Description from the owner
Kenyaways Bed and Breakfast is a small guesthouse hotel with only 10 rooms on the stunning Diani beach South coast of Kenya. It is surprisingly inexpensive and is absolute paradise. Self catering option is also available. However there is a tasty restaurant on the beach front where you can sit having a view of the glorious Diani beach.
Kenyaways guesthouse decor is unique, designed by my wacky, artistic mother, Joey, and has gorgeous, bright colors everywhere, with lots of comfy seating space for chilling out and has been transformed into a cosy small hotel ideal for beach holiday. It is owned by my pioneering father who started the fir...Read more

What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
Kenyaways is located on the South end of Diani Beach on a very secluded and unique beach called Galu. Diani beach is not really a town but a resort village about 30 km south of Mombasa. It lies along a stretch of a 15km white powdery beach. The village is very friendly and safe and is lovely to walk around, with monkeys, trees, fruits stalls and bicyclists. There are all the modern conveniences of a city such as banks, atms, supermarkets, bars, restaurants, etc.
It has a tropical, laid-back atmosphere, welcoming all sorts of drifters, entrepreneurs, sun-worshippers and artists.
To get here, you need to fly to Mombasa either via Nairobi or direct and you can get a taxi very easily to Diani from the airport which takes about an hour and costs approx. 35 euro. You can also fly to diani beach airport from Nairobi and is a short distance by taxi to Kenyaways.

LondonMy idea of an ideal beach guesthouse
Left on 10/02/2012 for a stay in April 2012
If you're a reformed backpacker who likes a bit more comfort these days but still appreciates a friendly, slightly hippy, family-run place then Kenyaways is ideal. I've stayed there twice and loved it both times.
The location is great - right on the beach and next to a fantastic restaurant. The staff could not be more friendly and helpful. But my favourite part is the personal touches in the decor and care that make you feel like you're in somebody's home rather than a guesthouse. -

Kenyaways is a peacefull place where simplicity and beauty meets. You can spent the whole day just by the beach under the palm trees listening the ocean breeze and the waves. It is very quite beach and the both hotel reastaurant and the neighbour restaurant are very good in sea food. Staff is welcoming and rooms are very comfartable. I strongly recommend.

Kenyaways is quite simply amazing. Unlike many other 'resort' hotels on the Diani beach Kenyaways is small and charming. The hotel is quiet and secluded and staff are really friendly and helpful. If your looking to relax and chill out or spend the day kite surfing on your own private beach look no further.

I loved the flexibility of the staff and services that are provided at Kenyaways. The explicit attention to detail was very much appreciated from the mosquito repelent in the room to the kikoy towels for on the beach. The staff are very well informed about local attractions and facilities. This enables customers to persue their interests (snorkling, golf, partying...). It was a very relaxing experience and I would not hesitate to recommened it or to stay there again!

Peaceful, beautifully decorated, quite pedestrian white sandy beach - it's cliche but I will definitely be back! Definitely.
Thanks so much

Oslo, NorwayIncredible ending to an adventure
Left on 12/12/2011 for a stay in June 2011
Review of the private apartment at Kenyaways.
Eight Norwegian dental students hit africa for the first time the summer of 2011, working hard by teaching 1400 children, teachers and health workers about common dental illnesses and prevention of these in the central Kenyan highlands. Overloaded with smiles, plaque dye and saliva, great encounters and smiles all the way, we embarked on the trek up Mount Kenya via Sirimon/Chogoria... another fairytale... to end it all, we wanted something to top out magnificent trip all off, Kenyaways seemed to be just the ticket.
Four days at Kenyaways was our holiday that summer, it was a truly magical experience, which will never be forgotten, and hopefully be relived the coming summer.
The dwelling is magical, and pretty much impossible to beat, as a chill-out spot, it is unsurpassed and the atmosphere is seductive, everyone wanted to come back, and others are planning trips after our raving reviews. No need to go on, you get the picture; if you want a slightly funky, slightly off-beat, slightly cool, slightly delicious and erotic destination, hit Kenyaways.
We wish to particularly thank the cook (and waitress), who had to surpass old Wilson, our cook on Mount Kenya, and his incredible dishes... You have to pay for all foods and beverages you consume (you buy most of it at Nakumatt), but the quality of it all is in a league of its own, we wish she'd come to our cold winters and open up a restaurant, it would be a spot of pilgrimage. In Kenyaways, it is breakfast, lunch and dinner...
I won't go on, I believe you have caught my drift. -

The reception was poor and unwelcoming, treated simply as $$ not as gusts in an establishment.
The restaurant staff unable to communicate exactly what was included in price of room and that which was separate.
Little contact with managers/owners/reception, not very friendly for a small business that should be dedicated to customer service.
The room was not as portrayed in photos and thus we were deceived. The bed was uncomfortable and toilet without light, making a midnight tinkle a little difficult.
The price was far to elevated relative to surrounding establishments and the meager experience offered by Kenaways.
All in all a poor experience.
The place needs some work and personality.Response from Lindsay Kennaway - 12/10/2011

Hi Marta,
Thank you for your honest review. Thank goodness we do not ever get bad reviews as this otherwise I dont think we could exist anymore! However it is good to be reminded that the laidback style and peaceful slow coastal living of Kenyaways is not for everyone. We apologise for your sub-par holiday on our beach.
Best of luck in the future. Linzi. -

I knew we were onto something special when we drove along the jungle lined drive to Kenyaways. Monkeys darted across the road and the sound of the crickets warning of another hot day was majic. We were met by a smiling man who took us to our room , "Karibu", a warm welcome. Our room upstairs was beautiful and opened out onto a comfortable lounge room with views of the close beach and sea. Time for lunch and what I had hoped for, lots of fish on the menue, try the fish cakes.during our four day stay we swam, had a massage and shared meals with the other guests. Long walks along the beach were amazing. I would be there tomorrow if I could

I stayed at Tribal room just for a night.
The view from the first floor balcony was nice. But as for the room, there were so uch to be improved. The shower space was awful. No curtain for the window which opened to the parking space. No step for shower area and others so it made the floor flood. The key for the room didnt look secure enough. Using internet was cherged Ksh 1,000 though the speed and connection was terribly slow and unreliable.Response from Lindsay Kennaway - 08/18/2011

Hi Ayaka,
Thank you for your honest review. However apologies that the room was not up to your standard. I just ask you to remember that we offer a 3 star accommodation. Please rest assured that noone can see up from the carpark into the shower. The shower area is a modern design which many high end resorts also have in their bathrooms. And I am afraid there is nothing we can do about the internet connection.
Kind regards,

It is a kite-surfers paradise but if youu want to swim, windsurf, snorkel, catch butterflies or just laze in the sun you will be happy. If you avoid places called 'resort' you will like Kennaways. Most of the guests are residents of Kenya or live in other african countries and are discenring, and we enjoyed making friends with several of them.

This b&b; is located on a quiet section of beach, but it's a short cab ride to eateries, shops& Atms. The staff appear to be a happy crew & are attentive. The kitchen delivers adequate fare & a well stocked bar is to hand. It's a busy establishment & the front yard can be arrayed with colourful kites, as the locale is suited to kiteboarding at certain times of the year. The rear sided rooms can become a furnace in the hot season, even with a fan in operation. It's well worth paying the premium rate for the spacious & private rooms on the 1st floor. Make sure that your repeat bookings are confirmed in print to avoid disappointment(s). The spirit of inshalla can prevail that's in keeping with a coastal people.

Nice accomodations. Friendly and helpful staff. Good service and good food at the restaurant. Beautiful location on Diani Beach. Just far enough away from the big crowds, but within easy ride to shops and restaurants. Great beach for kiting. At low tide, you have a large stretch of open beach. Awesome snorkeling just off the beach. We found large colorful reefs with urchins, pufferfish, scorpionfish, starfish, and an abundance of other sea life.

One of the best weeks I have ever had on holiday.
There is a distinct lack of 5-star boutique hotels on Diani - the 5-star that we are used to in the Gulf - which makes a refreshing change. You seem to get on Diani exactly what it says on the label.
Kenyaways is a super friendly, beautifully run guest house. The rooms are basic but traveller chic and that is all you need on a holiday when you are never out of shorts and rarely wear shoes.
I was looked after like a king.
Kite-surfing will depend on the wind but I learnt more in three hours than I did in 10 days on Santa Margarita. The beach is perfect for teaching and Linzi was a fantastic tutor.
The food and the staff are also brilliant and there is a very nice buzz so there is always someone to chat to or hang out with.
As a destination it is great too with the delights of Sails for lunch and Forty Thieves for partying.

What an amazing place!! I stayed in Kenyaways Beach house with some friends on a Kitesurfing trip in Feb 2011. We stayed in two rooms on the second floor which were amazing, great views, lovely seating areas and came complete with a great Chef who would cook whatever you wanted whenever you wanted it!!
The hotel is right on the beach, and i mean 50 feet away!
The kitesurfing set up was nigh on perfect, the wind kicks in around 11.30 and builds throughout the day so no early starts!!, a launch/land service, and a safe place to store/wash your kit. A huge beach and warm blue water complete the perfect set up. The hotel has a nice little bar/restaraunt on site which is a great place to socialise after a day on the water, and all the staff are super friendly and helpfull. It was agreed that a weeks stay was far too short and we are all looking forward to a return trip in the near future. Highly recommended. -

The setting and service were great at Kenyaways B&B.; However, we got a different room set up than discussed before check-in (2 sets of bunk beds in a small room instead of a double bed and single bed as the triple person room). In addition, the bathroom facilities, though not a problem in sharing, were poorly maintained with a leaking toilet, a cracked and poorly maintained shower, and no hot water as advertised - disappointing for the price. The personnel were very helpful and friendly. Pretty good food.

Absolutely fantastic place. If you can't relax in this place, then you need some heavy sedatives. Perfect for kitesurfers. Almost all residents were kitesurfers, and hence created a very sociable atmosphere, though you wouldn't need to be a kitesurfer to join in the chat. Made lots of new friends. Accomodation is simple, but very clean and perfectly acceptable, and the views and surroundings make up for any lack of gold plated shower heads. Food was excellent, though service was often slow - the remedy was to state a time you wanted to eat. Either that, or just relax into Kenyan time. For kiters - we had ten out of 14 days of about 16 knots plus wind. was almost entirely on a 12m. brilliant for beginners as shallow water at low tide and you can't be dragged off anywhere other than down the beach a bit. there is a reef about a km off shore and plenty of fun waves there for the more advanced. kite school is based at kenyaways, and they were really good and friendly.

Had a fab stay here. Kenyaways has a great location - just get your kites ready in the shade and the beach is just there. Loads of comfy chill out area/beds makes it easy to relax in between sessions. The staff are great - so friendly and the place is perfect for meeting other kiters. We also scuba dived with the school next door and went on safari, so plenty to do there. Would defo recommend.

I had a great time at the Kenyaways Beach Bed & Breakfast and Restaurant. It was just perfect! Nice rooms next to the beach, friendly staff, a homely atmosphere, godd food and a beautiful beach. I was there to kite surf and can absolutely recommend the place. It's a great spot with good wind conditions.
I can't wait to go back... -

We went to Kenyaways for the first two weeks in January as we wanted a place to Kitesurf, Dive and Relax. The guest house is right on the beach and we loved the friendliness and welcome we got from all the staff which you wouldn't get in a larger hotel. It was very relaxing and we will definately keep it in mind for a return visit.

Lindsay and her team are trying their best to make you feel comfortable and at home.
rooms are clean and the staff is very friendly and fun. in their little restaurant they offer very good food. the beach is nice but the water very shallow. it is really good for kitesurfing which is the main activity there.
If you want to go to other places in Diani beach you need to take a mini bus or call a taxi (about 10 min rides and not expensive)...
All in all we had a wonderful stay at the Kenyaways! -

We had a great few days staying here. It was low season, but the sun was shining and the beaches were empty. Kenyaways offered us great food, drinks, beautiful views from our bedroom and altogether made our stay in Diani. I would definitely come back!

The Kennaways runs a really sweet B&B;, perfectly located by the beach in Diani. If you are into kite surfing, it doesn't get much more convenient than this. After a session in the water, you can easily store your kite on the grass in the shade, and have some lunch (good value) in the cozy outdoor area. The breakfast and dinner they offer is very good as well. And the staff working there was really nice and service-minded.
The rooms and toilets are very clean and neat, and the bigger rooms seem sweet (we stayed in the bunk-bed room).
When my friends left Kenyaways, all rooms were occupied, but they still managed to fit me into one of their private rooms!
I was on a pretty tight budget when I was in Kenya, so I thought it was a bit pricey. But if you're only there for a couple of weeks, that surely makes a difference.
The friendly service, the excellent location and the laid-back atmosphere really makes this place stand out!

I travelled with my two adult daughters and my son - in - law who were trating me for my birthday which falls on 11 September.
We are regular visitors to the coast ...always did an annual trip when the girls were younger and under my care!! but this was execptional .
The venue is good...just loved the long stretches of white sandy beach and the lovely waves. The rustic funishings are refreshing away from the "normal"plastic hotel / resort type and I just loved the brilliant coloured cusions.
The service was surpisingly friendly and prompt ..considering we expected to do our own cooking and cleaning.
All in all it was the best we've had and look out my USa based daughter has prpmised to bring all her friends back sometimes next year.
I definately are saving up to return with a group from my chama. -

We had an excellent stay at Kenyaways Kite Village and would love to return one day. Everyone was helpful and did everything they could to make sure our needs were met and our stay was comfortable, nothing ever seemed like to much trouble. The food was good and on a number of nights we had food specially made for us that was not on the regular menu. As kitesurfing beginners we found this to be a great location. Both my husband and myself highly recommend a stay at Kenyaways.

Left on 10/15/2010 for a stay in September 2010
Around 20 of us descended onto Kenyaways for a long weekend in September. They put on a fabulous (and very reasonably priced) barbeque, stocked up the fridges for a party, and away we went.
When the wind was up, the awesome team of instructors and assistants from H2O helped us set up our kites and took a few people out on lessons.
Whether kiting or just chilling out, this is the spot to visit in Kenya. Very relaxed atmosphere, beautiful decor in the main house, very comfortable and clean rooms, and of course you couldn't have better, more fun hosts than the Kennaways. -

Heidelberg/GermanyBeautiful appartment directly at Diani Beach
Left on 09/19/2010 for a stay in August 2010
We are a family with 3 children aged between 10-15years and we stayed in Kenyaways for 6 nights in august 2010. We had the upstairs apartment with 3 bedrooms with 2 attached bathrooms plus one extra toilette, a nice terrace, dining room, kitchen and veranda all for ourselves. The place is beautifully furnished with old Swahili style furniture. To get to the great beach (at low tide 50m wide and fine white coral sand) you simply cross the nice garden (40m) with Palm trees. Upstairs you always get a nice breeze from the ocean, in the morning there are sometimes monkeys in the trees/terrace. The bedrooms are simply furnished with beds, nightstands, commode and mosquito nets.
The apartment is rented with a cook who will prepare delicious meals 3-times a day or on request with the food that you provide. We also had a very nice waiter (David) who serves the meals and helps the cook. He will also do the shopping if you send him. We preferred to do the shopping by ourselves, because we liked taking the matatu (just some meters up on the main road) to Diani shopping center and see what the country has to offer regarding fruit, vegetables and other things ( there is also a German bakery). Everybody at Kenyaways was extremely friendly and helpful, downstairs there are several other rooms for rent, a bar and a small restaurant. You can do bodysurfing or kitesurfing(Kenyaways offers lessons and rents out the material), beach walks (although as everywhere there are some beach boys hanging around, but not allowed on premises). The next big resorts are about 2 km away (Baobab, with more beachboy etc. hassle), as the stretch of beach around Kenyaways is mostly occupied by privately owned vacation homes, some of them (like Kenyaways) are converted into Bed and Breakfast type hotels. We can highly recommend Kenyaways to everybody who looks for a beautiful quiet place to stay at this wonderful beach without needing many animations, a pool or other resort amenities.

Left on 09/16/2010 for a stay in August 2010
Decided on Kenya for a beach holiday, and didn't want the feel of a big tourist resort offering that most searches pointed us towards. We were after a relaxed low key affair...we found Kennaways via a search including Kitesurfing...which is our hobby. Was surprised prior to getting there with the quick rsponses from Linzi to any questions/ concerns we had...always a gamble paying for a holiday over the net from the otherside of the world...!
However when we got there, we got more than we were expecting. Relaxed, chilled, stylish, funky just describes the feeling upon arrival. 10 days on, grew to love the place, the people, the environment.
Security and personal safety are always considerations when visiting countries such as Kenya. Kennaway gave (and demonstrated) the sense of security, without the feeling of being watched over. The only security concern was whether the monkeys were going to steal my breakfast while I was having my morning dip in the ocean...however they even had someone watching out for that !!!
Highly recommended, if your after a Low Key, Stylish, Funky, Secluded Beach House feeling holiday( The photos on the website don't do it justice!!!), whilst still being close enough to the action, with memories that will last forever. Kennaways is the spot!!

This really is a great little spot hidden away from the more hectic northern Diani beach. The atmosphere was great, so chilled out, food was excellent, and the bar sufficient. The kite surfing amenities looked good, and there were snorkels and fins lying around if you wanted to head out to the reef. The room was large, comfortable and clean, with no complaints at all. Perhaps could do better to advise on things to do for those not kitesurfing, but we were more than happy just to spend lazy days reading, looking over the beach with cocktail in hand. I would very much recommend Kenyaways!

Kenyaways had just what we wanted, a small local coast resort as we knew them to be, not one of those international same-all-over-the-world three star plus hotels with their swimming pools and standard cuisine. A gem indeed, but don't tell too many people, or it might get spoiled!

The appartment avoids the usual boring blandness and artificiality of international hotels and provides unique charm. The location is close enough to the ocean to give the impression of camping on the beach without any of the discomfort. All this is capped with genuine hospitality!

Left on 07/31/2010 for a stay in March 2010
Kenyaways Beach Bed & Breakfast is an amazing place and they make you feel at home. Diani beach is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. While flying from the us is a trip in its self it is definately worth it. Once you get to Kenya the value is amazing and the Kenyaways do not take advantage of their seclusion as their food is excellent and very well priced. If your looking to go kiteboarding or learn to kiteboard this is the place to do it. The wind is excellent and the beaches are huge. The kiteboarding staff here is amazing and a ton of fun. I recommmend staying for 2 week if you can and also ask Linzi to connect you with a Safari guide. We did a 3 night Safari and with was spectacular. For me the 3 night 4 day Safari was perfect amount of time and highly recommend it. Also this is a very safe location and you will meet a ton of Europeans which are very friendly and a great time. When staying at Kenyaways you feel like your hanging out with a bunch of friends at a beach house, but if you want your alone time you can have that as well.

Kenyaways B&B; is ideally located right on the beach away from hotels and big crowds, which is perfect for relaxing strolls on the beach, kite surfing, and other water activities. Safari tours can be easily arranged as well. This place is well suited for a family vacation as well as adventure seekers. The service is excellent, food is reasonably priced and very good, and for a small fee you can have your kites ready to go before you even roll out of bed. Diani Beach is a pristine destination and I cannot wait to go back. My only complain was lack of air conditioning.

Kenyaways was recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed. We loved the location especially the unspoilt nature of the coastline where Kenyaways was situated. I stayed at Kennaways for a few days at the end of my trip to Kenya. It was really relaxing and benefitted from being away from the larger resorts of Diani, but still fairly close to shops and banks.
Lindsay was really helpful, as were all the staff. I had a couple of massages that were also fantastic and really good value. I also had a windsurfing lesson and relaxed on the beach area. Because of the location there was rarely hassle from beach boys, and they soon left when you didn't want to buy anything. The room was spacious and benefitted from the light sea breeze. We had great sunsets and sunrises. I didn't want to leave. -

House staff are very professional, yet friendly and a laugh. Location is excellent, so is the home cooking. There's plenty to do and see during the day, and at night time. Kenyaways stands out from the others because it is not a big brash resort but offers home comforts, yet privacy as well.
