What Past Guests Are Saying
A fabulous Italian experience!
Stayed at Casa del Fiume for a week in august. Had an absolutely fantastic holiday! The house is beautifully and stylishly appointed and very well equipped. All kitchen equipment provided including cleaning products etc for dishwasher and washing machine. Upstairs the bedrooms were again beautifully and thoughtfully furnished and equipped. Comfortable beds, beautiful bedlinen - everything spotlessly clean. Weather was very hot during our stay but we followed Stew and Ruth's advice to keep shutters closed during the day and the house stayed beautifully cool with it's wonderful marble floors and high ceilings.
Enjoyed sitting out on the spacious terrace to eat and the gardens and riverside area were lovely. Being in the river was great fun, especially when an occasional raft came past. Views from the house were lovely, surrounded by countryside and the mountains.
Visited lots of places in the local area. Everything was in easy driving distance and roads were good.
Loved our visits to Casoli - the market, shops and lovely coffee shop and to Lanciano with it's market, shops and churches.
The Trabocchi beaches on the adriatic coast were a short drive away and both sea and beaches were beautiful.Enjoyed "Stew and Ruth's Beach" and visiting the fish restaurant.
We loved visiting the Tilli Vineyard and the winetasting with the family. Fabulous wine, scenery and wonderful to meet such generous, welcoming people.
The caves at Cavallone were well worth a visit and as someone who is nervous of heights I actually loved the cable car ride up into the mountains to walk up into the caves. Stunning scenery!
Our last night was spent with Stew and Ruth at the Festa in the village. We loved it! Pasta feast in the village square, beer and wine and excellent live folk music from Terra del Sud. Joined in with the dancing and enjoyed the Dolci served at Midnight! Fabulous evening!
Thank you to Stew and Ruth for such a fantastic holiday and for sharing their home, knowledge and time with us!
Beautiful - everything so beautiful!
When you find something that looks so good on the internet its hard to believe it could be better than you imagined but that's just what Casa del Fiume delivered. So beautifully and tastefully restored the house was devoid of anything that didn't appeal to the eye, from the paintings on the walls to the furnishings. Even the kitchen was gorgeous. The courtyard seating area was a dream and the barbecue complete with chimney was a delight even though we felt a bit guilty using it as Stewart and Ruth are veggies. The view of the mountains through the windows of the double room is something I'll never forget. Stewart and Ruth could not have been more attentive and thoughtful hosts and their local knowledge was amazing. They took us wine tasting and to Casoli market, both of which were truly memorable experiences. They also told us about the best beach to visit and the best local restaurants. Stewart is a dab hand at drawing you a map! They generously shared their home grown figs and tomatoes with us and Ruth's apricot jam is to die for.if there is a down side do make sure you like cats if you come here - there are masses! All very cute. The climb down to the river is very steep although both our elderly parents made it at least once. It was very very hot when we were there and we all got bitten so do take insect repellent if you go in high Summer.

Beautiful setting and a lovely stay
Stewart & Ruth were both very helpful with info about the area & Stu provided us daily with a hand drawn map to wherever we wanted to go (he missed his calling as a cartographer) The home was very clean and comfy and stayed lovely & cool despite the outside temps. We made a lot of cat friends also. The grounds are wonderful especially down by the river. We had plenty of fresh figs & apricots which we could pick straight from the trees. The location is stunning and ideally located for exploring the mountains & an easy drive to lovely beaches. Wish we had spent 2 weeks instead of 1. Missing it already. A vacation is what you make it and there you can do as much or little as you want. A lovely little piece of heaven.
Stew and Ruth have a delightful holiday home with amazing garden and mountain views. They are thoughtful, helpful and caring owners with great advice on places to visit. Tremendous local knowledge. The Majella National Park is one of the most stunning places that we visited. The beaches, seafood and local markets are superb. We hope to return next year.
Everything you could want from being in a villa in Italy
We've been renting villas in different parts of Italy for twelve years and found this had everything: comfort, genial and helpful hosts, fantastic views locally, few tourists even in July, great hikes and charming villages within reach without a lot of driving, well-stocked supermarket in Casoli, and good beaches on the coast.
Abruzzo is awaiting discovery. Stew & Ruth made our stay richly rewarding.

Inspiring stay at Casa del Fiume, Abruzzo, beautiful house with
The building is very beautiful with lavender color shutters and nice looking comfortable outdoor dining set + lounge chairs. We loved the way Ruth and Stewart were taking care of us, they are very generous with suggestions to have the perfect holiday. Like organizing a wine tasting at a local vineyard with superb wines, organizing a rafting tour, baking fresh bread, cooking lunch, and much more, we felt really special! They think of everything (fresh handpicked flowers, tomatoes from the veg.garden etc).
The wi-fi worked fine, although with the hosts giving all the recommendations we did not need internet ;-). A visit to beautiful Lanciano is nice for shopping. At this house you feel close to nature, the air is so pure. There is a lot to do in the area. We brought our own beach umbrella and chairs, but the apartment comes with this too. This place must be really cozy in winter time as it is comfortable with its big couch to lounge in front of the fire place. It has a beautiful and well equipped kitchen. Liked the decoration of the apartment (Ruth is a painter and we think she has great taste!) + also the fact that the apartment is eco friendly. Will definitely be back to stay in this exceptional place again!

Aaaah - bruzzo
Home from home is such a cliche, but this is what Ruth and Stewart successfully and surpassingly provide. A magnificent view from every window; a menagerie of intriguing individuals and animals ( wild boar optional ); treasure maps that lead to beaches, gellaterias , markets, festas, piazzas, the best coffee shops.; wine tasting with a view...
This maybe self catering but takes "all inclusive" to another level. Thank you

Fantastic. Couldn't wish for better. Can't be faulted.
The house is beautiful - clean, spacious and well equipped. The grounds stretch down to a lovely cooling river. The area is unspoilt Italy with wonderful mountains for those who like hard walks and the beach is within easy driving distance. The hilltop villages are amazing.
What really makes this location special is the help and friendship of the owners Stewart and Ruth. They make so much effort to make your holiday special. I have never before stayed anywhere where the owners give so much to their guests.
San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Italy
Our stay at Ruth and Stewart's apartment in abruzzo was amazing. The apartment is large and very comfortable with a large couch, indoor and outdoor dining possibilities. Nearby, there is a lot to see and to do. Highlight was the rafting on the river next to the apartment. The landscapes in the area are completely stunning, the food in abruzzo is great and also the beach is not far from the apartment. Ruth and Stewart were both extremely helpful with their tips and maps, which made the stay very personal. Hope to come back there next year.

Beautiful spot- lovely hosts
We had a wonderful week long stay at Casa del Fiume. The house is beautifully decorated with original art work and impeccably clean. The grounds are lovely - you can swim in the aventino River is at the bottom of the garden (though the water is quite cold) and there are hammocks in the trees at the riverside. There is a nice outdoor eating area with a barbecue and the kitchen is well-equipped. The location is ideal for hiking in the Majella park. Ruth and Stew are charming and extremely helpful.

almost like in heaven
- service was excellent, we got a lot of information from the owners
- home was beautiful, very nice furniture, well equipped, lovely beds, modern style combined with originally elements, very clean.
-location is quiet, large garden with beautiful river, nice surroundings, in the neighbourhood of adriatic Sea, not touristical. Very friendly inhabitants.
- our stay was for 100% succesful, not for people with disabilities: the toilet was on the 1st floor.
- Thumb for Stew and Ruth Holland!

If you like to be away from the hustle and bustle, in a rural atmosphere with the sound of the river in the background then this is the place for you.
Space, tranquillity, and a range of walking to suit all levels, plus hill top villages & the coast just a short drive away.
What really makes" la Casa" so special tho', are the charming hosts Ruth and Stew. They know the special places to go and how to get there off the beaten track, and are at hand if and when required to offer suggestions.
They love the area and are at one with the community.
In other words this is not just a money making concern.
By the time we left after just over a week, we felt like we had made new friends.
Thank you Ruth and Stew.
A wonderful holiday that combined relaxation and river rafting.
The service we received was first class with our hosts, Stu and Ruth, on hand but not intrusive.
The holiday home was very comfortable, well equipped and met all our needs.
Located in the abruzzo mountains it had fantastic views, was a short drive to some fantastic walks and less than an hour from the almost deserted beach.
Local knowledge of our hosts made sure we made the best of our time in Italy. Cant think of anything we disliked!
A relaxing week discovering La Maiella
For us, it was a very nice week in Civitella, and although we had some showers, the fresh air in the morning and the views of the still snowed mountains were amazing.
The house is a lovely and neatly restored country house, with two wood burning stoves that not only kept us warm in the chilli nights, but they added a special romatic touch that we enjoyed at night with a glass of wine.
The surroundings are awesome! and the host can provide guides and advice on walks and outdoors activities in the National Park.
We highly reccomend a visit to the Iuvanum (Roman ruins and museum). A taste of italian food (simple but really tasty) is a must do in the 'agriturismo' in Fallascoso.
The hosts, Stewart and Ruth, are great! If you want to know anything about the area, you only have to ask Stewart. He will be able to help you or give you ideas on how to spend a relaxing and interesting holyday in abruzzo. And if you interested in art or design, you will get along with Ruth, who not only has decorated the house very nicely but she is also a great artist.
Beautiful and Quiet Mountain Retreat
This is the exactly the type of accommodation for which I do not want to write a review in fear of the place will become too popular and no longer available when I'll want to rent it gain.
Seriously, we recently stayed for a week in this very comfortable, spacious, well equipped house. The lovely owners of the house (Stew and Ruth) were very helpful and friendly. We will be back!
we had an excellent time there, starting from the warm welcome of the owner ruth, who went out of her assisting us in any way
the house itself is designed in a clean whitish colors, staying there was relaxing and pieceful, I'm sure this feeling is shared by many past quests, I recommend warmly on this place
a generous stay on all accounts!
We had a truly beautiful time here- the surrounding area is stunning to explore and the home and hosts extremely generous and welcoming:)
Very relaxing, i wish i didnt have to leave!
A beautiful riverside base to access a region of majestic beauty
Along with the generous accommodation comes the hosts' generous spirit of sharing local knowledge and tuning into your interests and requirements. In the morning you see the sun hit the mountains and in the evening the river melodies rise to meet you...what more is needed?
Great place & mountains
Nice place and garden, Majella mountains close by, really good home made olive oil, other special places as Iuvanum etc.

Butterflies of Casa del Fiume
The garden of Cas del Fiume is a delightful place for the visiting naturalist. The meadows, scrubby oak woodlands, walnut, fig and plum trees and the river all abound in wildlife. During the week of my visit I was able to wander freely photographing and identifying butterflies as well as other animal life. It was still very hot and sunny and the late summer meadow abundant with scabious and other flowers. Silver-washed and spotted fritillaries, swallowtail, clouded yellow, large skipper, wall, small heath, common blue, brown argus and Lang's short-tailed blue together with sooty and small coppers and a variety of whites fluttered back and forth feeding on the flowers. Further wanderings, by the river, added sightings of Queen of Spain fritillary, pearly heath, Provencal short-tailed blue, southern white admiral, purple hairstreak, Oberthurs grizzled skipper, mallow skipper and wood white. In the woodland and under the avenue of black walnuts great banded and woodland grayling flew past alighting on the tree trunks and ground. In total I recorded 29 different butterflies during two or three trips round the garden. No doubt at other times of the year the garden will be equally rewarding and perhaps as many as 70 or so species could be seen through the year. Not bad when the region itself is reputed to support around 116 different butterflies.
Lizards are abundant in the garden including the impressive green lizard, edible frogs bask on the river's edges and bats were seen at night. I also noted during my garden rambles the four spotted footman moth and various smaller moths on flowers and at light. Praying mantids should also get a mention as they were relatively easy to find in the meadow and could also be seen flying up and down the river's edge. Many other impressive bush crickets and grasshoppers also haunt the meadows. A wonderful spot in which to enjoy the wildlife before retiring to a hammock for a cold beer.
Wonderful mountain retreat
The nicest self-catering house I have stayed in by far. A beautifully decorated house with a wonderful garden down to the river. I wished we'd booked longer, because there was more to see in the area and I'd have also happily spent more time just in the garden by the river.
Situated in a great area for both mountain and coast and all the lovely little towns and villages inbetween. We had a wonderful walk up the gorge at Fara San Martino with stunning views over the countryside to the sea and hardly another soul to be seen all day. Also we had a lovely visit to the Trabocchi coast for a swim where the sea was blue and warm, and again only a handful of other people were on the beach. The fishing piers are a beautiful and striking addition to the coastline and the visit to the nearby war cemetary was quite humbling.
The owners of the house (Stew and Ruth) were both lovely and very helpful, recommending wonderful places to see and go to eat and giving great directions to get to places (the abruzzo map we had didn't have enough detail to find everywhere easily).
I would thoroughly recommend a visit - but don't pick any weeks I want to go!

Marvellous week in a beautiful house.
Our week at Casa del Fiume was a delight. The house is very comfortable, spacious, well equiped, and imaculate. The gardens and river are beautiful and a tranquil setting to relax in with lovely scenary. Stew and Ruth are perfect hosts, full of imformation about things to do and see in the area which has lots of interest for everyone, they made us feel very welcome and we will definately be aiming for a return visit.

Zwei wunderbare entspannte Wochen

Beautiful house in tranquil location, spectacular scenery
We have just returned from a 16 night stay at Casa del Fiume. I really can't fault the house, it was spacious and elegant and the children loved the cool river. Stewart and Ruth were great hosts, arranging a local English speaking guide who took us on an unforgettable walk up the mountains, and inviting us to join them for a lunch with friends by the river another day. Both memories we will treasure. We took two half day art lessons from Ruth which has inspired us, particularly our 14 yr old son who is taking Gcse art. We found there were plenty of activities for the family to enjoy - a trip to the Cavallone caves is a must and we went to several local fiestas. Ruth and Stewart's recommended beach was superb and only a 40 minute drive from the house; we also used the local pool at Lama only a 15 min drive away, it was very clean and is in a wonderful setting just beneath the mountains. Eating out was inexpensive and very good, ice cream irresistible!
Portland, OR, USA
Really nice place, lovely hosts
We had a very nice time at Stew and Ruth's place. The space is large, clean, private, and well equipped/furnished. The location is out-of-the-way, but easy driving distance to many towns, touristic sites, and to both the coast and to the mountains. I loved having the river there; just the sound of it was lovely, and one hot day I dunked myself and that was very refreshing. Ruth and Stew are helpful and friendly but also give you plenty of privacy. We recommend it!
Great mountain retreat
A beautiful renovated house in an idyllic setting. Beautifully furnished + all modcons, all of which work. Very hospitable hosts who provide all the assistance, information and advice one could hope for.
Response from Stewart Holland - 07/27/2011
Review from a very nice man from the Netherlands. Approved.
Blissfully quiet retreat in magnificent landscape
A wonderful place. The house is spacious, comfortable and stylishly decorated (with perfect wi-fi), while the vast garden is an idyllic spot -- great for an idle hammock nap or game of table-tennis on the afternoons you don't feel like exploring. Stewart and Ruth are friendly and superbly well-informed hosts, full of local knowledge that you wouldn't otherwise find. Abruzzo is an amazing region still unspoiled by the tourist trade -- the house is nestled in the extraordinarily lush mountain region, but beautiful, secluded swimming beaches are just a short drive away.
Super Woche, super Haus, sehr nette Vermieter
Beautiful abruzzian house and very friendly owners!
We were so lucky to rent such a lovely house with such friendly owners! Casa del fiume combines the ambiance of an original abruzzian house with the comfort and the accommodation of modern architecture. Ruth and Stewart gave us a hearty welcome! They showed us a typical Italian market in a little town with a medieval centre, they showed us their favourite ice cream parlour and they went with us to their favourite beach.
In this one week we made many beautiful experiences. So we visited several authentic little towns (Casoli, Lanciano, Vasto), we were at the beach, we were in the river (the temperature was very refreshing!), we went for two long walks in the mountains of Maiella and we enjoyed our evenings on the terrace behind the house with vine, olives, cheese, guitar music ...
We're looking forward to come back soon!

Delightful house and location
Casa del Fiume was a joy to stay in. The accommodation is light, airy, thoughtfully equipped and tastefully decorated. Stew and Ruth, the owners who live next door, were charming hosts and recommended many places to visit. They provided us with their own olive oil - absolutely fab - and vegetables from their garden. The abruzzo is an amazing, relatively unknown area of Italy - hilltop villages, rugged unspoilt countryside and quiet beaches and best of all hardly any tourists. Thank you Stew and Ruth.
juste wonderful stewart and ruth were so lovely and they know the area like italian people, they make your holiday memorable and with out any wrong note
they give you theirs best adress where you can find the best product made in abruzzo food cloth and antiquity
I remember the best small market i see in my life (guardigrale)
for who like food and cook it's like paradise
the house have a full equipment to made every thing
and the bed my god i would like the same in my house
thank you again for every things and all the best to Stewart and ruth
Peaceful, attractive location with helpful owners
Having been welcomed by the endlessly friendly and helpful (but never interfering) owners we enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing and comfortable week in this lovely location. A beautifully decorated and comfortably furnished house with delightful views and an excellent river running through the grounds, Case del Fiume was also an ideal centre for exploring historic abruzzo and the Majella National Park. The attractive adriatic coast is also easily accessible less than an hour's drive away, as are the shrines at Manoppello and Lanciano.
Great hosts and beautiful house
We stayed for 3 nights in March. It was very cold but Ruth and Stewart suplied us with plenty of wood and luckily we had electric blankets. The house is well equipped, kitchen simple but functional. We had a baby with us and really the only bad point is the very steep stairs up to the room and no cot or highchair provided. Everything else was fantastic and I would definately stay here again. Maybe in the summer though!

Warmth on a winter's eve.
Arrived on a cold evening in January, to be welcomed by two roaring fires and a very warm welcome. Tasteful, comfortable home. Very brief visit this time but will certainly return. Great couple who treat you more like friends than customers.

Glorious time in abruzzo!
You could not ask for more gracious hosts than Stewart and Ruth. We stayed over New Year's and had a very memorable time, including a fireworks display and lovely treats with them at midnight. We were charmed by the house's refined, rustic decor and many cozy amenities (including electric blankets for brisk winter nights). And while we enjoyed exploring the beautiful environs in winter, we plan to return to experience its bounty in summer. Thank you so much for a wonderful start to the New Year!
While visiting a dear friend from the abruzzo region, she told us about the amazing Casa del Fiume as a recommended place to stay. The hosts Ruth and Stewart have a true appreciation for the area and the community, and this was wonderful to see. You cannot ask for a more perfect setting - mountains, sea, spectacular nature, food that makes you cry it's so fresh, and the pure unspoiled beauty of the villages. Coming from Milan/New York, this was paradise for us. The house was exquisite - beautifully designed, comfortable, and fully equipped. We loved being welcomed by our hosts, the local cats, and the warm fireplaces. We will be back, hopefully again and again. Many thanks for the wonderful stay. Alison and Christian
excellent accommodation if your looking to get away from it all for a bit.

A very special place !
This is a wonderful place to spend a holiday. The website is an excellent first taste of the stay ahead, with photos and virtual tour and more. The house is impeccable - clean, comfortable, airy, tastefully restored and decorated with flair. We loved this unspoiled part of Italy with its pure, unpolluted air, and dramatic landscapes : sea, mountains, old perched villages. The owners are so helpful and thoughtful and ever-ready to recommend restaurants, markets and places of interest to make your stay memorable. We returned home completely revitalised. Thank you Stewart and Ruth !
Relaxing Rural Retreat
I always want to check a review of where I'm considering staying before I book but at the time this was not available. However, I was persuaded by Stew's excellent website and I was not disappointed. If you are looking for a rural retreat set in some spectacular countryside with friendly, generous & helpful hosts, look no further.
Casa del Fiume is set on a quiet road in a rural hamlet. It is only 10-15 minutes drive from the nearest small towns and approx 50 minutes from the sea but you will need a car. The house and location are as lovely as the website shows, so I'll let Stew's pictures do the talking. The locals are all friendly and, as we went during the august fiesta season, we quickly felt part of the community.
Our trip was part pleasure, part business. Stew has many contacts and was able to put us in touch with reliable lawyers and estate agents. He was also able to provide interpretation services, which was a huge boon. His wife Ruth is an accomplished professional artist and we were able to commission some delightful portraits of our two children.
We had a lovely time at Casa del Fiume. We have come away with some very special memories of a very special holiday hosted by two very special people. Thank you Stew and Ruth.

absolutely bliss peacefullness and tranquility
We stayed at Casa Del Fiume for one week in august. The house is divine and the rooms are huge. They look smaller in the pictures. The decor was lovely and it was relaxing and also spacious as we travelled with my parents, we never felt like we were on top of each other.
The hammocks by the river were great as were the stunnng views from the bedroom windows.
You need a car. Lots of lovely towns and places to see nearby. Not far to the beach or the ski resort which was lovely. The owners are great. They live next door and gave us invaluable information. They were so warm and welcoming, witing outside when we arrived and waving us off at the end of the holiday. They gave us some of their own olive oil and vegetables from their garden.
If you want a peaceful and beautiful location then this is 100% exactly that. We are going to book for next year as soon as we know our holiday plans.
Beautiful, calm home in rural setting with unsurpassed hosts
This is just bliss - a better holiday home you couldn't find and the hosts who live next door are one-in-a-million. Beautiful area, beautiful scenery and when you lie in a hammock by the river you never, ever forget it.
St Andrews, Fife, Scotland
The best, most magical, fun place with wonderful people!
This is the best, most enjoyable place I've stayed in Italy. The house was beautifully decorated, fresh, clean, well equiped and so comfortable with everything one could wish for. My host and hostess for wonderful! Very friendly, kind and thoughtful. Providing me with lots of helpful tips and information, not to mention having me to supper on the night I arrived. They soon became great friends with whom I shared many adventures and great times. Their knowledge of the area was really helpful and our visit to the local markets not only fun but well worthwhile.
I would not hesitate to recommend this lovely place to anyone wanting to get to know this area of abruzzo.
Relaxing stay in undiscovered area
This place is really charming. It's half of an old house, very nicely - and recently - converted and stylishly furnished. It has some pleasant outside space, and, because of the thickness of the walls and the orientation, a kind of naturally air-conditioned effect: if you leave the shutters closed during the day, it remains beautifully cool. Stewart and Ruth are extremely welcoming hosts, who care a lot about their guests' experience at the house, and are very enthusiastic and informed about the area. Abruzzo feels very undiscovered compared with Umbria or even the Marche, and there are some fabulous things within the immediate area of the house. There's a great walk up a truly spectacular gorge at Fara S. Martino (if you don't mind climbing over landslip debris to get to it), and a wonderful Roman site on a hilltop nearby (Iuvanum). More prosaically, there's a very good wireless connection at the house for those who find it hard to leave their work behind.
Geoff & Sheila
The people are delightful, the scenery is spectacular, the food is good and it is all inexpensive. No tourists or tourist tat. Stewart and Ruth are excelent hosts, friendly, helpful and full of local knowledge. Beautiful hilltop towns and villages with the adriatic half an hour away and, in winter, nearby skiing resorts. We arrived after a week in Tuscany and it was like entering a different country.
