This home is a large 5 bedroom lake house built in the 1880's with all modern amenities. There is a large eat in kitchen, dining room, living room, sun room, game room, large covered porch and 1/2 bath on the first floor with 5 bedrooms and two baths upstairs.
My family and I have been coming to Point Chautauqua for over 50 years and my parents and cousins have shared a house since the 1960's. We purchased this huge house after renting it for several years during our family reunions.
The house is ideal for a large group and/or families with plenty of area for children to play and adults to relax. The first floor has plenty... of common area to accommodate everyone without feeling crowded. There is a detached garage for additional storage of any recreational equipment you want to bring and a grass driveway with plenty of space. Cable TV, Blueray player with Roku player for access to Netflix, Hulu and other streaming video; as well as internet access via cable modem and Wi-Fi are provided.
The home is located in the private lake community of Point Chautauqua which is located in Dewittville, NY. We are 10 minutes from Bemus Point and the Chautuaqua Institute. The house is ideally situated 150 yards from the water and 100 yards from the community field which includes a tennis court and baseball field.
This house is thought to be the third house built at Point Chautauqua and was completed in the late 1880's as the home of Ward Cadwell whose family owns and operates a cheese shop in Dewittville. We are only the fourth owner of this home in over 125 years.
Point Chautauqua was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and has been designated a historical site by the State of NY.
The Point Chautauqua Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Portions of the text below were adapted from a copy of the original nomination document. The Point Chautauqua Historic District in Chautauqua County, New York is located on a peninsula along the shores of Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York State. The site is approximately three miles from the village of Mayville. The Point Chautauqua Historic District is a planned resort community that was laid out in 1875 as a Baptist camp meeting to the design of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. Within a generation, the religious retreat had evolved into a resort community, which continued to develop in that mode throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The eighty-acre Point Chautauqua Historic District is characterized by its serpentine street system, which ascends the steep wooded slopes of its lakeside site, and its collection of single-family residences from throughout the period of significance.
The Point Chautauqua Historic District occupies a promontory on the northeastern shore of Lake Chautauqua, an eighteen-mile-long, irregularly shaped body of water confined within a deep valley. The hills rise 'en echelon' above the lake on either side, displaying the rounded forms typical of this glaciated sector of the Appalachian Plateau. At an elevation of 1,309 feet above sea level, Lake Chautauqua is one of the highest large fresh-water bodies of water in the country. Its waters drain through the Allegheny River into the Ohio-Mississippi system. These natural features have provided the district with a lush, sloping landscape bordering a curving waterfront. The Point Chautauqua Historic District covers a hilly area ascending steeply (105 feet) from the shore of Lake Chautauqua.
Point Chautauqua Historic District is almost directly across the lake from the Chautauqua Institute.Read more
