Description from the owner

"Shelter From the Storm"

is a group of three villas (including the owner's house) and an efficiency apartment, perched on a five acre mountainside point, approximately 60 meters above the Pacific Ocean; high enough to give dramatic views (think Big Sur in California) of the coastline to the Osa Peninsula but low enough to hear the waves breaking on the rocks below. Perfect for family reunions or group vacations, Shelter from the storm consists of two luxurious villas and a charming efficiency apartment tucked into the jungle and oriented to maximize privacy while allowing for the "outside living" so popular in this part of the world.

      A Stay in Paradise

Left on 05/19/2013 for a stay in April 2013

For full disclosure purposes, Daryl and Donna are longtime friends of an old friend of ours. That is how we found Shelter From the Storm. Having said that, I firmly believe that all guests at the villas received the same attention, hospitality, and assistance that we were given.

First, the accommodations are gorgeous. Sitting on a spit of land in the jungle above the sea, you are at home with the toucans and the capuchin monkeys. The villas each have a unique design to fit into the landscape. We stayed in the Monkey House.

Climbing up the spiral staircase brings you to the balcony with its chairs and hammock. The sliding glass doors open into the living space - a comfortable bed on the left wall, and seating on the right. Straight ahead is the kitchen area with all you need for preparing and eating meals. To the left of the kitchen is the bathroom with a great shower.

To be honest the only sitting we did inside was at the kitchen bar as we ate breakfast once or twice. Otherwise, when we were not out exploring the attractions, we were on the balcony or at El Rancho. More on that soon. We had expected insects to be a problem. I didn't touch the repellent in the week we were here. We kept windows and door wide open, which, along with the ceiling fans, kept us comfortable and cool. And the hammock was very comfortable in the heat of the day.

El Rancho is a common room with honor bar and tables. It opens onto the pool and deck. This is where Daryl makes his famous margaritas, and you can chat with the other guests and the hosts. You occasionally get interrupted by the monkeys swinging by through the trees. You have to get up and watch them, but such is life.

The location of Shelter From the Storm is terrific. Miles of beautiful beaches are minutes away. We were introduced to great restaurants. If you want to zipline through the canopy or ride horseback to a waterfall, it is all close by. Daryl and Donna will direct you.

Finally, our hosts were fantastic. Donna and Daryl were friendly, hospitable, and helpful. They were happy to make reservations for dinners and for outings. Street signs are not reliable, but Daryl's directions were spot on. Most of all, they were good people. They care for the earth and land around them. They care about their guests. And we loved them as well.

      Perfect!

Left on 04/10/2013 for a stay in February 2013

My boyfriend, his son and I spent 11 days at Sfts. We were there during a busy time and we couldn't find somewhere that could accomadate us for the entire time in one rental. Donna arranged it so that we could stay on their property the entire time. We had the priviledge of testing out all of their villas (Which was quite fun). All of the villas had their own verandas with beautiful views and an element of feeling secluded, even with neighbors being near by. All of them also had air-conditioning and didn't leave you wanting for anything, with beautiful decor and american friendly bathrooms (no need to put your tp in the trash can, like 98% of CR) Abajo was the smallest, but perfect for a couple that is probably going to eat out most of the time (per small kitchen). Arriba was my favorite, because the kitchen was was the best stocked and arranged for doing a lot of cooking, not to mention there was a gass stove! The layout and the veranda were also the most comfortable for me, especially with three people. To me this one was also the most beautiful, with the wood work and the view. The monkey house was really fun. We weren't lucky enough to see any monkeys, however, you really felt like you were in the rain forest. This was probably the most peaceful location with all of the green and is my second favorite. La Cuesta was our last part of the tour and we were not disappointed. This one has the furthest distance between beds if that's important to your group, and it has the most space. The veranda wraps around two sides and has yet another beautiful view. One of the best parts about Shelter from the Storm had nothing to do with the accomodations, it was the two amazing hosts, Daryl and Donna. Not only were they the most excellent concierges, but they felt more like we were visiting the coolest aunt and Uncle you could wish for. In Colorado we have a saying that transfers across generas..."We don't do swag!" Well, there's no swag here, it's all dank!!!

      Wonderful time

Spectacular views and a warm welcome! We had a wonderful time during our 3 day stay at "Shelter from the Storm" during our last few days in Costa Rica. Thank you Donna and Daryl for all your hospitality and great travel tips.
We stayed in the Las Rocas abajo suite which had an amazing view of the ocean. During our stay we had a fantastic time doing horseback riding to nearby Nauyaca Waterfalls (a trip which Donna booked for us ahead of time) and hiking in nearby Hacienda Baru. It was also very relaxing just hanging out by the pool/rancho lounge area or on the patio of our suite at "Shelter from the Storm". Highly recommended!!!

      Million-dollar View, Symphony of Nature

Left on 02/13/2013 for a stay in January 2013

Shelter from the Storm was our mid-January escape from Pennsylvania winter, and it provided us with images, sounds, and experiences we'll remember forever! Upon our arrival, Donna showed us our villa, which was beautifully appointed with local art work, had a generous kitchen, and opened up to a spacious patio where we could lounge and read or dine. Donna had graciously stocked us with eggs, croissants, coffee, and pineapple so we could enjoy breakfast and relax in the morning. The highlight of our stay at the villa was definitely waking up to see the sun rise from our bedroom (I know this is the West Coast, but yes, we could see the sun rise!) and hearing the jungle come alive with birds chirping and howler monkeys swinging through. Every morning we had coffee on the patio and soaked in the priceless view of the Pacific Ocean below us. It was so relaxing and therapeutic! Besides Donna's warm welcome to our villa, Daryl made us margaritas and popcorn "on the house" as a welcome, and we sat and chatted in the Rancho with Daryl, Donna, and the other guests.
Throughout the week D & D recommended beaches, restaurants, and tours and took care of any reservations needed. We had no responsibilities and no worries! All their recommendations proved to be excellent, resulting in a memorable week experiencing diverse aspects of the area, such as the hippie/surfer town of Dominical, the cave-framed beach of Ventana, a horseback ride to beautiful waterfalls, and the cosmopolitan restaurants of Ojochal.
Our villa was extremely clean and maintained several times by the housekeeper Blanca. Throughout our stay we felt that we and our belongings were safe. We came home saying that we'd love to return to live among the natural beauty of Costa Rica once again, and we would definitely want to return to Shelter From the Storm. We highly recommend this lovely escape where we were greeted like family and treated royally.

Villas better than a 5 star hotel - Dominical's finest

Left on 02/11/2013 for a stay in January 2013

We spent a week in January 2013 in Las Rocas arriba at Shelter From the Storm. The villa was better than and of the best hotels we've ever stayed at. We spent holiday week in December at Sofitel in London. That was a definate 5 stars - yet Shelter From the Storm beats any hotel you could ever find!

You have luxury accomodations, from comfortable beds, great linens, all the towels you would need. You also have modern conveniences - if you want to prepare some local food - you have the facilities at your fingertips to do so. Having a refrigerator and kitchenette are amazing perks - that you don't get at even the best hotels..

The Rancho - which had the swimming pool - the bar - wi fi - and satellite TV was a fun place to hang during the evening - or when taking a break during the day.

We saw a wide array of wildlife on the property. From toucans to an amazing number of monkeys. We heard the howlers in the distance, before they paraded by. We had about 20 whiteface go from tree to tree.

The area around Sfts offers fun activities, from white water rafting (great), horseback rides to the falls, and great beaches. We visited a local rain forest - and halfway through our hike over suspension bridges and up the mountain - we reached the crest over the rivers - and wouldn't you know - it starts pouring.

We never had a worry about security - while at Sfts or in the local area. We always felt quite safe, both our property - and ourselves. We did always keep the SUV locked while in any part of Costa Rica. The property gives you a secure feeling.

The hosts Daryl y Donna were great. Daryl would make circus style popcorn nightly - with locally hand pressed coconut oil. Wow what a treat! And they offer a wealth of local information and knowledge.

The honor bar was well stocked. Most hotels try to hit you with extras, especially drinks (sodas or alcoholic) that can really add to the bill. The honor bars prices were so reasonable at Sfts.

      Paradise in Costa Rica!!

Left on 01/06/2013 for a stay in December 2012

Our extended family of 9 adults, ranging from 20-55 years old from across the us, travels together once a year and this year we decided to spend a week at Shelter from the Storm from Dec 27-Jan.2. We couldn't be happier! We rented the entire property to accommodate all of us comfortably and it was a great fit. Having the rancho to gather for drinks, meals, swimming and relaxing was perfect, especially with the well-stocked and very reasonably priced honor bar, which meant less driving and more time to relax and enjoy each other's company. Each air conditioned villa was beautifully appointed with large showers, beautiful tiles and local art. There were also private outdoor spaces with amazing jungle and ocean views.

Our hosts, Donna and Daryl, were amazing. They booked our excursions for us in advance and communicated with us regularly prior to our arrival to make sure we would have the best of times. Daryl regularly joined us in the rancho to have a drink and make popcorn and tell us stories about the area or let us pick his brain about things to do, places to eat, etc. The resident cats and dogs also kept us company and made us feel right at home, since we were away from our own "fur-kids". The housekeeper, Blanca, made sure our rooms were tidy and that we had plenty of beach towels. When I wasn't feeling well Donna sent her down to my villa with much appreciated supplies.

One item of note is this-if you have trouble climbing many stairs or have a lot to lug up and down, such as baby strollers, you may want to make sure to stay in La Cuesta. Sfts is built into the side of a mountain which adds to the beauty but also adds to the climb between villas, carport and rancho. La Cuesta has a short slope to climb to get to the front door and only a few steps. In contrast, Las Rocas abajo, where my husband and I stayed, had the longest climb and, due to arthritis, I had to plan my time to minimize trips up and down. Also, due to arthritis, the bed was a little too firm for my comfort-but hubby with the bad back loved it!

All in all, Shelter from the Storm is a gorgeous and exotic property that we highly recommend. You won't be disappointed!

I will admit I had no idea what to expect when my flight landed in San Jose but boy was i amazed when i Got to Shelter From The Storm. No words can truly describe just how beautiful this place is. Seemingly every little detail has been thought of to make your stay as relaxing, memorable, and enjoyable as it can possible be. I was amazed by how much character the room had. I stayed in Las Rocas arriba and it was flawless. A beautiful and very large porch to eat, drink, and relax on. Fully equipped with a huge shade that you can put up or down however you choose (we kept it up during the day to let the ocean breeze come in and down at night as it may rain.) The wood work throughout was beautiful and you simply cannot beat sleeping to the sound of the waves just down the mountain. Best of all was waking up every morning and looking to the left out the patio doors to the most beautiful sight of the pacific and mountains. Wifi was available everywhere on the property which was nice to check your emails and such. Costa rica is an amazing place and Sfts is in a perfect location with everything and anything you could want or need close by. Don Lulo's horseback trip to the falls is a must and zip lining at osa mountain was great as well. All of which Donna and Daryl will arrange for you, all you have to do is say the word. Costa Rica has many amazing people and Donna and Daryl are no exception. I have been a lot of places in my life and nothing compares to the week I spent at Shelter From The Storm. I cannot wait to go back!!

We arrived at Shelter From The Storm on my birthday and from the beginning I knew it was going to be wonderful. This is hands down the best maintained resort property we've ever stay at! We didn't get there until almost 9pm and it had been dark since 6. Daryl and Donna were there to greet us with pork barbeque and beer. Our friends stayed in La Questa and we had the Monkey House. We loved the beauty of the property and the views. Daryl and Donna arranged for all of our activities; ziplines, scuba and snorkling and horseback riding to a mountain waterfall. Their attention to detail was astounding. We were only there for a total of 6 days, and yet our stay was wonderful. We particularly liked the fact that the Monkey House is up high and the the breezes made airconditioning unnecessary. What a paradise! I can't recommend Shelter From the Storm enough!!!

Our stay at Shelter from the Storm was truly an experience we will not soon forget. We woke up every morning to a sunrise with a view worth much more than a million dollars and to the sound of a jungle awakening. Everyday we relaxed poolside or just enjoyed quiet time after a busy day of activities in our villa. Daryl and Donna where the best hosts you could possibly imagine they looked after booking our excursions, making sure we had everything we needed by making dinner reservations at anyone of the fine local dining establishments when we didn't feel like cooking in. Daryl even gave us some of the best fireworks we have seen on New Years Eve overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We will be back soon...Barb Brett and Bronte

We've traveled a lot to Carribean and Mexico and this place stands out with the most dramatic beauty . Donna and Daryl have built a paradise in the rain forest. The villas are architecturally beautiful with gorgeous native hard wood ceilings amazing views from the outdoor living space. it's also a great location being close to Dominical. Donna and Daryl have great suggestions for activities. They know where to zip line, hike, beach and horseback ride.

Daryl and Donna truly went above and beyond to make our stay an incredible one. Not only did they provide excellent accommodations, but they also enriched every other aspect of our stay with their hospitality and knowledge of the area. It's rare to come across hosts like this, they cared very much that we were enjoying our time in Costa Rica and did whatever they could to help coordinate our daily adventures with the local tour companies. They were very attentive to any need or request that we presented to them, making us feel as though we were family. Upon our arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to find a welcome basket with local fruit, coffee, and other items. The villas were clean, quiet, and comfortable. Having breakfast each morning, watching the sunrise and hearing the jungle come to life, all while sitting at our outdoor dining room table was a perfect way to start each day. If you get the chance to have one of Daryl's world-famous margaritas, be sure not to miss it. Winding down in the evenings while sitting next to their open-air bar was a great way to end an adventurous day.

We've done a lot of traveling around the world and this area of Costa Rica ranks with any great tropical get away you can imagine. It has a very safe, laid back vibe everywhere without that tourist trap feeling. Shelter From The Storm came highly recommended to us and we were blown away upon arrival. We stayed in the Monkey House which was perfect for the two of us. We really enjoyed the view of the rain forest from the private balcony and the ocean view from the kitchen as well as the wildlife that roams the property is constant entertainment. We especially liked the Rancho area where we barbecued a few meals and enjoyed the pool and honor bar. The owners Donna and Daryl where very accommodating hosts who pointed us in the right direction for activities, beaches and restaurants. We will most definitely be back, but unfortunately not soon enough. Believe all the reviews here, the place is amazing!

      Will be back again!!!

Left on 08/01/2011 for a stay in September 2010

My wife and I recently spent our honeymoon here for about 5 days. We stayed in the 'monkey house' and found it to be even better than we had imagined. The property has about 4 other areas to stay as well but we preferred the monkey house as it was up in the trees and had great views of the monkeys coming in the morning and at dusk!

The "rancho" was great too, a central place to congregat and "hang out". They have a bar there with plenty of drinks, a BBQ grill, hamock, a little mini library of books, plenty of seating and open air views of the ocean. The pool is also great, not too big and not too small. Also with amazing views of the ocean and occasionally you can see the monkeys going through the trees while in the swimming pool.

The nearby towns are quite authentic and makes you feel like you're actually in Costa Rica (the real Costa Rica) rather than some american-ized Cancun resort town. It is not tourist-y at all, which my wife and I appreciated a lot. Why go on vacation to another country/culture only to be handfed the same stuff you get at home!! There are plenty of cool little shops in Dominical and Uvita (in each direction of their property).

Plenty of beaches which are not very crowded and lots of other activities to do like horseback riding to a huge waterfall in the jungle, zipline 80ft above the jungle floor, and other interesting sites to see like the butterfly garden.

All in all this place is amazing and will give you a genuine experience in Costa Rica. I think that is what most people would like to have anyway - to get away from stressful normal life and just relax in a beautiful and untouched habitat. Thank you for having us we will definitely be back soon!

      Stunningly Beautiful, Wonderfully Friendly

Left on 08/01/2011 for a stay in July 2011

Shelter From the Storm was the perfect place to end a 14 day family vacation for 5 (3 kids ages 10-16). If we could do anything over again, we would have stayed here longer. The lodgings are beautiful and super-clean. We had stunning views of a tropical forest sloping down to the Pacific from our balcony. Loved watching a pack of monkeys swing by most afternoons. The pool and cabana area were a great place to hang out, with an honor bar, a grill (made great cheeseburgers one night), music, a nice movie selection and of course another stunning view. Dominical is a funky little surfing village that is fun to check out. Ask about the local fish vendor next to a restaurant whose name I forget, we got fresh tuna and red snapper that was out of this world. You must do the horseback ride to the waterfalls at Don Lulo's. Take a day trip to Manual antonio for the amazing park and beautiful beaches, and to appreciate how uncrowded and unspoiled the Dominical/Uvita area is. This really is a tropical paradise. We missed meeting Daryl and Donna, who were on a vacation of their own, but their friends Polly and Tim were wonderful hosts, with lots of great tips. Daryl and Donna were extremely helpful prior to our arrival, quickly answering my many emails with great suggestions and information. You have to have a 4x4 to stay here and I would highly recommend Wild Rider, great cars, great service, great price, completely reputable.

      Most relaxing vacation ever!

Left on 07/27/2011 for a stay in June 2011

My husband and I spent 9 nights at Shelter from the Storm in the Monkey House. We enjoyed every minute of this relaxing paradise. The covered veranda with beautiful fresh cut flowers and Costa Rican rocking chairs beckoned us to sit and read or enjoy the jungle sounds and troop of monkeys swinging by from time to time. We visited the Rancho gathering area each night and Daryl's honor bar. Sometimes we would find other guests there cooking dinner on the stainless steel grill and listening to the hundreds of available Dvds. We enjoyed meeting them and exchanging stories from the day's adventure. This property is quiet, intimate, and a true gem off the beaten path. There are only 2 others villas to rent (they are gorgeous), which results in a max of 14 people...a far cry from the all in one inclusive resorts where guests become numbers. Everything is immaculate from the landscaped grounds to the meticulously appointed accommodations. Daryl and Donna are the consummate hosts who have thought of everything a guest could possibly need, starting with a welcome basket of fresh pineapple, mango, cookies, and a pound of Costa Rican coffee. They helped us for weeks before arriving by supplying helpful tips such as renting a 4 wheel drive vehicle from Solid Car and having them deliver to Pura Vida Hotel in alejuela where we stayed upon arrival in San Jose. Daryl provided candid advice on site seeing and booked our trips: zip line nature tour @ Hacienda Baru, Cano Isle snorkeling, horseback riding to waterfalls, and ultra light flight. We have traveled far and wide, nothing compares to this beautiful place and the legendary Daryl and Donna. We felt like house guests and will never forget this most relaxing vacation we have ever had. Can't wait to go back.

      Monkeys, Morphos and Pure Magic!

Left on 05/17/2011 for a stay in April 2011

We have been coming to the Dominical area on and off, since 1998. The best "find” we have made there is "Shelter from the Storm”. Nestled on a lookout over the Pacific ocean and where the breezes sweep up to cool the mid-day air, you couldn't find a more peaceful, serene place to relax after a glorious day of zip-lining, horseback riding or stomping thru the many jungle experiences that you can find within close proximity.

While there we were treated to a troop of Howler Monkeys right outside our villa, saw sloths in the nearby trees, daily visits from Blue Morpho butterflies, the mournful cries of Toucans along with daily sightings. All in all it was the perfect jungle setting in an absolutely refined, ultra-comfortable, clean and accommodating residence.

Daryl and Donna, the proprietors, were masters at caring for all of our many needs while we were there, from booking appointments for rental cars, to on the beach horseback rides, to reservations to the best restaurants in the area. They know what good service means and render it with love and kindness. You won't find better proprietors anywhere!

The villas are extremely well appointed, with touches of Costa Rican culture throughout, including wonderful Boruca masks and gorgeous murals. The Rancho serves as the "watering-hole”, a shelter-within-the-shelter, to lounge on hammocks, cool off in the pool and indulge in a favorite beverage after a long day at the beach.

In the world of travel it is always a joy to stumble upon a true gem. Shelter from the Storm is such a find. When the batteries need re-charging...we will definitely be back.

Shelter From The Storm is a definite drop your socks, first class stay. You will have a great time, you will love the place. I don't think it matters which villa you stay in, the owners have created such a lovely, unique environment in each one, you'll probably want to try them all just for fun. We stayed in two. And as comfortable and relaxing as each villa is, it is the ambiance of Sfts as a whole that sets it miles apart from the competition. It truly seems as if you have entered a little, mini neighborhood where the inhabitants are all friendly, fun, and laid back. (The way you wish it could be at home) The villas are located in such a way as to afford plenty of privacy if that's what you want. But the center of the 'neighborhood' is the Rancho. If you want to take a nice dip in the pool, watch TV, play games, cook on the grill, or have a drink and swap tourist info, it's just a few steps from your villa. And since there are only for villas, it's never too crowded. Now, the true highlight of this lovely neighborhood is Donna and Daryl, the owners. They are the best travel agents, helping with anything you want to do. And there is a lot to do in this area. They are also the most gracious and entertaining hosts we've ever met while on vacations around the world. Simply put, they are great, good fun. I won't waste time repeating what others have said over and over about Sfts, except to say its all true. Donna & Daryl, we thank you again for an exceptional stay. You have created a small slice of heaven in the middle of a tropical paradise.

      Paradise in the rain forest

Left on 04/07/2011 for a stay in March 2011

It's a long trip from Boston to Shelter From the Storm, but when we awoke the morning after our arrival we knew it was worth every minute. The floor-to-ceiling glass doors in the bedroom revealed a landscape reminiscent of Da Vinci, or perhaps a Japanese woodcut. The Pacific ocean, rimmed by the misty lush vegetation of the rain forest mountains was breathtaking to behold. We thought we could stay in our suite the entire day, sipping wine and enjoying the view. And in fact, on that day at least, we did.

The proprietors, Daryl and Donna, keep the place meticulously clean and seem to appear magically whenever you need them. On one occasion, I was about to pick up the phone to ask if Daryl would bring some fresh spring water, when he knocked on the door carrying a huge jug on his shoulder.

The pool, always clear and fresh, is a wonderful spot to take a dip after a hot day exploring the rain forest, and right next to it is the "rancho," where Daryl keeps beer, wine, and other refreshments subject to a pay-as-you-go honor system.

The wildlife is, of course, unpredictable, but on this trip a troop of white-faced monkeys came crashing through the trees next to our veranda like the circus was coming to town. They seemed to be as curious about us as we were about them.

There are many more marvels of nature to behold right there at the resort. Everywhere you turn there are bananas, mangoes, coconut trees, and pineapples. Truly a paradise in the rain forest, even if you never leave the property.

The views were fabulous, Darryl and Donna are wonderful hosts, provided us with detailed directions for Sfts and to other locations - we had an absolutely fabulous time! The Villa Las Rocas arriba was well stocked and very well decorated, extremely comfortable - perfect for the time we spent in the Dominical/Uvita area. We strongly recommend Shelter from the Storm for your next vacation. Thank you!!!

      Best rental I ever had

We had a great trip to Costa Rica with a large extended family an experience that was made even more enjoyable by our stay at the Shelter from the Storm.

Donna and Daryl have been great hosts and are kind and caring individuals that we remember fondly many months after the trip. The true test of a host are in their reactions to unexpected problems or situations that might arise and when we lost a members credit card they have immediately leaped to action and tracked down for us the bank that could provide the information that we needed. In the end the card was not recovered yet it was very comforting to know that we had someone to rely on in a foreign country.

We had small children 3 and 5 with us who had a great time in the pool and even got to take home an inflatable toy that they got attached to (thank you Daryl). We liked the pristine grounds and well kept surroundings (beautiful gardens and friendly staff!).

It was a great place to go to and we hope to visit again! I hope that in the world where mega corporations build huge all-inclusive hotels and sprawling compounds a place like the Sfts will continue to provide a serene, close and personal experience.

Truly a shelter from the everyday storms

Left on 03/31/2011 for a stay in March 2011

We stayed a week with Donna and Daryl at these lovely Vacation villas and really loved it. First finding the place was easy with the explicit directions and after traveling around Costa Rica (which can be a little challenging) we were welcomed by both our hosts and a great welcoming cocktail. The place is excellent and very secluded, three separate houses one of which houses two units. Convenient for families with kids especially a teenage daughter who had her own place to stay and sleep. We stayed in Villa la Questa and family stayed in Villa los Rocas both units. The construction and decorating is wonderful and the units are very comfortable and private which helps when privacy and rest is required.
We really enjoyed our coffee on the great balconies while listening to the howler monkeys and toucans in the mornings. The common area by the pool with self service bar is fantastic and we felt right at home in the tasteful jungle feel bar area with great bamboo ceiling, satellite T.V. and overhead fans. Lounging by the pool is comfie and private and Wifi is available all around the common area. The only challange was the hills which are a bit steep but fine, but the elderly might have trouble. I found it very cool how we were perched on the hillside and really felt a part of the jungle. Parking is great in the covered area and the available laundry was a welcome addition when traveling in the jungle areas. All in all I found the experience wonderful and restful.
The nearby town of Dominical offers a little nightlife and funky kind of retro surfer feel and some great food and surfside shopping albeit quite limited. But the ice cream joint was welcome and we visited several times.

The place to stay in the Dominical area, a true hidden gem

Shelter From the Storm is simply a gem. Four gorgeous Villas tucked up onto a mountain overlooking the Pacific, this is a perfect place to stay while exploring the South Pacific Coast in CR. Donna and Daryl are fantastic hosts, and made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived, as we joined them for a drink in the beautiful Rancho overlooking the pool.

My wife and I stayed in La Cuesta--what a beautiful place to spend a few nights!! We spent our early mornings sipping coffee and watching monkeys from the gorgeous, private, wrap-around deck. Comfortable furniture, views of the ocean and a hammock make this a special place to unwind. The bedroom was painted like the rain forest and added to the already luxurious feel of the Villa. With a full kitchen, plenty of room and a hand-tiled shower, La Cuesta truly is a peaceful retreat and one that we would not hesitate to book again.

If you have a car, using Shelter From the Storm as a base to explore the many beaches along the coast is perfect. Donna and Daryl made sure we had all we needed to enjoy our stay, including emailing us descriptions of local restaurants and the beaches in the area and making dinner reservations for us at the don't-dare-miss-it Restaurant Exotica. And Daryl's honor bar is a rare treat-- like carrying a top shelf bar and ice cold beer in your luggage! This simple addition to the accommodations speaks to the overall approach of the exceptional hosts, ensuring you feel welcome and at home in your villa and the Rancho and providing great value to their guests.

I highly recommend staying at Shelter From the Storm, we enjoyed it immensely.

Shelter from the Storm was fantastic. We stayed in Villa La Cuesta. I thought the pictures on the website were great but they did not do it justice! It was just like the pictures only sooo much better. Donna and Daryl were great. We weren't sure exactly what we wanted to do in Costa Rica before we arrived so we waited til we were settled in and then had them make reservations for us at Cafe Exotica for dinner - fantastic! at Don Lulo's for horseback riding - so much fun! and for a fishing trip - excellent! They've got a whole book of places to go, things to do, helpful info, beach directions, etc., that they keep updated. Tons of info!!
The other villas were occupied while we were there and it was interesting to note, although not surprising, that all the other guests had been there before and were planning on returning.
You definitely need four wheel drive to get up to Sfts, We used Solid Car Rental in San Jose. Donna recommended them and they were great. We didn't realize that their office is not on the airport property and the taxi guys in the car rental area told us that they had never heard of Solid and tried to steer us to National but we took a cab - basically across the street - to Solid and found out that they shuttle people to their location and that they've got people at the exit with signs. We didn't know to look for them because we believed the guys who told us that they didn't know who/what Solid was. On the way back to the airport at the end of our trip we were very late and they drove us right to the airport in the car we had rented so we didn't even have to unload our luggage. Very nice guys and they charged exactly what they had quoted. No extra or hidden charges. We would rent from them again.

Shelter From the Storm offers a civilized escape into the rain forests of Costa Rica. You can watch monkeys, butterflies, sloths, geckos, bats, toucans, vultures, and couple of friendly cats and dogs while having access to the internet, coffee maker, ice cubes, and a fully stocked bar!

The attention to detail is as impressive as the view. My girlfriend and I were in Costa Rica for a week: we went horseback riding to a waterfall, swam under said waterfall, walked on the beach, rode waves, caught tuna, enjoyed several great meals, explored the jungle, tested our four-wheel-drive rental truck, relaxed by the pool, relaxed on our deck, slept in a hammock, and made some new friends.

Darrly and Donna are excellent hosts. They arranged our fishing trip, horseback riding expedition, recommended restaurants, and also gave us privacy. The sheets were clean, the air conditioning worked, the kitchen was equipped with all the gadgets we required...we wanted for nothing.

I turned 40 while on vacation at Shelter From the Storm. What a great way to make the turn and start the back nine. Really a fantastic trip.

      Amazing!!

This place is amazing! There is a reason why they have gotten 60 five star reviews out of 61 (and I don't know what was up with the 1 bad review, that person was off their rocker!). You wont be sorry you chose Shelter from the Storm,
it's such a great location! 5 minutes max to everywhere awesome. Down the road is the small town of Dominical with amazing restaurants and shops. A little ways beyond that is this amazing wildlife refuge: Hacienda Baru, it had a butterfly area and the most incredible hike through the forest (where we saw monkeys) which empties out onto a beautiful beach. There is a great outdoor market down the road, a little ways past that is a fantastic beach Playa Ventana, and just up the road from Shelter from the Storm is a must see reptile house. Now mind you it is Costa Rica, it is not your american Developed, Disneyland get away, (thank God). The roads are generally unpaved and steep, you must four wheel drive around (which I think is fun and exciting) but the best places are always tough to get to right? : )
Now Shelter from the Storm specifically is truly a home away from home. I wouldn't stay anywhere else. Donna and Daryl have made those villas so comfortable and beautiful, they are respectful of your privacy and even booked activities for us like horse back riding and snorkeling! Troops of Monkeys regularly pass in the trees in near reaching distance from the porch of the Monkey house. We woke up every morning to the sound of Toucans and brilliants flowers that covered the property. All the staff were so nice and helpful, we even got to go on a personal hike with the grounds keeper and saw little red frogs and incredible plants. I could go on and on.

What a great location - along the strip between Dominical and Uvita on the West Coast of Costa Rica - an area known for its great beaches, and laid back attitude. What a great view - truly the million dollar view from each of the villas. What great amenities - fully furnished with great taste, fully functional kitchens (if you want to cook, but there are great restaurants in the area, so use the kitchen to reheat leftovers). A great pool / rancho / honor bar. Great hosts Daryl y Donna - who make you feel at home - and know the area to give sightseeing tips - or just tips on how to be lazy and enjoy. We have been back twice, December 2008 and December 2010. And will be back again.

We stayed at Shelter from the Storm withou benefit of seeing a Trip advisor review. We knew it was for us as soon as we saw their website. But I have to say--photos can't do the place justice. Sfts is between Dominical and Uvita--which we came to consider a huge plus. Uvita and Ojochal are south of Dominical and offer their own unique benefits. I simply cannot say enough about Donna and Daryl at Sfts. They linked us up with a great tour company, a great car agency, a great restaurant and a great bakery. Nothing they suggested didn't turn out to be anything but an a+. Following our stay at Dominical we went up to Manuel antonio because everyone talks about Manuel antonio. Don't bother. Commericial. A tourist trap. We had done a bird walk in Dominical (recommended by Donna and Daryl). The nature walk in Manuel antonio didn't even come close. The beaches in ma are crowded. We spent Christmas Day on the beach in Dominical--sharing it with about 5 others. The food we had in ma just wasn't of the caliber of Dominicals. And the place we stayed was about the same price as Shelter from the Storm with none of the ambiance or amenities. You simply won't be anything but delighted with Sfts and the Dominical area.

      Perfection! Shelter from the Storm

From the moment we arrived, we knew Shelter from the Storm was the perfect place for us to enjoy our two week stay in Costa Rica. In fact, even before we arrived Donna had been a tremendous help in booking our excursions, giving helpful advice, and even making New Year's Eve dinner reservations for us at Exotica. We had booked the Monkey House, which was a great choice for us...the jungle setting, wildlife, and privacy met all our expectations. We found the Monkey House furnished with everything to meet our needs...lots of fluffy towels, fresh clean linens, a well stocked kitchen...since we planned on cooking most of our meals during our stay. WiFi in our unit made it easy to keep in touch with our family back home. I even enjoyed wearing the monkey slippers while enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning on our porch. Donna and Daryl made us feel very welcome and even surprised us with a wonderful gift of local Costa Rican products to enjoy during our stay. They were always available to answer questions or just for some friendly conversation. The Rancho area was always spotless, the hammocks provided a great place to nap and the pool was sparkling clean, plus it was a kick to float in the pool and watch the monkeys pass by in the trees above our heads. Blanca, the housekeeper and alex the gardener worked hard to keep everything "Perfecto"! Great job! We had rented a 4x4 Bego from Solid Car Rental and loved exploring the area on our own, our excursion to Cano Island with Southern Expeditions was really first class, the guides were amazing and so informative. We also did the horseback ride with Don Lulos, it was an thrilling ride and a beautiful waterfall. If you are looking for a perfect retreat in the Dominical area, this is the spot! Donna and Daryl are great host...we left feeling like we had two new friends in Costa Rica. Pura Vida!!!

I was planning a 4 week trip with my 2 children (girls, 7 and 9) in the area of Dominical for October/November of 2008 when I came upon the Sfts website. We lived our dreams. Sfts truly surpassed our expectations.
We stayed for one month during the rainy season, which I have always preferred as I find the temperature less hot. This seems to be partly because the rains (usually brief and intense) have a cooling effect and cloud cover provides some solar screening. The jungle is lush and the waterfalls abound with flow. The rain at night is magical with its sound and intensity.
The added bonus to this time of year is that tourist facilities and attractions are less busy. This makes for easier booking for the various excursions and more personalized attention .
Sfts is located up in the hills and away from the highway. This meant a secure and quiet setting with a pleasant breeze. We stayed at Villa Monkey House which was awe-inspiring. The location of the villa and its private deck looking at the jungle provided us with lots of wildlife observation. We felt like we were in a different world up there with all the jungle sounds including Howler monkeys at sunrise.
The Rancho (common area) and pool were a delight for all of us with hours of entertainment.
We did not have to go very far to explore the wildlife and the outdoors. We found all our entertaining/excursions within 15 km...ziplining , horseback riding, jungle walk, beaches.
Donna and Darryl are wonderful hosts. They welcomed us with a nice basket of goodies and were always available if we needed help or information. They gave us useful driving instructions from San Jose which was especially helpful during the rainy season as the main highway may close for a few hours on some days for maintenance. I have no reservations about travelling by car at that time of year in Costa Rica.
It was such a great vacation that we did it again in 2009!

I keep forgetting to write a review for Shelter from the Storm but I'm finally getting around to it. My wife and I visited back in 2006/2007 over New Year's (in the Monkey House) and had the best time. We're avid hikers and their location to everything is fantastic-beaches, hiking trails...etc. But if you wanted to just relax and watch animals from the balcony, they're all there for you to enjoy. Monkeys (howler and capuchin), toucans, sloths, a myriad of birds, everything is right on the property. The accommodations are perfect, we went again this past New Years (2009/2010) and stayed at La Cuesta and it was fantastic again.
Daryl and Donna are gracious hosts, giving you enough space to enjoy your vacation while still supplying you with everything you need.
If you're looking for a real Costa Rica experience but with some serious luxury at a great price, this is your spot.
My wife and I are actually going back for our 3rd trip in april 2011 and we would choose no other place to stay than here, it's just too good. We're trying out Baja Las Rocas for the first time, so we will have stayed in all of the accommodations here now.

      Unexpected Piece of Paradise

Once in a while, we stumble across a place so friendly it feels like home - albeit a particularly stylish home with pool, private terraces, open-air living and dramatic jungle or ocean views. Shelter from the Storm is such a place.

After many years of vacationing at either the cliffs of Negril in Jamaica or the Beaches of the Yucatan we found an unexpected piece of paradise just south of a little surfing town (Dominical) on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.

Shelter from the Storm is a group of intimate villas where the mountains meet the sea. The boutique resort is set amongst a couple of acres of tropical lush gardens complete with swimming pool and rancho.

My wife and I stayed in La Cuesta, a Villa offering bedroom, living room & full kitchen plus a spectacularly large wrap-around outdoor patio/living area. Nestled just below tree top level but high above a jungle ravine we viewed a daily assortment of monkeys, tucans and other wildlife. No matter how hot the day La Cuesta stayed cool and protected in the shade.

The peacefullness and the beauty were only outdone by the graciousness of our two hosts, Donna & Daryl. Complete with the occaisional cocktail, directions to anywhere and suggestions for a wide variety of activities they could not have been more helpful.

      Loved Shelter from the Storm!

Left on 12/16/2010 for a stay in November 2010

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of spending a week in Villa La Cuesta at Shelter from the Storm. The property is located on a hillside overlooking the Pacific. I agree with other reviewers that a four wheel drive vehicle makes it easier to navigate the road up to the property, but it really wasn't a problem for us and I can't imagine not renting a four wheel drive in Costa Rica anyway. If anything, the Shelter from the Storm website doesn't convey just how nice both the Villa and remainder of the property are. The villa itself looked like something out of architectural Digest, both in design and in its' furnishings. La Cuesta is situated in a way to both provide a view of the Pacific and also the rain forest, complete with monkeys and toucans. The Rancho and pool were actually nicer than they appear in the website photos, with the at-cost cash bar much appreciated. Donna and Daryl were excellent hosts. It was obvious that they truly want each guest to have the best possible experience. The only issue we had at all during the week was a malfunctioning doorknob (welcome to the tropics), but this simply underscored how valuable it is to rent from owners who live on property. Daryl keeps spares of everything, so the problem was resolved in minutes.

      Paradise Is Not Lost

Left on 02/02/2010 for a stay in May 2008

Shelter From The Storm is not just a place to stay, it is an experience to be at one with nature in absolute luxurious accommodations. It is difficult to put into words the feeling of pure and absolute peace a traveler ( namely myself ) feels when reaching this destination.

I stayed in both the Baja Las Rocas and the Arriba La Rocas. Both places are beautifully decorated, supplied with great music (cds), which open out into the mountain side and the Pacific Ocean below. It was if I could just roll back the curtains (open up all the doors) connecting the Arriba La Rocas to the greatest story ever told - "Life". Everything is alive, and "air conditioning" need not apply! :o)

The mountain breezes and Pacific coastal waves spoke with volume of the animals (birds, monkeys, Sloths, etc. etc. etc.) that lived in the jungle surrounding SFTS.

The pool was being worked on, but it was hardly even noticeable with the warm and beautiful Pacific Ocean within walking distance and the jungle around full of undisturbed life. The Pool house was a very nice place to sit and read and...yes...watch the news, if you must.

I found myself exploring the southern pacific region (down to Panama) and down/over to the Osa Peninsula. They are both closer than I had originally thought. It was great to know I had SFTS to come back to in the evening on that day trip.

The Nauyaca Falls are very close, where one can horseback ride to the falls, swim out, climb up and jump OFF! :o) The Baru Natural Reserve which is minutes away, sends you back in time as a guest to the inhabitants (trees and animals) paradise.

The best part of Shelter from the Storm was Donna & Daryl, the owners. They are such kind and caring people, I felt like I knew them for most of my life. They made SFTS so warm and welcoming with their sweet and adorable pets Boomer, Ocho, MJ, Chancletta, Balboa, Cortez, and Isabelle.

It really felt like a home away from home. This is so much so, that going home seemed like the second bes

It doesn't get any better than this!

We stayed in Las Aribas Rocas for 2 weeks. The view, the tasteful decor, the beautiful gardens, the pool...we hardly wanted to leave. We awoke each morning early to often watch a band of capuchin monkeys, hear the Pacific surf below, watch the sunrise, sip coffee...etc. Daryl and Donna are wonderful hosts who have just the right sense of how much to offer help and how much to leave you alone. Their recommendations were always right on and very helpful. It was one of the most, if not the most, restful vacation we have ever had. In fact, we loved our stay so much that we have already booked our time for next January.

      The Best

Hands down best place to stay. I was skeptical of all of the five star reviews on tripadvisor until we stayed there--five stars are well earned on all accounts.

Best stay in the Dominical/Uvita area

Left on 11/15/2009 for a stay in June 2009

Shelter from the Storm offers everything you could ever want in a beautiful setting with spotless villas, views that are hard to tear yourself away from, great pool and the most accomadating owners - Daryl & Donna. It's hard not to constantly use superlatives to describe this place. The drive in is just a couple minutes off the main road, near km marker 151, up a rocky but well-kept road. I would definitely get a 4WD for the area, I used Solid and they provided great rates and service. I stayed in the Monkey House and Villa Las Rocas and would happily stay again in both, they are so well equipped I could live there easily! The welcome basket is such a nice, personal touch and I can't think of a single thing I could for want for that wasn't already provided for. The Monkey House enjoyed visits from the capuchins every morning around 5am and again around 5pm. My favourite activity at both places was just sitting on the deck enjoying the wonderful views, plus visiting with their cats and dogs. Never used the a/c, the breezes were constant and I even found myself a little cool at night. Very few bugs, even at night with the patio light on, bug spray really wasn't needed.

A book is provided with a wealth of info on nearby restaurants and beaches and activities. Do take a trip to the Chef's Table at Villas des las Aves to eat, best to get there before dark to make the leaving easier. La Mancha right up the road also had great food at very decent prices, while across the road La Parcela had great views but expensive drinks. Delicious in Dominical was a great place for breakfast and the Plaza Pacifica was nearby for the atm and groceries.

Rancho La Merced and Hacienda Baru are close by and have very nice hikes and a must-do is the tour to Nauyaca Falls. The main road is in great shape and I would suggest flying into Palmar Sur rather than Quepos if not driving in.

Thanks to Donna & Daryl for their warmth, helpfulness and the extra effort they put into everything. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the area, it really is that special. I do plan on returning!!

Fabulous villas with amazing ocean views

Left on 11/12/2009 for a stay in September 2007

My husband and I found a fantastic little hotel between Dominical and Uvita, Costa Rica. It's perched on the mountainside overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Ocean views? This is what all ocean views should be! The setting was gorgeous; lush jungle with tons of wildlife, flowers, a lovely pool area, and just 4 private villas. Our villa was wonderful with a fully equipped kitchenette, a beautiful tiled bath with a huge walk-in shower, and a huge veranda with a spectacular view of Coronado Bay and the Oso Penninsula. From our very private veranda we saw troops of monkeys, incredible birds, huge blue butterflies, even a sloth. We saw more wildlife at this hotel than we did in 3 weeks at National Parks!

The hotel was immaculate, the bed was extremely comfortable, the furnishings were nicer than my own. This is one beautiful place! Yet the price was very reasonable, similar to what we paid for normal hotels, much less than luxury hotels.

The hosts Daryl and Donna were great. They recommended several wonderful beaches and restaurants we wouldn't have found by ourselves. They also showed us the other villas, which were even more amazing than ours!

This is not your typical hotel! In fact, this may be the most remarkable, most relaxing place we've ever stayed. We definitely plan on staying here again.

I do recommend 4 wheel drive for getting to and from the hotel. It's not absolutely necessary, but 4 wheel drive is essential in Costa Rica if you want to do anything off the main highway.

Just what we were looking for for our Costa Rican vacation! Gorgeous property with abundant wildlife and views of the jungle and ocean. Had plenty of privacy and Daryl and Donna were so helpful in making our time well spent. We felt so comfortable and rested when we left. Best vacation ever... will return soon!
