Description from the manager
Search the world and you will not find a more exquisite property than Maison Miele, located near John's Folly and Estate Concordia, near the quiet and charming hamlet of Coral Bay on St. John's south side. The house is constructed with the finest materials, a European flair, old-world charm, and an expanse of windows at a private perch of a peninsula overlooking the sea, offering a breathtaking view as if from the bow of a ship. Maison Miele (Honey House) is a unique structure of the sort that surpasses its function as a house and is unto itself an artwork. Floral hedges and fruit trees frame formal gardens and the edging of a path along the...Read more

Albany, New YorkI'm still "on island time" when I think of Maison Miele...
Left on 01/29/2012 for a stay in January 2012
Maison Miele was a welcoming and relaxing setting for our intergenerational family vacation, with five of us ranging in age from mid-twenties to eighty. This was our first trip to St. John, and we really appreciated the Windspree rep who met us at the ferry. After we picked up our rental car and groceries for breakfast, she gave us a quick course on island life and led us across the island to our vacation villa, pointing out important features along the way. How would we ever have found the right driveway (dirt road) without her? Fortunately the short road to Maison Miele is not steep, just very bumpy.
The style of Maison Miele and its guest house is attractive and understated. The blue fabrics echo the house's main attraction for us-- the expansive and awe-inspiring view! During the day, we watched the changing scenery of the bay, with white clouds against blue sky and the occasional sailboat against the islands on the horizon. At night, we watched the moon as it waned and marveled at how many stars we could see against the black sky.
This is not to say that we spent all our time gazing at the view! We fell into a routine of leisurely breakfasts, an excursion to a different beach every morning, home for a late lunch and then a variety of afternoon activities. Reading by the pool or in the hammock was popular, but so was horseback riding near Coral Bay, hiking to Rams Head or visiting the annaberg Plantation Ruins.
The kitchen at Maison Miele is well equipped and invites cooking in. Miss Lily's grocery and the Love City MiniMart supplied us with enough for dinner when we didn't want to drive to the larger grocery stores in Cruz Bay. The house is close to Miss Lucy's and Cafe Concordia, both restaurants that we enjoyed.
The gardens at Maison Miele are lovely, with bright bougainvillea and other plants we couldn't identify, tropical hummingbirds flitting around, and the occasional gecko or hermit crab. Following directions, we were careful to close the gate when we left the house, in order to prevent the wandering bands of goats from enjoying the garden in a different way. (Their bleating woke some of us up at night.)
If there was any negative about Maison Miele, it was that we needed to drive everywhere, even to take a walk. The road along Coral Bay is twisting, narrow and hilly. And there's no access from the house down to the water's edge -- it's a twenty foot cliff. Finally, as I examined my itchy arms and legs once I returned home, I really wished that I had heeded all the local advice to apply insect repellent as regularly as sun screen. But these were minor inconveniences. Overall, Maison Miele was a great setting for a memorable vacation.
