Relaxing weekend in Charlottesville wine country

Left on 02/02/2013 for a stay in January 2013

Wow! My five girlfriends and I just came back refreshed from this beautiful family homeplace near Charlottesville, Va. The property is gorgeous--surrounded by fields with woods further back, a stream, two barns, and even an outdoor fireplace to sit by and roast marshmallows. Our favorite room in the house is the cedar panelled sun parlor which has windows on three sides. We had views of fields and dense woods and unusual birds stopping by the bird feeder out the back window. Made a fire and sat for hours, talking and reading books. Also, went for a long tramp in the surrounding woods and fields and then, came back to the house for a hearty meal we fixed in the large, well equipped kitchen. There is a lot to do nearby. We enjoyed Montpelier, James Madison's restored home, about 10 minutes away. Rode by two wineries, Barboursville and Horton. Had two great lunches, one at the Stonefire in the old fire house in Barboursville and the other at the Barbecue Exchange in Gordonsville. Gordonsville had some fun shops to explore on Main Street. We were only here for the weekend, but we could have stayed much longer. The owner was pleasant and accomodating. We knew it wasn't a fancy place so we didn't have expectations of elaborate furnishings. But, for a comfortable, restful and affordable vacation, this property can't be beat! Already planning our next trip.

      Great Weekend

Left on 01/13/2013 for a stay in November 2012

We traveled with a group of couples for a 50th birthday wine tasting weekend. Had a blast. The home is not fancy but is tidy and a great value. Rented a van that did door to door service for an afternoon of wine tasting and then kicked back at the house. The property was fun to explore and we spent hours around the fire pit. John the owner was wonderful. We hope to come back with our kids next fall.

      Cozy, homey, private and relaxing!

Left on 11/05/2012 for a stay in October 2012

I would first like to say that the pictures don't do this home justice! It's spacy, private and most importantly it feels like a home! We cooked all of our meals and the kitchen was spacious and fully stocked with things we forgot, like plastic wrap and foil! John (the owner) was very accomodating, we arrived in town earlier than expected and he had the home ready even though we came early! He also was thoughtful enough to leave a cellphone (because Verizon doesn't get reception in the area) and it came in handy for majority of the ladies who had verizon! We came to the mountains for a wine trail and this was the perfect place to unwind after 'sipping the day away' :) The house is just a few minutes from Barboursville Winery (which I highly recommend).

Many Nice Features = Some improvement needed

Left on 10/06/2012 for a stay in September 2012

I had a lovely time with my sisters in this house. The rooms were large and the views wonderful. We enjoyed the out door fire pit and the grill. The house is old and in the country so don't expect perfection. One disappointment was there were only 1.5 baths instead of 2 as advertised.

      Home Comfort

Left on 07/14/2012 for a stay in July 2012

During the blazing hot spell that hit Northern Virginia after the unexpected storm which took out power in the DC area (July 2012), we made a trip to the Charlottesville/ Barboursville area to tour some wineries and Monticello. This was our first Flipkey experience, and we were delighted! The house feels like a home, as it was. There are interesting momentos sprinkled about, the rooms are spacious, and the a/c (important to us at that time) worked like a charm. Our only regret was that it was just too darn hot to take advantage of the walking paths on and around the property. For those interested in touring area wineries, you are a stone's throw from the Barboursville Winery, near Horton and several others. We hope to return when the weather is cooler, so we can enjoy the fireplaces and outdoor firepit.

Great location for a girls getaway!

Left on 03/27/2012 for a stay in March 2012

We just returned from a great weekend in Barboursville and had a fabulous experience with this house! I hosted a bachelorette for a friend getting married this spring. There were 10 girls so we had plenty of room to spread out. One of our friends is a personal chef so she cooked all our meals at the house, the kitchen was well stocked and the large dining room was perfect for us all to eat together. The yard is very large and great for families (and rowdy 30 year olds), we had hoped to do smores around the outside fire pit but alas it rained on us.

John (the owner) was great, we had a little issue with the refrigerator and he immediately called a repairman to come fix it (poor repairman, he may never be the same again).

The only downfall to the house is that there is only 1 shower but after 10 ladies showering, we still had hot water so there is definitely something to be said for that!

Again, the house is not "fancy pants” but has lots of room, is very comfortable and was a great place for a large gathering. I highly recommend it for your next family reunion or girls getaway! (we took advantage of the location and visited several of the local vineyards, if you stay at this house and want to do a wine tour, call James Limousine, they were great!)

      Perfect Location for Us

Left on 03/05/2012 for a stay in February 2012

This is a great house. We used it as a base for touring Monticello and Montpelior (equidistant between the two) and Charlottesville. It would also be ideal for touring the Virginia wine country.

Couldn't have been more perfect for our family weekend in Charlo

Left on 01/17/2012 for a stay in January 2012

This house was absolutely perfect for our family weekend in Charlottesville. The house was warm and cozy in January and immediately we felt "at home" in this place! The kids were in their glory with the toys and games, and the adults appreciated having a fire each night in the side room after dinner. The location was perfect for us as we visited local wineries, Montpelier and other historic sites in the area. Monticello was only 30 minutes south. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to stay together in a lovely home!

A charming Christmas away from home in Charlottesville

Left on 01/03/2012 for a stay in December 2011

This home is very nice, comfortable, and quiet place to stay for travelers with a large family or small group. It is a charming country home with full amenities and located on a nice large spread of land. The beds are very comfortable, which is not always the case with rentals. Overall, it is a peaceful place to stay and rest, even in the winter time. Unless you need to be right in or close to Charlottesville, it would be hard to beat this terrific deal. One drawback is that some cell phone service providers have weak reception in the area around the house. However, the host is fantastic. Every concern we encountered was addressed promptly, cheerfully, and satisfactorily. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

Left on 11/28/2011 for a stay in November 2011

The house is great. Such a wonderful setting. We enjoyed walking the trails and checking out the outbuildings. John was easy to work with and so accommodating to our group. Other than the 'Hoos losing terribly to the Hokies, I couldn't have asked for a better weekend!

      Thanks for everything.

Wonderfully relaxed at a beautiful location

Left on 09/29/2011 for a stay in August 2011

My sisters and I really enjoyed the serene setting of this home. The house was very beautiful and welcoming. The old merged well with the new. It has the charm of our Grandmothers home with all of the modern conveniences we needed. I would recommend this home to anyone that wants the feel of home in a vacation rental. Thanks John for providing this home away from home.
