I used Tripadvisor to find this spot - did a lot of homework looking for places all over St. John. We're glad we chose the Hillcrest. Phyllis will pick you up at the ferry, but my wife and I had a car we rented in St. Thomas so we drove directly to the aptly named Hillcrest directly from the barge. She had a general idea when we'd arrive and was there to meet us with a friendly face and a happy hello. We asked to look at the other rooms available as we had decided on the tropical garden because of its larger size. The 3 rooms overlooking the bay were smaller and had a better view than my room, but we will still take the larger room next time we come. Phyllis treats you right and provides everything you need for a day at the beach - coolers, beach chairs, snorkle equipment etc., she also stocks the kitchen with some breakfast food, fruit, and a bottle of rum or some other liquor of your choosing. St. John has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world - I recommend a car (if renting in St. Thomas know that problems you might have on St. John will be your problems - they want you to stay on St. Thomas - but cars can be rented on St. John). A lot of places recommend a 4 wheel drive jeep but we did fine in a 2 wheel drive Ford escort. Eat at the Fish Trap and try the Lime Inn. Go to Trunk Bay ($4/ea) for a great beach and beautiful water, snorkle in Leinster Bay (about 3/4 mile walk after parking your car), the water is perfectly clear and the fish & turtles are plentiful. We also spent 3 days in St. Thomas.

We took the rental car over on the ferry from St. Thomas (a good idea by the way) and of course promptly got lost. Called Phyllis and she drove to us and led us back to her place! She then let us stash our bags (we were 5 hours early for check-in), lent us beach towels and sent us off to play. Everything we needed she provided. Comfortable, clean and all the extras mentioned previously. Walking distance to town. Small room but heck, who goes to St. John to stay inside? Would definitely go back.

If I could give the Hillcrest Guesthouse more stars I would. The room was extremely beautiful, the view was breath taking and the owner was extremely nice and informative. She was able to answer all my questions about the island, places to eat, where to rent a car and places to shop. And believe it or not there was free food already in the room when we arrived. I love the fact that if you let her know in advance if you need somethings added or taken off the menu, she will do it. She also picks you up from the boat when you arrive and drops you off when you leave. I love this place! It was really a home away from home.
