Named after the Indian tribe that harvested oysters nearby, Abenaki sits over the Damariscotta river. A canopied deck provides a shady spot from which to enjoy the area boat traffic and river views. Swim from your own private beach during low tide. Launch your kayak from the new dock and float. Don't have one? We would be happy to refer you to a rental company near the cottage. A walk across the bridge brings you into Damariscotta with its wonderful shops, theater and restaurants. This pet friendly Maine vacation rental provides easy access to Route 1 to explore up and down the coast. The Damariscotta River flows into the ocean about ten mile...s downstream. Water views from each room. This cottage has been furnished with comfort in mind. Just a short drive to the Boothbay Region, home to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Railway Village; or visit the Pemaquid Lighthouse and Fort and learn about our early history while enjoying fantastic ocean views; go whale watching, fishing or sailing nearby.

WHY BOOK WITH COTTAGE CONNECTION?
Vacation Rentals. Privately Owned. Professionally Managed. Trusted since 1993.
Cottage Connection was one of the first vacation rental companies in the Mid-coast region of Maine. Jeff and Audrey Miller, who own three vacation rental homes themselves had an aha moment when they realized they could not find anyone who ‘got it’ to manage their rentals for them. Since 1993 they have been trusted by homeowners and vacationers to “connect” each family with the perfect cottage for their vacation. As Audrey puts it; “The home they stay in becomes a personality, a part of their lore, when a family connects with the right cottage. Whether they want a rustic cabin in the woods or a high-end ocean bungalow, the right setting sets the tone for the entire vacation.” Learn more about how Cottage Connection can help make your vacation perfect!

The location & the deck w/awning were great & they allowed dogs so these attributes helped balance out the other irritations.
Both the first & second floors have a significant tilt, in various directions.
It is so tilted that the book case upstairs has an eye hook attaching it to the wall, and the large book-type case in the kitchen is also secured to the floor with hardware normally used to prop a door open.
The primitive shower stall has a stick-like piece of wood propping it up straight (or perhaps keeping it from falling on its side). Also at night you slide a wood cross bar across the top of the steps to ensure you don't fall down the steps heading to the bathroom (the floor slants towards the steps).
The living room furniture near the tv is very uncomfortable, so we dragged in a plastic adirondack chair w/cushions to watch a dvd.
The roof leaks a lot in a heavy rain, we put housewares out to try to protect their furniture.
If this were a $800/week rental, you'd think the house matched the price, but at twice that, you feel duped.
My guess this is a house in progress and will be improved as time goes on. But, for the time being the description should be more honest so that you can decide if the great location offsets the primitive, rustic character of the house.
We've traveled for about 3 months each year for the past 10 years, staying mostly at vacation rentals, so our comments are in the context of a lot of experience. Read more
Response from Cottage Connection of Maine, Inc. - 08/19/2013
Abenaki Cottage, as seen in photos on the web, portrays it as a basic cottage on the side of the river with the advantage of walking into town or sitting on the deck enjoying the water activities. This cottage also has a dock and float for boaters and a kayak rental company just across the bridge. Overall, it is very convenient to activities. Photos clearly show furnishings (which are individual to property owners). We show on our website as many photos of a cottage as we feel are necessary to represent the house to potential guests. As typical with 1930’s waterfront cottages along the coast many were built on stilts or pilings. Often times over the winter there is a shifting of the cottage which results in some “tilting” of floors. The gate at the top of the stairs is a child safety gate used by the owners’ for their grandchildren. The shower stall is new and fiberglass. The seating in the TV area is comfortable though not a sofa.
As we do not live in the houses we represent to learn about problems, we count on and appreciate the guests letting us know about leaks and any other problems as soon as they become apparent so they can be addressed. We advised the owners of the roof leak and they are addressing it. We learned of the leak when the guests were departing.
Older cottages are not for everyone and we appreciate that. We have many newer style cottages that we would be delighted to recommend for a future stay.
