Description from the owner
Calypso del Sol's best feature is the glorious, endless water views from the pool deck and the large, covered porches, with inviting views of Chocolate Hole and gorgeous sunsets. You can relax around the large pool -- our second best feature -- or take a short walk to Chocolate Hole Beach or over the hill to Hart Bay. The house is beautifully appointed to offer every comfort in a close-in but private location, while making the most of its Caribbean setting. It has the feeling of a very private hideaway.
The living room is furnished with traditional Caribbean furniture. With vaulted ceilings, ceiling fans, tiled floors, and Caribbean ar...Read more

Centreville, MarylandCharming cottage that could have been better
Left on 05/21/2013 for a stay in May 2011
I submitted this review 2 years ago and it never was posted so I am re-posting now based on my experiences then. Please not that some of the issues I mention may very well have been rectified by now.
After much research, we decided on Calypso based on the good reviews I had read, the close proximity to Cruz Bay, pool/hot tub, screened in porch and full aC. I am sure part of it was my high expectations after the great villa experience we had last year in St. Martin, but I was a little disappointed with our choice. There were a number of minor issues including ripped screens/lounge chairs, a pool that was in major need of re-surfacing, an unpleasant odor in the villa that lingered all week and not enough beach towels. On the plus side, the grounds were lush and a favorite ritual of ours every morning was to count how many iguanas we could spot in the trees, the kitchen was well stocked, the bathrooms were nice and the showers very large (a second shower head in each would be a great addition) and the villa owner was great to work with. It was fine for the week but I wouldnβt stay there again. The bedrooms not being connected to the main house was more annoying than I thought it would be and I really missed the expansive view. And there is no view from the pool. -

Baltimore, MarylandWonderful house with amazing views and great location for explor
Left on 02/04/2013 for a stay in January 2013
This 3 bedroom villa is very comfortable with fabulous views of Chocolate Hole and sunsets. The owner was easy to work with and very helpful. The local management company was excellent. We liked having a Weber gas grill to cook on, and we ate most of our dinners at the house--didn't want to miss sunset. The kitchen was well equipped, the bathrooms spacious and the house furniture was very comfortable. The location is great because it's close to the Market and Cruz Bay yet quiet, and it's not a windy part of the island. The house is very well maintained. The swimming pool is beautiful though too cold for me to actually use in January because evening temperatures were in the 50s. The hot tub was great. There were beach chairs, beach towels, coolers that came in handy. Every day we snorkeled, hiked, or went exploring St. John. It was great to watch the iguanas and birds from the porch. The Wi-fi worked well enough to let us get necessary work done. The only thing I didn't like is the really old non-flat screen TV in the living room--it's hard to watch although we did get to see our Ravens beat New England on it! I would love to go back.

Bethesda, MarylandWe'll be back!
Left on 01/03/2013 for a stay in December 2012
Our family - 4 adults and 2 teens - had a fantastic time at Calypso del Sol. The place is beautiful, so well maintained and we enjoyed the perfect layout with three nice spacious and completely private bedrooms plus the gorgeous view plus the large hottub after too much snorkling. We watched iguanas and sunsets from the beautiful porch and only regretted that our stay could not be longer ... this was our first time on St. John and we loved its many great beaches and good restaurants as well as the totally relaxed atmosphere all around. Access to everything was easy from Calypso and I hope we can find a way to get back there rather sooner than later!

Austin, TexasDreamy Jungle Hideaway
Left on 12/29/2012 for a stay in November 2012
First, Calypso del Sol was so comfortable. Everything was there that we needed. It was a jungle hideaway with a dreamy view and plenty of privacy. I liked the place better every day of our stay. The location was just right - close to the activity of Cruz Bay yet out of the fray.
We loved the iguanas. They were as curious as we were. If we sat quietly by the pool, here they'd come down the trees to get a better look. If we were on the top deck, here they'd climb up the trees to get a better look. One three-foot long one came onto the pool deck while we were sunning. Loved him. The first night, something in the jungle was very noisy and upset through much of the night. We guessed Raptor or wild monkey. We later decided that we had disturbed the iguanas by moving into the house, and then the next day they, or whatever it was, calmed down and were used to us.
On Thanksgiving Day, we snorkeled at Trunk Bay and had dinner at Caneel Bay Resort. Susie recommended it for lunch. She said the buffet lunch was worth the $30. We thought dinner might be $50, try $80 per person! Still, it was another incredible setting on the water and we actually got to have turkey on Thanksgiving.
I would say that our favorite part of the trip was exploring the absolutely white beaches and turquoise water of the bays and then retiring to our lovely place each evening to relax, swim in the pool and watch the sun go down. We read and caught a little football, too.
The best snorkeling that we found was at Salt Marsh. For me, the best restaurant setting and food was Lucy's. The Grouper lunch plate won. We were in search of the next fried Grouper most of the trip, it seems.
Do you know that neither of us bought one souvenir? My mosquito bites and my suntan still linger though. I especially like the suntan.
We loved our time and we were happy that we chose Calypso. It was pretty perfect for us. Thank you to Sally for superior customer service and being so accommodating.

OhioThe Perfect Vacation at Calypso del Sol!
Left on 01/20/2012 for a stay in January 2012
Our family just recently returned from our vacation to St. John, where we spent 9 nights at Calypso del Sol. The vacation was fantastic, and we attribute that largely to our wonderful stay at Calypso del Sol. From the beginning we received a lot of help and information from Sally (one of the owners). She played an intricate part in helping us to plan our vacation, even after we had booked her place. Once on the island, their contact Nancy was easy to reach, pleasant to talk to, and a big help.
There were 6 adults (3 couples) in our group and we fit very comfortably. Everyone had their own bedroom and bathroom and the accommodations were very nice (spacious, clean rooms and huge bathrooms with double sinks in all). There is a lot of outdoor space at the house, with decks wrapping around both levels. They have very nice furniture and we enjoyed sitting in the rocking chairs in the morning eating our breakfast and drinking coffee outside, we would have meals in the screened in porch, and utilized the grill for cooking in often! While we enjoyed travelling around the island to explore the different beaches, we also very much enjoyed just relaxing by the pool at the house. The pool is pretty large (especially in comparison to some of the pools at other homes), and there were enough lounge chairs and space for all 6 of us to spread out around the pool. It was a nice alternative to having to travel to the beach.
The location is very convenient to the market, shopping, restaurants, beaches, bars etc. It is close to everything and easy to get to and from. We would highly recommend staying at Calypso del Sol for any group or family that is looking for comfort, relaxation, and convenience!

Washington DCHad an unbelievable time - marvelous experience.

The house is in an incredibly beautiful spot, and St. John is the closest thing to paradise we have ever seen. If you like a relaxed atmosphere with remote beaches and water so clear it is hard to believe (fantastic snorkeling) then this is a place not to be missed.
The house itself is beautiful, pleasant appointments, great amenities. It was a very comfortable stay for 4 people, seems it would be equally so for 6. -

This was our second stay at Calypso del Sol and the first time we were there with our three adult children. We found Calypso a perfect home-away-from home. Perched over Chocolate Bay, it is beautifully sited morning, noon and night for lovely and interesting views. The pool and the porches were favorite spots for relaxing, reading and talking. The bedrooms and the downstairs porch offer privacy while the main floor offers space for everyone in shared or separate activities. We enjoyed sunning, eating, hiking, snorkeling and generally exploring St. John. It was a perfect retreat for our family at a time when the beauty and peace of Calypso was much needed, an oasis from which we returned restored and refreshed.

Alpharetta, GAFantastic villa - great location and wonderful view!
Left on 06/08/2010 for a stay in May 2010
Calypso Del Sol is a fantastic villa with great views inside and out. The porches are amazing and the large pool was so relaxing. The beach chairs and the cooler were great to take to the many beaches on St. John. The location is so convient to Cruz Bay and the market, and yet it is very quiet and private as well (can't see your neighbors at all). The villa inside was very clean and nice, and we particularly enjoyed the great view from the master bedroom when waking up in the morning! Also, the bathroom is big and the shower is huge, with a lot of water pressure - wonderful! Everything about this villa is fantastic, and we hope to return some day!

My husband and I, our two children, and my parents had an absolute dream vacation at Calypso del Sol. The amenities are what you would find at home, too many to list, every comfort imaginable with an exquisite view and a very pleasant and helpful property manager. While it was a great vacation with children, the house can very easily accomodate three couples. St. John is a magical island and we were very happy to have found such a perfect house.

Add to Carol's comments that I was the designated driver. It was really convenient to Cruz Bay, the local markets and as a center for day trips. Cruz Bay had really good food and the best looking dress ever for my granddaughter (4 at the time). The house is 2 level, spacious, well laid out, outfitted & landscaped. The house elevation provides light breezes and an excellent photo platform. The bigger the lense zoom range the better. I caught amazing cloud formations, the bay, the flowers & birds, the colorful sail boats and cruise ships, all from the veranda. I especially enjoyed watching the unique hummingbirds close up from the veranda- irridescent with spiked head feathers.

From the time we arrived in St. Thomas until we left our stay was fantastic. We were met by a jovial, entertaining driver who delivered us to the Red Hook ferry. Once in Cruz Bay, we were met by the rental manager who helped us get our rental car and then took us to the Villa. What a joy to step into a relaxing, beautiful setting. From the wine and cheese and flowers to the refreshing swim in the pool, our stay was outstanding. The appointments in the kitchen enabled us to eat at the "Villa Restaurant" and enjoy many of the local cuisine. How restful to come home from a day at the beach or sightseeing, take a dip in the pool and then relax on the porch with a cool drink and light refreshments.
The beds were comfortable and so we enjoyed a good night's sleep.
The same driver met us when it was time to leave our paradise. Since we had some time to kill in St Thomas he introduced us to his favorite restaurant and we were able to shop without lugging our suitcases around.
We have recommended Calypso del Sol to many friends.
We hope to return again soon. -

This was our second visit to St. Johns but first time in Calypso del Sol. We loved Calypso del Sol's amenities -- it's private pool, location on the island and proximity to downtown, the views, the great room and porch, the well equipped kitchen because we like to cook some of our meals ourselves -- we had a great time.
