Arlington, MassachusettsThis is hacienda paradise.
Left on 06/13/2011 for a stay in February 2011
The hacienda, built in the 1500s, is in the state of Guanajuato, which is landlocked in the middle of Mexico... an hour from the city of San antonio. It is in the middle of the desert. Rolling hills, rocky... this kind of landscape. Suffice it to say, horseback riding across this terrain was pretty cool. Eric so enjoyed his runs up and down the hills and across the mesas. This area is 7000 feet above sea level. It is cool in the morning, then hot and dry all day. Animals animals everywhere. Dogs, cats, cows, sheep, pigs, roosters, burros, horses...
Hacienda Las Trancas is the place to vacation if you want to be surrounded by beauty and kindness. We enjoyed a week there with our children in February. We felt safe and all is peaceful there. There is a full-time bilingual concierge on staff, making it easy to maneuver, with them arranging transportation. What sets Hacienda Las Trancas apart from other places nearby is how well they take care of the guests, especially when you don't speak Spanish.
We arrived on Sunday evening. A driver picked us up and took us on the hour trip back to the hacienda. (Drivers are available to take you where you want to go. I could get used to that.) When we arrived at the hacienda, Gerardo was there to greet us, a gentle giant of a man, who is mostly bilingual and offered us Margaritas. We toured around a little bit, looking at some rooms, marveling at the grand scale of everything. They have done such a beautiful job decorating this place. I had many questions for Stephen and Kelley, who were happy to tell the stories of putting the hacienda together.
Let me mention the spa. They employ 6 massage therapists. They charge twenty dollars for an hour massage. Needless to say I had four massages. There is also a beautiful and well equipped gym, for treadmill running and circuit training.
We took some nice morning hikes across the hills, crossing a dried up river that fills in the summer, and went up to visit a pasture where a cow had just been born. She was balancing on wobbly legs nursing. Oddly there were egrets and herons, and small birds so red you could call it neon. The desert is so brown and tan. So dusty and rocky gray. A red bird is quite a spectacle. If you are a runner, you will really enjoy the sights across the rolling hills and high mesas.
It is so quiet there. And slow and kind. Mexican culture is warm.
And the food. We have never been nourished so well. Have you ever had a perfectly ripe mango? Guava? Papaya? The soups... the fish, the sauces, the greens, oh the greens. ... and the juice! Each day a new flavor. Mornings it was orange juice, something we are all familiar with but this orange juice, made from the oranges that grow on the courtyard tree... it was like candy, as my daughter put it.
Horseback riding was t a wonderful part of the day for us, led by Juan antonio, caretaker of the horses. He has taken care of the 10 horses for Stephen and Kelley for many years. He is a tall young man, with gold in his front teeth, a beautiful smile.. Soft spoken. Now and again we would stop and Juan antonio would tell us about the history behind the sights. He is 27 years old and has been riding for 21 years. He rides as though he is part of the horse.
We went four separate times to the local hot springs. Some of them had caves and little waterfalls. They were beautiful and relaxing for our kids and ourselves.
On our last evening, we threw a party for ourselves. Dinner was set up outside in the grand arena, just outside the stables. We hired a couple musicians to play guitar. The music made the evening even more special. It set the perfect tone. We danced, sang, and enjoyed wine. There is a wine cellar at the hacienda... and also a vineyard.
What a wonderful week we had in this hacienda paradise. I highly recommend it.
