Our week at Odessa was amazing. There is much magical here. Close proximity to town, breathtaking view, walking access to a fine snorkel site, two cats (one feral, one sweet and funny) and an outdoor shower that we loved. Coincidentally, we went during the peak of hurricane season. Many places closed while we were there and we had the island to ourselves. And, the weather was excellent! I won't give away all the secrets of Odessa, but it was the definitive old school island experience.
Five stars from us. A bonus is that the owner is a straight up guy and easy to work with.

We were very excited to stay at this villa...afterall the pictures are just amazing, aren't they? Well the pictures tell a very different story than the reality. The reality that we found was a run down house, with rust on the walls, air conditioning that barely worked in 1 bedroom(and had a lovely raggedy tshirt crammed up underneath it), was virtually non existent in another bedroom. The deck chairs were broken, that is if they weren't completely rusted through the metal. The screens that gaping holes in them so that mosquitos would eat you alive while you slept on mattresses that you were the worst mattresses I've ever slept on, I could actually feel the coils. The lamps in the downstairs rear bedroom were broken. Ever wonder why theres no pictures of the bathrooms? Maybe because you really don't want to see them. The jack and jill bathroom downstairs, the sink wouldn't drain, and the other downstairs bathroom had a regular everyday light fixture in it that wasn't safe to be around water, and my favorite touch was the light switch that was in the shower.
Parts of the safety railing had been replaced with plastic trellis that wouldn't have done anything to keep anyone from falling through and the high tension cable wire that is also supposed to act as a safety barrier around the pool deck sections of it had been replaced by rope, also unsafe. The pool deck shakes when anyone walks on it, makes you wonder if theres an earthquake...no it's just someone walking. My son cut his foot on the pool, and my kids fell several times on the crooked, dangerous steps that are just crazy. It's hard to explain them but there are alot and they are extremely hard to navigate even if you're young and in good health.
The furniture in the great room is the hardest most uncomfortable furniture we have ever sat on in our lives and the room was stifling hot even in October/November even though the rental management agency assured us that theres always a breeze and air condition wasn't needed.
The upstairs bedroom had some mystery(and I'd prefer not know what they are) stains on the sheets, and the upstairs bathroom, when it rains, the water leaks into the light fixture and sparks fly if you have the light on.
There were numerous cob webs and dead bugs aroudn the house as well and the rugs all had stains on them.
The hot tub did not work but that was the least of our worries. We rented this house expexting the beautiful, charming beach cottage that is shown in the pictures, not the run down house that we discovered when we arrived. Do yourselves a favor and rent someplace else.
I had paid the balance of my rental early and was hounded by the owner at the 30 day mark for the remaining half that he thought was still due even though he had already cashed the check. There was a voicemail left on my office voicemail that is just a general mailbox, so my boss heard it. I never gave Dr. Sklarew my work number, he had it on caller id from 9 months prior and had saved it.
We left after 3 nights, we took a list of problems with the house(I believe it was 3 pages) to the villa management company. In the end it was Dr. Sklarew who agreed to pay for us to stay in another villa for the remaining 4 nights of our stay. We would have paid to stay somewhere else out of our own pocket though, because that's how bad this place is.Response from Bruce H. Sklarew, M.D. - 01/28/2012

I'm sorry to say that this guest was not happy from the time they arrived on Island. Our house is rented the major part of the year, and we have never gotten such comments previously. As you can see, our main priority was to make the guest happy and we paid to have them moved to another rental.

If I could say only one word about this villa it would be wow!
We had a great family vacation. My daughter loved the lookout by the house where she would spend time reading on the hammock. The pool was refreshing in all the hot weather. My family would walk on the private beach and collect interesting shells. We felt like we were the only ones there, no one bothered us the whole time. The house is a short driving distance to the town, so we could go out to dinner some nights. There were 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The house felt like one with nature as it was built into the mountain. We were surrounded by nature and felt relaxed after a stressful life at home. I definitely recommend staying here, we will be coming out again very soon.
