Casa Gelso is an apartment of 42 square meters (about 450 square feet), for four people. It is part of an historic stone house, and has a patio, it also shares a pool and a 4000 square meter (about 1 acre) park.
It is part of a farming estate located on a low hillside, 300 meters (about 980 feet) above sea level.
You will be in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, 50 km (31 miles) from Florence and 20 km (12.5 miles) from Siena , among the hills in which Chianti wine is produced.
A short distance away, you will find some of the most famous towns of Tuscany , such as San Gimignano , Monteriggione and Colle Val D’Elsa.

Casa Gelso is on the ground floor: entry is by way of the patio, into a living room with a divan bed. From the living room, you can move on to the kitchen, and from the kitchen, a small corridor leads to the double-bedded room and the bathroom with shower. The patio is a long and spacious terrace with a view of the valley and of the pool; the doors to three apartments open from here. Each apartment has a separate reserved space with table and chairs, deck-chairs and umbrellas.
The swimming pool
You will have at your disposition a lovely pool of 7 X 14 meters (about 23 X 46 feet), surrounded by lawn and equipped with deckchairs and umbrellas. The pool is shared among the guests of the other three small apartments.
Stretched out by the pool, you will be able to enjoy a beautiful and expansive view of the gentle hills that surround you.
The location
At Casa Gelso, you will spend your vacation in an historic and fascinating location.
Casa Gelso is one of four apartments that have been renovated, and that are attached to a small church dating back to the 1200s.
The church and the attached rooms originally formed a small compound.
There was the priest’s living quarters, the wine cellar and storage, and rooms that hosted the pilgrims who passed through here on their way to Rome .
In fact, through this area of Tuscany (the Val D’Elsa), passed the ancient “Via Franchigena,” the official road to Rome taken by pilgrims from all parts of Europe. This was one of the principal communication channels of the medieval world. Along this road, many similar country churches were constructed; these are still called “Pievi.”
Beyond their religious functions, the historic parishes also served as gathering places for the residents of the community. Because of this, there is usually a village or at least a small group of houses next to the churches.
At Casa Gelso, the sense of history is tangible—you will feel almost like a time-traveler, able to glimpse the true reality of days gone by.
The church is slightly raised from the surrounding countryside. Even before you arrive, from a distance you will be able to see the refined construction, with the round apse crafted from stone and brick, and the tower with the elegant double lancet window in which the bells are located.
The entire building has been lovingly renovated, re-using historic and traditional materials: in a single moment, you will be transported into the atmosphere of times gone by.
The beautiful stone and red brick construction, the surrounding green lawn and flowering hedges, the vast horizon of gentle hills that fade to pale blue at the horizon: all this will infuse you with a sensation of peace and well being, and you will feel overjoyed to be a part of this place during your vacation!
The apartments that have been renovated as vacation homes are all on the side of the church that faces towards the hills, and have a view of the large swimming pool located a few meters away and below.
The church can be visited. Perfectly restored, it holds a room in which the owners receive the guests of the apartments.
Not far from the house, there is also a small hamlet of stone houses.
Household Furnishings and Equipment
At Casa Gelso, you approach from the terracotta-paved patio. From this patio, you can enjoy a splendid view of the pool, and of a vast horizon of hills. You will find umbrellas, deckchairs, table and chairs: perfect for eating in the open air!
From the patio, you enter into the living room, in which there is a divan bed for two people. An opening closed by a window and a grate allows you to look from the living room to the ancient wine cellar, with its barrel vaults.
In the kitchen you will find a huge and ancient fireplace.
The kitchen is equipped with four-burners, oven and refrigerator with freezer. A laundry room is available.
A short corridor leads to the bedroom with a double bed and to the bathroom with shower.
The furnishings are carefully chosen, and in the welcoming style of the Tuscan countryside.
You will find ancient terracotta floors and ceilings made of wooden beams and terracotta tiles.
In the garden, you will find a barbecue area with wood-burning oven, available to all the guests.
Casa Gelso is equipped with parking space and heating, satellite TV and telephone.
It is possible to buy the products of the farming estate of which this house is a part; these include Chianti wine and extra-virgin olive oil.
Neighboring tourist attractions
Staying at Casa Gelso, you will be in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, 5 km (about 3 miles) from Colle Val D’Elsa, a small city famous for producing crystal objects.
This is the nearest place where you will find shops, restaurants, supermarkets, banks, tennis courts and golf courses, and bike rental facilities.
You will be within reach of the great “art cities”: Siena, Florence and Pisa . You will also be able to visit the most characteristic towns of Tuscany, starting with San Gimignano, the city of 100 towers, and Monteriggione, the medieval town encircled by an ancient wall.
Don’t miss the opportunity to travel the “via Chiantigiana,” which is the “wine road” that cuts through the territory where Chianti wines are produced.
Along this road, you will see rows of grapevines to the right and left of you, and hills topped with castles and villages, the evidence of two millennia of history.
You can visit wineries, discover wonderful small restaurants, and experience the friendliness of the local residents, which is truly part of the fascination that Tuscany holds for the rest of the world.
If you enjoy hiking, you can trek through the Senesi hills, or part of the via Franchigena that crosses the Montagnola Senese, a protected hillside covered with chestnut trees, where nature is uncontaminated.

It is part of a complex of four small vacation apartments, created through the restructuring of a stone building dating back to 1200, consisting of a former Romanesque church and its various adjoining rooms.
You will have at your disposition, along with the guests of the other three apartments, a swimming pool of 7 X 14 meters (23 X 46 feet), 4000 square meters (about 10 acres) of land, and a soccer field. In the garden, there is also a barbecue and a wood-burning oven.
The swimming pool is open from May 1st to October 15th.

We stayed for one week at Casa Gelso in the late summer and had a
wonderful time (September). The host family that runs the place lives
across the street and was very welcoming and helpful. Our apartment was
spacious (there were two of us), the kitchen was nicely equipped, and the
bathroom was a good size by European travel standards. Everything was
spotless on arrival. The bed was comfortable, although we probably could
have fallen asleep on the cement outside after our packed days! The rolling
hills and fields around the property made for a wonderful backdrop, as they
were in variegated shades of brown, yellow, and rusty red at that time of
year -- classic Tuscany colors. The patio and pool provided a great area to
relax during the day and evening. Two other apartments in the home do
share this patio space, so be prepared for potential lack of privacy when
you're outside. On the other hand, if you luck into some friendly
neighbors, you could make some great new international friends. Overall,
the home is fairly central within Tuscany but it is removed from any of the
major towns/villages. We felt that having a rental car was essential. With
the car, it was a good central location to explore from. Sienna, the Chianti
region, and many of the popular hilltop towns are within an hour's drive,
maybe less. Before we left to continue our month-long Italian adventure, it
was nice to be able to do some laundry too. No dryer, but the Tuscan sun
does a pretty good job of that.
Casa Gelso is a wonderful place if you want to spend
your vacations in Tuscany. Its peaceful, quiet, with
a view that will enchant you. The villages near are
beautiful, and as it is in the heart of Tuscany you
can get any place you would like to visit.
After a long day it is always nice to return to Colle
Di Val Delsa and drink a glass of wine on the
teracce.
