Southwaite Green is in an area of peace and tranquility, with gorgeous views. This two bedroomed up-side down cottage sleeping four has been built into the hillside to take advantage of the fabulous views.

Southwaite Green is in an area of peace and tranquillity in the Lorton Vale, almost mid-way between Cockermouth and Lorton both 3 miles away, Keswick is 9 miles to the east. Within a short drive are the less frequented western lakes Crummock Water, Loweswater, Buttermere and Ennerdale, winner of Britains Best View. There is ample walking and cycling opportunities from the door and a wealth of shops and restaurants can be found in both... Cockermouth and Keswick.

The properties sit on Paddle Beck giving a peaceful ambience together with 10 acres of grounds including newly planted woodland, wildlife meadow, pond and arboretum. Consequently there is an abundance of wildlife including deer, foxes, red squirrels, badgers and the occasional heron that visits the beck, not forgetting the resident barn owl.

Southwaite Green is a development of four properties that have been recently converted and constructed by the owner, who lives on site, to an extremely high standard. The cottages have an abundance of local timber used by local craftsmen to retain the traditional character and wherever possible used the original timbers from the barn. They have been painstakingly converted using “green design and technologies” with ground and air source heat pumps to power the under floor heating beneath the slate and oak floors. A design feature has been the use of solar panels and the positioning of the windows to generate maximum solar heating to produce the heating and hot water. Great attention to detail has been paid to ensure that these are Eco-friendly properties, including organic bedding and towels, hand made furniture from sustainable sources and they have even gone to the extent of using Eco-friendly paints. The owners have gone to great trouble to ensure the properties have a low ‘carbon foot-print’ and to ensure your holiday is an enjoyable experience.

The development briefly comprises two, 2 bedroom cottages, Skiddaw and Esther’s Barn. Buttermere is a ground floor two bedroom cottage which is specially adapted for disabled use with mobility one and two rating and Beckside a three bedroom, three bathroom house. The properties have been given the much acclaimed Gold Award from the Green Tourism Scheme.

The cottage is ‘upside down style’ to take advantage of the views, is built into the hillside, has under floor heating throughout and comprises:

* Double bedroom with en-suite shower room with hand basin and WC.

* Twin bedroom which can be zipped together to create a double bed (please advise at the time of booking if double bed required) with en-suite shower room with hand basin and WC.

* Drying room.

* First floor: Open plan lounge/kitchen/dining area with colour TV and DVD player.

* Kitchen with electric cooker, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and microwave.

* There is a private terrace with patio furniture with views towards Skiddaw accessed through the dining area.

* All electric with ‘A’ rated energy efficient appliances, bed linen and towels included.

* Cot and high chair available.

* Private parking for 1 car with further parking available over the stream.

* A warm welcome awaits you from the owner including a welcome pack with fair trade and local produce together with a wide range of local books, maps, guides and places to visit.

* Shared use of the laundry with washing machine and tumble dryer and badmington / short tennis grass court.

  Skiddaw is one of a set of 4 'cottages' set in 10 beautiful, semi-wild acres of land. It seems like it is in the middle of nowhere but is only 2 miles from Cockermouth. We stayed in Buttermere, which is without doubt the best self-catering accommodation we have ever stayed in. It was contemporary,spacious, with great views. Two sets of double doors led out onto a lovely southfacing garden and patio, with the beck only a couple of meters away. We looked at all cottages as we will definitely come back, and Skiddaw looked great too.
  
  The eco-theme was fascinating and clearly there has been lots of thought and innovative developments so it just felt good to be there.
  
  We could take our two dogs which was a huge bonus, and it was lovely taking them out round teh grounds (which include a pond for swimming) and fabulous views of the Skiddaw and other mountains.
  
  I would highly recommend any of the 4 cottages. Buttermere and Skiddaw would be my favourites.

  Fantastic relaxing break in a beautiful area

  We arrived late at night and the key was in the door of the cottage with the place lovely and warm and ready for us. We were given organic veg, chocolate, beer and plum cake as a gift!
  The cottage was beautifully done out inside with gorgeous sheep fleece rugs, an amazing view out of upstairs, and the bathrooms were fantastic with a walk in shower in the guest bedroom.
  It is located close to Loweswater and Crummock Water and Keswick is easily accessible for a cream tea! We ate at Cottage in the Woods and the Kirkstile Inn which I would thoroughly recommend to anybody - they both offer amazing food and are roughly 10mins drive away.
  We loved the views from the windows, excellent location and space offered by the cottage. The drying cupboard for our wet clothes was also a lovely extra! There aren't any negative points of our stay - I would definitely recommend this place (and already have done).

  The cottage was lovely - finished to a high spec with no detail left out! The cottage embraces all that is eco=friendly and we enjoyed supporting this. The area is emerging and will be lovely as the planting grows and develops. Cockermouth was surprisingly lovely with independant shops and restaurants.
