Additional Location Information
This is a beautiful one bedroom 15th century apartment renovated in the summer of 2010 and situated on the first floor of one of medieval Dinan's oldest buildings. Overlooking Place des Cordeliers in the heart of the town, Dinan is the best-preserved medieval citadel in Brittany. There are numerous restaurants and historical buildings within a minute's walk of the apartment (Basilica St Sauveur 200 metres and Eglise de St Malo 100 metres - and visible from the windows overlooking the square.)
This really is a romantic spot and the apartment is accessed via the original 8ft wide curving oak staircase. Theapartment sits on the original massive oak pillars at ground level on the square - and over a classy handbag shop. The Place/Square appears in many a publicity shot for the town featuring its patisseries, bistros and outdoor restaurant tables on the cobbled streets. 50 metres down the road is the famous steep, cobbled 'Rue de Jerzual' with its many oak-framed 15th century houses, which leads directly to Dinan ' pleasure port' on the river Rance from where boat hire/trips can be undertaken with a plethora of riverside eating establishments and bars to hand.
The apartment is not suitable for wheelchair access but the 300 year old oak staircase to the apartment (on the first floor) is extremely wide and shallow and not at all difficult to climb for anyone other than the infirm.
There is no exterior space but the apartment overlooks the restaurants and the beautiful Place des Cordeliers (see pictures) and is the heart of the biennial 'Fetes des Remparts weekend procession. There are half a dozen very good places to eat within a minute's walk of the apartment (classic - Monsieur Robert, highly recommended) French, Italian (Pizzeria Cecco), Creperies, Couscous).
Beautiful and numerous beaches abound on the coast directly north of Dinan at Dinard, St Lunaire, St Cast, St Jacut, Lancieux, St Briac to name just a few. The nearest is but 20 mins away by car.
There are regular, and ridiculously cheap, bus services from Dinan (150 metres from the apartment) to Dinard and St Malo via lovely villages on the river Rance, such as Taden, St Samson sur Rance, Plouer sur Rance and La Richardais, as well as to the region's capital Rennes..
There are half a dozen or so fantastic golf courses within half an hour of Dinan, including Dinard Pen Guen, Les Ormes (challenging parkland course with plenty of water and doglegs) and St Malo Golf situated inland at Le Tronchet.
Historic interest. Dinan has a medieval history dating back to 12th century and it is renowned for being the best-preserved medieval citadel in Brittany, with ramparts dominating the skyline.
Car hire is not at all essential-there is a bus service from Pleurtuit (near Dinard airport which is 20 mins from the apartment and has routes from Stansted and East Midlands) to Dinan which would require a short taxi drive from the airport. Rennes airport (which is served by Flybe routes from Southampton, Dublin, Leeds, Manchester,Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Stornoway, Newcastle, Inverness, Jersey, Guernsey) is only 40 mins from Dinan.
St Malo port 25 mins. Caen & Roscoff ports 110 mins. Le Havre port 150 mins
Calais 5 hrs.
The apartment is in the heart of medieval Dinan and everything the town has to offer is within easy walking distance. The 'pleasure port' of Dinan can be reached in no time by walking down the historic cobbled Rue de Jerzual - the original centre of the trading port in the 13th century.
Two exceptional restaurants are but a few yards away. There is a tabac right outside the apartment which sells English and other foreign language newspapers.
