My family and I rented Smileaway for a week in august, 2012. The rental appealed to us for several reasons including its proximity to the beach (5-6 minute walk)as well as the amenities that were available (ie. swimming pool, large hot tub, volleyball court, game room, etc. The house is laid-out nicely, and there was plenty of room for the 14 people in our group. However, we had some problems with the air conditioning, a bathroom shower door falling off its hinges, a large crack in a bathroom mirror, missing shelves in the upstairs refrigerator and the clothes dryer going on the blink. Some of those problems were corrected when we reported them. Others were not. The property is really nice if the owner can do some refurbishing.

Thank you for letting us know about your stay at "Smileaway." This is a wonderful property that is one of our most popular rental properties. As we discussed with you during your stay because these are individually owned homes we do from time to time have small inconveniences like one of the three a/c's not working properly or the dryer not drying the clothes completely as expected.
We appreciate you acknowledging that we did get someone there to fix the one a/c that went down within 24 hours of your call, and the fact that the dryer repair man came out in short order too. We actually did not hear from you about these other items, but you will be glad to know that the mirror was fixed, and the refrigerator has been taken care of by the owner as well.
The owner of this property is one of our most involved homeowners and indeed he is keenly aware of any suggestions that are made for improving his property. He is aware of your review and like him we appreciate your feedback so we can improve in the future.
Smileaway is a very competitively priced and conveniently located rental home in the Corolla area that gets great feed back from the guests that stay there. We are happy to hear your feedback so future guests can enjoy the property even more.

Our stay was plagued with alot of issues due to problems at the "Smileaway" residence. The air condition was broke on the middle level of the home, 4 bedrooms were very warm and uncomforatable. One bedroom didn't have air or a fan. The shower curtain on the middle level was covered with mold. The pool sand filtering system was "broken" and had to be fixed while we were there. Although there were alot of bicyles, several bikes had to be taken apart to make 2 bikes that could be used to ride. 2 old hot tub covers were left in the "yard" area, the weeds were grown up so much in the horse shoe pit area that it couldn't be used. Missing horse shoe pole also. During our stay the bushes around the home and plants were being cut by a loud power saw making it difficult to be outside around the pool and for a small child to sleep. The TV in the main family area would "cut off" for no reason, the computer in the basement was not usable. The tv in the basement also needed to be worked on to be used. The flys around the pool area required us to clean the deck area and use sprays ( we had no food outside ). We would not return to this residence for a vacation.

We are disappointed to read your poor review of this property. This is one of our most popular houses with our customers and has consistently ranked among the favorites in Corolla on trip advisor.
Our records show that we responded to each issue within a few hours each time you contacted us, and most of these issues were not brought up to us.
Unfortunately we suspect that this poor review is a result of us finding damages to the property after your stay and the fact we are looking for compensation from your party regarding items that were broken during your stay.
We apologize that we are put in the situation of being the heavy sometimes, but when it comes to dealing with homeowners' properties we must be proactive when it comes to finding and repairing damages caused during a guests stay.

Smile Away is a great home that offered so much for all the family to do. Plenty of room for the whole family. We usually stay in an ocean front property and was worried about the distance of the home from the beach. Well don't worry! the walk is a short one. Not bad at all. The trade off for us was good because of all that Smile Away had to offer for our family. Our guys especially loved ping pong! We all loved the hot tub. The pool was clean and well kept. We didn't get to do everything the home had to offer because the weather was perfect for once. So, we stayed at the beach most of the time.

SmileAway was a nice property with great amenities. My complaint was that the place was filthy when we got there. Other than changing the sheets, it looked like little else was done. When we arrived my entire party of 10 adults (7 children who cared less) complained that the property was dirty and filthy. My sister-in-law was scrubbing the toilets and my father-in-law was cleaning the crud from inside the refrigerators (not how you want to begin your vacation). I called the mgmt. company and the owner who were both very nice and concerned about making the situation right. A cleaning crew was sent out the next day who were fabulous, but said they were not the crew who usually cleaned. They also commented that the place was definitely not cleaned according to their guidelines. Hopefully, Outer Banks will do a better job in the future managing their cleaning crews. My guess is that their cleaning crews may have more properties to clean than they can handle. The owner of this property was very nice, accomodating, and genuinely concerned. I fault the management company not the owner. Nice place to rent and we enjoyed our stay.

Our Smile Away vacation was amazing. From the time we got there till the time we left everyone had a fantastic time. With all the house had to offer and it's proximity to the beach - we barely left the area. The weather was great and because we went in April we had the beach and the area around our house to ourselves! Highly recommend and we can't wait to come back next April!

The house is defiantly kid friendly. All the games and movies you can think of. We loved the option to rent unlimited movies and games while our stay. The teenagers loved the internet access and bikes. The only thing is the house needed repairs done. The door to one of the rooms was not repaired all the way.

SmileAway was a great retreat for me and my boys. With the beach a few feet away, the pool and hot tub accessible 24/7, the basketball hoop and volleyball court always calling for a game, and the ping pong/billiards table available, there was never a shortage of things to keep us occupied. In the evenings, the boys enjoyed the video games, the house provided wireless as well as two desktop computers, and the kitchen and wrap-around decks were great. Plenty of bedrooms, everything imaginable provided, we would definitely seek SmileAway again.

We stayed at SmileAway for the OBX Marathon. It was a wonderful family vacation experience. The house was beyond spacious with more than enough room for all of us and our dogs.
We had great weather with only a few days of rain. The indoor activities such as the air hockey table (needs a bit of work) and the pool table (could use new cues), plus all the board games and books kept us busy when we couldn't go sight seeing.
The WiFi Internet access was appreciated as well.
We would definitely stay again. -

The house was the perfect size for our 5 families to get
together. Those who didn't have kids didn't want to hear them
crying in the morning. The house was big enough and came
with its own toys to let the kids play and not make a lot of
noise. The home its self is in need of a little upkeep... but all
that can be forgotten when you see the size of the TV -

We really enjoyed our stay at Smileaway. It had all the amenities we were looking for and an awesome price. We will definitely return next year.
The only complaints I have is that the house wasn't really as clean as we expected. But, there were numbers by all the phones saying we could call the owner at any time if we had issues. We decided not to after finally arriving late on the evening of check in, so that was our choice. THe other thing we weren't expecting was some of the "toys" are a little rough around the edges. The pool table wobbled, the outdoor play items were rickety and my husband repaired all the bike chains and pumped up tires just so we could ride them. The master shower on the 3rd floor actually collapsed while we were there. But no damage was done and my handyman father put it back together good as new.
I guess the home just needs a little TLC. It was rented every week of the year, thats probably why the little issues.
BUT, that being said, we really enjoyed the pool and hot tub, both were really clean. The kitchen was nice and well stocked and the ping pong table and air hockey were used all week. It really was a little home away from home. We would definitely return. The beach was only a couple of blocks away and a short haul on bikes. Nice place to stay. Just needs a little TLC in the off season.

Had a wonderful week at the Smile Away. Plenty of rooms (3 adults, 5 kids) - clean and nicely decorated. Wonderful decks with a nice view of the water.
Pool wasn't open but the hot tub was nice. We used the grill out back which was convenient. Also convenient to shops and restaurants. The game room, basketball court, and proximity to beach kept the kids busy. I would stay there again and recommend it to friends! (in fact I did). -

Beautiful home! So much room! Was pleasantly surprised how well you could hear the ocean on some days. Can't think of anything the home dosen't have. The table games and dart board could use an update but with such beautiful weather we weren't indoors much. The pool and horse shoes were a huge hit with everyone! If coming back to the Outer Banks I would be staying here. Thanks for sharing your wonderful Home with us!

We had 15 people and 2 dogs and this house fit all of us. There was so much to do on days you didnt want to walk the block to beach or even after a funfilled day at the beach! Highly recommend Smile away!
