We loved our stay, and hope to return.
The appartment is lovely.Very well equipped-our hosts could not have been more friendly or helpful. The pool is excellent, and it was so nice to have such a generous starter pack to greet us.We loved the hens!!

Excellent as always
A big thank you to Barbara and Richard for making our stay so enjoyable again. The welcome hamper was just what we needed after a long journey. The villa is fully equipped with everything that you could need and Cigalle now boasts a superb sound system. The pool is kept beautifully clean and the surrounding terrance provides peace and tranquillity and plenty of space to relax and enjoy the sunshine.
We look forward to our next visit.
Le Grand Hermitage is such a hidden gem, just simply beautiful! What an amazing writers' hideaway! Barbara and Richard are terrific hosts with great knowledge of the region and wonderful suggestions on local dining. What a little piece of heaven! Not only did we receive a lovely welcome picnic basket when we arrived, the villa was well stocked with wine. What a treat to find fresh eggs at our front door in the morning! We really enjoyed seeing the little henny pennies/the girls in the garden, so cute! We can't wait to go back.

Very Highly Recommeded villa in Clermont' l'Herault
We loved the place and would recommend it without hesitation! Several times during our stay, we said "We could live here!" That is how comfortable the space was. We definitely plan to return and hope to bring friends, as it is ideally suited for folks who want to be together and yet have their private space. There are so many positives and they include, but are not limited to:
First class welcome basket! The shrimp, smoked salmon, cheeses, bread, quiche, fruit...perfect choices to get us started.
The bathroom was top rate. The shower was a pleasure to use and there was thoughtful space for storing toiletries.
The bed was very comfortable, the linens wonderful, and the storage space in the bedroom was great.
The kitchen was lovely and very easy to use. The layout was perfect and we loved the antique chopping block in the middle. We quickly understood that we didn't want to sit a wine glass in the wrong place (!), but we loved the little "island."
The outdoor space was inviting and we enjoyed it to the fullest every day! While americans are a bit "whimpy" when it comes to water temperature, the view of the pool was nice.
We became attached to "the girls." (Three chickens who roam the property during the day.) Hope they enjoyed the parting snack we left!
We really appreciated having "on sight" management. Barbara and Richard are a first class act!
the big macs
peaceful, beautiful, away from it all
what a find! Barbara and Richard have thought of everything, from the picnic left the day we arrived to the bathroom facilities and the layout of the outside space - private enough to eat out and think you are the only ones there!

Don't tell anyone but it's simply perfect!
Perfect hosts wonderfully friendly, always helpful whilst at the sametime being respectful of your privacy. Perfect accomodation elegantly and tastefully furnished with amazing attention to detail.Perfect for relaxing in comfort with your every need catered for both inside and out. Perfect location for exploring the lovely Languedoc. It's truly the first time that our expectations have been exceeded!
But we are reluctant to say too much more as we don't want spoil your surprise and in truth find it too difficult to book and return again!

The perfect holiday!
If you are looking for peace and relaxation in a lovely location then this is a great place to go.
Barbara and Richard have created a rather lovely holiday home. The house has all you will need and some more! The picnic and wine on arrival was thoughtful and most welcome. They were the perfect hosts who were helpful and also respectful of our privacy.Really enjoyed hen watching! Such characters and the fresh eggs were delicious. There are decent quality mountain bikes with the rental. The local area has many quiet roads and fabulous views, some roads more challenging with steep hills, others gentle and rolling.A dip in the swimming pool was great after a long cycle ride. Dining at La Source in nearby Villeneuvette is a must. Also recommend tapas and wine in the quirky little cafe in the same village.
Le Grande Hermitage does not disappoint, it lives up to it's photographs. Hope to go back there again!

One of the best weeks of our lives - so far!
We were looking for a romantic getaway in the sun, away from the stress of everyday life but what we got was so much more than that! The villa was very special and the view from our bedroom window stunning (made more so sat in the roll-top bath overlooking the vines, decadence itself!). Attention to detail was amazing and it was these little touches that took this place from ordinary to extraordinary...you need to visit yourself to discover them! Surrounded by the smell of lavender around the lovely pool, friendly bees bouncing off it, the constant noise of the cicadas in the trees (but nothing else!) the occasional cluck of one of the chickens visiting - this is definitely a little piece of heaven here on earth! The bonus of the whole experience was the wonderful English couple Barbara and Richard who run Le Grand Hermitage - discreet but always on hand should you need them (and great fun!). We can't wait to go back and share their lovely home once more!
Superb in every respect!
We spent 10 days in Papillon in Le Grand Hermitage and were delighted with the quality of accommodation, attention to detail and the genuinely warm welcome we received. The owners were attentive but never intrusive and have created the ideal holiday retreat. The picnic waiting for us on arrival, wine selection in the villa (locally sourced ,of good quality and well priced)and many other individual touches make this accommodation comfortable, stylish and elegant. This is a fantastic place to totally rest and relax but with lots of places to visit within short driving distances.
A lovely villa with beautiful views
I can still smell the lavender in my bag
What I needed to give me some rest and to try to forget at least for a while my heartache

A relaxing break in lovely countryside
Le Grand Hermitage certainly lived up to our expectations, the accommodation is to a very high stanadrd and its the little touches that made it special. These include hand made soaps and monogrammed pillow cases ! It is situated in a lovely spot about 5 mins drive into Clermont L'Herault. There is a lovelt restaurant about a 20 mins stroll away through vinyards and a copse. The owners are on hand is you need them but are not intrusive. All in all a great break.

Lovely, well appointed villa, great location & hosts.
Visited from Canada & loved this couples oasis.
Beautifully built & decorated with special gardens.
Great location for culture, dining & cycling.
We did a `Pause Parfait` with Richard which was an excellent day out in the Jag - wine tasting, lunch & sailing.
Barbara also did us a gourmet meal one evening with fresh local fare.
Hope to be back for longer.

A very special place to stay
We stayed here for a couple of lovely nights in april. The place is luxurious, but not in a deluxe, anodyne way - it feels homely too. Everything has been judged to perfection -with loving care but also with a professional finesse. Characterful without being idiosyncratic, spacious and somewhat grand but intimate and cosy too, glamorous but also rustic and earthy. We were picked up from the bus staion, and returned there at the end of our trip. We were greeted with large plates of salmon and sea food - all freshly cooked with sides too, and a bottle of rose. Our apartment had a piano with tons of sheet music. The chickens came to our door to chat occasionally (or was that to ingratiate for food?) and they rewarded us with eggs for breakfast. We were there to walk and the celebrated Cirque de Moureze is a healthy hike away.
Bob & Andrea
My wife and I stayed at Le Grand Hermitage for 8 nights (4 nights in Cigale and 4 nights in Papillion) and loved every minute. The welcome picnic was fantastic, the local grapes are something else. The villas are wonderfully secluded and romantic. Most evenings we had barbeque and vin rouge. And in the mornings enjoyed omlette courtesy of the resident hens. In summary, we had a great time and can't wait to go back.

Great base to explore this fantastic area out of season
Last year we visited the Nice area in February and enjoyed it so much we thought we'd come back, this time a bit further south. Ryan air fly from Bristol to Beziers which is ideal for us and we found a great place near Clermont L'herault right in the middle of the region. Le Grand Hermitage leaves you wanting for nothing. It is fully furnished and even had sky tv, a piano and guitar. The weather was warm enough to sit by the pool and relax in this very peaceful place. At night it chilled off as you would expect but the log burner provided adequate heat. Barbara and Richard left us a great little hamper to start us off so we didn't have to worry about food until the next day. Supermarkets are close by and we bought and cooked most days due to the high costs of eating out (not just a French problem but Europe wide except for the UK). We had a car but walking into town was pleasant and we enjoyed the market on Wednesdays. Make sure you visit in the mornings as they rush off at 12! We usually hire a car when we are away so we can explore. The benefits of visiting in February are that wherever you go you practically have the places to yourself free of the hoards of tourists that swamp the area in summer. We went up to Millau, the Gorges of Tarn, West to the foothills of the Pyrenees, east to the Pont Du Gard and south along the beaches on the coast. Obviously at this time of year many of the tour operators are shut but we just like to see things so it was not a problem for us. There are also some great drives close by Clermont L'herault through gorges if you like drives with big drops to the side! If you want to relax and also see a lot of the area we'd really recommend a trip in February.
Beryl and Rambo!
A very pleasant stay with kind, helpful and welcoming hosts.
Although it was a cold winter my 2 month stay was warm and very comfortable. My dog and I were warmly welcomed and good advice and help was often given. It was a pleasure staying in Le Grand Hermitage - the area was delightful - the local people also. A very many thanks.

Beautiful location & Accommodation
We stayed at the Le Grand Hermitage august 201. The accommodation was stylishly laid out with all comforts for this modern day world. The kitchen area had everything we could possibly require on holiday and the upstairs was lovely even down to the touch of having our initials on the bedlinen on arrival and the lovely fresh luxury toiletries. A selection of wine was left for guests to try and obviously pay for but it was good to try the Simpson-Birks choice (a lovely couple). The villas were ideal to share with friends which we did and worked out idea for us all. The location was excellent: close enough to shops/markets to get retails therapy, close enough to lovely harbours and lakes to canoe on. So everyone was catered for. Lovely hosts/lovely weather/lovely food and a great time had by all. Highly recommended! So much so we have already booked for 2011.
Perfect base in a superb area
This was a perfect base for the autumn month I spent discovering a superb part of 'real' France. The house is very comfortable and well-appointed to a high standard. The area is fantastic for hiking in the deep gorges of Haut Languedoc and in the mysterious 'cirque de Moureze'. The hosts are very welcoming and helpful with things like finding the best local wines or places to eat or shop. A perfect base for a great holiday.
Perfect in every way
My husband and I stayed at Le Grand Hermitage for four weeks in October. We arrived to find a beautiful one bedroom house with wonderful amenities. It was spacious and comfortable enough for us to live as a permanent home. He kitchen was equipped with everything needed to cook, and we loved the claw-footed bathtub located next to the French doors which overlooked the vineyard. Barbara and Richard, the owners, greeted us with a picnic supper and were great with suggestions of restaurants and interesting sites in the area. During our stay they arranged several outings, such as a wine tasting and a sailing trip, with Richard acting as chauffeur. Located just half hour from both the Mediterranean and the mountains, we could site-see and return early to have a nap or sit in the sun. It was a best vacation ever, and we hope to return next year.
A perfect break
When you have little time every holiday has to be perfect: relaxing, friendly, wonderful food, lots to do and above all else a great place to stay. I can, hand on heart, say Le Grand Hermitage was all of these things and more. Albeit a short break this time, if felt like we had been away for ages, so imagine our eagerness to stay there even longer! Thank you Barbara and Richard for your generous hospitality.
A pecial place for our first holiday together
Our week at Le Grand Hermitage was the first holiday that we had spent together. We had a wonderful time and the accommodation was comfortable, well appointed and with an elegant French feel. Our hosts were charming, very welcoming and made us feel really at home. They were there if we needed them but never intruded. The picnic on arrival was perfect and just what we needed. It was a fantastic base to explore the locality. A must is a visit to the market at Clemont Herault. We would recommend a days canoe trip down the Herault River from St Georges Le Desert (George the Pud), that was a special day - a gentle paddle, some little rapids and the chance to swim in the river and St George itself is well worth a visit. We loved our week at Le Grand Hermitage and we will come back again one day

Pure Rest and Relaxation
We had an absolutely fabulous week at Le Grand Hermitage; We were met on arrival with a bottle of wine and a superb buffet for our first evening meal.
The villa was provided with everything that you could possibly want, from bathrobes, shampoo and conditioner to bikes, good reading material and a solar heated pool. Barbara and Richard were excellent and knowledgeable hosts, available when you wanted them with plenty of ideas, suggestions and answers to any questions you may have.
The villa overlooks vineyards and so is very peaceful whilst Clermont Herault is just a short drive away where you find practically every amenity you need including a great market on Wednesday mornings. Drive a little further and there is cosmopolitan Montpellier, further again and there is the wonderful Pont du Gard, well worth a visit.
Everything is laid on for you on arrival, you can arrive and not need to think about having brought anything in particular since it is all there for you. The thing we liked least? That we only had a week to spend there.

A little bit of paradise
We stayed here for two weeks in august. Easy to find, close to a small town with a large supermarket, olive oil co-operative and fantastic weekly market, Le Grand Hermitage lies in a quiet and peaceful location, surrounded by vineyards. Barbara and Richard were welcoming, friendly but discreet hosts. The accommodation was spacious and comfortable and we appreciated the little things, like the welcome picnic and the monogrammed pillowcases, which made things feel that little bit more special. The garden was a haven, with shady nooks for reading in the afternoon sun, as well as plenty of loungers for basking in full sunlight, while the troupe of hens made for entertaining company. We always looked forward to a dip in the pool after returning from a day out, for there is so much of interest to see so close by (even Nimes is only an hour or so away). Sharing the site with the neighbouring gite is no problem - they are designed so you can be as sociable or as private as you want. All in all, the warm welcome and the high standards set by Barbara and Richard at Le Grand Hermitage helped to make this the most relaxing holiday we have had.

Ashby de la Zouch
luxury in the Languedoc
I love it when you go on holiday and the place you are staying is even better than the photo's! Le Grand Hermitage is one of the best places we have ever stayed - the house itself was beautiful with everything you could ever need. Barbara and Richard have a very good eye for detail (right down to the pillowcases - you have to stay to see what I mean). I would recommend this house to anyone who wants to stay in the Languedoc - it is lovely and peaceful and yet only a 15 minute walk (or 5 minute bike ride) to a restaurant so you have the best of both worlds.
Malcolm and Pam Stephenson
From start [wonderful picnic] to finish [unhurried departure] it was a superb holiday. Clement l'Herault and the village of Villeneuvette [with La Source restaurant] are a stone's throw away. Le Grand Hermitage is a great base to visit the Herault or to simply stay and chill out, or more likely a combination of both. It is a very romantic venue, and with children having flown the nest, we appreciated the adult environment, the quality of the accommodation and the serenity. The chickens were an amusing distraction. Ryanair was also very efficient in getting us to and from Beziers. We couldn't have asked for more - maybe another week? We don't want to give away too much as we hope to go back next year, if not later this year.
Thankyou Barbara and Richard for your hospitality.
Pam and Malcolm Stephenson, Stratford-upon-Avon.
Matt & Emily Davies
We had a lovely holiday in the very comfortable Le Grand Hermitage. The inside of the gite is just as we imagined from the photos. Outside, the freshwater pool is great & there is lots of garden space to stretch out. There's a BBQ & outdoor table for food.
Barbara & Richard are great; one night per week they offer to cook a wonderful dinner if you want some company, but mostly they're out of sight. It's a very peaceful setting, even the chickens have the best interests of guests at heart!
A good location, close to Lac du Salagou and well positioned for Montpellier or the coast. But you'll need a car, the smaller towns around Herault have more to offer than Clermont L'herault itself.
Would we go back again? Absolutely!

Our perfect honeymoon idyll
Barbara and Richard really know how to make people feel welcome. They've thought of everything to make the houses feel homely but extra special, even down to the pillow slips sporting our initials and the welcome picnic. The house was clean and really well equipped. Our garden was well secluded and the pool was a beautiful relief from the hot July days (and nights!) When we eventually dragged ourselves away from the pool and garden we were able to follow up a few of Richard and Barbara's recommended restaurants and visits - they must have enjoyed compiling the very well researched information pack!
The only aspect of Le Grand Hermitage that could be improved is the arrangements for payment. This can only be done via international bank transfer which incurs an extra charge for the customer. It would also be more straightforward if the deposit was refunded in the same currency and by the same means as it was paid.
However - these technical details do not detract from the incredible time we had at Le Grand Hermitage. We felt thoroughly looked after and utterly spoilt in our French idyll. Barbara and Richard have done an amazing job with the houses, garden and pool and should be proud of the romantic hideaway they've created. We have every intention of returning. Thank you!
Peaceful and relaxing in a very charming location.
Richard and Barbara made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Relaxation is what we wanted and that is what we most certainly got!
The garden in front of each villa allows for space, but also privacy due to the plethora of plants, herbs and greenery growing around the periphery.
The villa was more than comfortable with a very well equipped kitchen and a good feel of space.
The chickens wandering around during the daytime added their own character.
The property is situated in a good location. Set in the countryside but near the town and amenities. the house is furnished to a high standard and very comfortable.

A magical return visit
We enjoyed Le GH so much in 2009, that we returned for 3weeks this year. It worked its magic again and despite having 10 days of unseasonably poor weather, we thoroughly enjoyed the comfort, ambience and facilities offered. The garden with its sweetly scented jasmine, solarnum, roses etc is a joy. Looking after the hens while Richard & Barbara were away was entertaining and the eggs truly welcome.. Taking the bicycles down to the Canal du Midi is a continuing treat and the vineyard tour arranged by Richard & Barbara was enjoyable and informative.
This is a lovely place to stay - a real gem and Richard & Barbara are excellent hosts who, whilst being helpful and interestingly entertaining, are not intrustive.

High standard accomodation in beautiful surroundings
For some years we have been taking holidays in SW France and have been looking for quality self catering accommodation with pool and gardens, but finding somewhere just for 2 has until now, proved impossible. The house was exactly as described in the alastair Sawday book and we knew immediately that it was jsut what we needed to have a relaxing holiday and to be able to live the French way of life which we love, swimming cycling and buying food from the markets. We were exhasusted when we arrived but this is a hugely restorative place to be with bird song and butterflies in the lovely gardens, thoughtfully planted with different areas to sit, lounge or BBQ.However, we were hugely unlucky with the weather, have never known it to rain in June and it was disappointing. However, we loved it so much and it is so perfect for the kind of holiday that we love, that we have booked to go back again next year, hopefully to find the sun as usual.
Extremely relaxing 4 weeks - to be repeated
We felt at home the moment we arrived, when Richard and Barbara@s smiling faces greeted us as we drove up to the house, through the rain. The house immediately felt like home (although physically nothing like our own house in UK), and the meal produced by Barbara on the first evening was superb! The house, just outside Clermont l'Herault, has wonderful views across vineyards to wooded valleys and hills. It took us about 45 minutes to walk to town, and about 10 minutes to drive to the local supermarkets (HyperU, and Intermarche). Plenty of good restaurants and cafes in the town. There was an excellent bus service into nearby towns eg Montpellier, which saved problems with parking. Good walking country, with breathtaking views in the National Park area.
Richard and Barbara were very kind hosts and managed to combine discreet invisibility with being available when we wished to ask them something.
We both hope to return next year, and maybe the weather will be a little kinder!

Expedition to France
House hunting in France had to begin somewhere, and Le Grand Hermitage was a very pleasant and easy introduction. Plenty of good local advice paid dividends and the house was well equipped and comfortable. All the local amenities you could wish for were within walking distance, as Le Grand Hermitage is located in a quiet secluded area on the outskirts of Clermont L'herault overlooking rolling hills and vines.

A very warm welcome on arrival, which made one feel at home straight
away. The owners were genuinely nice people, hospitable, knowledgeable
of the area and maintained that fine balance of discretion and friendliness
throughout our stay. The meal we had with them was excellent and rather
like dining with old friends.
Le Grande Hermitage is a stunning property set in a rural location which
offered tranquility and comfort. We were fortunate to be there at harvest
time which resulted in a lot of activity in the vineyards. The house was well
furnished, complete with a full wine rack for us to enjoy and had all the
facilities one would want.
The property is about a 5 minute drive to Clermont l'Herault where there is
a good range of shops and restaurants.
The location was ideal for exploring the wine regions of the Languedoc, the
many small villages of the area and the rich and varied landscape.
In conclusion our stay at Le Grande Hermitage provided us with an excellent
Pam & Phil
When we arrived the hosts were most welcoming and a small picnic hamper along with a bottle of wine was waiting for us in the villa so we didn't have to prepare a meal after a long journey from the ferry. The villa was beautifully furnished and the kitchen well equipped. The bedroom was devine with a rolltop bath positioned by the window so you could relax in the bath in the sunshine with your gin and tonic and relax. The shower room was lovely with beautifully fragrant soap, shampoo, shower gel and body lotion at your disposal.
Outside the country side was lovely and peaceful. You could sit in the garden on the relaxers sipping the local rose or be a bit more energetic and take a dip in the pool. The beaches were only 45 mins away. There was plenty to see around the area including the cirque de Moreze, Montpellier, Pezenas, St Guilhem le Desert and the marche de Clermont L'Herault. If you like walking there are plenty of paths to follow over the hills. We found the villa so relaxing that within a week of returning home we booked to return in 2010.

A warm welcome from Barbara (and a hamper of goodies!) set the tone for the rest of our stay. As a same sex couple, we felt completely welcome, at ease and relaxed. The gite and setting is beautiful, comfortable, and smart. I loved the bath in the bedroom which looks out across fields of vines against the backdrop of beautiful hills. Really rustic French France. And the pool is just glorious, like an oasis. Loved the chance to have dinner cooked if we wanted. Loved the walk to Villeneuvette. Now we know there is another gites available if we want it, next time we come, we may book both and take another couple. Great base to explore from, but equally wonderful place to stay and relax and read, and swing in the hammocks. Highly recommended!

Sshhh - can you keep a secret - this place is THAT special
Sshh - come closer - can you keep a secret. Le Grand Hermitage is all you would want it to be - gorgeous and romantic. Beautifully designed, decorated, furnished and presented with wonderful attention to detail - from lavender on personally initialled pillowcases to delicious picnic hamper -all awaiting your arrival.
There is plenty to do in the surrounding area (that is if you can tear yourself away from the pool with its flowers and butterflies) - try taking the bikes down to the Canal du Midi and cycle along the towpath for miles - its lovely.
Barbara and Richard are delightful, warm and friendly hosts - welcoming yet unobtrustive - quite an art. Dinner with them is a delicious treat - as is the whole place.
Le Grand Hermitage is very special - but sshhh, don't tell too many - it is THAT special.

A fantastic start to our Honeymoon!
Cannot recommend Le Grand Hermitage highly enough. The Villa was beautifully decorated and so much thought and attention had gone into all the mod cons required to make it a wonderful stay. these included dressing gowns, use of 2 bikes, DVDs, CD player and fantastically equipped kitchen and lounge. The property was very romantic and secluded with an amazing view over a vineyard and woodland area.
We stayed for 5 days but could happily of stayed for much longer....
Magical Romantic Escapism
From first sight you know this is a real 'find'. As you walk through the archway with heavy oak doors, you step into 'The dream'.
Warmly greated by Barbara and Richard, your hosts, the stresses of the 'real world' just slip away. Before long you may find yourselves sitting by the beautiful pool, surrounded by the scents and the peace of rural France, with a glass in your hand and the soft gentle breezes welcoming you to this little haven.
Step inside your 'Gite' and you instantly feel welcome and at home. Cool in the summer, warm and snug in the winter with the roaring woodburner adding to the intimate atmosphere R and B have created. Very French, very romantic and if you are lucky you may persuade Richard to play the piano, creating even more magic in this very special place.
So much thought has gone into every aspect of the design of the Gite. Perfectly done to enhance the enjoyment of your stay. To relax and soak in the 'stately' bath, looking out over the French countryside is to be highly recommended.
There is so much to do here, vineyards and historic villages and cities to visit. Beautiful walks, wonderful restaurants and so much more. Or of course you could just relax and enjoy everything within Le Grand Hermitage - It really is so very easy to do!!
All in all the perfect place to enjoy.
I couldn?t recommend this beautiful Languedoc countryside retreat more!
Coming from the airport to Le Grand Hermitage, I became more and more excited as we drove our way into the beautiful countryside surrounded by vines and hills. As we pulled up to the villa I honestly couldn?t believe it, shutters, jasmine and an archway into the secluded garden with heated pool. It didn?t stop there. As we entered into our villa, Barbara (the owner), had left us a picnic basket full of what should be called the best of France! A beautiful red wine (of which we brought 3 bottles!) cheese, olive oil, homemade lavender soap, cherries, French bread and a stunning lavender cream I found out Barbara had made that day.
The villa was lovely inside, all French furniture in whites and creams. Our room had a balcony over looking the garden and surrounding vineyards. A bath tub in the room so you could look at the view! I can recommend that with a glass of the red wine from the basket, so relaxing! We had pillow cases embroidered with our initials (such a lovely touch) which we brought before when we left.
Restaurants: A short walk from the villa, past the vines and though a wooded area, with the largest pine cones I have ever seen. Was a lovely little restaurant called La Source, I can highly recommend it. The food was beautiful and the village it is situated in is something your eyes can hardly believe. We ate one night with the owners, Barbara and Richard over looking the pool. The food was divine, fresh sushi, duck and fruit kebabs for dessert! You can leave them little cards to say if you want to eat with them or have breakfast in the morning - so lazy but so relaxing.
You do need to hire car if you want to explore. We took a drive to the surrounding areas, a definite is Marseillan port, Montpellier was incredible but one to miss is Lodeve, a grubby little town that seemed like it was constantly closed. overall we had a great time and will be back to buy more wine!
Holiday amongst the vines
We had a lovely week staying in Le Grande Hermitage last year. The gite was well appointed and in a fabulous location. My memories of the holiday were of sitting by the pool under the flower scented pergola having sundowners and of lying in the bath looking through open windows and seeing rolling hills and fields of vines. The weather at the beginning of the week was quite cool so it was great to end the day beside the cosy wood burner. By the end of the week it was scorching and great to just hang out in the peace of the garden.
Le Very Grande Hermitage
We had a delightful week in the warm, early summer sun. Le Grande Hermitage is beautifully situated in a secluded valley, but only minutes from the attractive town of Clermont L'Herault and even nearer to the historic village where the Napoleonic army's uniforms were made! The gites are superbly appointed and luxuriously furnished. There is lots of space for sitting or eating out in the sun with a lovely swiming pool for cooling off. The surrounding area is beautiful with lots of fine restaurants, vineyards good walks and interesting and historic cities towns and villages. All in all a great place for a holday.

The loveliest place we've ever stayed
The property is beautifully designed and built with materials in keeping with the surrounding area.
Inside is stylishly furnished and there's even a piano. The owners provide bath robes, toiletries (including locally made soaps)and high quality bed linen. Relaxing in the roll-top bath, looking out through the open French windows over the vines was a perfect way to start each day.
Outside there are so many places to sit (on steamers/ ironwork chairs/ hammocks, in the sun/shade, breezy or sheltered)and take in the lovely views and smells: lavender, oleander, friendly bees, butterflies, blue skies. And the sparkling pool was 29 degrees.
So a wonderful place to relax, but also an excellent base from which to explore the local area, with many interesting places and lunch venues nearby. Although there are lots of good local restaurants, you should also take Barbara and Richard up on their offer of dinner - great food served between the pool and the vineyard, only a short staggering distance from bed.
very pretty property with beautiful pool and friendly hosts
...we were very well looked after by Barbara and Richard...the welcome basket, the advice and help, a birthday card and even a lift back from a local restaurant on my birthday!
the interior is beautiful - the ground floor very elegant but also comfortable and practical (big table nice sofas etc). The upstairs (the bedroom/bathroom) is very swish and romantic with great views.
we loved the pool area and spent a lot of time there - it feels like you are in a roman villa!
At the time our hosts were living next door (think that's changed now) and as the villas are attached with pool area/garden it wasn't as private as we like so we probably wouldn't return on our own ...only with friends to share the second villa - but it would be great for 2 couples /friends and Clermont is a great base to explore vineyards, the sea - lovely.

Le Grand Hermitage is beautifully located outside a nearby town which has many interesting things to do. I enjoyed the market with its French variety of goods and food. A car is a necessity.
The views over the vineyards were lovely and watching the grapes being gathered an experience I don't get in the UK!. Sitting in the bath and looking out over the fields seemed very decadent.
It was ideal for a romantic get away. The pool was super for a cool dip after the heat of the day. Eating in the garden was so restful.
The service was excellent and the meal I had with the Simpson Birks up to a high standard. The gite was well stocked and thoughtfully prepared.
The best part was the 'getting away from it all'and being able to relax.
What I liked least was not having a bloke to share it with!!!!
Our Idyllic Spring Break.
We are pretty seasoned travellers in "La Belle France", and the Languedoc is one of our favourite destinations, so we looked forward to a good break at Le Grand Hermitage.
Our expectations were well exceeded by such a super, super place.
I could wax lyrical about it's luxury, it's location, it's views, the only problem is that next time we want to book - it might be full!
An outstanding experience
Le Grand Hermitage has to be one on the best places that I have stayed. It achieves a great combination of a relaxed atmosphere yet it is smart, clean and tidy. Everything that you could want is at hand, easy access to airport, town, village, lake, sea and wonderful countryside. Food and wine great. I can recommend Le Grand Hermitage without any reservation but you had better make one quickly as it is bound to be in great demand as word spreads.
Far from the Madding Crowd
My husband and I lead very busy lives and we wanted a place where we could relax in peace and quiet. We wanted a rural retreat, but be not too far away from a town or city. We also wanted access to the sea when we felt inclined. The moment we rolled up outside the gates I was taken with the beauty of the surroundings. On entering the gated estate and being shown our g?te, we instantly relaxed. The g?te, the pool, the garden, everything shimmered with delight under the warm June sun. The place was clean, efficient and catered to all our needs: and it was gorgeous. There was a fantastic welcoming basket of goodies and the warm, friendly greeting from out hosts made us feel completely at ease. And indeed, the hospitality never wavered. Although we were self catering, our hosts were more than happy to cook for us as required and delicious was wine supplied as we requested it. The pool was a constant joy and we had this to ourselves throughout our stay. The weather was warm to hot and the estate provided both shade and sun as we wished. The gite itself was very spacious, clean and beautifully built and furnished. The bed very comfortable and there was a constant supply of hot water. We felt far from the Madding Crowd and yet we could be in the centre of Montpellier or be by the coast in no time at all. Perfect holiday and exactly what the doctor ordered.
Luxurious accommodation in a perfect setting.
We were delighted with our accommodation which was exactly as it appeared in the photos. An ideal retreat, perfect for couples wanting to get away from it all. The picnic basket including cheese, bread and local wine was very welcome on our arrival and the luxurious toiletries were a lovely surprise. Barbara and Richard were very helpful and informative without being intrusive, highly recommended.
Herault to Languedoc, adieu to stress
My girlfriend and I were looking to take time off from our hectic jobs and having recently taken an interest in wine, the Languedoc seemed perfect.
We don't like conventional hotels and really just wanted to find somewhere just off the beaten track but with plenty of scope to dicover a few French gems.
What we found in Clermont L'Herault and the beautiful Le Grand Hermitge was perfection. Totally unspoilt views of the vineyards as we lazed around the private pool (or soaked in the vintage bath in our bedroom!) and so easy as a jumping off point for the historic sights around the area.
If you do feel the urge for something a little more cosmopolitan, do check out Montepellier. Only about half an hour from Clermont L'Herault and well worth a visit before returning to the sanctity of your gite for a well deserved glass of wine and perhaps a little snooze in the evening sunshine!

A Wondeful week at Le Grand Hermitage
The accommodation at Le Grand Hermitage was stunning: the boudoir and bathroom were on the mezzanine were tastefully furnished and provided local handmade soap and toiletries, the mezzanine overlooked a very comfortable lounge and well equipped farmhouse kitchen, if the weather was chilly a wood fire was available.
In the midst of vineyards, it was very peaceful, breakfast in the sunny rear courtyard was a favourite of ours. It was a little early in the year for us to enjoy the sparkling blue pool which I believe has now been fitted with solar heating.
Our hosts Barbara and Richard were wonderful; they have a tremendous eye for detail. On arrival we found a basket of beautiful goodies to get us through the first 24 hours until we could get to the local shops, a lovely touch. They both are gourmands and guided us to good places to eat and good local produce to buy, Barbara is a stunning cook and if invited to join them for a meal I highly recommend you join them for a lovely meal of local produce.
We really enjoyed our trip to Clermont L?Herault, if we visit this area of France again we would not hesitate to stay at Le Grand Hermitage and enjoy the wonderful hospitality all over again, there was nothing we didn?t enjoy about our stay.
