen facilities was a real bonus. We ate at the house and didn't have to question any waiters! The house is very clean, and is very traditional. The location is very central too so it is easy to pop back during the day if you want an hour out, or like us, you want to have lunch at home. There was some noise in the evenings from passers by, but you cant be located in the centre of a busy old city and expect total peace and quiet. We loved it, and will recommend it. We live on Crete, so no doubt we will be back for another weekend in this little home from home.
