Additional Location Information
Paphos is in a truly enviable location, relaxed, peaceful chic restaurants mingling with traditional tavernas, bars, shops and beautiful beaches. The heart of holidays in Paphos, has to be the pretty little harbour at Kato Paphos, famous for its resident pelicans. Lined with bars, cafes and tavernas, it's a pleasant spot to while away an hour or two with a beer or a chilled glass of ouzo. As for the rest of the resort, it's got all the trappings of a modern holiday playground, along with a generous helping of historical interest on tap.
Paphos ha sa large number of places where you can wallow in the lap of luxury, and pamper yourself with health and beauty treatments, or just find a peaceful hideaway, if you want to escape the crowds and just chill out.
Holidays in Paphos come with culture and history included. The resort is on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list and there's plenty to catch the imagination of even the most experienced sightseer, including an ancient fort, some fine old churches and a heap of Roman remains, including some of the world's best preserved mosaics.
The beautiful beach resort of Coral Bay is often described as the best bay on the west of the island. And it's no surprise, when you consider the calm turquoise sea, dipping gently into some of the clearest off shore diving space in the Mediterranean, the scattered palm trees, the 600 metres of soft white sand and, in summertime, the almost cloudless blue skies.
Tourism came to the seaside village of Coral Bay later than many other Mediterranean holiday destinations, and despite its popularity the resort has retained a genuine local charm. The pace of life is very laid back and things tend to centre around the activity on the beach. You will also find lots of very friendly tavernas and restaurants selling delicious local dishes, with seafood a speciality.
The relaxing environment of the resort, the long warm days and simple pleasures of good food and beautiful views may well lull you into that perfect holiday mood. However, if you want to get up and explore, Coral Bay is a wonderful base from which to see Cyprus' best and most secluded beaches. All along this coastline you will find little sandy coves, protected by the rugged coastline, just perfect for a day trip out.
A short drive from Paphos
Coral Bay is just a short drive from the city of Paphos, once the capital city of the island. Dating back to pre-Roman times this has been a bustling city, so it is literally full of sights of archaeological interest. For example, the Tombs of the Kings is an amazing subterranean world full of hugely decorous tombs, with pillars and ancient engravings. Also of note is the Agia Solomoni church, which is still covered in some 12th Century frescos, a rare sight this far east in the Mediterranean, while according to legend the tree outside the church has healing properties. Meanwhile, the Mosaics of Paphos are considered among the finest in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Sea Caves Area
The unspoilt coastline of the Sea Caves resort is scattered with several breathtaking little sandy coves, which are the perfect spot to enjoy an evening picnic as the stunning sunsets fill the sky.
St George's Area
Also known as Ayrios Georgios, this picturesque fishing harbour is one of the island's best places to enjoy a seaside holiday. The fantastic sandy beach is popular with sunbathers and leads into a gloriously warm, clear sea. You can enjoy all sorts of seaside pastimes including snorkelling, safe bathing and even scuba diving. If that doesn't whet your appetite then the menus in the local fish tavernas certainly will. With amazing fresh local fish being hauled right into the harbour every day, the selection of fine seafood dishes is mouth watering. Our recommendation is to try a fish mezze in one of the restaurants overlooking the ocean.
Akamas National Park
Located in the west of Cyprus the Akamas National Park is possibly the most picturesque corner of the island. Covering approximately 230 square kilometers the Akamas peninsula is where you will find wild landscape, amazing natural beauty, deep gorges, and wide sandy bays. The diversity of wildlife is of outstanding ecological importance for the Mediterranean and the wide variety of fauna is certainly impressive. Here you can find 168 different varieties of birds, 12 different mammals, 20 different reptiles and 16 different species of butterfly.
The importance of the Akamas Peninsula is recognised far beyond the shores of Cyprus. The European Council has included the Akamas Peninsula within its Mediterranean protection programme and within Cyprus, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace are campaigning hard for the Akamas Peninsula to be declared a National Park.
Avakas Gorge
This impressive gorge is in the western part of the Akamas peninsula, about 5 km from Coral Bay. The linear trail through the gorge is approximately 2.5 km long with steep rocks on both sides reaching up to 80 metres in height with the narrowest point being just 3 metres wide. Deep inside the ancient gorge you will be amazed by the towering cliffs, rare plants and flowers, reptiles, wild mountain goats and delicate ecosystems.
Lara Bay
This extensive and often near-deserted sandy beach requires is accessed along several miles of un-surfaced tracks. Lara Bay is an extremely important turtle breeding ground as here you can find the green turtles and hawks-bill turtles. These turtles are on the endangered species list and Lara Bay is being made a safe haven for them as attempts are being made to provide safe sites for their egg laying.
Baths of Aphrodite
This shallow pool approximately 30 kms north of Coral Bay and approximately 6 kms from Latchi is an interesting spot to visit. The natural grotto features a caved pool surrounded by ferns and shaded by a fig tree. The water to the pool is supplied by a natural spring. According to mythology, Aphrodite used to bathe in this pond and it is here that she met her beloved Adonis for the first time. The waters here were believed to have special rejuvenating powers, and swimming here would guarantee eternal youth and beauty.
The Blue Lagoon
Accessible only by boat, the water in this small bay on the Akamas Peninsula is so clear you can see all the way to the bottom. The cool and tempting waters are great for a gentle snorkel.
Nature Trails
Crisscrossed by rocky hiking trails, there are 3 official nature trails through the Akamas Peninsula, Aphrodite Trail, Adonis Trail and Smigies Trail. Hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of rock formations, huge gorges, limestone outcroppings, mis-shapen coastline and cliffs and boulders sculpted into odd shapes.
