Kansas City, MOHighly Recommend this villa! Wonderful for families with small c
Left on 03/29/2013 for a stay in March 2013
Do you want to be slightly off the beaten path but still close to some great restaurants, not too far from the beaches and have an amazing view to look at first thing every morning? Then stay at Mill Ridge. Hilarie, the owner is so accommodating from the very first inquiry you send her. Not only did she get my down payment to St. John Car Rental, but she realized we were arriving after they had closed for the day and picked our car up for us! She then sat and waited while we stocked up on groceries in Cruz Bay and then led us all the way to the Villa and gave us a quick tour/rundown on the place.
Overall review of the Villa: This villa is beautiful inside and out! It is stocked better than any other vacation rental I have ever stayed in. It was me, my husband and 7 year old daughter. This villa attracted me because we were bringing our daughter and so many villas have the 2nd bedroom on a different level and/or with an outside entrance. This is perfect for families with young children! It has a pool where you can easily shut and lock the gates also making you feel safe with young children. The pictures are very accurate minus the views of Coral Bay.. which are so much better in person! This was our first time to St. John but we have been to many Caribbean Islands. I think the first thing you look for when going to an island is to stay on a beach. There are very few places that allow you to stay on the beach in St. John and with so many beaches to access; it is way more fun to drive to a different beach every day. We also looked into the Gibney Beach Cottages since they were on the beach and we did go to Gibney Beach and it is a very pretty beach, but I feel we made the right decision by staying at Mill Ridge. We met the people that were staying in the Gibney cottages and they were hanging out with the people that were staying in the other cottage.. now that is not a bad thing, but we just preferred the seclusion we had at Mill Ridge.
Having a hard time deciding between Cruz Bay or Coral Bay? I really think it is up to the person. We like to be away from any town activity such as Cruz Bay, but others may like being closer to the conveniences of Cruz Bay. We actually loved both Francis and Maho Bay Beaches which seemed to be less of a drive from the Coral Bay side. And the other beaches still were not that much further to access when staying in Coral Bay. I can't do a good comparison for the restaurants because we only dined in Cruz Bay one time, but I will say Coral Bay had 2 awesome restaurants, Aqua Bistro and Shipwreck Landing. I also read other reviews where people said Coral Bay was far superior to Cruz Bay for better restaurants. And keep in mind, Cruz Bay is only about 20-25 minute drive from Mill Ridge.. so no big deal to get to if you need groceries or gas. When we return to St. John, we will stay at Mill Ridge in Coral Bay for sure!
We felt the dining was far superior in Coral Bay vs. Cruz and our favorites were aqua Bistro and Shipwreck Landing. Aqua was only about 5 minutes and Shipwreck was about 7 minutes.
Other general tips:
• When you hear a truck honking.. stop and if you can get over. Large trucks need both lanes when taking the sharp turns.
• Don't get to close behind large trucks anytime.. but especially not when you are on a hill and/or when it is raining as they tend to slide back down and hit cars.
• Set a bowl of sugar out by the water fountain and the Bananaquit birds will eat out of it.
• As much as I loved Mill Ridge and loved the separate vanities in the master bath, the lighting was horrible.. so ladies, you may want to pack your makeup mirror for your evening primping. :)
• On your way back home - get a porter at the airport! It will save you tons of time standing in lines and I think they only ask for $6 (we tipped on top of that). It is so worth it! You not only have them taking care of your luggage, but you are directed to a priority line. Traveling back home is not fun, so make it easy on yourself.. totally worth it and then some!
• Speed limit is 20mph and 10mph in town.. seems slow, but it is not with all the crazy winding turns.. Watch out for Donkeys, goats and chickens in the road.. There was especially a lot of roaming goat near Coral Bay.
• Cruz Bay Eating / Shopping - We had lunch only one day in Cruz Bay at High Tides.. It was good.. not as good as our favorite Coral Bay places though. Nothing real special about Cruz Bay to do.. however we did like Bones Rum which is very close to the Ferry side. Here they had frozen mixes of many popular island drinks and they let you pour your own rum.. which was fun. Bones has only been around for 2 years and is made on St. Croix. Nice and smooth! We bought 2 bottles. We also really liked St. John Spice. Here you can obviously buy spices, but also all of the local hot sauces you see in the restaurants. They had some awesome teas, colognes, rum cake and numerous other fun and unique items.
• Remember - There is only one gas station on the entire island and it is in Cruz Bay. There is a tiny grocery store above aqua Bistro, but it is very limited and even pricier.. So get your gas and groceries needs while you are in Cruz Bay.
• Spend a night out on the patio table at Mill Ridge and listen to the unique sounding frogs and just simply enjoy the serenity Mill Ridge has to offer! Love, love this place and highly recommend it to anyone and it is exceptionally good for families with small children.
* Enjoy the trade winds and leave it opened up if it is not too hot! We did close it up at night just because we had our daughter with us and felt more secure by closing it up, however we never had any reason to feel unsafe. -

Vienna, VirginiaOne of the best rentals we have ever had!
Left on 02/02/2013 for a stay in January 2013
What made it one of the best for us? First, the villa is lovely, clean and well-appointed and the photographs and discriptions are accurate. Secondly, it does not feel like a rental, it feels like your home. We cooked many meals and always had what we needed in the kitchen. Plenty of books in the loft library and a few on St. John. Beach chairs, a small cooler. Thirdly, we have never had personalized service before, usually a key under the mat. Hilarie, the manager, personally escorted us to the villa and gave us an orientation. She was accessible during our stay, organized, efficient and very nice.
Relax and enjoy the fabulous view! -

Melbourne, FLFantastic island living!
Left on 09/14/2011 for a stay in March 2011
My wife, son, and myself stayed at Mill Ridge during my son's Spring Break week. We loved everything about this place. We like to cook in most nights, and the selection and quality of the appliances and utensils made doing so a breeze.
Most mornings we ate breakfast on the covered porch looking out on Coral Bay Harbor, and most evenings we ate at the outdoor gazebo just above the swimming pool. My wife loved the visits from the bananaquits that came to feast on the sugar she put out for them.
The drive up to the place is one that you'll want 4WD for, and is slow going, but a lot of that was due to the torrential rains they'd had not long before our trip, that had washed some of the road bed away. While we were there work had begun to repair and improve the road, but we wouldn't let that deter us from staying there even if it didn't get "fixed".
The driveway is beyond ample and there is even garage parking to use if you so desire!
The quality of the workmanship in the home is outstanding, and the owners have anticipated every need - right down to a printer to use for your boarding passes for your trip back home.
The owner/property manager was a joy to deal with - before, during, and after our stay.
This was our seventh visit to St. John, and until we booked Mill Ridge I'd never heard of it. After staying there, I'm amazed at that fact since this is such a great property. You should rent it before the word gets out and you won't be able to!
