San FranciscoIsland Perfection - The Local Experience
Left on 11/09/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Our stay at Thalassa Garden was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Greece. Soti, Spyros and Maria gave us the warmest welcome, a ride from the ferry station and our gorgeous studio greeted us with wine and home-made olive oil. If you are eager to experience Corfu in the local fashion while still having all the luxuries and independence of your own studio, this is an amazing find.
Soti taught us how to fish for octopus and urchins, explained how to locate Corfu's hidden spots and shared some amazing food, beats and laughs with us. Every day, Maria greeted us with a different local treat. We were so excited to feast on eggs from her Mom's garden, stuffed eggplant, fresh pomegranates and foraged spinach. The spirit of the place was so warm and welcoming that by the end we were not only friends with Soti and his parents, but also with the amazing other couple staying on the property. We can't wait to come back! -

This is owned by a local family who from the start made us feel incredibly welcome; we were offered Greek coffee as soon as we arrived. The room was fairly basic but well equipped. Our room contained a kitchen area with bathroom just off to the right. The kitchen was equipped with a small oven and an electric hot plate, plus fridge/freezer. The bedroom was equipped with a TV, stereo system (with a jack lead for mp3 players) and an aircon unit. This led onto a balcony, although we did not use this much as we spent most of our time when there in the gardens.
The gardens are the best feature of this place, they are huge and right next to the sea. It was a very relaxing place to sit and hang out. The sea did feel more like a lake due to the proximity of the mainland. Word of caution - this area of Corfu is quite 'pebbly' so footwear is recommended for going into the sea. That said, the sea was remarkably calm and actually quite warm! We had access to a pedalo which was great fun to use for a little trip up and down the coastline, which we did most evenings. The gardens are great to sit in during the evening to watch the sun set over the Corfu mountains.
We were given fresh produce from the garden such as tomatoes and peppers, plus mint to dry out to make mint tea, which was really thoughtful and just added to the welcoming feel of the place. This place was perfect for a relaxing break; we do not like chains or corporate style accommodation so this was great for us.
For nearby amenities - Thalassa Gardens are situated close to 3 tavernas and only a 15 minute walk into Messonghi which has shops to stock up on supplies plus many more places to eat and drink. The owner, Sotirios, is more than happy to give you recommendations and directions for anywhere to go to in the vicinity. He also gave us lots of directions and tips on where to go nearby on trips out. We spent a bit of time exploring the beaches on the west side of Corfu which were lovely and sandy, the beaches vary in use, some are more unspoilt but have facilities such as kite surfing, others are more set up for tourists but they were all lovely. We hired a car which we picked up at the airport; it was approx 30 minute drive to Thalassa Gardens. Whilst a car is not mandatory we would recommend having one as it gave us the freedom to explore other parts of the island, and as I said earlier, Sotirios is more than happy to give you recommendations and suggest routes to take.
We would definitely stay here again and feel that we not only had a lovely relaxing holiday but have also made some friends in Corfu as well.
