Description from the owner
Southwaite Green consists of four cottages developed in 2007 by the owner, who lives on site, to an extremely high standard. The properties sit on Paddle Beck giving a peaceful ambience together with 10 acres of grounds including newly planted woodland, wildlife meadow, pond and arboretum. Consequently there is an abundance of wildlife including deer, foxes, red squirrels, badgers and the occasional kingfisher that visits the beck.
The cottages have an abundance of local timber used by local craftsmen to retain the traditional character and wherever possible used the original timbers from the barn. They have been painstakingly converte...Read more

528795Fantastic holiday accommodation.
Left on 03/06/2012 for a stay in February 2012
Beckside is one of four eco-friendly holiday accommodations at Southwaite Green, converted by Marna, who resides on site however, leaves you alone but is readily available to assist in anyway required. Set in tranquil, beautiful and picturesque surroundings.
This was our second stay at Southwaite Green, first time two years ago in Esther’s Barn however, due to an increase in our party of a five month old baby we decided to go for the three bedroom accommodation, also three bathrooms, a good thing with two young adults about! On our first visit Marna had taken time to show us the other three holiday cottages, so we were fully aware of all the amenities available.
Marna is a stickler for attention to detail from the fresh cut flowers, selection of locally produced beers, fruit bread, chocolates and newspaper awaiting our arrival. The kitchen is stocked with all the crockery, cutlery and implements, you would require to cook and serve a feast (or not, if you choose to eat out in the abundance of cafes, pubs and restaurants located in the North, Western lakes).
We were joined by our two (well behaved) Jack Russells, who had also been thought about with a doggy box containing essential items. Their favourite place during the stay is Whinlatter Pass, 5 minutes drive away, a beautiful mountain forest. Just one of the many walks we visited, as well as Buttermere.
Since our last stay Marna has supplied the accommodations with a wood burning stove, this added to the pleasure of the stay and was very welcomed (especially Feb/March), not that the under floor heating isn’t sufficient enough, because it is.
This is were I have to close, I could go on for paragraph after paragraph however, I advise, try for yourself, you wont be disappointed.
We definitely plan to visit again, hopefully in warmer months, to take more advantage of the grounds, wildlife meadow, pond and arboretum as well as the patio area by the beck. -

Brisbane, AustraliaA homely little cottage with a fantastic vista!
Left on 10/10/2011 for a stay in September 2011
We ( a family of five with children aged 9,14,16) found this cottage in the Lake district to be a splendid surprise. The house we stayed in near the beck was spacious yet cozy and very homely. It was lovely and secluded, nestled between the beautiful hills. We enjoyed a taste of the countryside, and a relaxing week away from the big cities we visited on our trip. The host was accommodating and the bundle of fresh vegetables straight from the farm left in our kitchen was much appreciated. And the young one enjoyed the chocolates! The only negative I have is that the pillows on the beds were very very thin. And with a five star home such as this softer and fluffier pillows are certainly needed to top it off! And also a pay pal payment option would have been useful. But we will still stay here again if we ever get the chance!
Response from Marna McMillin - 10/19/2011
Owner
Interesting. Generally we put a mix of pillows on the beds as people prefer different sorts. I will check this cottage to see what the position is there. This is the first time anyone has mentioned this - usually they ask where the pillows are from so they can get them themselves!

Fantastic soulful getaway in beautiful surroundings
Left on 10/07/2011 for a stay in September 2011
This complex of several rental cottages is an eco-friendly environment so you must buy into that concept to really appreciate it. Beckside is a fantastic 3BR/3Ba unit that is very well-furnished, with an unbelievably well-stocked kitchen. It has a patio (for warmer weather (sadly not used during our wet stay) and a wood-burning stove that we used most nights. They provide wood and kindling and just about everything you could possibly need, including a washer and dryer on the premises. The cottage is light and airy and a joy to just hang out in. Marna, the host, is helpful but doesn't hover. The fields and area around the site are planted with native plants, grasses and fruit trees and are stunningly beautiful. We were even provided with a hamper of fresh veggies, as well as some chocolates and some local beers. The cottages are well-located for Cockermouth which is a charming village with a big supermarket and many attractive shops and galleries. I hate to write a review because I want to keep this place to myself! Don't forget your wellies.

Huddersfield, United KingdomFive Star luxury Eco cottages in a beautiful lakeland setting
Left on 09/11/2011 for a stay in August 2011
We had a wonderful family and friend's gathering at Beckside and Buttermere in august 2011. All the adults and children had a relaxing time at Southwaite Green and enjoyed playing badminton and croquet on the grass court, Bbq's and lots of fresh air in the beautiful Western Lake District. Brilliant that you could take the dogs as they love the long walks up to the stone circle, on the paths all over the car free site and up to the swimming pond too!
The cottages are very comfortable and well equipped with every necessity and lots of nice luxury touches too. Amazing that all of this is powered by state of the art green technology that really works. -

Belper, United KingdomThis holiday exceeded all our expectations
Left on 07/09/2011 for a stay in June 2011
This was our third stay at Beckside. The standards at the cottage have remained equally high since the first time we went. The accomadation is built to a high standard and well maintained and still feels "fresh". The beds are extremely comfortable and the en-suites are spacious. The kitchen is built to a high standard and well equipped. Extras such as a box of local organic vegetables and bottles of locally brewed beer are very welcome. We appreciate the accomodation's green credentials: solar water heating and now electricity, underfloor heating from heat pumps and green waste management. Their success is that they work so well you are unaware of them.
The land around the cottages is managed to encourage wildlife. The twice daily 200m dog walk to the pond is a pleasure.
The location is quiet. The nearest town is Cockermouth (10 minute drive or 60 minute walk along the river) which is a very pleasant market town and much less tourist orientated than Keswick (20 minute drive). There are good pubs with food in Loweswater, Lorton and Buttermere. The fells at Buttermere and Winlatter are easily accessible and Borrowdale is only a little further.
We have had good weather everytime we have been. Sadly the weather cannot be guaranteed! -

We were so impressed with this eco friendly luxury cottage, with it's peaceful and secluded location. A high specification cottage in a courtyard setting with lovely grounds, a stream, pond and wild flower meadow. It certainly enhanced our enjoyment of the holiday. We were lucky to have good weather, but can imagine it would also be extremely cosy in autumn or winter. Marna was welcoming and friendly without in any way being intrusive. We took our collie and he certainly enjoyed romping around in the grounds. Should we holiday in the area again, we would definitely re-book.

Very comfortable and clean cottages in an idyllic location in the lake district.
All rooms had their own bathroom and with a decent sized kitchen and living area.
We were lucky in that we had sunny weather for the weekend and were able to bbq and walk into cockermouth (about 40min).
Great for small families or a large group to rent out multiple cottages.
Would definitely come back! -

Southwaite green is a beautifully rennovated cluster of self catering units in a stunning location in the Lake District. Beckside cottage was the perfect location for a reunion of old friends over new year. The house is warm, comfortable and equipped with everything you could need. The owner Marna is helpful and friendly - we felt instantly at home. We'd recommend this place to anyone looking for a self catering stay in the Lakes!

Newmarket, SuffolkSuperb all year round holiday home
Left on 06/12/2010 for a stay in May 2010
We have just enjoyed our second holiday at Southwaite Green - this time at Beckside to accommodate further family members. It is a luxurious, open plan, light and airy cottage, but with a warm and cosy feel provided by the easily controlled under floor heating. The bedrooms are very comfortable and all have their own beautiful en suites or bathroom.
We ate in most of the time and found the kitchen extremely well equipped and easy to work in. We enjoyed eating in the dining area with its French doors on to a south facing patio overlooking stunning views. The patio is also a super place to eat or sit and relax on sunny days. Back indoors, however, there is a large cabinet for drying walking gear on wet days - so everything is catered for, including of course a really comfortable lounge to relax in at the end of the day.
The site has been extensively planted with trees and shrubs. There are also picnic areas and viewing points – superb to watch the evening sun lighting up the mountains. The owner lives on the site and is always on hand if needed and happy to answer questions about her eco friendly holiday home project.
Having stayed in the Windermere area in 2006 we found the Western side of the Lake Distinct much more peaceful and relaxing. Southwaite Green is in lovely surroundings and close to so many areas of outstanding natural beauty. It's a five minute drive to Cockermouth, a pretty town (even after the floods), with William Wordsworth's early childhood home. It also has a supermarket for those wishing to cook at home, but there are plenty of places to eat out. The larger town of Keswick is only about a 20 minute drive away.
The whole holiday experience was excellent and it was good to be able to carry on recycling our rubbish whilst away. Our only regret was that we were too warm to light the wood burning stove!

Newmarket, SuffolkSuperb All Year Round Holiday Accommodation
Left on 06/05/2010 for a stay in May 2010
This was our second visit to Soutwaite Green - this time in the larger Beckside to bring other family members to enjoy the superb eco-friendly site and luxurious accommodation which was cool in hot weather and really warm in cold weather.
As usual we received a friendly welcome from the owner who when pressed was always happy to talk about the energy efficient houses and the planting which has been done on the surrounding land - really thoughtfully planned and just right for an evening stroll with picnic areas and viewing points.
The site is just a 5 minute drive to Cockermouth with its small interesting shops, but also a handy supermarket and of course Wordsworth's childhood house. It is short drive to Buttermere and so many other places in just stunning scenery..
The thing I like best is that the houses are so well and thoughtfully appointed with bathroom/shower rooms for each bedroom and extremely comfortable beds. My only disappointment was that we were never cold enough to light the log fire in Beckside.

Birmingham, UKSuperb accommodation, lovely environment
Left on 04/21/2010 for a stay in April 2010
We like Beckside/Southwaite Green so much that 2010 is the third time we stayed and this time we invited two other families to join us, in two of the other buildings. Marna is great - she's on hand to help out with any queries but is sensitive enough to keep a low profile too. The accomodation is always spotlessly clean and fresh and is of the highest quality - a really good, thoughtful refurbishment of lovely old farm buildings and with the great achievment of being carbon neutral. We have visited during cold and warm weather and can confirm the underfloor and solar heating is really effective! The site itself is great - this year we had 7 children with us, all of whom had room to roam and who really enjoyed paddling in the beck, looking for frogs and toads by the pond and running around in the grounds - it wasn't quite warm enough to take advantage of the barbecue area but that looked good for summer months. Southwaite Green is located about 20 mins from Keswick (leisure pool for the kids!)and not far from Cockermouth and Lorton, a lovely area although we tended to drive to other walking areas - Borrowdale, Langdale etc. What did we like best? The freedom and relaxation it brought all of us, particularly the children. What did we like least? The CD player! Minor detail, sorry Marna!

The house was absolutely spotless when we arrived. It was very comfortable and had a really well equiped kitchen. The views from the sitting room were fabulous, we could see the fells with snow on the tops. There are also some lovely pubs around the area serving good food.
I would definately recommend it to friends and family. -

Left on 03/30/2010 for a stay in March 2010
My husband and I were invited by a friend to Southwaite Green to celebrate their Silver Wedding Anniversary. Beckside is just lovely with everything you would want, added to that the green ethos of the whole project made our stay even more enjoyable, knowing that this place lies very gently on the earth and contributes to the growing awareness of what our actions are doing to our planet.
I could have stayed much longer and explored the walks, fells and lovely villages and towns around. I know I will be back. -

Left on 03/17/2010 for a stay in March 2010
We were very impressed by the allocation of space and the high quality of the furnishing and fittings. Great care had been taken to limit the evironmental impact of the properties and the grounds surrounding the property were nicely set up to give a natural feel. This provided an excellent feature for our two dogs, that accompanied us. Booking in and the check out were both handled smoothly. We felt very relaxed in the cottage and the proximity to Buttermere, and its surroundings, gave us great access to one of the most beautiful areas in the Lake District. Cockermouth is close, with good facilities, but not too close and there are some excellent Pubs close by for both eating and drinking. We most enjoyed the comfort, tranquility and access to outstanding walking opportunities. On the down side, it could be five miles closer to Buttermere.

We had a wonderful winter break at this delightful holiday cottage. It was
warm, cosy and welcoming with beautifully designed living accommodation,
superb bathrooms and bedrooms and indulgent underfloor heating. We
explored the thoughtfully landscaped site, home to wildlife from badgers to
buzzards and thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful surroundings. All this set in
spectacular scenery so near to the northern lakes, Cockermouth and Keswick
..... people-friendly, pet-friendly, eco-friendly .... who could want more? We

We had the most fantastic stay at Beckside. The best holiday cottage we have
ever stayed in in the Lakes. The cottage was high quality with all the amenities
you'd want from five star accommodation, yet it was eco friendly, not two
things you'd assume go together. The environment around the cottages is
stunning the nature trails, and the help and welcome, things like to veg box
and welcome packs were fantastic and added to the whole experience for us.
We will be back!
