This was our third visit and we knew exactly what to expect: a warm welcome,a first class well equipped gite, a welcome pack with enough food and drink for us not to have to go shopping straight away, beautiful gardens, a stunning pool/Jacuzzi/barbecue area, help from Sally and Peter when needed, a delicious barbecue cooked for us, peace and tranquility, lovely towns and villages nearby and as usual, an unbeatable holiday.

      a little paradise in France

Its so hard to sum up how much we all enjoyed staying at the "Grand Bambous"
We only stayed the one nights B&B; in the middle of a two centre holiday between the Vendee and the Dordogne. Having chosen this destination as being ideally placed between our other accomodation and after endless internet searches plumped for this (mainly because of the very nice website)
From the moment we arrived we we made to feel at ease. Having arrived very early, Sally was busying herself getting the Gites ready for the soon to arrive guests and kindly showed us to to the poolside to relax and drop the bags before the room was made ready. Peter soon introduced himself with the offer of poolside drinks and also introduced us to "Duke" their ever so freindly labrodor.
Within an hour we were all changed and in the very inviting pool. With the temperature reaching mid 30's this was indeed a welcoming pleasure.
We were told evening meal would be around 7ish down at the poolside for a BBQ, and we saw Peter starting to get everything ready, setting tables, cleaning the BBQ, stocking up the fridge with drinks.
following a walk around their extensive gardens, vegatable plot and orchard, we all showered and changed for the evening meal.
Another English family of four who had just arrived within the last few hours for a week in the Gite also joined us for the meal along with our Host Sally, with Peter doing all the cooking in front of us.
What an evening !!! their website descibribe the Bbq's as Peters famous Bbq's and it certainly lived up to its name, Peter was also responsible for the drinks, and i believe from 7pm till almost 11pm no-one had an empty glass due to the endless topping up of drinks! Well the BBQ started off with different types of sausages, (supposed to be for the kids, but i think we all tried them!) there was the traditional Burgers, followed by Chinese Spare ribs and then there was Duck and Pork and Turkey, these had some of Sally's special marinade, which was to die for"! there was also big Salmon steaks, along with all the vegatables from their own garden... it all just kept coming and coming...
if this was not enough Sally produced a Cheese board with regional variations followed by a fantastic dessert, prepared by Sally but cooked by Peter on the BBQ, Banana's in a Cognac and almond sauce with Creme Freche...ooohhh
It was a warm balmy evenening that could have went on an on, the conversation was wonderful and Sally was a lovely Hostess with stories of their lives in France. it was an idylic evening, but we eventually had to drag ourselves to bed.
The breakfast was everything we imagined, all fresh and local, even freshly squeezed Oranges !!

Sorry to have stayed only the one night, but it did make such a lasting impression and feel as though we have met two lovely people and two friends...

Left on 07/19/2012 for a stay in June 2012

I have been 3 times now with my wife and once with my aging parents, its a very quiet
area, great if you want peace and quiet, Sally and Peter are great hosts nothing is to much
for them , they did us a lovely barby one night 5 courses for 25 euros each , great value.
The pool area is good, the pool is 29 degs so nice and warm if the weather is cold.
The accommodation is very good, comfy bed and good showers.
The drive is about 7 hours from Calais so you can do it in a day if you get an early ferry.
Lots to see and do around the area Jarnac, is really nice, also a trip to the Isle de Rey is a must. Great place you will not be dissapointed.

Came to stay here after major surgery earlier in the year, and it put me right back on my feet again.

Calm and peaceful surroundings, the option of excellent food, everything clean and tidy, good for walks and helpful owners.

Quite rural but close enough for travel by car to more poulous areas and the coast.

Disappointed I wasn't able to play golf at the time but I'll be back with my clubs next year!

We were a party of 3 families with teenagers. We had some really sunny days lazing around the pool and playing scrabble and some slightly cloudy days which were still warm and ideal for site seeing in Cognac, Saintes and angloueme. We made full use of the available bikes going for a ride around the pretty villages or just to the bakery. Had Boules competition on the local pitch and the boys played tennis in nearby village.. good court. Hot tub a real hit as was the bar area near the pool. The best thing though was Sally and Peter's BBQ and meal they cooked for us and their general hospitality and friendliness. Gites lovely and clean and well equipped with a welcome hamper as a bonus.

Peace and quiet in the country

Left on 10/16/2010 for a stay in August 2010

I stayed here in august with my parents and my daughter (9). There are three different gites - each with two bedrooms. Two of them can be linked together to form a four bed/two bathroom unit. We stayed stayed in the gite attached to the owners' house. You could book all three if you were in a big group and it would work well. The property is perfect if you like peace and quiet. The gites are well equipped including basic cleaning supplies and you are provided with a 'welcome basket' of food and drink on arrival.

The owners have a labrador dog who has access to all the grounds (except the pool area) and was a big hit with my daughter although if you have toddlers this might be an issue for you.

The area is quiet and its easy for children to go out on the bikes that are available to use. Teenagers might get a bit bored but its perfect for 5 - 12 year olds. There are no shops or restaurants in the village so a car is essential. There are some good restaurants nearby and if you wish Sally and Peter will provide dinner (I would recommend booking the barbeque for the first evening as its a good way of meeting the other guests and saves having to worry about cooking or finding somewhere to eat).

Left on 10/04/2010 for a stay in August 2010

Arriving at La Maison Des Grands Bambous at Louzignac in the Charente Maritime area of South West France was like stepping into heaven, especially as we had
been bitterly disappointed with our previous Gite in the area. That's why these personal reviews are so important.

Sally and Peter Yik make sure your stay at their small Gite complex is a joy from beginning to end. Entering the grounds, the first thing you notice is the beautiful well cared for garden with brightly coloured plants everywhere. This leads on to the main house and first Gite.

The lovely exteriors of the Gites have been painted in the
traditional Charente manner, and you can see Sally's loving touch evident in the scrupulously clean interiors, where the traditional white walls and wooden
beams have been complimented by the new (but traditional style) furniture. The bathrooms are immaculate with lovely modern showers and crisp clean ceramics.
The kitchens are fully fitted out with everything you could possibly need (they now even have my oyster knife!).

The heated pool, with plenty of sun loungers, is a joy to use, and is especially suited to children. In fact my son took his first unaided strokes there. Near the pool is the barbecue area where Peter weaves his magic, but is available for all to use. The Gite we stayed in is one of two that look over the giant Bamboo grove. There is a lovely patio area and lawn outside where one can have breakfast and an evening meal while looking at the magical Bamboos. Sally is always available without being obtrusive, which is just the right balance one needs to relax with. My wife and children had a beautiful time there and we look forward to returning. The prices are unbelievably great value for a three star Gite. You'll have a great holiday there, you won't be disappointed.

Superb food both French anf Oriental

Left on 06/21/2010 for a stay in September 2009

We recently stayed at La Maison Des Grands Bambous at Louzignac in the Charente Maritime in South West France, while our new house was being built. At this point we should stress that there are two Louzignacs, this is the 17160 Louzignac near Matha and not near Cognac. The first thing we should say is the welcome one receives from Sally and Peter Yik is fantastic. Within minutes you are made to feel part of the family - don’t let Duke’s pleading Labrador eyes make you think he does not get fed! It is worth the trip just for Peter’s BBQ’d moules. If you are staying as B&B; guests and decide to take the evening meal as well, we suggest you pack one size larger than usual waist sizes. The food is superb and covers not just French Cuisine but Oriental as well. It goes without saying you have a great choice of local wines and of course Cognacs and Pineaus. Your hosts will share their wealth of knowledge of the local area and its products with you which they obviously enjoy doing, giving you ideas of places to visit and see. Cognac with it’s well known distilleries is half an hour away. During the bleak winter months they work in the local vineyards, thereby increasing their knowledge. If you are staying in one of the superb Gites the welcome is still the same. Sally is a perfectionist and this is shown in the Gite presentation. You have your own patio and lawn looking onto the bamboo stand from which the property gets it’s name. Like B&B; guests you have use of the large heated swimming pool together with the use of BBQ area and spar pool. There have been occasions when Gite guests have persuaded Peter to do one of his magnificent BBQ’s. Imagine the scene setting sun, poolside relaxers, chilled Pineau in hand and the delicious aroma of BBQ’d local produce and above all more often than not total peace, the butterflys sound noisy!
