Nice Older House, Could Use Minor Improvements

Left on 08/19/2012 for a stay in August 2012

My family and I stayed here for a week and really enjoyed ourselves. We liked the layout of the house and proximity to the beach. However, the house could use some improvements to bring it into the 21st century. This would be a 4-star review if they had wifi.

      What we liked:
-Layout was excellent, especially for older folks. My grandparents really appreciated having a bedroom on the main floor. It was also great that they could walk all the way to the gazebo and have a good view of the beach without having to use any steps.
-We liked having several different group areas (the main living room, the loft, and the downstairs den), since this let people spread out and do different things.
-It was very close to the beach!
-The pool and hot tub were nice features. The pool is fairly small, but still refreshing after a day at the beach. They were both pretty clean.
-Everything was clean and well maintained. Some of the appliances are a little older, but they worked just fine.
-I don't know why everyone complains about the deck. Sure, it's not brand new but it seemed well maintained and we didn't have any issues with splinters.
-The pool table was fun, but the room it's in is pretty cramped, so sometimes the shots were at pretty awkward angles.

      What needs improvement:
-There is no wifi!!! Biggest beef we had. Just adding wifi would easily bump this up to a 4-star review.
-The location is right next to public beach access, so it got a bit crowded. But we just set up a canopy at our preferred spot and left it there all week, so it wasn't too bad. And anyway, OBX crowded is less crowded than practically anywhere else.
-While I'm all for using native plants for the lawn, something in the front yard has a lot of burrs and needs to be removed. Almost everyone got at least one burr in the foot, and many got them inside from them being tracked in.
-The TVs are all pretty old/small and some do not have cable.
-The spiral staircase is very rickety and steep. But there's another staircase, so if you don't like it you don't have to use it.

In short, this is a pretty good house for what it is. If you go in expecting the luxuries of the new McMansions popping up all around, you will be disappointed. But if you go in expecting a good value on an older but well maintained house, you'll be satisfied.

      Below average house

Left on 07/26/2012 for a stay in July 2012

House is older and needs updating. A/C was not able to keep up with hot weather - during the day the inside temperature was up to 84 degrees and high 70s at night. No Internet. Old TVs with limited channels. Oceafront location was great with private walkway to beach and gazebo dune deck. Only downside to location was it is right next to public walkway and beach was always over crowded in the area in front of house. Surprised Resort Realty rents this house out - would not stay there again.

Thanks for taking the time to review "Whale Spray". The houses in our rental program are individually owned and are furnished to the owner's wishes. Unfortunately, this owner doesn't wish to provide internet or wireless service at this time. In checking the maintenance records we do note that there was a problem with the air conditioning system, but it was resolved. Hopefully, all will be cool for the summer of 2013. We look forward to seeing you again!

      The beach was great.

Very unhappy with the property. It was not taken care of properly over the years. Appliances were old and worn. Deck is in need of replacement around the entire house. When Resort Reality was informed of the concerns they said they could only schedule someone to possible fix the problems, just what I want on vacation to have construction work going on while I am at the beach.

We regret these guests did not appreciate the most important amenities of this house. Every bedroom has private access to a bathroom and its own beach view and deck access. The decks were replaced in 2010 and the gazebo repaired in 2011.
All TV's are equipped with DVD players and two of them have been replaced with LED flat screen units. All kitchen appliances are in very good condition and are approximately 5 years old. This house has been kept at a very economic rate for beachfront property with a private gazebo and pool. There were some cable interruptions while the house on the adjacent lot was being constructed. The cable company has repaired the severed service line. For those who want a very convenient, comfortable, affordable house on a beautiful beach, this is the one. For those who want home theater or arcade-like electronics by the beach, look elsewhere. The other reviews show that nearly all previous renters have been very satisfied with their experience in WhaleSpray. We regret that there are a very few who had expectations and priorities beyond what this house on the ocean was designed to fulfill.

This was an older house compared to the new starter castles in the neighborhood. We couldn't get the hottub to work and it did not have cable tv. The house served our needs because it was not brand new and was therefore more comfortable. It was hot so we put up a few 10x10 tent shelters and converted the hot decks to usable outside space. The only problem were the biting flies that were annoying. Other than that it was a great week and would rent the place again.

Great week as usual and your service was good

Left on 07/22/2011 for a stay in July 2011

The air went out the 3rd day but you had people out very quickly and resolved the issue. For the 2nd year in a row the cable went out (same house) but we I think the construction next store may have been the cause. Your people once again were very polite and very helpful. The house had improvements since last year and we really enjoyed the week. We had the whole family with us (12 people) from age 2 to 92 and all found a good time.

      The perfect sunrise location!

Left on 07/06/2011 for a stay in June 2011

This is the second time we have stayed in Whale Spray. On this trip there were 11 people ranging from 3 yrs old to 55 yrs old. It was great for all ages! The house is in good shape and in a perfect location. We always enjoy the gazebo. It is perfect for watching the sunrise in the morning and hanging out in the evening. We also keep out chairs adn umbrellas there each night when we return from the beach. My only complaints are that there is no internet access and the pool. It is very rare for a house to not have internet these days and it made it very difficult for us to do work. We had to travel to a place and pay for wifi access. Also in out opinion the pool does not get cleaned often enough. With the amount of sand, by day 2 or 3 it is in bad shape. It was clean when we got there adn once in teh middle of the week, but I wish it would have been cleaned 2 times that week. The house is located in a perfect place and is very nice on the inside. Overall, it was very nice.

Left on 06/16/2010 for a stay in June 2010

Being oceanfront was wonderful. The home provided plenty of space for our family group. The only complaints are that I believe the grill should be upgraded to a gas grill instead of charcoal, some of the nails need to be repaired on the decking, and some sort of wash bin should be provided to wash off your feet before you go into the pool. Those are minor items in the big picture. It was beautiful inside and the view was awesome!

A great way to return to the Outer Banks

Left on 06/02/2010 for a stay in May 2010

We have spent many summer vacations in Corolla but have been away from it for about six years due to three kids in college and all the expenses and schedules that go along with it.
I gave the family a weeks vacation at the beach as a Christmas gift. Despite changes in work schedules and relocations out of state the entire family got together to share this great oceanfront home. Private access to the beach was always my goal and this home met all of our needs. The renovations to this older home are nice and the space given inside for all to spread out is wonderful. A few more upgrades will probably take this house out of our budget but we loved the decor and the design of the rooms and living space. Pool table in the first level was a big hit.
I would reccommend this home to multiple families renting together or extended families who want some space for grownups.

Place was in a great location, amenities were present but worn/dated.

Upkeep of all components of house and facilities were mediocre.

Great potential, just needs some investment.

We enjoyed our stay in Corolla North Carolina, beutiful weather, excellent location but had a few issues with our stay. We had to sleep on a broken bed the week of our stay, the man=intance guy did show up(just walked in the house) but said nothing he could do ablut it. The previous renters had broken the bed and then we were the ones who had to sleep on it. That was very uncomfortable. The dirty laundrey from resort reality stayed on our front porch all week long, so every time we walked out on the front porch you had dirty laundry bags just sitting there. There were rusty nails sticking out of the porch and pool furniture and deck. But overall the stay was nice. The proxcimity to the beach was excellent and the pavillion was wonderful. The house overall was okay. The icemaker too was broken and the maintainence guy said that would be fixed also, which never did. We loved the fact that we were close to the four wheel drive section and close to the Foodlion and other shops and restuarants. corolla is one of my favorite vacation spots. Dealing with Resort Reality has been wonderful and you guys make it easy to rent by e-mail. Thanks

The location of this home is great, especially the walkway to be

Left on 07/28/2009 for a stay in June 2009

The only thing we did not like was the railings on
most of the decks were not up to code. A small
child could fall through the slats.

The two bedrooms on the first floor were very nice
to have for the older folks.

The barbeque grill needs to be replaced.

The home was clean & comfortable and was reasonably priced. It could use some upgrading and repairs such as offering internet access and fixing the torn screens. The grill area is overgrown and dirty. I noticed that the rate has jumped dramatically over last year.

Dune top Gazebo is the Key.

Left on 07/17/2009 for a stay in August 2008

This house is a nice little vacation home. It has everything a family needs to enjoy the week. One advantage is that all 5 bedrooms are oceanfront with deck access. The best part of the house is the dune top Gazebo. It is the center of our week. We spend most of our time there. Whether it is having coffee in the morning, escaping the sun in the afternoon, or socializing in the evening; it is what keeps us coming back. There are a couple of reasons we can't give the house a 4 or 5 star ratiing. The pool and hottub are fine but there should be a gate to keep children out from the mid level deck. Another disadvantage is that the pool and hottub are on the public beach access side of the house, with a constant parade of people walking by. Overall we really enjoy our time at Whalespray and look forward to it for the 4th year in a row.

Rental Co Great, Home Owner not so much

Left on 07/16/2009 for a stay in September 2008

We have stayed at Whalespray for ten plus years. It is a basic home but we loved the room configuration and the gazebo with walkway to the beach. Every year the owners always made some improvements and they were appreciated. Resort Realty has ALWAYS been professional and courteous and any and all maintenance issues or questions/concerns have always been taken care of. Recently the owner doubled the rent and we will no longer stay in this home. No major improvements are planned as stated by the owner. It is hard to rationalize the huge and inappropriate increase. The home is low key and not fancy but clean and centrally located. It is located next to a walkway to the beach so you are not afforded much privacy in the pool or hot tub. Not fancy but comfortable.

We do like the design of the house and how family traffic flows during the busy dinner, shower, etc. time.

Apparently we was the first renters of the 09 summer season. In order to enjoy the walkway to the beach we had to remove several brier type plants down the walk way just to get through and remove plants and clean up around the pool just to enjoy.

It was very obvious to us the rental company never viewed the home to see if it was ready for the summer rental season.

It's not fun spending the first two days getting the home we spent money on ready for the family to enjoy.

Very VERY disappointed in our stay. We have complained to the rental company but no word yet.

The owner has a private vendor maintaining his property. We will bring this to the vendor’s attention, so they will know to check out the pool area and walkway. Thank you for this information.”
