Casa Sumarco is a very comfortable house in a great location. Close to everything but quiet and private. We so loved sitting out on the deck, enjoying the view and the great breezes that it was hard to leave even to go to one of the fabulous beaches. Susan has thought of everything from a well equipped kitchen to coolers and beach chairs. I would definitely stay here again.

We fell in love with the house and the view right away.
After the long trip from Germany with various stop overs we finally felt at home, enjoied every minute on the terrace, in the garden and in the house.
The island is charming and the beaches wonderful and not crowded at all, the water cristal clear.
We´d loved to spend more time there instead of travelling around so much!
Everyone has been very helpful and kind and we´ve made friends easily.
We also enjoied cooking our dinners while watching the sun set from the kitchen and front porch, eating outside, playing Monopoli or watching one of the various movies available in the living room.
The matress in the master´s bedroom must come from the Rolls Royce factory! We slept like babies.
Having a garden ourselves, we loved spending time among the lovely plants and in the nearby nursery.
One can only appreciate and acknowledge the loving care put in creating such a wonderful place on the hills of paradise!
Thank you so much!Response from Susan Lusk - 02/23/2013

The house is wonderful! Nothing fancy but cozy and comfy. Very well maintained. Housekeeper very helpful when needed and just a few minutes away. The deck makes the house FaB...what a view! The breeze keeps the house cool and fresh, and keeps the bugs away. Culebra is a magical place...beautiful, low-key, friendly. We didn't want to leave.

If you are considering renting Casa SuMarco do not wait, book it immediately. My family of 5 stayed there for 3 days October 16th thru the 19th 2012, and we all fell in love with the house, its location and the Island of Culebra is beautiful. The house is charming, clean, well appointed and has the most amazing view of the bay from the wrap around porch. The bedroom air conditioning was a plus. We also really enjoyed the DVD. Every night before bed, after all day at the beach and then dinner, wine, and beer on the porch my husband and me watched a great movie, while my mom, my father and our 3 yr old daughter were asleep. We all felt very happy at all times. My daughter every morning is asking me when are we going back to Casa Sumarco so we can go to the beach. What a great experience! Thanks for everything Susan, I hope we can go back next year.

If you are considering renting Casa Su Marco do not wait, book it immediately. My family of 4 stayed there for a week in late June, early July of 2012 and we all fell in love with the house, its location and the Island of Culebra. The house is charming, clean, well appointed and has the most amazing view of the bay from the wrap around porch. The beds were comfy, the bedding and towels nice quality and the option of bedroom air conditioning was a plus. We also really enjoyed the DVD selection. Every night before bed, after all day at the beach and then dinner and wine on the porch all 4 of us watched a great movie. The kids still rave about it and want to continue the tradition at home. Now that I have been home for a week I find my mind drifting back to the evening my husband and I spent on the back porch of Casa Su Marco sipping a nice red from one of the local stores watching the full moon rise over the bay. What a great experience! Thanks for everything Susan.

This place was sooo sweet! The inner furnishings and appointing were awesome! It felt like home right away. It was really nice to have the wraparound deck too! I was there with my wife and two girls (9 & 11 yrs old). It was nice to have this temporary home and it always felt good to come home at the end of a day of beach activities to grill or just enjoy the view of the bay. The owner has a great collection of movies and we got to show the kids some classics such as Pet Detectives, Caddy Shack, and Bruce almighty. It was truly sad to leave and I would have loved another week.

After reading other reviews of Casa SuMarco before our trip, our expectations were very high. The house not only met our expectations, but exceeded them. The views from the deck were amazing and we enjoyed eating breakfast and drinking afternoon cocktails while watching the sailboats come in and out of the bay. The kitchen was fully stocked with every gadget we could possibly need. And the breeze at night kept us perfectly cool after hot days on the beach. We would definitely recommend the house to anyone interested in exploring Culebra!

The whole family fell in love at first sight with Casa Su Marco. This is the first vacation we took with our 3 year old boy, and we were very apprehensive at the prospect of going to a place we have never been and staying in a house we found on the internet. Our apprehensions evaporated instantly in the hot caribean sun. The house was a dream come true, with every ammenity we could hope for, and some we hadnt even dreamed of.
Culebra was likewise a magical place, like none we had ever experienced. It is in my opinion the best kept secret in the usa. The flight from the main land is not for the timid, but at just over 26 minutes it was well worth the time saved not taking the ferry. Shopping for groceries was a bitof a challenge, but in about half an hour we had enough food to last the week. They had everything we needed except pehaps an abundance fresh veggies. We dined out a couple of nights and highly recommend Mamacita's for it's eclectic and delicious cuisine.
What else can i say? Lovely house with a nice wrap around deck with beautiful bay views. A 7 minute car ride to the beach. Great people, clean lovely house, fun, sun, im done!Response from Susan Lusk - 04/20/2012

To anyone considering a stay at Casa SuMarco - do it, you won't be disappointed! When we arrived the house was very clean, already opened up to the fresh island breezes, and the deck furniture cushions were in place - the house was all ready for us to just walk in and relax and we instantly felt at home. The view from the partially covered wrap-around deck is one of the best on the island, IMO, and the convenience to town, beaches and snorkel spots can't be beat. In addition to the fabulous view, we enjoyed watching the hummingbirds, bananaquits and iguanas in the beautifully landscaped gardens around the house. The deck furniture was a real plus - several naps were taken in the lounge chairs and hammock, and not much can beat morning coffee or an evening beverage at the table on the deck. The house is fabulously equipped - the island lost electricity one night and we were glad to have the flashlights, candles, gas stove and grill. The outdoor shower, sink and hose were great for rinsing ourselves, and our wetsuits and snorkel gear. After our stay at a different Culebra rental last year I cannot say enough how much we appreciated the well-stocked kitchen, the abundance of towels, the coolers and other equipment in the lockers and even the notebook with all of the helpful hints about Culebra. Thank you Susan - you have set up Casa SuMarco to be a wonderful home away from home for your guests and it was very much appreciated. Also, thanks for being so easy to work with, for your personal attention to your guests, for all of your helpful information about the island, and for making our stay so effortless. We love Culebra, we love Casa SuMarco, and we will be back to both!

My fiance and I had planned for a relaxed, laid-back vacation, we were not disappointed! This house is perfect for those couples who want to escape from the "typical" vaction lodging. The location is about as central to everything as possible, beaches, town, restaurants, etc. And if you just want to lounge around, the wrap around deck has sun chairs and a 2 person hammock under the covered portion. We spent a few afternoons sleeping in it! The big issue we had was there were a few days where the charter planes woke us up at 7-9 am, they flew right over the house. But we looked at it as our alarm clock to get out there, see the island, and not spend our vacation in bed! Susan can expect to see a reservation from us again!

As soon as we walked in the door, we loved it! Rod had not been in on the planning of the trip at all, so he was a little hesitant as we made our way to the house. But the first thing he said was, "This is perfect! This is better than I ever would have hoped for!" And this was before we went out onto the deck, where we spent most of the remainder of our time - the hours before the mosquitoes came out. We could never get enough of the ocean views, the mountains, all the lush greenery, the beautiful sunrises!
Be sure to bring insect repellant and lots of sunblock! Even though the water is the perfect temperature for snorkeling in just a swimming suit, be sure to cover your body with some type of clothing...or you may end up with second degree burns after your first day of snorkeling, like I did. But if you have to be sunburned and relatively housebound, I can't think of a better place to be than Casa SuMarco!Response from Susan Lusk - 09/16/2011

Good advice to be well-protected from the sun— in summer months (May thru Sept) it's especially strong. Mosquitoes thrive around rainy periods, also mostly during summer and fall. Living in Paradise isn't always quite perfect :) I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay at Casa SuMarco— thanks for your kind words and helpful advice— and hope you'll return to Culebra.

After arriving at this house and settling in, I found myself repeatedly humming a little tune. I listened in. It was the classic Crosby, Stills and Nash song, Our House. The lyrics go - "our house is a very very very fine house"...etc. This is exactly the feeling evoked by the snug, organized, very cheery and immaculate environment of this sweet, comfortable and very well-equipped house. The beds are firm and inviting, there is ample storage space, the kitchen has everything you need including a stovetop expresso machine ( to my added personal delight) and the wide deck with the hammock and eating/relaxing niches is a symphony of breeze and bay view. The island has some of the world's most beautiful beaches, white sand and rolling waves, they are mostly empty and if you get there early enough on the right day, you just might catch a hatching of sea turtle eggs. This must be the best-kept secret of the Caribbean. The homeowner is exceedingly helpful and even the restaurants are typical, unspoiled and very good.

We had a fabulous time. Everything was comfortable and easy and great. All of Susan's suggestions about plane travel & logistics were appreciated and helpful. We stayed at Tres Palmas the night before flying to Culebra, and that worked out really well. We loved reading about the history of Culebra in Susan's notebook and we loved album of photos. I especially appreciated having airconditioning in the bedroom. We explored all the beaches and the snorkeling was amazing. We even took stand -up paddle boarding lessons!
Cannot think of anything to make the trip better! (We only wish that the locals could figure out a way to get rid of some of the trash & broken down cars & stuff.) The rental home was welcoming and comfy and clean and wonderful. It was just the perfect, relaxing vacation.

Thanks for the great feedback. Sounds like you got the best of the island, even paddleboard lessons! (Gotta try that myself sometime :) As you've seen, Nature is our biggest attraction— no posh resorts or manicured golf courses. Locals take great pride in this eden, and strive to maintain its precious environment. But alas, nothing's perfect, not even Paradise.

We travelled to Culebra not knowing what to expect, but we hoped to discover a treasure in the Caribbean. We were not disappointed.
Casa Su Marco was the ideal place to call home for our 2 week stay. The location is central without the hustle and bustle of town, the view is spectacular and the deck is the perfect place to kick back and relax. Every morning we watched humming birds and lizards begin their day as we began ours with a cup of wonderful Puerto Rican coffee. The fully equiped kitchen allowed us to cook to our hearts content and the DVD and book collection provided all the entertainment we needed beyond our island adventures.
I highly recommend Casa Su Marco to anyone wishing to experience the natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere that Culebra has to offer. Susan is an absolute pleasure to deal with and was incredibly helpful in the trip planning process. There is no doubt that we will be returning for a second visit. We were certainly sad to leave such an amazing place.

Left on 02/19/2011 for a stay in February 2011
Just back from 2 weeks on Culebra which we visited for the first time. This house was really clean, well-equipped and easy to settle in to. The deck and it's fabulous view of the harbor and out to sea sets the stage for the laid-back experience of Culebra. The owner has things well organized to get you into the house and handle any problems that might arise. Everything is marked with directions and lots of information is provided. Contacts are available for house cleaning, internet and maintenance.
The view from the deck is even better than the pictures, and we always had a nice breeze...loved it.
We cooked a few meals and found the kitchen fully equipped...nice little gas stove.
We did rent a vehicle (from Jerry's Jeeps) but also walked from the house quite a bit. It is a very easy walk to a nearby grocery (Colmado Genesis) and not a bad walk to the Friday vegetable stand across from Carlo's rentals. We also walked into town (35 minutes or so at an easy pace). Beaches are too far to walk except for the hardy few.
The Wifi at Casa Sumarco was fine for most things, but download your movies before you go (half a meg).
The house is on a corner in a fairly quiet neighborhood and very nicely landscaped; seemed very private, even out on the deck. There is some ambient noise from local dogs and neighbors going about their business.
This place really suited the two of us well. The second bedroom doesn't have the view or deck access of the master, so two couples might find the place a little small. Perfect for a couple and a few kids.Response from Susan Lusk - 03/16/2011

This house is a dream! It's #1 feature is the porch -- wraparound, overlooking the nearby hills, the bay, and out into the atlantic. I spent time every morning and every evening on it, admiring the changing light and soaking up the sun. This is the view from the master bedroom, through sliding glass doors, too, and beginning the day with beautiful sunsets is about as good as it gets. The rest of the house was all great -- attractively and comfortably furnished and well equipped, surrounded by a pretty yard with many flowers. We appreciated the fresh flowers at our arrival. Casa SuMarco is a 10 min drive from the central area where we ate and shopped, and is in a quiet neighborhood, about 3 mins from the airport. Culebra's beaches were lovely and people warm and friendly. The island breeze was soft and cool. In every interaction, Susan Lusk was gracious and pleasant. This was a real find, and we feel fortunate to have found it!

This is a cute little house with a stellar location. The neighborhood is generally quiet (first night some people on a big boat had a huge, loud party) but otherwise it's a great spot to have some peace.
The deck is awesome. It's basically why we chose this house. The tree in the picture is no longer there (hurricane) but the view is lovely.
Just make sure the people in the real estate office know you are arriving at whatever time, as they otherwise are hard to reach...
It is perfect for a couple or a small family. Comfortable, clean.Response from Susan Lusk - 12/30/2010

I'm so glad you enjoyed your trip to Culebra despite the problems caused by Hurricane Earl, which brushed the island just before your visit. Yes, it took down the tree in the picture and created an even more magnificent view, but Earl caused serious problems for the entire island. The ferry dock was damaged and ferry service was almost nonexistent for weeks. Air transportation was also affected so tourism plummeted. Businesses servicing tourists (like our managing agent that handles check-ins) had severe staffing and other issues that they were handling as best they could. The upside was that tourists who persevered (like you!!) and managed to get there, enjoyed empty beaches and a tranquility rare even for Culebra. As people are fond of saying on our little isla: "Sometimes living in Paradise isn't easy!"
I hope you'll visit us again.

I really wanted to spoil my mother on our trip to Culebra and searched high and low through all the rental possibilities in Culebra and found this beautiful rental. Mission accomplished!! Susan was an absolute pleasure pleasure pleasure! to deal with. The house was the perfect size for my party - just three of us - i think the maximum you can fit is 4 people. The master bedroom where my mom and I slept had access to the wraparound porch and a view of the harbor. Our lizard friend would visit my mother when she was using the outdoor shower. I really couldn't have asked for more, except more time on the island and more time to veg at the house on the hammock. Just to note, there aren't many extra's provided in the house so be prepared to bring soap, shampoo/conditioner/paper towels and anything you are anticipating to cook/prepare at the house - including salt and pepper/sugar/ketchup. You might luck out and have the previous tenant leave this behind but I would just prepare. There is internet access in one of the rooms which came in handy a couple of times and for those of you looking for tv - there is a small tv but it's not connected to cable and you need to bring movies. We entertained ourselves in the evenings with music (there was a music player) and reading. All the beaches are a close drive - I visited 4 in one day - I reallly recommend renting a car to get to the beaches and to/from the town - way worth it although you do not need a 4 wheel drive. I think that's all - Thank you Susan!

Also, I really appreciate your feedback because that's the only way to keep high standards. Of course guests should find paper products, hand soap, basic kitchen needs when they arrive and I apologize that you didn't. I've asked our housekeeper to double check each time she preps the house. We used to have dvd and cd collections in the house but they mysteriously "disappeared" some months ago. I'm going to replenish them when I return next month so when you visit again you'll be able to enjoy home entertainment!

The is a very comfortable cottage style house. we stayed with 2 small children and it was perfect for us. Susuan the owner is by far the best and most attentive owner I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. She makes sure her guests are ok from before to after the trip. The view is spectacular and the location very convienient. We are looking forward to a return trip hopefully soon. Again Thank you Susan for everything.

Boston, MAThoroughly enjoyed this home!
Left on 05/23/2010 for a stay in April 2010
Comfortable, not large but adequate for a couple and one other person. Located in a quiet residential neighborhood. View from the deck is fabulous and there's almost always a breeze. We sat and watched hummingbirds and frigate birds--very relaxing. The broadband internet access wasn't working some of the time due to wind/rain, but everything else was as advertised.

Sorry about the internet service during your stay (which we sometimes lovingly call internot, due to the forces of nature on the island). We feel lucky to be so remote and yet still get connected to the real world most of the time. I'm happy you enjoyed your stay and come back to visit Culebra again!

"We had a wonderful time on Culebra and found your home to be a special oasis of peace and rest. We were so relaxed (and so cut off from electronics) that we lost track of the days and ended up thinking friday was thursday! We went to the airport on friday and had to scramble to make arrangements to get home, since all of our tickets were for the day before. Our mistaken last day ended up being so special-- we spent hours snorkeling at Carlos Rosario and went way out to the point. With the sun shining down into the banks of coral, it was an otherworldly experience which filled us with awe and gratitude that such places still exist. "

It's so rare for time to suspend itself-- how wonderful for you to receive that gift. There are not many places left that can still provide such magic-- and Culebra is one of them.

Carlsbad, CAWonderful Vacation!
Left on 04/20/2010 for a stay in March 2010
We stayed for one week and had the best time. We found the house charming and the large view deck amazing. The view and the breezes are romantic and dramatic. My boyfriend loves to cook and he found the kitchen well-equipped and accommodating. There's ample room for two couples to sleep, dine, read and listen to music without feeling cramped. The island itself exudes charm and the house is close to everything. We can't wait to go back! Thank you Susan!!

You're right-- it's a romantic setting. Our guests are often honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries. Culebra has a certain magic . . .

New York CityViva Casa Sumarco!

This is my second year of spending a most glorious month at Susan Lusk's amazingly comfortable, fully-equipped and inviting petite villa - and I plan to return for a month for many years to come! She's probably understated the pleasures of sharing her home with you on the website - everything pictured is accurate, everything you need is intuitively there and "living" at Casa Sumarco for a month puts a permanent smile on your face and you feel like a true Culebrense!

Stoneham, MAJust Another Day in Paradise
Left on 02/09/2010 for a stay in April 2009
Casa SuMarco has everything you need for a comfortable vacation on a secluded island. It is centrally located to downtown, the airport and Ensenada Honda (the harbor), as well as, the gorgeous beaches. This clean adorable home features a small user friendly kitchen, plenty of hot water, a beautiful fenced in yard with tropical flowers and birds, an outdoor shower on a large wrap around deck, and a washing machine with a clothesline. Our favorite features of this house are the outstanding views of the harbor and ocean. The breezes are fantastic too! We love to finish each day in paradise on the deck with a Margarita, watching the sailboats and sunset. We look forward to our third year staying in the Casa SuMarco.

Missouri, USAGreat Stay - Highy Recommend It!
Left on 01/23/2010 for a stay in January 2010
My wife and I stayed in Casa SuMarco for 10 days. We arrived in the Ferry at a different time and date than planned, but someone was there waiting to give us the keys and directions to the house.
It's a 5 minute drive from "downtown", easy to find and drive to. Upon arrival, the house was very clean and during our stay everything worked fine, no problems of any kind. Grocery store Genesis is a convenient two blocks away. All else is just minutes away.
Bedrooms had a wall AC unit, big plus for us since we had left below-zero temps and not used to 86 degrees. Master br. had a full size bed with a comfortable mattress, large window facing the street and a large sliding door to the rear deck with a view to Ensenada Honda bay. Each morning right from our bed we saw a sunrise show that really brightened our wake-ups and cheered us up for the rest of the day.
The deck had plenty of seating with a small outdoor table where we enjoyeed our lunches and the great view to the bay.
Kitchen was fully equipped and we comfortably cooked our meals about 75% of the time. It had a gas stove/oven, double stainless steel sink, a good-sized refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave plus every imaginable kitchen gadget, pots, and pans that anyone could ever need to cook a full meal! The kitchen had a tiled countertop where 5 people can easily seat around it to eat and play cards or games. A window by the sink had a view of the bay and the sail boats while we washed dishes!
Living room was small but comfortable with a futon couch, two chairs, a cocktail table, a small TV and DVD player. One night we rented a video and enjoyed our "movie night". The rest of the evenings we relaxed reading from a fairly large selection of books, talking with each other or playing card games.
We had an excellent experience and it would take another hundred pages to extoll the beauty and fun of Culebra - not enough room here!
Susan was very accomodating & pleasant to deal with.Response from Susan Lusk - 01/24/2010

San Juan, Puerto RicoCasa D'Marco-Sweet 2 BR House with Fantastic View, Cool Breeze,
Left on 01/11/2010 for a stay in June 2009
