      Spectacular, comfortable, convenient

Left on 03/03/2013 for a stay in February 2013

It truly is hard to imagine how a vacation place could be better than this. It’s a place you’ll want to come back to, again and again. Everywhere you look, at every hour, you see gorgeous views. They’re even lovely when it rains. The setting is utterly serene, literally at the end of the road on the most natural and one of the least-populated islands in the Caribbean, and yet you can get there within two hours of landing in neighboring St. Thomas (which has very good air service). The directions might look complex at first glance but actually are very easy and straightforward to follow – we never felt confused. And the drive is beautiful, mostly through national parkland.

The hilltop site, in addition to giving wonderful views, also ensures constant breezes that greatly increase comfort both by moderating the temperatures and keeping bugs away. The house itself is sited and designed to catch the breeze, and you can always supplement the airflow with big, quiet ceiling fans in every room. There’s also air conditioning for the bedrooms, which might be nice in summer, though we never felt any urge to turn it on in February.

The house itself is bright, airy, well laid-out, and well equipped for comfort and convenience. There were a total of six of us and we never felt the least bit crowded in the three spacious bedrooms and lofty great room. We had no kids in our group but we would say that as many as four younger children could have been accommodated comfortably as well. It’s anything but spare or stark (as many other vacation homes are) filled with color and appealing art. The sturdy, comfortable furniture is all in good shape.

You can walk down to a secluded beach and other beaches are no more than five minutes away by car, all with superb swimming and snorkeling in some of the cleanest, most sparkling water on the planet. Reefs ring all the beaches. Less than half an hour away lie the renowned, magnificent beaches of the north shore, protected within the 7000+ acres of the Virgin Islands National Park. The park also offers a wide range of hiking trails.

When you get back to the house take a dip in the pool, right on the broad wraparound deck, to rinse off or just to relax in the warm afternoon sun. Then head down to the town of Coral Bay, just a few minutes away, for dinner in one of a number of restaurants. Our favorite was Reggie's Barbecue, a simple rustic stand with outdoor seating and outstanding food, cooked by one of the nicest men you’d ever meet. Or stop by Lilly’s Market, a few doors away, to pick up the makings for a simple meal at the house, which comes adequately equipped for basic cooking.

The big deck is a wonderful place to sit at night, under a brilliantly starry sky with the lights of passing ships in the distance. Or stream Netflix movies to your tablet using the house’s WiFi.

St. John is a destination not to be missed, and you won’t find a better base to experience it from. See where it is on Google Earth at 18°20'3.3"N, 64°40'29.6"W.

One tip: Don’t rent a car any bigger than you really need. The trail up to the house is very narrow and you risk scrapes or scratches with a wide vehicle. Once you’re there the house has ample off-trail parking for three cars.

Another tip: Learn to recognize Diadema antillarum, the Caribbean black sea urchin, and stay clear of them in the water. A very important and valuable creature, but not one you want to have an encounter with!

Amazing location, decor to bring a smile, unimpeded vistas.

Left on 02/09/2013 for a stay in January 2013

Points of View is aptly named. Situated high above the bays on the east end of St. John, this lovely home offers breathtaking panoramas from its huge deck and dipping pool. The sunsets are particularly spectacular. When you tear yourself away to go inside, you're greeted by cheery, colorful decor and comfy furniture where it's easy to settle in with a book or meal. With two spacious bedrooms upstairs and a separate "apartment" with a kitchenette below, POV offers great space for guests to hang out together or get away for a few private moments.

The east end of St. John is a special place; the beaches are quiet and secluded and the snorkeling is terrific. We saw rays, squid, hawksbill turtles, eels, sharks and -- of course -- countless jewel-like reef fish. The town of Coral Bay is an easy drive, where you can find provisions, restaurants, snorkeling gear and boats to rent or charter. Several of the not-to-be-missed local haunts include Skinny Legs -- a bar/restaurant with fun shops -- and the Donkey Diner, which serves a great breakfast. The barbecue at Reggie's is also a good deal. I'd recommend renting a Jeep or other rugged vehicle to traverse the hills. Once you get used to the roads, driving on the east end is a lot of fun but be careful!

It's a easy walk to nearby beaches. And a hike down the hill to the salt pond is worth the effort. There's not a single drawback to POV except when the time comes to leave.

The best view on St. John

Left on 02/08/2013 for a stay in January 2013

If you are considering a vacation in the Usvi, go to St. John, and rent Points of View. First of all, the setting is spectacular - at the east end of the island, high enough above the ocean to catch the breeze. And most importantly, enjoy the most spectacular view you can imagine. The house has a huge deck and a plunge pool, and lounge chairs that will allow you to sit and read. But I warn you - the view is so amazing, you won't be able to concentrate on your book! In the evening, the sunsets are seductive, and the stars put on a wonderful show. There's a dining table on the deck, so you can eat under the stars.

The east end of St. John is a good place to rent a house, because you have access to a number of beaches with what I consider the best snorkeling on the island. You can walk to some of them, or take a quick drive to others. Stock up on your groceries in Cruz Bay when you pick up your rental car, or replenish your stock in Coral Bay, which has a grocery, liquor/wine store, several bars and restaurants. The house is equipped with a BBQ grill, and all the features you would expect in a well-equipped kitchen. Each of the bedrooms has a terrific outdoor shower, and there's another private deck off of one of them. The house is surrounded by flowers.

The drive from Cruz Bay to the East End takes you up to the top of the island, and affords spectacular views of the British Virgin Islands and of Coral Bay. I highly recommend it.

Cheerful, commodious home; fantastic view; marvelous snorkeling

Left on 01/28/2013 for a stay in January 2013

I've stayed here many times, with great pleasure, and each time I arrive to this cheery, welcoming home, I am newly entranced by the sight of the sea, the mountains and the bay below. At night the starry sky is awesome. Rainbows appear and disappear as the clouds come and go scudding through the sky. It is a total delight!

I love to swim and find it an easy and pleasant walk to the water.

The beds are comfortable, the living easy. It is extraordinarily perfect at Points of View!

First visit to St. John- husband and two kids (13 and 9). Points of view is a magical, whimisical home that welcomed us with open arms. It is the perfect place to just relax-quiet, isolated- no crowds, no hassles-just us and fantastic managers- Athena and Jay-who made things easy. Words cannot describe how perfect it was.

For seekers of a relaxed week of sun, snorkeling, and conversation over meals on a terrace overlooking a cove dotted with sailboats, gorgeous sunsets as backdrop, this is the place. Rather eat out? Several nearby restaurants run the gamut: upscale regional Caribbean cuisine to burgers and beer. From Points of View, we could walk to the beach and cove below for great snorkeling, or head out for adventuresome driving and a new beach every day. We did a little of both.

A Bit of Heaven on St. John

Left on 03/26/2010 for a stay in January 2010

Points of View is aptly named since from the deck you have a 270 degree unobstructed view of the ocean and shoreline. It is worth the trip just to sit on one of the lounge chairs and sip an island drink while watching the birds, the water and the sail boats. We stayed in this gorgeous, comfortable, well appointed home with our daughter and with four other adults and two other children. The accommodations were terrific and we never felt crowded. The children especially liked being able to play in the loft on the rare occasions when we weren't enjoying the St. John beaches. They also loved to come back from a day of swimming and snorkeling to wash off the sea water while playing in the pool. We would strongly recommend Points of View to anyone thinking of renting on St. John, and we plan to return regularly to this beautiful home.

Beautiful low-key luxurious villa, ideal for families or couples

Left on 03/24/2010 for a stay in January 2010

House sits high on a hill above Coral Bay -- spectacular views/sunsets. It's kid-friendly without being kid dominant; indoor/outdoor places for group fun or being away from group. A 15 minute walk down the hill to beach and great snorkeling -- rays, turtles, fish, coral. If the non-intrusive owner's around, she's got good tips on restaurants, sites. Beach reading? place is filled w mysteries, thrillers, novels and serious non-fiction. Wireless, internet for the work-tethered.

A zillion stars, cool breezes, amazing sunsets, very quiet.

Chefs: great kitchen, indoor/outdoor dining. Note: no oven, but who bakes on vacation?

Any downside to paradise? you must have a car, preferably 4WD. Shops & restaurants are 3-4 mile drive. Ferry is a 10 mile drive. But you'll not want to take it back anyway.
