Dating back to the 1700's this two bedroom property oozes charm and character, there is a delightful secluded garden which overlooks the stream.
Monks Bridge was built in the 1700's as the village school. It is a house of unusual charm and character, beautifully situated on the edge of a traditional village in the Lyvennet Valley amongst gently rising fells, drystone walls and fine farms. The cottage (named after the ancient bridge over the Lyvennet) retains the original lofty ceilings and arched windows affording views over the beck, the ancient churchyard and the mature and secluded garden.
Crosby Ravensworth is located only 15... minutes from the M6 and eight miles from Appleby. There are delightful walks from the door and by car, the Eden Valley, the Lakeland fells and the Pennines are within easy reach.
Monks Bridge is all on one level, is heated by night storage heaters and wall-mounted radiators and comprises:
* Large lounge/dining area with open fire, TV, DVD player, hi-fi, dining table and a selection of books and games.

Our last-minute booking of Monk's Bridge in Crosby Ravensworth turned out to be our best ever holiday rental.
It is a truly special house, steeped in history and with seemingly every need catered for: a really well-equipped kitchen, very comfortable sitting areas & beds, plenty of logs & kindling for the fire and even candles & matches on the dining table.
With such a lovely base (and plenty of reading material provided) we were tempted to stay put, but the immediate area is a delight & this property is so well-placed for exploring the northern & eastern Lake District.
The local (community) pub The Butcher's arms, just a few minutes walk away, serves very good, plentiful food & offers a warm welcome.
We loved eating breakfast in the sun room each morning, looking out directly on the beck and watching ducks & wagtails go by. A real fire each evening was pretty wonderful too.
We would recommend this cottage to anyone who appreciates established gardens, interesting old houses/antiques and good old-fashioned peace and quiet on their holidays. We loved it.
Peace and tranquility.

Monks Bridge was a last minute booking and it was everything you could want, comfortable bed, open fire and just a feeling of welcome in the place. The
area was not somewhere we had been before but will certainly go again, plenty of walks from the doorstep and the Lake District not too far away.No Sky tv,no internet, which to be honest I thought we would miss nut it was good to be away from it,even listened to a football match on the radio! I would love to spend Christmas or New Year in this homely house.A local Ordinance survey map would be good. Read more

Well, firstly i will say that the pictures don't do the cottage justice. It's even better than one can expect.
The rooms are spaceous, bedrooms are elegant yet quaint and the lounge benefits from a wonderful open fire. The kitchen has everything you need; just be aware the nearest supermarket is 8 miles away in appleby so come prepared! Built in the 1800's as the original school the cottage has a grandure you don't normally get from cottages usually. The ceilings are high and rooms very spacious.
The garden was lovely, and in the morning it was nice to sit in the sun room and look out onto the beck while having breakfast. This cottage really is a perfect couples retreat. I can't recommend it enough infact. Perfect for walkers there are plenty of walks nearby, you really do need a car if you're staying at Monks Bridge and i would be wary in the winter time because of the roads... my fiat 500 would struggle! The local community pub serves lovely food it's well worth a visit.
Now, the niggles; word of warning for visitors, I found that there was literally no phone signal on either o2, 3 or vodafone within a 5 mile radius of the cottage. I didn't mind because for me this made the stay all the more appealing!! No social networking distractions!! With this in mind it's best to plan your outings in advance because the cottage does not have internet although there is a landline with which you can use to call other landline numbers for free. I think that if the cottage had wifi and a larger television because the one in there was more like a PC screen. I really am being picky there, the cottage is a 10/10 in my book and i'll definitely be re-visiting. Read more
We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at this property.
The location of the property is perfect for those wanting a little peace and quiet, but a car would certainly be required.
Unfortunately due to the rural location of this property telephone signals can be very temperamental. Wi Fi has been suggested to our owners and there are several who are now looking into this for their properties.
Your comments will certainly be passed on to the owners for their information.
We hope to welcome you back in the future.

This is a great place to stay - well placed, nicely equipped and with some good antique touches, the conversion of the old village school is located within a stones throw of the church and close to an old stone bridge where two small rivers meet. The conservatory room at the rear is a great place to chill and watch the wildlife and the agricultural activities at the farm beyond.
The master bedroom is very comfortable with a good quality bed. The garden bedroom which is very nicely decorated has the ensuite shower room. For a 4 person property this is incredibly spacious, feels like home from home. It was clean on arrival and the gardens are very well maintained.
The only slight criticism is that in common with many older properties the garden bedroom can smell rather musty so best to keep a window open overnight if sleeping in there.
This property is well placed for the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall and the Yorkshire Dales and its great to come home to after a long day of exploring.

We stayed for 3 days this spring and had a fantastic time. The cottage is beautiful and the original features of the schoolhouse give you a feel for the buildings original use as well as the history that is still there for you to see if you look closely enough. The storage heaters don't quite put out enough heat in the colder months but there are additional heaters for the bedrooms provided and frankly it just gives you a good excuse to get under the blankets and get a roaring fire going. The house has everything you need to make for a really good stay and the village also has a pub which is run by the locals and does some great food. Always a good idea to book but the guys there will try and accomodate you if you can't. Pick up some supplies on the way as theres no local shop but this all adds to the charm of what is a fantastic property.

Booking was done with ease, really quick and friendly.
Monks Bridge is a magical place that feels warm and homely. It has amazing history all throughout the house, is well equipped with all you could need. It's location is simply stunning with a beautiful garden to sit in if you have the weather, if not you can sit in the comfort of a conservatory style room that overlooks the water and wild life surrounding you, we spent hours just relaxing and watching the ducks, red squirrels and birds. Crosby is a lovely picturesque village, with lots of other wonderful places close by. We will defiantly be returning next year.

Great place, but quite a drive to lakes, but all part of the fun. Super place, with 2 rivers, the boys enjoyed building dams, feeding the ducks and river walking. Local pub excellent, food is superb. Warm welcome from everybody we met. Off the beaten track, but lots of History, and good base to explore from.
What a lovely place to stay

We had a lovely stay at Monks Bridge Cottage. The accommodation was really nice, full of atmosphere and the enclosed garden made it very private. It was lovely just to sit in the sun room and watch the water go by and to see the many birds and animals that came to vist.
The village was quite, but close enough to the main attractions.
If you are looking for a peaceful holiday with the options to visit the Lakes I could not recommend a nicer place to stay.

a wonderful property set in a wonderful location very tranquil with the beck running alongside ideally situated for visits to the lakes or north Yorkshire local coop at Shap which is 3 miles from property or appleby which is a lovely market town 8 miles away the local community owned pub does excellent food with friendly staff. The property has a land line kindly provided by the owners whichis included in the price of the property so you can keep in touch with family in the uk on their land lines mobile and international calls are barred. This is because the mobile phone signal is non existent at the property or in the village. All in all we had a thoroughly comfortable and enjoyable stay.
Relaxing, away from it all.

Everything was very simple, from browsing the cottages, to booking the one we choose to following the directions, there was no stress and the service we received was great.
Monks Bridge itself was great, even better than the website claimed, it was homely, comfortable and excellently equipped. Effort had been made to make it feel like you were being welcomed into someones home rather than staying in an impersonal chalet or hotel.
Although Monks Bridge is out of the way, there being only a pub within walking distance (though it is an excellent pub with great food and freindly staff), local places of interest are within an easy drive, Kendal, the Lakes, Penrith are all within an hour, and then you return to peace and tranquility, my favourite part of the stay, sitting in the sun room with a glass of wine, watching the ducks on the bek, totally relaxed.

Monks Bridge was a beautiful property, clean, warm and very comfortable. We were in the area during some of the most severe weather in June 2012. That did not affect our holiday at all, on one of the worst days we lite a log fire, poured some gin & tonics and enjoyed this lovely house!!
Well worth the journey there from Devon. As far as we were concerned Monks Bridge earns 10/10 on all counts. Location, cleanliness etc.etc.

Lovely cottages, modernised inside. Beautiful open fire and garden next to the stream. Comfortable beds and very clean.
Situated in a pretty village. Pub down the road. Only one disadvantage no internet - for looking up where to go the next day.
Would like to see Tea/Coffee facilities (perhaps with a Cumbrian cake) on arrival, as nearest shops are 7 miles away in appleby.

We stayed at the cottage in September 2011. The cottage is superb and locality is good - only 20 miles in any direction to the main tourist attractions and lakes. It was heaven returning in the evenings to a cosy log fire.
I could not fault anything about this holiday.
Thanks to the owners who certainly take pride in their cottage.
I would definately book this cottage again.

Stayed ealier in the year when unfortunately the sewer works were outside. We abandoned early and promised to return because we liked the house. The house is turned out really well by a local lady. The pub was closed and has now reopened as a community pub so a meal out is easy. The house is ideal for two couples with good facilities. Our only problem was storage heaters. They run out of steam by the end of a cool day and even supplemented by the fire extra input was needed to make the huge sitting room comforable. A lovely place to stay.
