Description from the owner
France still has the dream like quality we search for in our holiday destinations. The Tarn region in Southern France is removed from the well worn paths of foreign tourism and offers serenity and spectacular scenery to those looking for new adventures. Our recently renovated 2 bedroom cottage is a comfortable, tasteful home with splended views across the Cerou Valley. La Maison des Oiseaux offers you the opportunity to spend a while in a wonderfully perserved, yet lively, medieval bastide village with all the comforts of the 21st century living.

Additional Location Information
Cordes sur Ciel is in the Tarn region. The Tarn is known for its long views, deep river gorges, fertile farmland, vineyards and forests. It is situated in the Midi-Pyrenees, the largest region in France.
Cordes sur Ciel is located 75km north east of Toulouse and is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France. As one of the gems of the region, its unique 13th and 14th century Gothic houses are reminiscent of Renaissance Tuscany, and cobbled streets, large Halle (open air marketplace) and stone building are evocative of an earlier era. Our house sits just below the medieval town square.

Melbourne, AustraliaCharming house and garden in a stunning location
Left on 11/06/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This is a very comfortable and well appointed house near the centre of the beautiful, historic village of Cordes-sur-Ciel. A highlight of our visit was the morning walk down through the cobbled streets to a local boulangerie for a freshly baked baguette - the views through the low lying mist were breathtaking. The car parking facilities were very convenient and allowed us easy exit and entrance back to Cordes after our many visits to the surrounding villages, markets and countryside.

Hi Neil & Sue
Thank you for your review. There are some many unique things to like about Cordes sur Ciel and the walk down and back to the boulangerie is one of them. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay. -

Left on 11/04/2012 for a stay in September 2012
La maison des Oiseaux was superbly appointed.Every detail from the comfortable and stylish furniture to the gourmet's delight of a kitchen was thoughtful and designed to ensure that guests felt at home. The views are truly magnificent and it is certainly worth watching the sun rise as it reveals the gorgeous French countryside. We ate nearly every meal on the wisteria covered terrace. Cordes sur Ceil is a very friendly town and all our interactions were marked by thoughtful consideration and kindness.Perhaps the steep climb may put some off but there is always the little train to help you up the hill if you are laden with goodies from the fabulous Saturday market.

Our stay at La Maison des Oiseaux began with the pleasant surprise we felt the moment we climbed the steps leading to the gate at which we entered the lovely courtyard and surrounding garden. The delightful renovation to the house was evident when entering and we were overwhelmed by the outlook over the surrounding hills and fields with their summer crops immediately in evidence.
The rooms struck as very comfortable and well appointed which proved to be the case. The kitchen area had all we required and we spent the time we ate at home looking out over the spectacular yet restful view either inside or out in the courtyard.
The convenience of exiting by the top garden gate directly into the medieval city was a pleasant surprise as we walked in each of the available directions to visit restaurants, galleries and shops.
With our car parked conveiently nearby we spent each of our 8 days travelling east, south, north and west to places of interest and towns in some of which were fabulous markets with local produce and goods.
It is an area full of history and well worth a visit and especialy a stay at the beautiful Maison des Oiseaux.Response from Marie & David Bird - 08/26/2012

Melbourne, AustraliaLa Maison des Oiseaux was a magical experience.
Left on 07/11/2012 for a stay in May 2012
La Maison des Oiseaux exceeded our expectations in every way. It was spacious, beautifully furnished and located in a breathtaking position high on the side of this superb medieval village. The atmosphere was totally relaxing and we always delighted in returning to the house after excursions into the village and the surrounding countryside. The large and attractive garden area was a real bonus and added enormnously to the overall ambience of the property. This was by far the best house we have rented in France during several visits over a number of years.

Left on 07/05/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We stayed here last year for a week and enjoyed it so much that we immediately re-booked for a fortnight this year. No regrets about that decision!
Marie and David Bird have a lovely fully renovated Maison with all mod cons and outstanding views of the countryside... We ate breakfast and our evening meals out on the terrace - and took in the sun and views. There is so much to see nearby in pretty and historic villages that a fortnight barely does your visit justice. We also like to relax closer to home some days - so there's plenty to see by strolling around Cordes itself. The Saturday market is a wonderful experience with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat as well as other local produce. We ate in most nights (fabulous kitchen and panoramic views) but there are many restaurants within an easy walk. We will definitely return... -

This recently renovated home on the ramparts of Cordes-sur-ciel has provided visitors with a very comfortable place to stay with luxurious furniture and fittings and an incredible vista through floor to ceiling windows which are uncommon in these homes.Closeness to the town (both old and new) and in an area of France which invites exploration and involvement makes this a very desirable property to consider in making holiday plans.

Left on 06/17/2012 for a stay in May 2012
This wonderful property has been designed to a very high standard and would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit an historic and pretty hilltop village. The views are amazing and we were really comfortable. You would like your own home to be like this property. Caroline, the property manager, couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful. We actually spent a lot of time at the house reading and generally chilling out.
In the old city at the top our experience was that eating places tended to be open mainly at lunch times and then only a selected few in the evenings which meant planning meals ahead. The market and other shops are down from the property in the new town and definitely worth a visit to the local boulangerie. You need to be either fit, or able to take a car up and down or you can walk down and take the tourist train back up which is worth the experience - very efficient young lady driver when we were there.

The house is in a fantastic location with magnificent views. It is 5 star and outfitted with only the best appliances. The photos on the website are accurate but the ones of the view do not do it justice. Communications with the owners was always easy and prompt. We were met in the village by the housekeeper and taken up to the house at the top of Cordes sur Ciel. She explained everything we needed to know and gave us some tips on the local markets in neighboring towns. Car parking is provided in a locals only area and also included 30 minutes free parking at certain spaces in the village below. We used this as a base for our stay in the area. We did venture out to explore the surrounding villages but did spend a significant amount of time just relaxing in Cordes and enjoying the view. I would have no hesitation in recommending this house to anyone wanting to visit the area.

A superb house in a magnificent location.
The home is spacious and comfortable, beautifully appointed. One's every need was anticipated. Masses of cutlery, crockery etc. made for an easy life.
The views across the valley from the full-length lounge windows and from the terrace were enchanting.
We arrived in darkness late on Saturday evening & were met by a most charming lady, Caroline. She took us to La Maison des Oiseaux & introduced us to some of its features.
On Sunday morning we walked into the lounge to find the house magically encircled by cloud - we appeared to be floating above it, with just far hilltops and steeples showing through: a perfect introduction to a sublime week.
Walking into the village in the cool of the morning to buy bread, etc. enjoy a voyeur's coffee and back up the hill for lunch - always outside, although inside was equally delightful. Lingering was so easy for us!
The village has lovely places for a delightful evening drink.
Having spent time in the region in the past, we felt that we could truly indulge ourselves by "staying home" for more time than we would usually have done.
We will definitely re visit La Maison des Oiseaux Cordes sur Ciel France.Response from Marie & David Bird - 04/04/2012

The service we received from the owners could not be faulted. All our queries were answered fully and promptly. On our arrival in the village, we were met by their local representative who, with her most cheerful smile , led us through the property and made us feel at home, giving us local tips and assuring us that we could ring her if we had any problems.Although the property is described as a cottage, this does not do justice to its beautiful inclusions and high level of luxury. It has everything to make us feel at home, with beautiful furnishings and graceful rooms. The kitchen is a dream!
The hilltop village has a special charm and encourages many hours of gentle walking to discover its history and beauty. The surrounding villages and larger towns are within easy driving distance, and well-worth visiting, as well as the many chateaux and their vineyards.
We especially enjoyed walking down to the village in the morning, buying our bread and possibly having a coffee and pastry, then wandering back up to enjoy a lunch of local food under the covered pergola in the beautiful courtyard.
We found our time here was very special; we were able to relax and appreciate the wonderful views from the balcony as we sipped our lovely French wines.Response from Marie & David Bird - 10/20/2011

Left on 10/19/2011 for a stay in September 2011
Met by Caroline who took us to the villa and explained everything we needed to know about it, the village and the surrounding countryside. When Caroline unlocked the door to the large terrace it was quite surreal - the web site came to life there and then and into the villa it was a feeling of deja vu.
The villa was all we expected and more, everything you would want in holiday villa was there. Speaking as an Interior and Furniture Designer, the interior design and the selection of the furniture, furnishings, paintings and decorative items, was truly the work of a very talented designer.
The location was magic, the views across the valley were enchanting, it was all so peaceful and quiet, the village provided all we needed for food and drink.
Everything about 'Maison des Oiseaux' is just wonderful, the only thing we were not happy with was having to leave after one week, we wish it had been longer, next time it will be. -

Situated near the top of this medieval village, there was a great view across the valley. The house was very comfortable, and well appointed with modern appliances. The locals welcomed us, so that we enjoyed the experience of buying produce at the markets and shops, in spite of our schooldays French. Several artists have high quality work on display in the village.Consider yourself lucky if you stay here.

My wife and I spent 7 weeks touring Europe and this was undoubtedly the best 'blind' booking we made. I first discovered La Maison when searching for a place in the South of France. We have been to France on a few occasions and wanted a quiet, central location from which to explore the Cathar region of France. My wife being a French teacher, we had been to France on numerous occasions but nothing prepared us for this place. My wife described it as "sitting in heaven and looking out over the best part of France". Location, cleanliness, views, facilities, value for money - it was perfect. I would have no hestiation in going back or referring this place.

Marie and David's website set high expectations - which were exceeded. On arrival in the village we were met with a cheerful greeting from Caroline who guided us to our parking space and introduced us to the La Maison.
From the moment we walked through the terraced garden and into the entrance hall, we felt comfortable in this very welcoming home. It is exceptionally well-appointed with all mod-cons and tastefully furnished. Some nights we ate out at one of the many eateries within walking distance up in the old village (or down in the new village) and other nights we ate in. The kitchen is fully equipped, the local butcher (chez Denis) has great meat, and the view from the dining table overlooking the countryside below is simply stunning. Of course, a bottle of local wine from Cave St. Michel adds to the pleasure.
The house and its terraced garden are spacious and we spent some of our stay just relaxing. The winding network of cobbled lanes and alleys threading their way through this historic village provided many hours of interest and photographic opportunities.
The in-house wi-fi system was fast and very convenient.
The house is situated away from traffic thoroughfares. Peaceful evenings and very little traffic noise.
The guest information book is kept up-to-date with recommendations about such things as markets, food suppliers, eateries and scenic drives. We found this very useful. Caroline also provided local info.
Although we had originally planned to use La Maison as a base for a number of day trips, this changed as we settled in and just enjoyed "being there".
Short trips into the surrounding region were sufficient and full of interest. Albi, Ambialet and Najac were all worth spending some time wandering around; and Le Jardin des Paradis in Cordes was a wonderful experience for us.
Toulouse and Carcassonne will have to wait until next time. Maybe a one-week stay is too short?
Yes, we are already talking about our next visit...

We had a short Springtime stay at La Maison des Oiseaux in Cordes. All the booking and planning arrangements were very straightforward. The house was beautifully appointed and very comfortable...we felt special and were encouraged to call our contact if there were any problems.(There weren't) The view from the windows and terrace was spectacular and we enjoyed the opportunity to cook and relax in our own luxury environment after experiencing the pleasures of Cordes and the region. The medieval history of the area, the countryside and the many interesting features were all new to us and we are keen to go back sometime.
La Maison des Oiseaux is very highly recommended -

Left on 03/17/2011 for a stay in July 2010
This was without doubt one of the best holiday experiences my partner (French) and I (Australian) have had in recent years. We travel frequently in France and neighbouring countries these days and can highly recommend La Maison des Oiseaux.
The region offers extraordinary experiences of mediaeval history, spectacular vistas for photography or painting and, of course, excellent wines and local produce.
The village of Cordes sur Ciel is one of the wonders of the South of France. And the house - right in the centre of the village - offers every modern convenience and comfort.
We enjoyed walks from the house to the village's many cafes, art studios, bars, specialty shops and places of historic significance. We drove to neighbouring towns and villages to see the countryside and shop for antiques. At home, we were warm, cozy, comfortable and completely self-contained.
