Culebra is a very small island yet is abundant with many beaches, cays, places to walk, kayak, bike, and relax. Our beaches are numerous and, if you are looking for a private beach, you certainly can find that secret spot! Culebra goes to sleep fairly early, and nighttime is a wonderful time to really wind down with typical bar hopping, sitting in the plaza, walking into...Read more

San Juan, Puerto RicoComfortable, great location, and friendly...
Left on 05/17/2013 for a stay in May 2012
We stayed here last year and I this is still one of the best vacations I have ever had. First of all, Culebra is a special place. It is quiet, relaxing, and has beautiful beaches. Go here is you can find a way! Mango Fish was the perfect spot for us. The owners are wonderful...you get picked up at the airport and are given a tour of the island. The guest house has everything you need. It is quiet, cool, and just flat out relaxing. There is a grocery store right down the street...I think just 3 houses down. Compared to other parts of Puerto Rico (we lived on the main island for 3 years), the store is actually well stocked. Pretty amazing considering the remoteness of the island. You can grab some bread and sandwich stuff, chips, and drinks and pack your picnic for the beach (which you need to do, as there are limited facilities at the most remote beaches). Mango Fish was clean and the owners are so sweet and helpful. I would definitely stay here again...hopefully we will make it back to Culebra soon.

Left on 05/13/2013 for a stay in March 2013
We arrived via plane from San Juan, which was a great choice. Fred met us promptly at the airport, gave us a ~1 hour tour, and much welcomed and very helpful advice.
Fred and Lori know the latest on all things local - the best restaurants (El Cayobo - wow!), info on the beaches, stores, etc.
They also have a passion for the island's nature, people, etc. Fred knew all kinds of nuances regarding the wildlife including when and where to snorkel and find sea turtles (his advice paid off - we saw some), where the surf is calm or active, and all kinds of other things. Lori, a local philanthropist, also brought warmth to her work as the host, and was very attentive to our needs and wants in preparing and furnishing the guesthouse, frequently checking to make sure we were having a great visit, and maintaining a yard packed with beautiful plants which were exotic to us, and provided chances to see incredible little animals who also seemed to enjoy them.
The guesthouse captures the island's unique spirit. It is comfortably sized, very clean. It meets all your basic needs and provides the little extras that will make you glad to be there; including many personal care products, a medical kit, clean cookware, books, several comfortable places to rest, internet, several sizes of snorkling gear, a cooler, towels, beach chairs.
Mango Fish is subject to all parts of Culebra's unique charm - it takes a few minutes to get to the beach and the town center in a golf cart or rental care, and the island's native roosters will let you know it's morning - both of which were welcomed by us, but may not be loved by all. Potential guests should think this over when making their choice; if you can smile or laugh at these circumstances like we did, you will love this wonderful, special place. -

Mango Fish Guesthouse was everything as advertised. The cottage was neat, convenient to beaches and town. Rental vehicles and the airport were lterally a short walk away and groceries were just next door. Our hosts were great and included a tour of the island. We would highly recommend Mango Fish Guesthouse.

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful three night stay at the Mango Fish Guesthouse! Lori made booking the property very easy and Fred picked us up at the airport upon our arrival. He gave us a thorough tour of the island and gave us great recommendations on restaurants, snorkeling beaches, and the best spots to watch the sunset on the island. The guesthouse was very cute and clean and very close to a little grocery store. Lori and Fred were friendly and welcoming and provided beach chairs, towels and snorkeling equipment. We rented a golf cart for three days and would definitely recommend it! You can take a taxi bus (publico) around the island but we found it much easier to rent the golf cart because we liked to beach hop with all of our snorkeling equipment and beach chairs during the day. The island is very quiet and a wonderful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of every day life. We completely fell in love with Culebra and had a relaxing, peaceful and restoring stay at the Mango Fish Guesthouse!

We stayed at Mango Fish for 10 days in January, and enjoyed every last drop... Lori & Fred are the most amazing hosts- friendly, knowledgable, accomodating, and just fun to talk to. Not only is the Mango Fish a comforatble and cozy little bungalow, the location is fantastic. My husband and I easily walked into town for dinner, and to Tamarindo beach to snorkel with the turtles (a tip off from Fred). There are so many extras at this guesthouse that make it feel like home, inlcuding beach chairs, which feel like a total indulgence when you're on vacation with a backpack. This place is an absolute gem on a beautiful and fun island. If we ever return, we will stay here without hesitation, but until then, we will recommend it to all of our family and friends. Best deal on the island, travelers! Many thanks to Lori and Fred!!!

Jeep rentals just down the street , grocery store just a 2 minute walk away ,all the restaurants downtown are within walking distance ( 10-15 minutes ).
Very clean and cozy casita, do yourself a favor and stay there !!!

This clean and well provisioned guest house was greatly enhanced by Fred's personal attention, such as his great tour of the island and sharing with us some fresh coconut water picked from his very own garden and hacked open with a machete, much to our 2 year old son's delight. There was great attention to the little details that are simple necessities on this island. A grocery store was within walking distance. Lori and Fred made us feel at home in their sweet little guest house. We hope to return.

We spent part of our December holiday in Culebra and were pleased to find Mango Fish Guesthouse hosts were especially welcoming. Fred's tour allowed us to map out where to go to eat, play and enjoy this beautiful island. The accommodations were comfortable and close enough to walk to Flamenco beach (about 1 mile each way). We rented a scooter and toured most of the island in one day, spent a day at Zoni beach and watched the stars at night. Lori and Fred's embrace of the island and people and how much they have given back to the community (Lori set up a library) is inspirational.

This guesthouse was cute, well supplied, and spacious and then some for two. Lori was always available to help arrange activities or suggest a restaurant, and such a lovely friendly host that she really made the vacation. She also went the extra mile when I was injured towards the end if our stay, arranging a massage therapist and helping in any way she could.
Culebra itself was as sleepy as promised, with only two tourist shops and a small handful of open restaurants. Most places seemed to be open Wed-Sun with Mon/Tues being their adopted "weekend"- we were there in the off season, though. A rental vehicle made getting around easier, and while we'd planned in bikes the hills quickly dissuaded us.
The beaches are really the thing to do in Culebra, and they each offer something different. Our hosts arranged a great tour for us when we arrived, and that was an invaluable orientation.
We will definitely come again! -

My friends and I truly enjoyed staying at the MangoFish Guesthouse. Lori and Fred are amazing people and awesome hosts. They were so attentive to our every need, which we didn't need much. We are pretty easy going group and Lori & Fred had all of the bases covered. Fred gives a great tour of the island and describes each beach along with providing recommendations on where to eat. He even taught me how to snorkel, it was so much fun. The Casita was great for our group of four and it was so clean and well maintained. I know previous reviews stated that it wasn't for more than two people. So not true. We were very comfortable and everything that was provided suited our needs. We stocked the small fridge with food and drinks. There was complimentary coffee provided and a microwave. The coffee provided was great by the way. We brewed a pot every morning. Also, Lori and Fred provided us with beach chairs and a cooler. Yes, there was a rooster that crowed every morning but roosters are all over the island no matter where you go, it is pretty much their island. Lol. But, we weren't bothered especially with the air conditioner running most of the time. We spent most of our days and time hanging at the beautiful beaches, going on boating excursions and going out to eat & have drinks with the locals. If you plan to go to Culebra, don't not pass up a chance to stay with Fred & Lori. They are truly wonderful. We plan to stay with them again when we visit Culebra in the future.

Cypress, TexasNice Casita - Friendly Owner - Economical for a Family
Left on 07/09/2012 for a stay in July 2012
My wife and I traveled with our 23 year old son, and enjoyed our stay at Mango Fish. The casita is about 500 square feet, and, while not "roomy," it was clean, very comfortable, and met our needs. Upon our arrival, the owner (Fred) gave us a nice 45 minute tour of the island, after which we were on our own. It was nice having the aC! While the casita would sleep 4, I would say that if there are four travelers, it's better suited for two adults and two younger children. The veranda is nice, but understand there is no view. It's very convenient to a nearby mercado. You would want to have a car while on Culebra. Also, there are utensils, a small cooking plate, coffee maker, small refrigerator, and microwave, so you would not want to plan to prepare meals. The only real drawback was the fact that a neighbor now raises chickens, and the roosters are at it by 5:00 am!

We appreciate you choosing to stay with us and for taking the time to write a review. We take pride in our business and realize that vacations are precious. Fred offers a wonderful tour of the island (using past experiences of traveling overseas with high school students), and I make every effort to ensure the casita is spotless and well-equipped. We are never more than a call/text/bell away from anything our guests may need. Some good news: our neighbor's roosters (a teenage project), have been moved to the other side of their house ... 75 feet away. We do have roaming roosters and chickens, as does all of the Caribbean, and they can easily be shooed away. Most guests find that putting the fan on on the A/C unit provides enough white noise; bring ear plugs if a light sleeper. Cooking in the casita: guests who stay for several days make plenty of simple meals -- eggs, burritos, pasta, salads, hamburgers, French toast, grilled cheese, etc. We provide a high-end double hot plate, microwave, coffee maker, tea kettle, and mini fridge. We offer free Puerto Rican coffee and tea that can be prepared. It does take a bit of creativity and maneuvering to prepare a simple meal but it is fully possible. Guests on a budget, traveling with 3-4 people, will find that we are very reasonably priced. As stated in our listing -- roomy and spacious for 2, economical for 3-4. As Culebra is such a beautiful island, most guests spend their days outside, enjoying the island. Our veranda is enveloped by our many tropical plants and trees, something else we take pride in. Many of our guests relax on the veranda in the morning with their coffee or before going out for the evening. Unlike many places, we offer beach essentials such as: beach chairs, towels, coolers, and snorkeling equipment. We are here to ensure your vacation is hassle free and enjoyable!

Our stay at the Mango Fish and the island in general was wonderful. Fred and Lori are wonderful hosts; they made us feel right at home and our very knowledgable about the island. They provided us with everything we needed to head to the beach on a daily basis: chairs, umbrella, ice chest and snorkeling gear. The guest house was comfortable for two people and clean. The island itself is rustic (i.e. very little urban development) and has a quiet "nightlife", which suited our personalities perfectly. The water is absoulutely beautiful!!! We do plan on returning to Culebra and the Mango Fish.
Fyi: Fly to the island, nix the ferry ride.

Fred met us at the ferry dock and gave us the island tour which was extremely helpful. He pointed out things we would have missed and directed us to the best spot to swim with turtles. We took their suggestions on dining and were never disappointed. The grocery is extremely convenient for pack out beach lunches and Mango Fish provided the cooler. A woman who may be traveling solo would be extremely comfortable at Mango Fish as well as on the island. Snorkel gear, beach chairs and even a beach sheet were provided to us.
Although airplanes do take off close to the lodging and it is very loud, very early in the morning I actually slept through those early morning departures after the first surprise.Response from Lori Novis & Fred Hanselman - 03/30/2012

Thank you for choosing to stay with us and for taking the time to review our guest house. We are conveniently located equidistant between Flamenco Beach and town ... 1.5 miles in each direction and our small airport is only a few blocks away. As we are a small island, very few lodgings escape the small island hopper noises. The exception is if one stays in the Zoni area. There are a couple of early morning planes (around 6:00 a.m.) and planes do not fly out or land all day long. Additionally, most planes cease flying in or out well before night. As with all things Culebra, there are exceptions to this. Most of our guests find it very convenient that the airport is close and that we are within walking distance to Flamenco Beach and town. One tip we do offer is, if outdoor noises are bothersome, to turn on the A/C fan for some white noise. We live here year round and find this a viable solution. Thanks again for choosing to vacation with us! Lori and Fred

We are a young couple who wentto culebra for a fewdays. Our experience both in culebra as well as the mango fish house was morethan we expected. Our hosts were truly hosts in all sense of the word. We stayed in the guesthouse, not the casita. It is a cute homey place .From the moment you reserve, you feel welcome as a guest in the hosts home rather than a customer in a hotel. This is so much more than a place to stay foryour vacation! Fred and Lori are so much more helpful knowleadgable and accomodating than any hotel. Plus the location is excellent, short walk to the pueblo or to flamenco beach...at the same time you are away from all the business of the city, youare close enough to walk into town. I can go into so much detail about culebra but this is a review of the mango fish! So for the sake of the length of this review,The only thing i recommend u must do is go to playa tamarindo...

We wanted an affordable simple comfortable clean place to stay for 5 nights. This was it for Christmas - New Years 2011.
Culebra is a great spot for water activities & beaches. We had been to Culebra several times before so we were looking for a spot to stay. We were there or 5 days of scuba diving. Culebra is the sort of place that you go to to just chill out. Culebra is not a fancy place! Culebra is just simple, beautiful & quiet. That is why we go back again & again.
Lori & Fred were very welcoming & helpful. They were extremely solicitous always checking to make certain that we had every think that we needed.
If I was going back to Culebra I would stay again at Mango Fish Guesthouse. If given a choice however; I would prefer a property that was more open & exposed to the trade winds & the tropical breezes -

Culebra is a wonderful little island with fantastic beaches and crowds are not a problem. However, since it is so off the beaten path it can be difficult to figure out how to best to enjoy the island... and that is where Fred and Lori come in. They provide invaluable local intelligence and a comfortable stay in a clean, inexpensive, charming and conveniently located property. We visited on our honeymoon and they did a great job of giving us advice, but not invading our privacy.
The guesthouse is located close to Tamarindo and Flamenco Beaches, close to town and right near the airport so it is easy to get anywhere. You will very much have a real Puerto Rico experience there, so if you searching for a mega hotel with a casino you will be out of luck, but if you are looking for a place to slow down, get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some of the best beaches in the Carribean then this is the place to go. -

We had the pleasure of spending 2 nights (sadly, only 2 nights) at the Mango Fish guesthouse and loved it! Lori and Fred are such warm and welcoming people and very, very helpful with everything - from coordinating our arrival, to helping us find a car rental (the VW thing from Jerry is the only way to go) and sharing their favorite spots on the island - including where to swim with turtles! I can't say enough about how wonderful and helpful they are:)
The guesthouse itself is very comfortable, clean and charmingly decorated, with a/C and a well-stocked mini kitchen. They have thought of everything that a weary traveller might want or need. We also appreciated the snorkel and beach gear that was available for use. Even the beach towels are fantastic.
The location is great, but its best to have a rental car for getting around Culebra as there is so much to explore. The guesthouse is in an ideal location close to the airport, and not far from spectacular Flamenco Beach.
We would definitely return - but next time for longer! -

The Mango Fish is the perfect location in Culebra. Close to the beach and close to the restaurants, but what really makes it so special are the hosts Fred and Lori. From restaurant suggestions to snorkeling advice both go beyond hospitality to make your stay memorable. It is the first place we think of when we talk about 'the next vacation.'
The casita is intimate and charming, modern and simplified. It really is the perfect place to getaway! -

we had a great stay with fred and lori. super hospitable and friendly folks they were, and their casita suited our needs well. if you are looking for a laid back place to turn your kid(or yourself) on to coral reefs and uncrowded beaches without price gouging, you can do it here.we've been around the world and the snorkling here is very good and right off the beach,so no water taxi costs.
the food and drink is fine in culebra and fred and lori will steer you in the right direction.the market a block away is super convenient and you can get a public transport for $3 two blocks away that will take you most anywhere on the island.or you can rent a car three blocks away.
if you are looking for a nice little place in a village and not a resort in tourist central, i would definitely recommend mango fish! -

We stayed at Mango Fish for a week and were totally amazed at how easily we relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. The casita was perfect for two people and was in a good location to walk into town or hop a publico to the beach. Fred and Lori are excellent hosts and made themselves available for recommendations for restaurants, day trips, exploring etc. We can't wait to go back!

Fred and Lori and their accommodations made our trip to Puerto Rico and Culebra.
From our near last-minute booking, to saying goodbye when we headed to the airport, staying with them was like staying with friends.
The guesthouse is wonderful and gives you your own place at the back of their property.
As a couple it provided us both a comfortable roomy bedroom and living room with the amenities needed to make breakfast or afternoon snacks after the beach. Families could easily use the living room with its futon for children. The home is situated in a residential neighborhood, close to Flamenco beach, town and the airport. A grocery is conveniently located on the corner of the block.
From helping you select and airline to get to the island, a rental agency to rent a vehicle from, to the best eateries on the island both Fred and Lori are knowledgeable and helpful. Lori was a huge help ahead of our visit in planning and Fred's tour of the island were great.
Anytime we were asked where we were staying, locals immediately knew them and commented on what wonderful hosts they are and what nice accommodations they offer.
This isn't the place, or the island that matter, for people who are expecting cruise ship level tourism. If you want authentic food, an eclectic mix of travelers, gorgeous beaches and snorkeling, and friendly locals, then Culebra and the Mangofish should be the first place you look to spend some time in paradise.
Yes your cell phone will work and yes there's air conditioning if you want to use it, but this is the perfect place to open the windows, wake up to the cock-a-doodle-doo of a rooster and go to sleep to the sound of wind blowing the palms without the hum of technology noise pollution and plan your day on island time. You will see stars you have never seen before without having to camp on the beach.
We just can't say enough about Fred, Lori and the mangofish.
We will be going back to Culebra and won't be booking anywhere else. -

We stayed here in January 2011. Lori and Fred are great hosts, very warm and helpful. Culebra itself is well worth the trip, with beautiful beaches and surprisingly good restaraunts. We felt safe at all times and had no problems with anyone on the island. The guesthouse is a cool little place, very cozy, with sitting room, bedroom, enough kitchen to make coffee and a full bath. The porch was a great place to hang out. We will go back. Thank you Lori and Fred for a great vacation!

Mango fish was a great little find. Perfectly situated halfway in between playa flamenco and town. Easy walk to both so you don't need a car unless you want to check out Zoni beach (which I recommend). I rented a car 3/6 days I was there which worked out perfect ( car rental places are all within walking distance). Also right next door to a grocery store. House was clean and had everything you could need to make yourself comfortable.
Fred and Lori were the best part of the whole stay. From great recommendations for eating to checking up with me when they hadn't seen me for awhile ( I was traveling alone). They really truly want you to have the best time on the island.
I would suggest for any light sleepers to bring ear plugs as the rooster noise is pretty loud, but I'm sure that noise exists everywhere on the island as the roosters were everywhere.

If nature at night takes on the sound of a symphony, Fred and I recommend that guests turn the fan on on the air conditioner unit to create some white noise to muffle outside noise. If you are really light sleeper, ear plugs are recommended. It was a pleasure having you as our guest, Jennifer, and we are glad we could share a last minute cocktail on our veranda before you flew to the big island!

Fred and Lori were very helpful with island information and providing everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable (use of snorkel gear, beach towels and umbrella). The guest house is well-equipped with great towels, kitchenette supplies, shampoo, bedding, etc. It was cozy and exceptionally clean. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

Lori and Fred are delightful. We stayed at the guesthouse for a few nights. They helped out so much with recommendations for restaurants and things to do. Culebra is small, and this house is within easy walking distance of the airport. But a rental car is recommended so you can drive around on your own schedule. The guesthouse is small and divided into two sides. It is comfortable. I would stay here again. My only complaint would be the exceedingly loud a/c unit in the kitchen side of the guesthouse. I would not recommend this location for people headed to Culebra to party and be loud. It is in a neighborhood. I would recommend it for anyone else.

Thank you for taking the time to compose a review for our guesthouse. We apologize that the air conditioning unit in the casita's living room emitted such an unsettling sound. We would have tended to the issue had we been aware; we hope that your children were able to sleep. We are in the process of correcting the problem and thank you for bringing it to our attention for the sake of future guests.
Fred and I thank you for your kind words about our approach to our guests .... vacations are essential and we are here to help guests see and experience the best of Culebra. -

Left on 07/24/2010 for a stay in January 2010
This was our first trip to Puerto Rico and our first to Calebra. Lori and Fred, owners of Mango Fish Guesthouse, were our guides who helped us answer the myriad of questions we emailed them. They are incredible hosts--knowledgeable and patient. Fred even drove us around the island serving as our tour guide before we ventured forth on our own.
The Mango Fish Guesthouse is on a small lot, but the guesthouse is quite spacious. Although coffee was not furnished, it can be supplied when requested. The home's location works well for air travel or renting a jeep from Carlos. Also, driving to Flamenco Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches, is easy from the guesthouse.
If guests are light sleepers, problems may arise, because of the roosters crowing, dogs barking, goats bleating, etc., but that is a genuine Puerto Rican experience.
We recommend this guesthouse, because the property is within easy walking distance of restaurants and other Dewey sights, plus the owners, Lori and Fred, will ensure memorable visits. They are also continuing to upgrade this property, so we wish them the very best and hope to return some day.Response from Lori Novis & Fred Hanselman - 08/07/2010

We are pleased that you had a wonderful experience in Puerto Rico and Culebra and do hope that you return one day soon!
Our guesthouse is situated in a well established neighborhood where you can observe the day-to-day lifestyle of the Culebrenses. We provide authentic, vibrant sounds for FREE! If you are a particularly light sleeper, we suggest ear plugs. Additionally, turning the air conditioner's fan on will block some of the outside noise. We hope that the fresh island air and your daily explorations will assist with a good night's sleep.
One little correction -- there are no goats in this neighborhood (although we do love to witness kids playing and sometimes one can see them by the US Fish and Wildlife office). But, yes, we have colorful hens and roosters and some of our neighbors do have dogs.
Thanks to our guests suggestion, we now offer coffee and tea in the casita. -

My stay in Culebra was nothing short of wonderful!. This island has the ability to slow you down and relax!. There was a vendor woman that had a sign up of her hours. The sign said:"Open Somedays Closed Others!". Wow!!! That's what I'm here for. Slow down and relax!. Fred and Lori have a beautiful Casita that is furnished very well!. They are air conditioned, But it wasn't needed for me. They have a fridge, coffee pot, Hot plate if you wish to warm up things, And a nice bathroom. It was very clean and in great repair!. There hospitality was beyond anything I could expect. Fred and Lori have a great island aditude. They helped me to find things that I would not have ever discovered on my own. There willingness to help me to have a true island experience that I will never forget!. The food on the island is great!. You can eat everything but Mcdonald's. The nice part is Nothing is fast!. If you want to relax, talk to Fred and Lori and they will show you how and where to experiencereal relaxation. The beach is the best in the world!.Try the Gasolina! on Flamenco Beach and you will relax! I recomend the Mango Fish Guesthouse to anyone who wants to relax and feel taken care of!. For the cost you can't beat it! I plan to go back and stay longer!.
