East Patchogue, NYWonderful Stay at Heron's Roost
Left on 03/20/2013 for a stay in March 2013
I just completed a week's stay at the Heron's Roost with my wife, my sister and her husband and my cousin and his wife. Our stay was just what we were looking for. The home and the amenities were as depicted in the photos and descriptions. The location (Mm21.5) was far enough from Key West that the ambience was not affected by the hub bub that was present there during spring break week. But It was just a short drive to KW and we did venture there on a Saturday afternoon. Although enjoyable for a short time we much preferred the quieter existence the Roost provided. Back on Cudjoe Key, guides were available at reasonable prices, but we rented kayaks and explored the area from the waterside on our own time and at our own pace. That gave us plenty of time to stop and take in the natural habitat - interesting waterfowl, marine life and iguanas the size of small allegators. We did go to the public beach one day at Behai State Park. Not much expanse of sandy beach, but the water was a beautiful turquoise and very comfortable at 73 degrees. Still though, we enjoyed our time around pool at the Roost more. As to dining, we did make use of the BBQ grill provided on two occasions, but the other evenings we dined out at various establishments: The Square Grouper, Boondock's, Mangrove Mama's, Crab Shack and Taste of Paradise. All are within 5-10 minutes of the house and we found all to provide good food at reasonable prices. Mind you, none are fancy and if you're looking for white linen service you won't find it here. This is sand, beach and water country and that's what the local establishments portray. And there are no fast food, franchise restaurants. These are local, mom and pop types. All's good, all enjoyable and we do intend to book another week's stay next year.

Anniversary Family
Baltimore, MDThis house is very comfortable and a great place to relax.
Left on 02/09/2012 for a stay in February 2012
I wanted to write on behalf of my family about our week at Heron's Roost. We had a tricky time locating your house after dark, but we were very pleased with what we found. Your place is awesome, just like the pictures on Vrbo. It has everything we needed to be comfortable and entertained. The pool which was partially shaded was wonderful. We also enjoyed the hammock, pier, and upper deck. The large kitchen allowed several of us to work together.
Thanks for the many recommendations for restaurants. We tried many of them and were never disappointed.
I would recommend Heron's Roost for people not planning to spend every day in downtown Key West. -

46696Wonderful Keys Vacation Home
Left on 01/08/2012 for a stay in January 2012
We found the house, property and location delightful. It’s a terrific home for a Keys vacation. The location is great for getting all the Keys can offer – Key West is a quick 30-minute drive away. And for some of the Keys nature fun Big Pine Key and Bahia Honda Key are about 10 miles north. The house itself is delightful too. It is nicely furnished with everything you’ll need to make your stay comfortable. We found it immaculate when we checked in. The location is private and nicely landscaped -- and the heated pool was a very nice amenity especially for a January visit. We enjoyed every bit of our stay at Heron’s Roost and recommend it highly.

The location was 25 minutes from key west. The house was very nice and well maintained. We had so much fun just hanging around the house. The pool was clean and heated and the property was in great shape. Excellent views from the dock. The only downside was that there was not a real beach, but instead a docking ramp for boats. I would definitely rec this place to other renters.
Response from Linda H Spencer - 12/29/2011
Owner
Thanks for the good words Kevin but not sure why you would say 'the only downside was that there was not a real beach.....etc"? There is a ramp that goes into the water but can't be used for boats really since it drops off and there is a nice little sandy area by the ocean and hammock. Sounds negative that I don't have a "real" beach but not sure why you were expecting one. In any case we try hard and hope that if you spent your time 'hanging around the house and pool and property' doesn't sound like it couldn't have been much better than this!

Kodak, TNBeautiful Property!
Left on 09/12/2011 for a stay in May 2011
We had a great time at the "Roost!" It was beautiful - spacious, relaxing, private, lovely pool, great view, amazing tropical landscaping. It was very clean, well-maintained, and is was more beautiful than the photos. The landscaping made us feel like we were in our own private tropical paradise! It is close enough to Key West; a favorite place for us to eat out and shop. The dock was a beautiful place to watch the sunset, and also watch fish and sea life in the water. The covered parking was also a plus. We want to return next year. We highly recommend!

New Lenox, ILGreat Quiet Place, Bad Beds
Left on 02/28/2011 for a stay in January 2011
The home was difficult to find initially at night until we established landmarks. We found the home clean, comfortable and well appointed. We had a couple of minor issues (DVD Player and Stereo), that the host had someone there within 30 minutes. Great service! The groundskeepers and pool people were unobtrusive, which fit into the quiet setting. The swimming pool temperature was perfect. The outdoor shower was welcomed after hard games of ping pong. The BBQ Grill was very clean and worked well for us. We looked forward to watching the sunsets as depicted on the Vrbo site, but they were obstructed by rooftops and trees. In order to view any sunsets, we had to walk out onto the pier. Sleeping conditions were very poor. We alternated between the 2 king beds to find the better of the 2 mattresses. They were both horrible! Overall, Heron's Roost was a great vacation spot except for the 10 nights of poor sleep and aching backs every morning.
Response from Linda H Spencer - 12/29/2011
Owner
So sorry you weren't able to sleep but I really need to respond to your comments about how "horrible" the beds were. I rent to 48 different groups a year and have for 5 years at Heron's Roost and you are the FIRST person who has complained about the beds. But to your point we've bought new mattresses, we are an 'aim to please' vacation home!

Left on 02/11/2010 for a stay in October 2009
Linda,
We loved our stay in your beautiful home. Fishing from the dock, relaxing
by the pool, playing ping pong, and enjoying the gorgeous view were all
exactly what we wanted. The house was immaculate and the decor was
superb! We didn't need anything that wasn't there.
We found the wildlife amazing and the peacefulness of nature surrounded
us. However the proximity to Key West made it perfect. It was far enough
away to be peaceful, but close enough to play, shop, and experience the
night life.
It was wonderful to have our boat right there at the dock, and putter around
in the shallows. The fish were gorgeous and we saw a huge sea turtle just
around the curve. This was the best vacation we have had in several years;
it truly was paradise.
Thank you for sharing and hopefully we'll be back soon!
Sincerely,
The Salters -

Aston, PAThe best family vacation we've had!!
Left on 02/04/2010 for a stay in February 2009
We had a wonderful time at this beautiful, clean home with all the comforts you'd want in a vacation home. The location is close enough to Key West to get there in no time, yet far enough away to feel secluded in the Keys. We all loved the pool! We definitely want to come back soon!

Green Cove Springs, FLCudjoe Key Beauty
Left on 02/03/2010 for a stay in August 2009
The acommdations at Ms. Spencer's property were very nicely maintained and
convenient to most shopping necesities as well as entertainment.
The only slightly negative issue is the ability to navigate Cudjoe Bay in a boat.
The water is extremely shallow and requires idling for at least 1/2 a mile to
enter the normal channel. You would be best served by talking to the people
who live next door to get the lay of the land before setting off for the deep
blue.
The fishing was great, the sunsets fantastic and the cheese burgers were truly
in paradise.Response from Linda H Spencer - 02/05/2010
Owner
We have 4 - 8 foot depth at the dock and we have an area of about 1000 feet that is muddy bottom and shallow at DEAD LOW TIDE ONLY. I've had hundreds of boats there and everyone gets a map from me before they go of how to get in and out with no problems. The Lower Keys has shallow water everywhere and so caution needs to be taken. You mention 1/2 mile to enter the channel which isn't necessary. You simply go straight out from our house, navigating the shallower water by lifting your engine, go into the bay which is plenty deep and then in deep water go wherever you want to.

I have had the pleasure of spending time at this unit on numerous occasions over the last several years. I never tire of this location with its great views and tropical climate. Lots of amenities including a heated pool, ping pong table, gas grill, outdoor shower, washer and dryer, flat screen TV, boat dock and all the things I look for when considering a place to get away. The place is well maintained and very clean.

Linda,
Our visit was perfect. The house is perfectly located to provide access to great diving, snorkelling, and lobstering. The view from the balcony is marvelous, the kitchen/dining room layout was perfect and we loved the big table where we could all eat together. Thanks for sharing with us!
