Spring break
Toledo, OhioRelaxation at its's best
Left on 04/25/2013 for a stay in April 2013
The Gem of the Ocean was exactly as described. Outer Banks Blue was a great company to work with and being able to remotely check in was wonderful. The house was very close to the beach. The location to shopping, and other Outer Banks sights like the Wright museum and Jockey Ridge State Park was a nice driving distance. The kids that were with us ranged from 6-17 all found things to do and had so much fun. The roomy kitchen was so nice to just cook at home, which we did the entire trip. Our family and the 2 other families that came with us had plenty of room to relax and have a great week of vacation.

Lake Bluff, ILPerfect house for our family and budget
Left on 06/19/2012 for a stay in June 2012
I have rented from Outer Banks Blue several times and find it very easy to handle the booking. Love the keyless entry that allows us to arrive anytime without worrying if the office is closed.
We have stayed at Gem of the Ocean three times, so obviously we like it. We usually travel with just our family of five and maybe one or two guests, so we don't need a huge house. Gem has two deluxe master king bedrooms, one nice sized queen bedroom, and a so-so twin bedded room, in addition to the bunk bed room on the lower level. Our son, now in his 20s, stayed in the bunk bed room and found it pretty stuffy. Not sure there is an air conditioning vent in that room! But the other three bedrooms worked well. They all have sliding doors to patios. We think the location of the house is great. It is right across from the beach walkway. It is in a part of Pine Island that only has two rows of houses, so the beach portion is very uncrowded. Really appreciated the addition of gas grills to the house--not sure when those were acquired but I seem to remember older charcoal grills in the past. The pool gets afternoon sun, which we appreciate. We like the fact that you get a glimpse of the ocean from the upper levels--not always true in "Semi oceanfront" properties. The new landscaping is pretty.
The kitchen supplies are good on the whole, but supplies of spoons could use a once over, both small size and serving spoons. There were plenty of knives of every size, though it was hard to find a sharp one. We appreciated the supply of bar glasses on the middle level.

VersaillesGreat location needs updating
Left on 08/15/2011 for a stay in July 2011
First, we paid $100 for early check-in and the house was not ready. After entering the house the toilets were not cleaned, the frige had water in the drawers, and not enough bath towels left(no washclothes). There are no flat screen Tv's, beach chairs, or bikes. The description of the house stated there were bikes. For the price of the house there should be some beach chairs. This was our 16th year at OBX and every house we have rented in pi had beach chairs. Also, my mother-in-law fall getting out of the hot tub because there were not any steps to the hottub. The kitchen needs updated appliances and not well stocked.

ChicagoComfort and ease close to the beach
Left on 09/28/2009 for a stay in September 2009
Gem of the Ocean is very well located. As a semi-oceanfront home, it is just across the street and up the wooden walkway to the beach. We have stayed in oceanfront homes and the convenience is not that different. And from Gem of the Ocean you can even see the ocean from the living room and front decks. In addition, you get great views over the nature reserve to the west, and lovely sunset views, especially from the kitchen and dining room. The great room and dining room have an abundance of windows to maximize views in all directions. The pool is on the west side of the house which is optimal for afternoon swims. There are two king master bedrooms, with almost identical luxury bathrooms (whirlpool tubs) and private decks. The other bedrooms are very suitable for multiple family members. One room has a queen bed plus a trundle bed, which could work well for several youngsters who want to share a room.
I really don't have anything negative to stay about Gem of the Ocean. We have stayed in this house twice so obviously we liked it. This past year the house next door (to the north) was not in use (awaiting some repair work?) and the pool had gotten all slimy and not too appealing to look at (fortunately it was only visible from one deck). Hopefully this eyesore will not be there next season! -

Lancaster, PANice Layout, clean, and easy walk to the beach
Left on 08/15/2009 for a stay in July 2009
This home was clean and nice. The layout is great for different age groups. The Aults kept to the top level. The Teenagers stayed in the middle level where there was a TV and couch for them to hang out. The Younger kids hung out at the bottom level where there was a fooseball table and played games. The beds were very comfortable. The only problem was the appliances were not all working properly. The freezer upstair wasn't cold enough. Ice cream would not stay frozen. The range burner sometimes works and somtimes doesn't. There wasn't enough plates and bowls or a variety of sizes. The pots and pans are old and the non stick pans sticks. 2 dishwasher would have been nice. Otherwise, I would recommend this house. Good location, good layout, just need a few update appliance and amenities.

Old Bridge, NJGreat Vacation
Left on 10/01/2008 for a stay in July 2008
I really loved this home. We could not afford Oceanfront this year and this was almost just as good. The beach access is just across the street, practically. We loved having the pool on the Sounds side of the house because we got Sun there all day and especially in the afternoon and early evening! The home was well appointed and Outer Banks Blue was great. Loved the keyless entry !!

PennsylvaniaOBX - Pine Island
Left on 10/01/2008 for a stay in August 2008
This was our first time visiting the Outer Banks and all in all it was a great vacation. Pine Island is beautiful and the people at Outer Banks Blue were very helpful. They recommended that subdivision for us and I was very happy they did. The house however was another story. The location was wonderful (across the street from the beach) but the overall condition of the house was not what I could have expected for that age home. The cleaning crew had to come back in and sweep/mop again because the floors were all sticky and we found old food on some of the carpets. The stove was worse than any I would even put in one of my rental properties (all four burners were loose and uneven which made cooking very difficult). Some windows didn't lock and most windows were really dirty. About four flood lights in the kitchen were broken and there was hardly any matching silverware. The pots and pans were of the worst quality ever! I swear I could have bought better ones at the dollar store. It is really a shame since it seems to be a nice house that just hasn't been taken care of. In the future, I'd hope to get a better deal for the kind of money we spent. I'd even spend more money to make sure we didn't have this problem again.

Wayne, PALovely home
Left on 09/22/2008 for a stay in August 2008
Everything about the home was lovely and fit our needs for two families with 7 kids in total.
Our only complaint is that the Pine Island community claims access to tennis courts. The reality is that there is only one court for which you have to sign up for and it is not in a very convenient location. There are courts for which you can pay which are not directly associated with Pine Island and they were sometimes closed.
I would like to submit a request to the Pine Island community that they invest in more tennis courts and distribute them throughout their extended community.
