A favourite Caribbean destination for ‘A’ list celebrities including Courtney Cox, Maria Carey and Eddie Murphy, the small French/Dutch island of St Maarten/Saint-Martin, covering just 37 sq miles, is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

It occupies a central position midway between Puerto Rico and Guadeloupe at the heart of the Caribbean Sea, and is the closest part of France to US shores.
One of the most developed parts of the Caribbean, it boasts a whole host of activities and a huge duty free shopping area. Beautiful beaches, fantastic restaurants and a rich cultural heritage are just a few of the delights of this tiny island paradise.

Superb for all age ranges from partygoers to young families, there’s plenty of entertainment on offer for everyone, or the option to just laze on the amazing beaches.

*What to see and do*

An incredible playground, this small island offers a whole host of activities from enjoying one of the many, breathtaking beaches, to zip lining through a forest reserve.

With its amazingly crystal clear waters, diving and snorkelling are top of the past times list, along with sailing, deep sea fishing, windsurfing, paragliding, jet skiing and more.

If you fancy exploring on land to experience the natural beauty of the island there are 25 miles of footpaths running through the mountains and along the shore.
Golfers can indulge their passion on the 18-hole course near Mullet Bay, while horse riding and kayaking are more activities to try.

Not to be missed is a trip to Marigot Market and it’s also worth making the effort to experience the ‘old’ atmosphere of the island with a visit to Orleans, The French Quarter, where some of the 17th century structures still remain. There is a museum dedicated to preserving St Martin’s history and culture next to Marina Port La Royale.

Add to this a wander through Grand Case, with its distinctive style of architecture and the location for some of the island’s best restaurants, and you’ll begin to see why the world is your oyster in this wonderful place.

*Flights*

St Maarten/St Martin is just a three-and-a-half-hour flight from New York, a two-and-a-half-hour flight from Miami (Florida), an hour and a half away from Caracas (Venezuela), and 45 minutes from the islands of Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico. The island lies at around 7,000km and eight flight hours from Europe.

*About the owner*

Based in London, I have been visiting St Maarten for over 15 years, and for an island that's barely 37sq miles, I have always been amazed by the incredible choice of activities and the contrast of the French and Dutch sides.

I vividly remember the day of my first visit to the island when I walked through immigration and then literally straight out of the airport. The fact there was no long queues at Customs made me feel wonderfully liberated.

With well over 25 years working with Caribbean tourism organisations and selling vacations to this beautiful part of the world, this tiny island was like a breath of fresh air. It had nicely balanced traditional old school Caribbean with a dash of European modernism not to mention it being a stones throw away from Anguilla and St Barths

Like any excited tourist, I had read about all these restaurants on the island and I wanted to count them all to confirm that there were really over 300 eateries. I seem to remember stopping after 130 and gave them the benefit of the doubt.

I fell in love straight away and decided out of all the umpteen islands I had visited, this is where I wanted to lay my hat and make it my home in the sun. Conscious of suffering a little mild sun stroke, I thought I might get a second opinion, hence I invited a couple of well-travelled friends across in the months following and they unanimously gave it the thumbs up

Having learn that Orient Express who owns La Samanna on the French side was building a marina development, I investigated, had an early eveningmeeting with the sales representative and even though I couldn't quite see the plans she laid out, I was totally sold on the concept. The development has truly lived up to its expectations and I continue to savour every minute that I spend in the apartment. I love the sunrise at about 6am where the reflection on the marina just glistens and reaffirms the peacefulness at that time of the day. Outdoor dining on the covered terraced is de rigueur, it somehow makes the food and wine taste more delightful
